  • Where to put code documentation?

    I am currently using two systems to write code documentation (am using C++): Documentation about methods and class members are added next to the code, using the Doxygen format. On a server Doxygen is run on the sources so the output can be seen in a web browser Overview pages (describing a set of classes, the structure of the application, example code, ...) is added to a Wiki I personally think that this approach is easy because the documentation about members and classes is really close to the code, while the overview pages are really easy to edit in the Wiki (and it's also easy to add images, tables, ...). A web browser allows you to see both documentations. My co-worker now suggests to put everything in Doxygen, because we can then create one big help file with everything in it (using either Microsoft's HTML WorkShop or Qt Assistant). My concern is that editing Doxygen-style documentation is much harder (compared to Wiki), especially when you want to add tables, images, ... (or is there a 'preview' tool for Doxygen that doesn't require you to generate the code before you can see the result?) What do big open-source (or closed source) projects use to write their code documentation? Do they also split this up between Doxygen-style and a Wiki? Or do they use another system? What is the most appropriate way to expose the documentation? Via a Web server/browser, or via a big (several 100MB) help file? Which approach do you take when writing code documentation?

  • no aparece grub con gpt windows/ubuntu

    I have an asus k55VM. The problem is that once done the partitions to install windows 7 finalize you and then ubuntu 12.10 the grub not to appear. On having created the table of partitions with gparted I did it in format msdos but then on having installed windows gently accepted me and he says to me that I must do it with format gpt therefore I erase the disc in the assistant of installation and believe a partition of 160 gb Later between with live CD to ubuntu and believe other partitions between which, one ext4 for ubuntu... I install and restart. On having restarted the grub does not go out but if the partitions appear of windows. To seeing if someone helps me am desperate. Thank you very much Tengo un asus k55VM. El problema es que una vez hechas las particiones instalar windows 7 ultimate y luego ubuntu 12.10 no aparece el grub. Al crear la tabla de particiones con gparted lo hice en formato msdos pero luego al instalar windows no me acepta y me dice que debo hacerlo con formato gpt por lo tanto borro el disco en el asistente de instalacion y creo una particion de 160 gb Posteriormente entre con live cd a ubuntu y creo otras particiones entre las cuales, un ext4 para ubuntu... Instalo y reinicio. Al reiniciar no sale el grub pero si aparecen las particiones de windows. A ver si alguien me ayuda estoy desesperado. Muchas gracias

  • Starting out with OpenGL when most tutorials are out of date

    I'm sure there are already a bunch of questions like this asked, but the constant updating of the OpenGL library throws them all away, and in a month or two, the answers here will be worthless again. I am ready to start programming in OpenGL using C++. I've got a working compiler (DevCpp; do NOT ask me to switch to VC++, and don't ask me why). Now I'm just looking for a solid tutorial on how to program with OpenGL. My assistant found the tutorial provided by NeHe Productions, but as I've come to find out, it's WAY OUT OF DATE! (although I did pull together a basic window to support an OpenGL canvas) Then I went online, and found the OpenGL SuperBible, which apparently uses freeglut? But what I'd like to know is whether or not SuperBible 5th edition is up to date any longer. The suggestion to freeglut I found said the latest version was 2.6.0 but now it's 2.8.0! Is the OpenGL SuperBible still a good, and fairly up-to-date place to start? Is there a better place to go to learn OpenGL? Am I allowed to simply store freeglut in the DevCpp include directory (maybe in GL), or is there some important procedure? Are there any comments or suggestions that I didn't think to ask since I'm only just beginning? @dreta cleared some things up for me, so now I have a better idea of what to ask: I think I'd like to start out with OpenGL using a wrapper library instead of directly accessing OpenGL.I just think that, for a beginner, it would be easier for me to program and get good results, while I don't yet have to understand all the grimy details (as @stephelton mentioned). The problem is, I can't find any library that doesn't have undefined references to no longer supported functions. Freeglut sounds operational, but it still uses GLU.Does anyone know what I can do?Also, I tried compiling the first SuperBible's source, but I got errors since GLAPI is not being defined as a type, the error originating in the GLU library. I'd like to use the SuperBible, but I don't know how to fix this.

  • Open Source Software Development Center at University of Belgrade

    A new Open Source Software Development Center is open at University of Belgrade, Serbia. It centers around using Java & NetBeans as open source projects to learn from and contribute to. Assistant Professor Zoran Sevarac says that not only does the center allow him to teach software development using open source projects, but also "we are improving our University courses based on the experience we get from working on open source code."  Some of the projects underway are a NetBeans UML plugin; Neuroph (a Java neural network framework, with a NetBeans Platform-based UI); a NetBeans DOAP Plugin; WorkieTalkie (NetBeans chat plugin); and 2D and 3D visualization plugins for NetBeans. University of Belgrade also has an official university course about open source development, where students learn to use development tools, work in teams, participate in open source projects and learn from real world software development projects. Students, teachers, and researchers at the University of Belgrade, and any member of the open source community are welcome to come to learn software development from successful open source projects.     Gmail users can now easily send large files thanks to Google Drive’s increased integration with Gmail–blow through the 25MB in-email attachment limit and share files up to 10GB. From the official Gmail announcement: Have you ever tried to attach a file to an email only to find out it’s too large to send? Now with Drive, you can insert filesup to 10GB – 400 times larger than what you can send as a traditional attachment. Also, because you’re sending a file stored in the cloud, all your recipients will have access to the same, most-up-to-date version.  Like a smart assistant, Gmail will also double-check that your recipients all have access to any files you’re sending.   • Diving into a computer science career [closed]

    Well first I would like to say thank you for taking the time to read my question. I'll give you some background. I graduated two years ago from a local UC in my state with a degree in cognitive psychology and worked in a neuroscience lab. During this time I was exposed to some light Matlab programming and other programming tidbits, but before this I had some basic understanding of programming. My father worked IT for a company when I was younger so I picked up his books and took learned things along the way growing up. Naturally I'm an inquisitive person, constantly learning, love challenges, and have had exposure to some languages. Yet at this point I was fully pursue it as a career and always had this in the back of my head. Where do I start? I'm 25 and feel like I still have time to make a switch. I've immersed myself in the terminal/command prompt to start, but which language do I focus on? I've read the A+ book and planning to take on the exam, then the networking exam, but I want to deal with more programming, development, and troubleshooting. I understand to get involved in open source, but where? I took the next step and got a small IT assistant job, but doesn't really deal with programming, development, just troubling shooting and small network issues. Thank you!

  • How to learn to program [on hold]

    I went to a community college and got a degree in computer science, but I found out I only learn very little about programming. As a result I landed byself a office assistant work (for a year now), I want to study on my own and apply for some internship / very entry level development job. I am wondering how should a person learn to program now? I feel that I might not doing it correctly, I understand everyone has a different approach, but I am really clueless on what to do, as it seems I am 5-10 years away. 1) Read the old college programming textbook cover to cover, learn every single concepts, do all the practice problems and master them (1-2 times until error free). Currently reading this java book 2) Work on any project, keep on googling and reading tutorials (including the books on that specific language). I have been doing 1, but the progress is really slow, about 2-5 pages / hour, over a 1000+ page book, I felt really discouraged. I have a few of them to go through (data struction, analyis algorthim, computer theory, operating system.) I wonder is this the right method to do? I know it is going to take time, but I am hoping to get some advice from current programmers.

  • How do I repair the corrupted files found by sfc /scannow? "Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them."

    After running chkdsk C: /F /R and finding out that my hard disk has 24 KB in bad sectors (log is posted below), I decided to run Windows 7's System File Checker utility (sfc /scannow). SFC showed the ff. message after I ran it: "Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. Details are included in the CBS.Log windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log." Since the CBS.log file is too large, I ran findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\Logs\CBS\CBS.log >"%userprofile%\Desktop\sfcdetails.txt" (as per Microsoft's KB 928228 article) to only get the log text pertaining to the corrupt files. (log is also posted below) How do I troubleshoot and repair the corrupted files mentioned by sfc /scannow? This morning I was looking at AwStats log of the new domain, and was surpised to notice that in the "HTTP Status codes"section, 301 redirects score 77% of the whole codes (seems 200 are not tracked here). So, what is the proper meaning of the 301 code in those stats? Does it mean that 77% of traffic is incoming (referrer) from 301 redirects or?

    I'm building a Rails application using MongoDB as the back-end and MongoMapper as the ORM tool. Suppose in version 1, I define the following model: class SomeModel include MongoMapper::Document key :some_key, String end Later in version 2, I realize that I need a new required key on the model. So, in version 2, SomeModel now looks like this: class SomeModel include MongoMapper::Document key :some_key, String key :some_new_key, String, :required => true end How do I migrate all my existing data to include some_new_key? Assume that I know how to set a reasonable default value for all the existing documents. Taking this a step further, suppose that in version 3, I realize that I really don't need some_key at all. So, now the model looks like this class SomeModel include MongoMapper::Document key :some_new_key, String, :required => true end But all the existing records in my database have values set for some_key, and it's just wasting space at this point. How do I reclaim that space? With ActiveRecord, I would have just created migrations to add the initial values of some_new_key (in the version1 - version2 migration) and to delete the values for some_key (in the version2 - version3 migration). What's the appropriate way to do this with MongoDB/MongoMapper? It seems to me that some method of tracking which migrations have been run is still necessary. Does such a thing exist? EDITED: I think people are missing the point of my question. There are times where you want to be able to run a script on a database to change or restructure the data in it. I gave two examples above, one where a new required key was added and one where a key can be removed and space can be reclaimed. How do you manage running these scripts? ActiveRecord migrations give you an easy way to run these scripts and to determine what scripts have already been run and what scripts have not been run. I can obviously write a Mongo script that does any update on the database, but what I'm looking for is a framework like migrations that lets me track which upgrade scripts have already been run.
