• Visual Studio opening .xml files in Notepad

  So I'm happily working on a project making heavy use of custom .xml configuration files this morning. All of a sudden, whenever I double-click an .xml file in Solution Explorer, it opens in Notepad instead of within Visual Studio. Thinking that it was the Windows file associations, I right-clicked on a file in Explorer, selected Open With Choose Defaults, and selected Visual Studio 2008. But the problem remains -- now when I open a file from Explorer, Visual Studio Opens, then it opens Notepad. Needless to say, this is very frustrating, and Google is not much help. Has anyone else ever had this problem, and what did you do about it? Notes: This only happens for .xml files. Other text files (.config, .txt) open within Visual Studio just fine. This has nothing to do with Windows file associations, as Windows open up VS2008 just as it should. This is some crazy problem internal to Visual Studio. I've also tried Tools Options General Restore File Associations. No luck. Nothing present in Tools Options Text Editor File Extension This is what my "Open With" menu looks like for .xml files. As you can see, "XML Editor" is set to the default.

• Simple description of worker and I/O threads in .NET

  It's very hard to find detailed but simple description of worker and I/O threads in .NET What's clear to me regarding this topic (but may not be technically precise): Worker threads are threads that should employ CPU for their work; I/O threads (also called "completion port threads") should employ device drivers for their work and essentially "do nothing", only monitor the completion of non-CPU operations. What is not clear: Although method ThreadPool.GetAvailableThreads returns number of available threads of both types, it seems there is no public API to schedule work for I/O thread. You can only manually create worker thread in .NET? It seems that single I/O thread can monitor multiple I/O operations. Is it true? If so, why ThreadPool has so many available I/O threads by default? In some texts I read that callback, triggered after I/O operation completion is performed by I/O thread. Is it true? Isn’t this a job for worker thread, considering that this callback is CPU operation? To be more specific – do ASP.NET asynchronous pages user I/O threads? What exactly is performance benefit in switching I/O work to separate thread instead of increasing maximum number of worker threads? Is it because single I/O thread does monitor multiple operations? Or Windows does more efficient context switching when using I/O threads?

• Capturing mouse events for specific dom/web elements in QT

  Hi I would like to know if it is possible in QTWebKit to install an event filter or capture events that occur from specific Dom elements. For example, my webview is showing a webpage that has text, images and an edit box, I want to disable the right-clicking and highlighting functionality on the text and images but at the same time when the user right-clicks inside the edit box, I want to display my context menu. I am not sure where should I install my event filter, in QwebView or QwebPage... currently this is what I'm using: MainWindow::MainWindow() { centralWidget = new WebView(this); setCentralWidget(centralWidget); centralWidget->webView->installEventFilter(this); //No mouse events are rising on QWebPage //centralWidget->webView->page()->installEventFilter(this); } As its clear in the code above, when installing an EventFilter on QwebPage, I never receive any QMouseEvents, not by moving clicking or releasing any mouse buttons. While when setting it to filter events from QWebView it works fine. I am really interested with the first part of my question as to how handle Dom elements differently. How can I achieve such goal?   I'm trying to write an SQL statement that will generate an SQL script that will update a BLOB field with an IMAGE being selected from the database. This is what I have: select concat( 'UPDATE `IMAGE` SET THUMBNAIL = ', QUOTE( THUMBNAIL ), ' WHERE ID = ', ID, ';' ) as UPDATE_STATEMENT from IMAGE; In the above, THUMBNAIL is a BLOB field containing raw image data. When I run the resulting script I get the following error: ERROR at line 2: Unknown command '\\'. I first tried this without the QUOTE() function, like so: select concat( 'UPDATE `IMAGE` SET THUMBNAIL = \'', THUMBNAIL, '\' WHERE ID = ', ID, ';' ) as UPDATE_STATEMENT from IMAGE; Running the resulting script produces this error: ERROR at line 2: Unknown command '\0'. What is the proper function to apply to this BLOB field in the select, so the UPDATE statements will work? If context is required, I'm looking to migrate thumbnails generated on one server to another server for certain image IDs only. I would use mysqldump, but I don't want to clobber the entire table. Any help is greatly appreciated!

• ASP.NET MVC: How to create a usable UrlHelper instance?

  I am using quartz.net to schedule regular events within asp.net mvc application. The scheduled job should call a service layer script that requires a UrlHelper instance (for creating Urls based on correct routes (via urlHelper.Action(..)) contained in emails that will be sent by the service). I do not want to hardcode the links into the emails - they should be resolved using the urlhelper. The job: public class EvaluateRequestsJob : Quartz.IJob { public void Execute(JobExecutionContext context) { // where to get a usable urlHelper instance? ServiceFactory.GetRequestService(urlHelper).RunEvaluation(); } } Please note that this is not run within the MVC pipeline. There is no current request being served, the code is run by the Quartz scheduler at defined times. How do I get a UrlHelper instance usable on the indicated place? If it is not possible to construct a UrlHelper, the other option I see is to make the job "self-call" a controller action by doing a HTTP request - while executing the action I will of course have a UrlHelper instance available - but this seems a little bit hacky to me.

• Remove padding in wxPython's wxWizard

  Hi Guys, I'm using wxPython to create a wizard using the wxWizard control. I'm trying to a draw a colored rectangle but when I run the app, there seems to be a about a 10px padding on each side of the rectangle. This goes for all other controls too. I have to offset them a bit so that they appear exactly where I want them to. Is there any way I could remove this padding? • Quitting an application - is that frowned upon?

  Moving on in my attempt to learn Android I just read the following: Question: Does the user have a choice to kill the application unless we put a menu option in to kill it? If no such option exists, how does the user terminate the application? Answert (Romain Guy): The user doesn't, the system handles this automatically. That's what the activity lifecycle (especially onPause/onStop/onDestroy) is for. No matter what you do, do not put a "quit" or "exit" application button. It is useless with Android's application model. This is also contrary to how core applications work. Hehe, for every step I take in the Android world I run into some sort of problem =( Apparently, you cannot quit an application in Android (but Android can very well totally destroy your app whenever it feels like it). Whats up with that? I am starting to think that its impossible to write an app that functions as a "normal app" - that the user can quit the app when he/she decides to do so. That is not something that should be relied upon the OS to do. The application I am trying to create is not an application for the Android Market. It is not an application for "wide use" by the general public, it is a business app that is going to be used in a very narrow business field. I was actually really looking forward to developing for the Android-platform, since it addresses a lot of issues that exist in Windows Mobile and .NET. However, the last week has been somewhat of a turnoff for me... I hope I dont have to abandon Android, but it doesnt look very good right now =( Is there a way for me to really quit the application?

  Hello, I am using a platform (perfectforms) that requires me to use stored procedures for most of my queries, and having never used stored procedures, I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong. The following statement executes without error: DELIMITER // DROP PROCEDURE IF EXISTS test_db.test_proc// CREATE PROCEDURE test_db.test_proc() SELECT 'foo'; // DELIMITER ; But when I try to call it using: CALL test_proc(); I get the following error: #1312 - PROCEDURE test_db.test_proc can't return a result set in the given context I am executing these statements from within phpmyadmin 3.2.4, PHP Version 5.2.12 and the mysql server version is 5.0.89-community. When I write a stored procedure that returns a parameter, and then select it, things work fine (e.g.): DELIMITER // DROP PROCEDURE IF EXISTS test_db.get_sum// CREATE PROCEDURE test_db.get_sum(out total int) BEGIN SELECT SUM(field1) INTO total FROM test_db.test_table; END // DELIMITER ; works fine, and when I call it: CALL get_sum(@t); SELECT @t; I get the sum no problem. Ultimately, what I need to do is have a fancy SELECT statement wrapped up in a stored procedure, so I can call it, and return multiple rows of multiple fields. For now I'm just trying to get any select working. Any help is greatly appreciated.

  So I am trying to make a tabs in a menu but cant make the whole width of each of the tabs 219px. it only allows me to make the li 219 but I wanna make the li a 219px. I cant seem to figure it out. • Establishing persistent connection to a database in Java

  I've ran through several examples over the web, and found that every single time I need something from the DB, I should write the following code: try { // Step 1: Load the JDBC driver. "); System.err.println(e.getMessage()); } It's very annoying to put up this code every time I want something from the DB, so the question is - is there a way to only once connect entirely all my app to the DB somehow at the very start point, avoiding copy-pasting mentioned code, and then be able to do everything I want with DB? I've quickly looked through NetBeans's Project menu, but didn't find any clue on how to configurate a persistent connection to a selected DB. If it's important, i'm writing a purely desktop app, i.e. using Java EE. Also, it's worth mentioning that I'm a kinda beginner in Java.

Otherwise it sends error: System.IO.IOException: The process cannot access the file 'C:\Documents and Settings\ilija\My Documents\Visual Studio 2008\Projects\CMS\CMS\Uploads\Photos\26.jpg' because it is being used by another process. I also don't know if my file delete function is properly written. Searching on the net, I see everyone uses File.Delete(TheFile);, which i'm unable to use and I use TheFile.Delete(); For File.Delete(TheFile); i get following error: Error 1 'System.Web.Mvc.Controller.File(string, string, string)' is a 'method', which is not valid in the given context C:\Documents and Settings\ilija\My Documents\Visual Studio 2008\Projects\CMS\CMS\Controllers\PhotoController.cs 109 17 CMS Am I missing something here? • x86 .net application with system.OutOfMemoryException

  Hi,Guys I got OutOfMemoryException after the app running for 1 day, the app totally use 1.5G memory , all consumed by managed heap, gen 2 used 200mb , and LOB used 1.3mb, however the weired thing is, 900mb of space are Free. from perf counter I saw there had number of gen 2 gc collection happened, why GC collector cannot collect those 900mb free space in gen2 and LOB? • Quartz.Net scheduler works locally but not on remote host

  Hi. I have a timed quartz.net job working fine on my dev machine, but once deployed to a remote server it is not triggering. I believe the job is scheduled ok, because if I postback, it tells me the job already exists (I normally check for postback however). The email code definitely works, as the 'button1_click' event sends emails successfully. I understand I have full or medium trust on the remove server. My host says they don't apply restrictions that they know of which would affect it. • Subsonic in a VS2008 Add-In woes

  Hi, I am writing a VS2008 add-in that connects to a remote database blah blah. I am having a problem with the app.config in this project. When I use SubSonic in my code, it moans that is cannot find the SubSonicServer section. This is because the .config file cannot be found. This appears to a problem with paths as the add-in is a DLL running in the context of VS2008 and the working directory is C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 9.0\Common7\IDE. Is there a way to get the app.config to deploy properly with the application so my add-in (and SubSonic) can find what it needs in the .config file, or is there a way to get SubSonic to work without the need for the .config? I am very experienced in SubSonic projects now, but only winforms, web, web service, and WPF applications. This is the first time I have tried to use SubSonic in a VS2008 Add-In project. I also have AppSettings in the config file which the ConfigurationManager cannot read because it cannot see the .config file. 2AM now and brain is tired of trying to figure this one out. Hopefully there is an answer when I wake up :) TIA

• How can I create a finger scrollable Textbox in WM 6.5?

  Hi everybody. I just noticed something weird in WM 6.5 emulators. Unlike 6.1 where finger panning kind of worked, the only way to scroll a Textbox appears to be through scrollbars. This behaviour is in contrast to what they have done for comboboxes: they are now gesture-friendly without the programmer's intervention. I.e. the user can select a choice from a standard drop down menu by panning and scrolling. Previously, you had to use the embedded scrollbar. The combobox's case implies that MS took some measures to provide standard gesture support for classic finger gestures, yet I cannot see something similar for textboxes. This makes me ask the following: Is there anything that can be done to make textboxes finger scrollabe easily? Note that I refer to managed .NET CF development. It is my understanding that in native development I could use the new Gestures API to achieve the scrolling effect. Yet, I am not sure if there is an easier and more straightforward method that I have missed.

• Modal dialog focus problems on WPF application

  Hi, I have a problem with my wpf application where a modal dialog will appear behind the main application causing it to hang. It is very inconsistent, where most of the time the pop-up works correctly and is shown in front but occasionally it will pop-up behind, which stops any interaction with it. I can still close the dialog using the taskbar if this happens. I have noticed that it generally occurs when lots of other applications are open and the taskbar is full. Also, I am working with two screens and the problem only occurs on the screen with the taskbar - very wierd! The dialog is a window control, which contains an injected usercontrol as it's data context.
