  Could anyone explain to me why is it that producers of processors claim that their processor can perform so many thousands (or millions) operations per second and yet typical program (Word, VS etc.) on my machine with 4GB, 3500hz starts with no less than 10sek. Have to mention that I've just formatted disk and tick any necessarry boxes to optimize my machine. So if for example outlook starts in 10 sek I wonder how many millions of operations have to be performed to run such program? Thanks

• Want to turn old Powerbook Mac into small form factor desktop

  I've got an old powerbook g4. Battery is totally dead, as is the superdrive. I've looked into selling but it's worth less than it would cost to ship it safely. So I'm considering cracking it open and and taking it's parts and creating some kind of small form factor desktop, probably for the living room. I don't need an optical drive, I really just would like Mac OSX, without purchasing a Mac Mini. Anyone got any tips?

  I am sure a directory file has much less information than 4096 bytes. I know the sector size is 4096 bytes. But normal files smaller than that do exist. Why does Unix reserve 4096 bytes for each folder?

Ppl from Dell told me that lefthand SAN require at least two nodes and data must be mirroring between them so capacity is a half less compare to other SAN technology (e.g.Equal Logic). Is it true?   So, for the third time in about two weeks (maybe less), one of our customers has had their password compromised, and a spammer was sending mail with their account using our webmail. As a result, our outgoing mail server has been listed at Spamhaus, and a lot of our outgoing mail is being rejected. I can't think of any way to prevent this from happening (although now our webmail server is using Sendmail instead of SMTP, but that just limits the scope of the problem), yet the big ISPs never seem to have a problem like this.

  RAM is just used for temporary storage. But since this storage is in the cpu memory (RAM) it is fast. Programs can easily read/write values into it. I've noticed more the RAM less time it takes for the application to load/execute. But doesn't this actually depend of the processor speed (MHz or GHz values). I am wondering what is the science/relationship between processor speed and RAM.

  We have an SQL Server 2005 that is the backend of a web application. The application is partly SharePoint and partly web services accessing the database via Entity Framework. In the performance monitor I am seeing average SQL Logins is ca, 60 per second (max 170), but the average logouts is less than 1. Where can I see the total number of SQL Server logins? Anyone have an idea what could be causing this?

• Node app crashes after a while on micro EC2 instance even with supervisor

  I'm using supervisor to start my node.js application on a micro EC2 instance. However, the app only stays running for some time until it eventually shuts down. Not exactly sure how long the app stays running but I'm guessing for about a few hours or so. Sometimes less. • Apache server immediately shuts down

  I just installed MySql 5.1.49, Apache 2.2.16 and PHP 5.3.3 on my Vista Home Basic. I followed the instructions in the "Sam's Teach Yourself", adding: LoadModule php5_module C:/php/php5apache2_2.dll PHPIniDir "C:/php/" and AddType application/x-httpd-php .php .html I changed the Listening port to 8080 and the domain is localhost. When I start the server it pops open the window for less than a second and then closes. What am I missing? Thanks.

  As I understand it, you can do: Windows 2008 + Hyper-V role Windows Hyper-V Server (which is free I believe) Windows 2008 Core + Hyper-V Role I'm assuming that Core + Hyper-V and Hyper-V Server have the smallest footprint, and therefore better performing, less patching, etc. What other trade-offs/compromises would there be compared to the full Windows + Hyper-V role? However, I've read somewhere that Enterprise comes with four Enterprise 2008 (4) guest VM licenses (I think Standard gives you two (2)). Can someone clarify these statements?
