• Windows Server 2003 stops sharing a folder when the server reboots [closed]

  I have a file server that will stop sharing a particular folder once the server is rebooted. This problem happened after the server went through a p2v migration. There are no events that seem to correlate to this issue. I was reading http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/870964 but I don't think this applies and there are other shares on the same drive that are still there after a reboot. To be clear about the issue; When the server reboots share x is no longer shared any more but share y and z are still there. This has nothing to do with users not being able to see the share. On the server its self the folder that was shared is no longer shared. I wish I had more information to post but after hours on this issue I can't find a way to move forward.

• Using .htaccess, can you hide the true URL?

  So I have a web hotel with 1 main website http://www.myrootsite.com/ and a few websites in subdirectories, in a folder called projects. I have domain names pointing to the subdirectories, but when holding the mouse over a link in those websites the URLs are shown as: http://www.myrootsite.com/projects/mysubsite/contact.html When I'm on mysubsite.com I want them to be shown as: http://www.mysubsite.com/contact.html I spoke to support for the web hotel and the guy said try using .htaccess, but I'm not sure exactly how to do this. Thank you very much for your time! Edit: For more information My website is: http://www.example1.com/ and I also own http://www.example2.com/. All of example2.com's files are in: example1.com/projects/example2/. When you visit example2.com, you'll notice all of the URL's point towards: example1.com/projects/example2/ but I want them to point towards: example2.com/ Can this be done? I hope this is enough info for you to go on :). Edit: For w3d I go to the url mysubsite.com and the browser shows the url mysubsite.com. The services I'm using create an iframe around myrootsite.com and use the url mysubsite.com I just hate that in Firefox and Internet Explorer, holding the mouse over link show that the destination url is: myrootsite.com/projects/mysubsite/...

• How to Use Vim-Style Keyboard Shortcuts for OS X Tab Navigation

  After switching to OS X when I got a new MacBook Air, one of the first things I needed to duplicate was my extremely customized AutoHotkey setup — the most important of which is using the J and K keys to navigate throughout tabbed windows easily. Yeah, I’m a Vim user. I’ve never been a fan of having to use CTRL + TAB to switch from one tab to the next — to start with, you have to move your hands from the home row, and it’s awkward, and why should I have to do that just because somebody decided that keyboard shortcut before tabs became popular? If you think about it, if tabbed browsers were popular back when keyboard shortcuts were being invented, they would have definitely reserved some of the good shortcuts for switching tabs. On Windows, I’ve always used an AutoHotkey script to make things the way I wanted it:  ALT + J and ALT + K for selecting previous and next tabs. Once you get used to it, it’s extremely awesome, and so much faster than using CTRL + TAB. Of course, I also hacked CTRL + T and CTRL + W into ALT + T and ALT + W so I could open new tabs and close them without moving my hands from the home row. Over on OS X, it turns out that it’s incredibly simple and easy to use CMD + J and CMD + K for next/previous tab navigation, and it works in most applications that support tabs, like Terminal, Safari, or Google Chrome.

• How to script printer creation on a Windows Server 2008 R2 clustered print server?

  As per subject. I've found some ways of scripting printer creation on Windows print servers using WMI, but it looks like WMI doesn't support clustered print servers (or clustered servers at all). The scripts in C:\Windows\System32\Printing_Admin_Scripts are useless because, they are not cluster-aware and end up creating the printers on the active cluster node (just like using WMI). The only tool I found that was able to work on a clustered print server is printui.exe (shortcut for rundll32 printui.dll, PrintUIEntry), but it can't create TCP printing ports: it can only add printers if the port already exists. How can I completely script printer creation (including TCP printing ports!) on a clustered Windows Server 2008 R2 print server?

• 7.0.1 and Photoshop openGL requirements

  Hi, I'm running Workstation 7.0.1 on a 64-bit Linux host, with a Vista guest, and the Aero theme works a treat - full marks for getting that working! However, when running Photoshop there are some operations (like interactive image rotation) that seem to require graphics support that VMWare doesn't have - attempting to do these operations returns an error that the functionality "only works with OpenGL enabled windows". It seems that it needs OpenGL 2.0 and Shader Model 3.0 which I gather are supported under Workstation 7 - do I need to put in additional settings of some kind? I've updated to the right version of VMWare Tools, and the video driver is listed as "VMWare SVGA 3D (Microsoft Corporation - WDDM)". I see that in 6.5 there was an option to switch between the beta WDDM driver and the SVGAII driver, but I assume the features of both of these would have been merged into the standard driver in 7.0? • Problem installing a w2k DC on Hyper-V?

  Hi, We have a cluster with four node windows 2008 r2 and hyper-v installed. We would like to install 2 VM with role domain controller w2k (the domain is different from the domain of the hyper-v cluster). Do you know if there are any restriction on doing it? Some collegues say that we risk data corruption if we do live migrations. Others speak about the fact that Microsoft don't support w2k any more. And others have doubts because the global catalog server installed on these DC could have loss of performance. Any idea? Thanks Tony

  I've created a simple web application, a self-contained tool with a user system. I host it publicly for everyone to use, but I've gotten some requests to allow companies to host the entire application privately on their internal systems. I have no idea what I'm doing - I have no experience with deployment or server stuff. I'm just some person who learned enough JS and PHP to make a tool for my own needs. The application runs with Apache, MySQL, and PHP. What's the best way to package my application to let others run it privately? I'm assuming there's better options than just sending them all the source code. I'd like to find a solution that is: Does not require support to set up (I'm just a single developer without much free time) Easy to configure Easy to update Does there exist some one-size-fits all thing that I can give to someone, they can install it, and bam, now when they go to http://myapplication/ on their intranet, it works? • Making document storage in Sharepoint a breeze (leave the Web UI behind)

  Hey everyone, I know many of us regularly use Sharepoint for document storage in order to make documents available to several people, have it version controlled, etc.  Doing this through the Web UI can be a real headache, especially when you have multiple documents you want to modify or upload, or when IE isn’t your default browser.  Luckily we can access the Sharepoint library like a regular network drive if we like. Open Sharepoint in Internet Explorer (other browsers don’t support the Open with Explorer functionality), navigate to wherever your documents are stored, choose the Library tab, and then click Open with Explorer. This will open the document storage in Explorer and you can interact with the documents just like they were on any other network drive J  This makes uploading large numbers of documents or directory structures super easy (a simple copy-paste), and modifying your files nice and easy. As an added bonus, you can drag and drop that location from the address bar in Explorer to the Favorites menu so that it’s always easily accessible and you can leave the Sharepoint Web UI behind completely for modifying your documents.  Just click on the new favorite to go straight to your documents.   You can even map this folder location as a network drive if you want to have it show up as another drive (e.g N: drive). • How to use chain.p7b with Apache?

  I wanted to setup a SSL website on Apache and applied for a certificate from my local ISP. All they sent me was a single file named chain.p7b. I have always used certificates from other vendors without any issues but they usually provide two files to be configured as SSLCertificateFile and SSLCertificateChainFile in Apache. Following instructions from several online resources, I opened the p7b file in Windows and extracted 4 certificates from the file. I then tried configuring Apache with one of the files and it worked, but shows a warning: The certificate is not trusted because no issuer chain was provided. I though I have to use remaining 3 files as SSLCertificateChainFile and/or SSLCACertificateFile. I tried that but it didn't work so I am assuming it might be something completely different. Anyone faced this issue before? The following page http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21458997 talks about using a keystore but is that relevant to Apache?

• Robust way to keep records of software releases?

  We release a number of small plug-ins that go along with our software. Each plug-in allows our software to talk to a single manufactuer's hardware. I would like to devise a system for keeping track of plug-in releases. Example info that should be stored: Hardware manufacturer name 32-bit? 64-bit? both? What modes of operation does the hardware support? What versions of the manufacturer's driver have been tested with the plugin? Desirable properties of the system: Able to synchronize with version control software Stores data in human-readable text file (also good for differ tool) Free visual, spreadsheet-like editor available Able to do simple analysis like "What is the oldest plug-in?" I've got to imagine that someone else has tackled this problem already. Right now my best guess is XML/JSON with a visual editor, but I have been disappointed in the editors I've tried so far. I'd like to get input from some more experienced developers. Thanks!

• Does OEM license of x86 Windows 7 extend to the x64 version?

  I bought a laptop that came preinstalled with 2GB of RAM and Windows 7 Professional x86. I upgraded to 8GB RAM, and naturally want to install the x64 version of Windows. The laptop came without media, with the option to create a bootable restore disc, which is, of course Win7 x86. Question 1: does my Win7 license cover both x86 and x64 versions? Question 2: is there a legitimate way to acquire x64 install media (e.g. from Microsoft) for a nominal fee? (believe it or not, the laptop manufacturer support had the gall to suggest that I should have bought a differently configured machine in the first place) Thank you!

  I have mostly worked on hardware testing in my professional career and would like to get onto the software development side. I thought working on a practically usable project will help motivate me and help acquire some skills. I have decided to build a test plan management tool for the QA team I work in (We use excel sheets!). The test plan management tool should be browser based and should support this: There would be many test plans, each test plan having test sets, test sets having test cases and test cases having instructions, attachments and Pass/fail status marking and bug info in case of failure. It should also have an export to excel option. I have a visual picture of the tool I am looking to build but I don't have enough experience to figure our where to start. My current programming skills are limited to C and shell programming and I want to pick up python. What tools (programming language, database and anything else?) would you recommend for me to get this done? Also what are the key concepts in the recommended programming language that I should focus on to build a browser based tool like this?

• Is it possible to do a web search filtered for the user's comprehension level? [migrated]

  Do any of the major search engines support a filter to indicate the comprehension level of the user and thus to filter out content beyond their scope? So for example, if someone wanted to find results on "astronomy", but to only show content appropriate for someone in junior-high or lower. Alternatively, if there isn't such an existing method directly, any ideas on how this might be accomplished with existing tools? I found this paper, which seems to indicate folks have looked at this, just don't know if there is a real world tool to do this.

• Remove DRM From a WMV file I own

  Alright, first, let me explain. I purchased some content through Microsoft's Zune/Xbox Video service, and man that was a mistake. After trying several times to get the video to play, I received an error along the lines of "out of licenses." Lucky for me, I was able to recover the file I was looking for off of a backup, but now I'm having problems playing it. It works fine in Windows Media Player, but not in Zune or Xbox Video (on Windows 8). I contacted Zune's customer support, and of course they couldn't help me. So, I legally own the content, I just want to be able to play it where I want to play it. It's ridiculous that I can't. I know there are ways to do this out there, I just can't figure it out (I keep getting directed to this piece of junk thing called Almedia, which kind of seems to work, but was only putting out audio in the demo version). • Browser Statistics for Geekswithblogs.net

  I love Google Analytics!  It helps me so much during my day-to-day maintenance of Geekswithblogs.net and our other sites.  I can see so much data about our visitors and come up with new ways of delivering more content to our readers so they can really get the most out of our community.  Browsers and Browser Versions is a big indicator for me to help decide what we can support and what we need to be testing with.  The clear browsers of choice right now are Chrome, IE, and Firefox taking up 94.1%.  The next browser is Safari at 2.71%.  What this really brings to my attention besides I better test well with Chrome, Firefox, and IE is that we are definitely missing an opportunity with Mobile devices.  We really need to kick up the heat when it comes to a mobile presence with Geekswithblogs.net as a community and the blogs that are on this site.  We need easy discovery of new content and easy tracking of what I like.  I am definitely on mission to make this happen and it will be a phased approach, but I want to see these numbers changes since most of us have 2 or 3 mobile devices we use for Social activities, but tools are lacking for interacting with technical data besides RSS readers. • How to verify the code that could take a substantial time to compile? [on hold]

  As a follow up to my prev question: What is the best aproach for coding in a slow compilation environment To recap: I am stuck with a large software system with which a TDD ideology of "test often" does not work. And to make it even worse the features like pre-compiled headers/multi-threaded compilation/incremental linking, etc is not available to me - hence I think that the best way out would be to add the extensive logging into the system and to start "coding in large chunks", which I understand as code for a two-three hours first (as opposed to 15-20 mins in TDD) - thoroughly eyeball the code for a 15 minutes and only after all that do the compilation and run the tests. As I have been doing TDD for a quite a while, my code eyeballing / code verification skills got rusty (you don't really need this that much if you can quickly verify what you've done in 5 seconds by running a test or two) - so I am after a recommendations on how to learn these source code verification/error spotting skills again. I know I was able to do that easily some 5-10 years ago when I din't have much support from the compiler/unit testing tools I had until recently, thus there should be a way to get back to the basics.

• Are small amounts of functional programming understandable by non-FP people?

  Case: I'm working at a company, writing an application in Python that is handling a lot of data in arrays. I'm the only developer of this program at the moment, but it will probably be used/modified/extended in the future (1-3 years) by some other programmer, at this moment unknown to me. I will probably not be there directly to help then, but maybe give some support via email if I have time for it. So, as a developer who has learned functional programming (Haskell), I tend to solve, for example, filtering like this: filtered = filter(lambda item: included(item.time, dur), measures) The rest of the code is OO, it's just some small cases where I want to solve it like this, because it is much simpler and more beautiful according to me. Question: Is it OK today to write code like this? How does a developer that hasn't written/learned FP react to code like this? Is it readable? Modifiable? Should I write documentation like explaining to a child what the line does? # Filter out the items from measures for which included(item.time, dur) != True I have asked my boss, and he just says "FP is black magic, but if it works and is the most efficient solution, then it's OK to use it." What is your opinion on this? As a non-FP programmer, how do you react to the code? Is the code "googable" so you can understand what it does? I would love feedback on this :) Edit: I marked phant0m's post as answer, because he gives good advice on how to write the code in a more readable way, and still keep the advantages. But I would also like to recommend superM's post because of his viewpoint as a non-FP programmer.

• SSD on Vmware ESXI 4 (TRIM? Good Idea?)

  Hi, I just posted about finding bottle necks and have narrowed it down to having way too many VMs on my machine on one 15K SAS drive. I have plenty of cores and plenty of ram. So I am planning on putting 6 VMs on one drive (so 5 drives for 30 VMs). I am thinking of using a 60GB Vertex 2 SSD. Each of my VMs will only need about 6GB of HDD space so this isn't a big deal. My questions are: does ESXI support Trim and do I really need it if I leave 25% of the drive as free space? If I need it should I get a diff drive that handles garbage collection differently? I have a RAID controller w/ write caching. I will still benefit from this? Will this effect my setup differently? Is there anything I need to consider regarding SSD's in virtualized environments. • Extremely poor WiFi reception on new desktop

  I just received a new desktop with a built-in WiFi card (Windows 7 Home Premium x64). However, I am only able to receive any WiFi signal when the computer is within 1-2 meters of a router. Even then, the signal is very weak (Windows 7 says it is "poor"). I have tried this with 2 different routers and see similar results. I have somewhere around a dozen other devices that can connect to both routers with greater signal strength (usually full strength) from much, much further away. When I tried calling support I was instructed to reinstall my drivers and attempt to change the WiFi channel of the router. Neither worked. I was then told that the problem was with my routers and that the computer was functioning normally and that it was certainly not a hardware problem. What would be the cause of this and is there anything I can do to fix it?
