  • Can you boot an Acer Aspire One from an SD card when no BIOS is available?

    Is it possible to boot the Acer Aspire One PC from an SD card? I have bricked an Aspire One, but it does not even start the BIOS. Aspire One have this issue and a BIOS update usually work and it helped me once in the past, but this time it's all over, and the BIOS update fails. It still reads the SD card with the magic Ctrl + Esc shortcut used to launch the BIOS update. Can I trick the computer into booting somehow using this shortcut?

  • Is it better to have multiple domains for cities or one single TLD?

    I make websites for small businesses, and for some reason business owners love to have several domains with the same website but the TLD containing the city name. For example: 1. smallbizname.com 2. clevelandsmallbizname.com 3. columbussmallbizname.com 4. cincinnatismallbizname.com ... and so on. I've seen questions about localization per country aspects, but this is a much smaller scale, so I don't think the same rules apply. The problem I have is the companies never want to write separate content per domain, just have the same website hosted several times at each domain. I feel this probably hurts SEO for two reasons: 1. Traffic gets scattered throughout domains, could be boosting just one domain. 2. Duplicate content penalty because the content is identical. My question boils down to this... Should I redirect all the city domains to the main business name domain, or does having these separate sites help to rank better per city? And if they are redirected, how does google rank the redirects? Thanks for any input on this issue!!

  • What's the difference between one-dash and two-dashes for command prompt parameters?

    I was wondering why is it that some programs requires their command prompt parameters to have two dashes in front whereas some (most) only require one dash in front? For example most programs look like this: relaxer -dtd toc.xml toc_gr.xml toc_jp.xml Whereas some programs look like this: xmllint --valid toc.xml --noout What's the reason that some requires two dashes instead of one? Doesn't it make sense for everyone to stick to one standard (i.e. a single dash will do).

  • When working with contractors/interns how protective should one be of your codebase?

    We're considering hiring a contractor or intern to work with us on our iOS project but this causes me to get really paranoid that we're giving somebody who doesn't work for the company access to our precious codebase. I mean, I could just give them access to the classes I'd like them to work on but that seems rude and it would make it more difficult for them to develop what we need them to. How paranoid should one be about people running off with their entire application?

  • Which PSU should one chose? The biggest is the best?

    I'm fully aware of PSU's "Active PFC" and that they won't consume the written W all the time. (Makes sense). But now I'm before a PSU replacement (Guys: NEVER buy a Chieftec. Seriously.) The question is: If one can get a bigger one (in my case 750W and 650W) ... should that person go for the bigger one ? (The difference in price is not much). No, I don't think I'll soon use all that much. (Please help (if you want of course) to make the question more generic if the question is really not OK in this form. I've been wondering about this for a time already. In my case it would be XFX Black Edition Silver 750W and 650W) (Basically about "which one" I would go with XFX/Antec/something which comes with industry qualified parts. Like Duracell but in a PSU. :) But the performance is a different thing.)

    I have setuped an Exim4 server on my debian wheezy server. This mail server only sends mail coming from localhost. The purpose is sending mail for my website. I have cron tasks and other services generating mails for root user. These mails are not stored in /var/mail as before, but sent by exim to [email protected]. I try to make exim send mails for root to [email protected] rather than [email protected]. I tried adding a .forward in /root with [email protected] as content. I tried also changing /etc/aliases with root: [email protected].   • Why is only one domU giving me the "time went backwards"?

    I'm setting up a replacement server for one that was working ok but is having hardware issues. The original server is i686 (Pentium III), but the new one is amd64 (Xeon). Everything is working fine, except one of the three domUs is giving me the "clocksource/0: Time went backwards" error. The Debian Wiki says what to do if all your domUs are getting this error, but not what to do if only one of them has. The "tenants" on my domUs have done some messing about with the systems I configured for them. I don't know what the user of that particular domU might have done.

  • How to view files backed up to Ubuntu One by Déjà Dup?

    I decided to try out the Ubuntu Backup system application on my 11.10 partition. Currently I am just using the default settings to back up folders in my Home (~) folder to the deja-dup in my Ubuntu One cloud. I have not been able to figure out how to view which files have been saved to the backup location other than by restoring them to a temp folder and then seeing what was restored. I'm hoping there is a less kludgy way to just find out what has or has not been backed up.

This really irritates me not simply because it is mispelled but more importantly it makes me ALWAYS get the method name wrong the first time I type it (and then I have to remember "Oh, right, it should be mispelled to this...") I'm making a few changes around the original method. Should I take the opportunity to just rename the freaking method?

    There is no easy way to track real-time per-user bandwidth usage for SSH and SFTP. I think assigning one port to each user may help. Idea of implementation Use case Bob, with UID 1001, shall connect on port 31001. Alice, with UID 1002, shall connect on port 31002. John, with UID 1003, shall connect on port 31003. (I do not want to lauch several sshd instances as proposed in question 247291.) 1. Setup for SFTP: In /etc/ssh/sshd_config: Port 31001 Port 31002 Port 31003 Subsystem sftp /usr/bin/sftp-wrapper.sh The file sftp-wrapper.sh starts the sftp server only if the port is the correct one: #!/bin/sh mandatory_port=3`id -u` current_port=`echo $SSH_CONNECTION | awk '{print $4}'` if [ $mandatory_port -eq $current_port ] then exec /usr/lib/openssh/sftp-server fi 2.   • LVM vs RAID0 vs RAID "linear" - Combine 2 disks as one, data recovery?

    Hi there, given two 2TB USB external disks that have to be combined to one 4TB volume and formatted with one big Filesystem (XFS), I have a small question to ask. Does LVM provide better Data recovery, should one disk be unplugged/damaged by being able to recover the data of the still working disk or is everything lost? I would appreciate a solution where only the data of one disk is lost and I can recover the content of the other with the usual filesystem/lvm/raid tools. Is that possible with LVM or RAID "linear"? This is for storing unimportant files that can be retrieved from backup, but I want to save time :) Thank you in advance

  • Oneric Aspire One. After latest 11.10 update to Linux 3.0.0-9 boot hangs at staement "Starting Bluetooth"

    I have today updated the version of Linux on Ubuntu on my Acer Aspire One. The boot hangs on the statement "Starting Bluetooth". Help please!! EDIT1: I get the grub menu when I start the netbook and it doesn´t matter which version of linux I choose the resulkt is the same. It gets as far as the Ubuntu spash screen then drops into command line mode then hangs on the line "Starting Bluetooth". I can log in and have tried various forms of the apt-get command to fix the system but with no result. I do not need bluetooth at the moment and so could remove the application if I knew how. (have tried apt-get remove bluez). When I use the command sudo apt-get -f install I get an error message saying "There's not enough space in /var/lib/mysql/" folowed by several other error messages. I have spent some time looking for similar problems and solutions using google but so far got to nothing to help. Thanks EDIT2: I have since discovered when running Knoppix or slitaz from a usb stick that the file managers report the hard disc as having no space. However GPARTED reports it as having 3.69gb. I do recall making space on the hard drive by deleting some old files and emptying trash whilst the update was running; perhaps its related. Any suggestions for how I can recover the apparently lost space from hard disc without losing the data. I have backups of the actual data but do not wnat to lose the applcations configuration.   • Moving a "All-in-one" PC when turned on/off.

    I have an "all-in-one" pc. I know that moving a pc when it is switched on is harmful to the hardware components. What I would like to know is if the same applies to "all-in-one" pc's and if the same applies to regularly moving it from one side of the room to the other when it is turned off! The reason for the question is that I work on one desk during the day, and in the evening move it to the couch so I can do other stuff while watching TV or something. I always turn it off before the move, but somebody told me that I can be damaging the machine by doing so. Can anybody shed some light on this? Many thanks

  • Best practice for structuring a new large ASP.NET MVC2 plus EF4 VS2010 solution?

    Hi, we are building a new web application using Microsoft ASP.NET MVC2 and Entity Framework 4. Although I am sure there is not one right answer to my question, we are struggling to agree a VS2010 solution structure. The application will use SQL Server 2008 with a possible future Azure cloud version. We are using EF4 with T4 POCOs (model-first) and accessing a number of third-party web-services. We will also be connecting to a number of external messaging systems. UI is based on standard ASP.NET (MVC) with jQuery. In future we may deliver a Silverlight/WPF version - as well as mobile. So put simply, we start with a VS2010 blank solution - then what? I have suggested 4 folders Data (the EF edmx file etc), Domain (entities, repositories), Services (web-services access), Presentation (web ui etc). However under Presentation, creating the ASP.NET MVC2 project obviously creates it's own Models folder etc and it just doesn't seem to fit too well in this proposed structure. I'm also missing a business layer (or does this sit in the domain?). Again I am sure there is no one right way to do it, but I'd really appreciate your views on this. Thanks

  • Can you work for the big (Google, Microsoft, Facebook etc.) without getting too much involved?

    Having seen people talking about interviewing and working for the big companies, I keep wondering how much are you expected to actually get involved in there. 1) That's because I keep seeing folks from Google and Microsoft and others writing in forums, blogging, tweeting, speaking at conferences and seemingly doing this on the 24/7/365 basis from their office, apartment, hotel and even plane. Are you really expected to commit that much if you come to work for them? Do they want you to think about your work while you're eating, sleeping, taking a shower, making love and so on? Can you in fact "switch off" at five and go home forgetting everything? Perhaps you have a hobby, family life, kids, friends, personal projects anyone? Is it so that if you work for the big then you're expected not to have any life outside of the company? You can't develop own projects, have own clients and just have another life? 2) One other thing is the work contracts the big use. I've heard for instance that when you join Microsoft you need to provide a list of projects you're currently working on and after that anything new you'll come up with during your employment automatically belongs to the company. Are all of the big doing this? Can you deny signing a contract until such clause is removed or with the big it is "take it or leave it" because the legal department won't accept any change? Can you make them write the contract in that manner that they step away from anything you've developed in your private time? Of all the big I have only been at SAP during my internship. Lately while browsing through the old papers I've found my old contact which stipulated they owned everything I developed or invented during my employment, which I would never have signed these days. On a side note I don't think I would return to SAP since I remember most people there were clueless and provided the impression they were simply sitting out their years waiting for the retirement. But anyway, what do the other big put in their contracts? How far do you get involved when you go working for the big? Or perhaps fully committed with your body and soul? P.S. I'm not planning to join any of them I'm just curious.

  • Generating custom-form documents from base-form plus XML?

    Hi all, this is my first stack overflow, and it's a complex one. Sorry. My task is to generate custom documents from a basic template plus some XML without having a custom form design element for each case. Here's the whole picture: We are building a Lotus Notes (client, not web) application for world-wide application access control; the scope is something like 400.000 users being able to request access to any of 1000+ applications. Each application needs its own request form -- different number of approvers, various info required, that sort of thing. We simply can't have a thousand forms in a database (one per application), and anyway their maintenance really needs to be pushed from the developers to the application owners. So instead of custom forms, we'd like to create a generic "template" form that stores a block of basic fields, but then allows application owners to define another block of fields dynamically -- "I want a mandatory plain-text field named 'Name' here, and then a date field named 'Due' here that must be later than today's date, and then ...". I hope this makes sense (if not, think of it as a generic questionnaire application). I pretty much have the structure in place for designing the dynamic fields (form builder GUI - XML-encoded data - pre-rendered DXL for injecting into a form), including mark-up for field types, value options, and rudimentary field validation instructions. My problem is generating a document with this dynamic content injected at the proper location (without needing a custom form design element for each case). Doing the dynamic content via HTML is out. The Notes client web rendering is simply way too poor, and it would be quite a challenge to implement things like field validation instructions, date selectors, and name look-ups. DXL, on the other hand, would allow us to use native Notes fields and code. As a tech demo, I've managed to implement a custom form generator that injects the pre-rendered DXL for the dynamic content into a base form; but as I said, we don't want a ton of custom form design elements. I've tried to implement a way to create a document with the "store form in document" flag set, but once I've created the document from the base form, I can't get DXL access to the stored form design, and so I can't inject my dynamic content. I know this is not something Notes was ever intended to do. Has anyone ever tried something like it (and gotten away with it)? Thanks for reading this far.     I have about 20 years of experience with programming, most of that on the job, and right now, I define myself as a Web Developer, because I think about half my expertise lies in the all too extended "web" field, both server side and client side, and because in the last years I'm mostly doing web development. I know my javascript, jQuery, jQueryUI, HTML4-5, css2-3 and some frameworks like backbone.js and angularJS Since university I've always been interested in Man-Machine Interaction, UI and UX. Recently, I saw the label "Web UI Developer" tossed around, and I thought that would be something I would like to qualify for. And I'd really like to qualify with confidence. I didn't find any certificate or similar, and I don't think there are any. Is the only way to qualify as a Web UI Developer having a job as one? What are the skills I need to have, and the resources I can use to acquire them?

    I'm interested in learning a stack-oriented programming language (such as Forth), which one would you recommend? The qualities I want are: You should be able to develop non-trivial software in it, but it mustn't be a great language for that as: I want to learn the language so I can try out a new paradigm (that is, not because I (think) that I will have great use of it). The reason I want to learn another paradigm is that I want to broaden my views on different approaches (learn to think in new ways, different from OOP, functional and structured). The language should let me do that (learn to think differently). The language should have available and good resources to learn from. The resources should also approach stack-oriented programming in a way that you understand the paradigm (after all, I do this for the paradigm).
