• Matching users based on a series of questions

  I'm trying to figure out a way to match users based on specific personality traits. Each trait will have its own category. I figure in my user table I'll add a column for each category: id name cat1 cat2 cat3 1 Sean ? ? ? 2 Other ? ? ? Let's say I ask each user 3 questions in each category. For each question, you can answer one of the following: No, Maybe, Yes How would I calculate one number based off the answers in those 3 questions that would hold a value I can compare other users to? I was thinking having some sort of weight. Like: No -> 0 Maybe -> 1 Yes -> 2 Then doing some sort of meaningful calculation. I want to end up with something like this so I can query the users and find who matches close: id name cat1 cat2 cat3 1 Sean 4 5 1 2 Other 1 2 5 In the situation above, the users don't really match. I'd want to match with someone with a +1 or -1 of my score in each category. I'm not a math guy so I'm just looking for some ideas to get me started.

  I'm relatively new to solr. I have a production site running on a VPS, but now I'm having serious load issues. I don't know where to start in order to get the load down... VPS specs (linode.com 512) 512 MB RAM 4 CPU (1x priority) Looks like my solr server (tomcat) is using a lot of CPU power You can find my solrconfig.xml on http://pastebin.com/qdfi8Med and my schema.xml on http://pastebin.com/rRusDP8b I've tried to increaese the cache size, but this didn't do anything on the load. • Advised auditing method for MS SQL to track changes made to a specific table by a specific user?

  What is the best method for tracking changes or logging the queries done to a table by a specific user when the person is using Management Studio? I'm using 2008 R2 Express Edition and want to specifically track a single user who logs in through Management studio and runs queries to make changes manually. I want to see what query was run and thus determine what was changed and how. I am not interested in restoring the information. I considered Change Tracking but read that it is not ideal for auditing as well I am unsure how to read the data, then I considered the Bulk-Logging option on the database however I then have to consider handling the log files which may grow huge as the database is used constantly by a web app. I am wondering if there is a more concise method to do what I want?

• Google Analytics API data for goals (funnels) doesn't match - how do they reconcile?

  I have a Google Analytics account with a well-functioning funnel made up of 4 goals. I can query the API and get the data out, but it does not match the funnel report in Analytics. Without getting into specific values, I can give you an example with faked data. Here's how the funnel might look: Shopping Cart 100 > 100 > 20 80 (80%) Address Page 5 > 85 > 25 60 (71%) Payment Page 2 > 62 > 10 52 (84%) Checkout 1 > 53 (49.07% funnel conversion rate) Okay, so you would expect the API to output data something like this: goal1Starts goal1Completions goal1Abandons 100 80 20 goal2Starts goal2Completions goal2Abandons 85 60 25 goal3Starts goal3Completions goal3Abandons 62 52 10 goal4Starts goal4Completions goal4Abandons 53 53 0 Instead, it's different. Firstly, the abandons are associated with the following goal (so goal1 always has 0 abandons and goal4 always has 0 abandons. Okay, I can work with that. What's confusing is that the numbers are always a little different. The goal1Completions always match the report, as do the goal4Completions, but everything else is off by a small amount. Sometimes it's only 2 visits, other times it's off by 50. For the report above here's the kind of results I would tend to get: goal1Starts goal1Completions goal1Abandons 100 100 0 goal2Starts goal2Completions goal2Abandons 105 84 21 goal3Starts goal3Completions goal3Abandons 90 65 25 goal4Starts goal4Completions goal4Abandons 58 53 5 Here's what I know: Goal(n)Completions + Goal(n)Abandons = Goal(n)Starts Goal(n)Starts = Goal(n-1)Completions Goal(n)Starts - Goal(n-1)Completions != reported number entering at that level That third one is particularly disappointing. So, here's my question: What data do I need to pull from the API in order to recreate the counts in the Funnel report in Google Analytics? I know lower_case_table_names is only for "TABLE" names but how about triggers other database objects . Will they remain case-insensitive How about views ? D) Do I need to rename all tables before/after this configuration setting or this will do the miracle in one step (i.e lower_case_table_names=1 neutralize table names) ? It’s easy to list installed packages, but it does not include the name of the repository (such as “main” or “universe”). And this information isn’t in /var/lib/dpkg/status, so dpkg-query doesn’t show it either. I want to get a list of “unsupported” software—that is, software that doesn’t come from the “main” repository, and for which Ubuntu does not guarantee security updates. Note: This is a server. • How and what should I be (unit) testing for in this method?

  I am relatively new to unit testing and have a query about what/how I should be testing a certain method. For the following (psudo-c#) method I have created (not a real-life example) what would you test for? Initially, my thoughts would be to test the output with variations on the dictionary of form fields, e.g. valid, invalid, missing values. However I also wonder how you would test to make sure the object values have been changed to the correct value and that the correct email message was attempted to be sent (obviously both services could/would be mocked). • If an entity is composed, is it still a god object?

  I am working on a system to configure hardware. Unfortunately, there is tons of variety in the hardware, which means there's a wide variety of capabilities and configurations depending on what specific hardware the software connects to. To deal with this, we're using a Component Based Entity design where the "hardware" class itself is a very thin container for components that are composed at runtime based on what capabilities/configuration are available. This works great, and the design itself has worked well elsewhere (particularly in games). The problem is that all this software does is configure the hardware. As such, almost all of the code is a component of the hardware instance. While the consumer only ever works against the strongly typed interfaces for the components, it could be argued that the class that represents an instance of the hardware is a God Object. If you want to do anything to/with the hardware, you query an interface and work with it. So, even if the components of an object are modular and decoupled well, is their container a God Object and the downsides associated with the anti-pattern?

• Too Much Swapping, even though RAM is 2/3 Empty

  I have a VPS with 9GB RAM, 300GB HDD, 3 GB Swap, 7 Cores. The OS is CentOS 5.7 Final. I have postgres9.0 running on my machine, with proper tuning done (at least by book/wiki of PostgreSQL). What happens is most of the times when some complex query run (by complex I mean select with maximum 3 Joins), eventhough 66% of my RAM is unused there is ~99% swapping is happening. Plus it screws up my disk IO which is most of the time reaching ~100% and slows down everything else. (I tend to believe something's wrong with my disk.) I dont understand the reason of this much of swapping happening. Is it because of context switching?? Most of the time my processors are idle, while the IO wait goes upto 30% during pick times. Would appreciate if some can shed some light on it. Thanks.

  Apache 2 by default logs the entire request URI including query string of every request. What is a straight forward way to prevent an Apache 2 web server from logging sensitive data, for example passwords, credit card numbers, etc., but still log the rest of the request? I would like to log all log-in attempts including the attempted username as Apache does by default, and prevent Apache from logging the password directly. I have looked through the Apache 2 documentation and there doesn't appear to be an easy way to do this other than completely preventing logging of these requests (using SetEnvIf). How can I accomplish this?

  First of all, my ubiquitous language is PHP, and I'm thinking about learning Java. So let me split my question on two closely related parts. Here goes the first part. Say I have a domain-model class. It has some getters, setters, some query methods etc. And one day I want to have a possibility to compare them. So it looks like: class MyEntity extends AbstractEntity { public function getId() { // get id property } public function setId($id) { // set id property } // plenty of other methods that set or retrieve data public function compareTo(MyEntity $anotherEntity) { // some compare logic } } If it would have been Java, I should have implemented a Comparable interface. But why? Polymorphism? Readbility? Or something else? And if it was PHP -- should I create Comparable interface for myself? So here goes the second part. My colleague told me that it is a rule of thumb in Java to create an interface for every behavioral aspect of the class. For example, if I wanted to present this object as a string, I should state this behaviour by something like implements Stringable, where in case of PHP Stringable would look like: interface Stringable { public function __toString(); } Is that really a rule of thumb? What benefits are gained with this approach? And does it worth it in PHP? And in Java?

• Speed up connection to MySQL

  So here's one for you. Any idea on a way to shorten the time it takes to connect to a MySQL database? The reason I'm wondering is because I find that just connecting to the DB adds just over a second to the rendering of the page and that seems a bit long considering Apache and MySQL is running on the same machine and the mysqli_connect is connecting to localhost. It's just such a shame when the connection takes a second while any query I end up doing won't add any significant amount of time to the render/load time. Any ways to shorten the time it takes to open a connection?

• How to configure permissions for win2008 task running as Network Service to stop/start a service on different system?

  Well... title says it all, actually. We've got a Scheduled Task set up on a windows server 2003 box running as the Network Service, and the batch file it runs will invoke "sc" to stop and then start a service on another windows box, however sc reports: [SC] OpenService FAILED 5: Access is denied. Running the same batch file via the windows explorer has no issues, and my user account is part of the Administrators group so I believe this is why there are no issues when I try it manually. Is this a permissions thing I enable for Network Service on the first server? Or do I enable permissions for Network Service somehow on the target server? This question (http://serverfault.com/questions/19382/why-sc-query-fails-from-one-machine-but-works-from-another) touches on something similar, but I'm looking for enabling the Network Service to access the service via the scheduled task.

  In Access, I used a query to sum some numbers and appended the answer to another table(table2). Now I need to export the number as a text with 5 positions but can't seem to get it to hard code all 5 positions. I have it formatted as text, field length 5, custom foramt "00000" (also tried @@@@@). Example: 3 + 3 + 1 = 7. THen append the 7 to table2. It always shows as 7. I need it to shows as 00007.

  Let me first start off by saying I am not an experienced linux user. I am trying to debug a mysql script in linux, however, my issue is that most of the queries are successful so I can not see the error messages because they scroll off the screen. I am executing the queries from a large file using the \. command. I was wondering if there was a way to show ONLY the error messages when I exececute the sql file. Right now it is showing both error messages and Query OK,.... I don't really care about the queries that are ok, just the errors. Thanks!

• Accessing Oracle DB through SQL Server using OPENROWSET

  I'm trying to access a large Oracle database through SQL Server using OPENROWSET in client-side Javascript, and not having much luck. Here are the particulars: A SQL Server view that accesses the Oracle database using OPENROWSET works perfectly, so I know I have valid connection string parameters. However, the new requirement is for extremely dynamic Oracle queries that depend on client-side selections, and I haven't been able to get dynamic (or even parameterized) Oracle queries to work from SQL Server views or stored procedures. Client-side access to the SQL Server database works perfectly with dynamic and parameterized queries. I cannot count on clients having any Oracle client software. Therefore, access to the Oracle database has to be through the SQL Server database, using views, stored procedures, or dynamic queries using OPENROWSET. Because the SQL Server database is on a shared server, I'm not allowed to use globally-linked databases. My idea was to define a function that would take my own version of a parameterized Oracle query, make the parameter substitutions, wrap the query in an OPENROWSET, and execute it in SQL Server, returning the resulting recordset. You must access this provider through a linked server. which makes no sense to me. The Microsoft explanation for this error relates to a registry setting (DisallowAdhocAccess). This is set correctly on my PC, but surely this relates to the DB server and not the client PC, and I would expect that the setting there is correct since the view mentioned above works. One alternative that I've tried is to eliminate the enclosing EXEC in the Open statement: rs.Open(e,db); but this generates the same error. I also tried putting the OPENROWSET in a stored procedure. This works perfectly when executed from within SQL Server Management Studio, but fails with the same error message when the stored procedure is called from Javascript. Is what I'm trying to do possible? If so, can you recommend how to fix my code? Or is a completely different approach necessary? Any hints or related information will be welcome. Thanks in advance.

I have a button on the nav bar which begins an image import process by opening an action sheet. Once the method for the action sheet starts, my string is invalid - but only if it contains encoded characters. If it is just a "normal" string, everything is fine and acts as expected. Am I off on my encoding? At first I thought it might be a memory problem but I can't figure out why that would affect only encoded strings. By using breakpoints I was able to see that the encodedSourceFolder is invalid in the action sheet method.

• Get information about AutocompleteTextView from resulting AutoCompleteTextView$DropDownListView

  I'm using 3 AutocompleteTextViews to suggest entries from a database. I subclassed AutocompleteTextView to handle setting the default text to null when clicked and setting back to the default instructions if moved away and nothing is entered. I was using a SimpleCursorAdapter to bind to the view, but I discovered that there was no way I could get the id of the AutocompleteTextView from an OnItemClickListener, which I needed to put additional information from the selected row in a variable depending on which AutocompleteTextView it was from. All I could access was the AutoCompleteTextView$DropDownListView, which is an undocumented inner class that appears to offer no real functionality. Neither was there a way to go up the view hierarchy to get the original AutocompleteTextView. So I subclassed SimpleCursorAdapter and added an int to the constructor to identify which AutocompleteTextView the adapter was from, and I was able to access this from the view passed into OnItemClick(). So, although my solution works fine, I wonder if it is possible to get the id of an AutocompleteTextView from its DropDownListView? I am also using another database query which gets the id from the OnItemClick and then looks up the data for that item, because I couldn't find a way of converting more than one column to a string. Should I be using CursorAdapter for this, to save initiating another query? Oh, and another thing, do I need a database cursor initially (all_cursor) when all I'm doing is filtering on it to get a new cursor? Seems like overkill.
