  Hi........ • Pass errors in Django using HttpResponseRedirect

  I know that HttpResponseRedirect only takes one parameter, a URL. But there are cases when I want to redirect with an error message to display. I was reading this post: How to pass information using an http redirect (in Django) and there were a lot of good suggestions. I don't really want to use a library that I don't know how works. I don't want to rely on messages which, according to the Django docs, is going to be removed. I thought about using sessions. I also like the idea of passing it in a URL, something like: return HttpResponseRedirect('/someurl/?error=1') and then having some map from error code to message. Is it good practice to have a global map-like structure which hard codes in these error messages or is there a better way? Or should I just use a session EDIT: I got it working using a session. Is that a good practice to put things like this in the session?

• Buy or build tool for Data Reporting ?

  We have been asked to provide a data reporting solution. The followng are the requirements: i. The client has a lot of data which is generated everyday as an outcome of the tests they run. These tests are run at several sites and they get automatically backed up into a central server. ii. They already have perl scripts which post process them and generates excel based reports. iii. They need a web based interface for comparing those reports and they need to mark and track issues which might be present in those data. I am confused if we should build our own tool for this or we should go for already exiting tool(any suggestions?). Can you please provide supportive arguments for the decision that you would suggest?

• ASP.NET MVC 2 - Checkboxes

  I'm using string[] roles = Roles.GetAllRoles() to get a string[] of all the ASP.NET membership roles for my application. I'm sending the roles to my view in ViewData and using a foreach to create a set of Checkboxes using <%: Html.CheckBox("RoleCheckBox") %>. There are 3 roles and my view does render 3 checkboxes. When I do a View/Source, I see the checkboxes and their corresponding hidden tags. They all have the same, so there are 6 tags with the name "RoleCheckBox" - 3 that render the checkboxes and 3 that are hidden. The problem comes when I post the form back to my controller and bind the results - something like public ActionResult Create(Person person, string[] RoleCheckBox). I get FOUR strings and I have no idea where the fourth string ("false") is coming from. I could do some testing by trying various combinations of checks to see which one (hopefully) doesn't change and ignore it but that's just ugly. Does anyone know why this would be happening? Any advice?

• Approach for altering Primary Key from GUID to BigInt in SQL Server related tables

  I have two tables with 10-20 million rows that have GUID primary keys and at leat 12 tables related via foreign key. The base tables have 10-20 indexes each. We are moving from GUID to BigInt primary keys. I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions on an approach. Right now this is the approach I'm pondering: Drop all indexes and fkeys on all the tables involved. Add 'NewPrimaryKey' column to each table Make the key identity on the two base tables Script the data change "update table x, set NewPrimaryKey = y where OldPrimaryKey = z Rename the original primarykey to 'oldprimarykey' Rename the 'NewPrimaryKey' column 'PrimaryKey' Script back all the indexes and fkeys Does this seem like a good approach? Does anyone know of a tool or script that would help with this? TD: Edited per additional information. We're using auto-responders to deliver key information to people who complete a form asking for additional information. The goal is to reject forms that are submitted by competitors. • saving a records containing a member of type string to a file (Delphi, Windows)

  I have a record that looks similar to: type TNote = record Title : string; Note : string; Index : integer; end; Simple. The reason I chose to set the variables as string (as opposed to an array of chars) is that I have no idea how long those strings are going to be. They can be 1 char long, 200 or 2000. Of course when I try to save the record to a type file (file of...) the compiler complains that I have to give a size to string. Is there a way to overcome this? or a way to save those records to an untyped file and still maintain a sort of searchable way? Please do not point me to possible solutions, if you know the solution please post code. Thank you

• Online webcam chat. Free server and easy-to-implement client?

  I have a client requesting that his users can use their webcams to talk to each other. From what I've understood the main thing to use for this is Flash. However as I have not written flash I would like to have something really easy to implement. Of course preferrably free (or trial). The idea of this is that everything but the chat alone is in .net. So the users will not use flash until they are actaully going to talk to each other. So there is no use for rooms here. I've been looking into silverlight some as well. But it seems like silverlight does not offer streaming between users..? I know this question has been asked many times here. But I could not find a suitable answer which is why I post a new question.

• Android equivalent work-around for View.getX() before API 11?

  I'm using the getX() and getY() method on a view for some special dragging logic (not animation, i.e. I never use setX/Y methods, I just need the getters to check). However, I've come to realize that these are only available post-API 11. The docs for getX() say that is it the addition of the 'left' property and the 'translationX' property. All well and good, except get/setTranslationX() is only around since API 11 as well. I was wondering if there was any knowledge on what this method returns behind the scenes, so I could maybe put in a workaround. Thanks for any help - Chase

• Consuming WCF REST service in multiple ways (.Net, plain XML)

  I have become quite frustrated of WCF as I just want to use this simple scenario: Provide a webservice using REST, with a UriTemplate like /method/{param1}/{param2}/ and a 3th parameter that is sent to the service as XML as POST data. Use just plain XML, no SOAP overhead. Be able to generate a proxy in Visual Studio so a .Net using client can easily use the service (don't care about SOAP overhead here). I can create 1. and 2. but no way I can use 3. I tried adding both webHttpBinding and basicHttpBinding endpoints in my services config; I fooled around with the <services/> tag, but I just can't get this working. What am I missing here?! N.B. I checked out this article: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/186631/rest-soap-endpoints-for-a-wcf-service but nothing what is described there seems to work here?!

• How can I maximally partition a set?

  I'm trying to solve one of the Project Euler problems. As a consequence, I need an algorithm that will help me find all possible partitions of a set, in any order. For instance, given the set 2 3 3 5: 2 | 3 3 5 2 | 3 | 3 5 2 | 3 3 | 5 2 | 3 | 3 | 5 2 5 | 3 3 and so on. Pretty much every possible combination of the members of the set. I've searched the net of course, but haven't found much that's directly useful to me, since I speak programmer-ese not advanced-math-ese. Can anyone help me out with this? I can read pretty much any programming language, from BASIC to Haskell, so post in whatever language you wish.

• Ruby mailer is coming up with an EOFError

  Well i did a wordpress installation with the newer version now avaialble at dere website.. i did my installation at a subdomain : foo.abc.com the problem came with the permalink which do not work dere bec of the htaccess file. Can any one suggest me how to do that, i need to have only the category/postname Till now i am able to do foo.abc.com/index.php/category/postname - i dont want index.php in it. • Adding custom tags in Wordpress

  Hello, I'm creating a new WP theme and I would like to allow the user to insert a divider in between paragraphs or images he/she is entering, for a post/page. I want the output to be something like: <div class="divider"></div> But I don't want the user to have to enter HTML in the WYSIWYG editor. Is it possible to ask them to enter something like: <-- break --> and then translate that to the div markup on display? Thanks.

  I've got my database set up with three tables - code, tags, and code_tags for tagging posts. This will be the SQL query processed when a post is submitted. Each tag is sliced up by PHP and individually inserted using these queries. INSERT IGNORE INTO tags (tag) VALUES ('$tags[1]'); SELECT tags.id FROM tags WHERE tag = '$tags[1]' ORDER BY id DESC LIMIT 1; INSERT INTO code_tags (code_id, tag_id) VALUES ($codeid, WHAT_GOES_HERE?) The WHAT_GOES_HERE? value at the end is what I need to know. It needs to be the ID of the tag that the second query fetched. How can I put that ID into the third query? I hope I explained that correctly. I'll rephrase if necessary.

• Why do C++ streams use char instead of unsigned char?

  I've always wondered why the C++ Standard library has instantiated basic_[io]stream and all its variants using the char type instead of the unsigned char type. char means (depending on whether it is signed or not) you can have overflow and underflow for operations like get(), which will lead to implementation-defined value of the variables involved. Another example is when you want to output a byte, unformatted, to an ostream using its put function. Any ideas? Note: I'm still not really convinced. So if you know the definitive answer, you can still post it indeed.

• Is C# WebAPI worth it? Can I use standart MVC4 to create my API?

  I need to build a massive API and I'm trying out WebAPI instead of default MVC4 projects and it seems that it just makes things more difficult. Can have only 4 methods in controller Get, Post, Put, Delete, if I want more I need to modify route for that particular method FluentValidation won't work with WebAPI so I need to use DataAnnotations which I really don't want to. Can't use dynamic return data-types My question is: Would it really be that bad if I would use MVC4 project and use default ActionResults that return Json? What are real advantages of using WebAPI, why did they even made them in the first place if you can easily convert your project to API?

  As you know, in Eclipse you can turn on "Unnecessary 'else' statement" check that will trigger on if-then-else with premature return. And, from my experience, there are two most possible situations when use such statement: 1) Pre-check: if (validate(arg1)) { return false; } doLotOfStuff(); 2) Post-check: doLotOfStuff(); if (condition) { return foo; } else { return bar; } In the second case, if the trigger is on, Eclipse will suggest you to change the code to: doLotOfStuff(); if (condition) { return foo; } return bar; However, I think that the return with else statement is more readable as it is like direct mapping of business logic. So I am curios if this "Unnecessary 'else' statement" code convention is widespread or else statement is more preferable?
