• Suggestion for boot manager in external hard disk

  Hi, I just bought an 1TB External Hard drive with eSATA, USB, FW400/800 (LaCie if you are interested). I already put the windows 7 installation in a FAT32 active partition so i can plug the HDD via USB, since my notebook or other computers doesn't support boot via eSATA commonly, and it works. Now i want to do more partitions so i'm looking for a way to have a boot manager as active partitions that allows me to boot from different partitions in my HDD (win7, ubuntu installations for example) I want to know if you know any software to do this or you already have this system. • Cropping a PDF File's Margin During Printing

  I'm using the free Acrobat Reader to print out some pdf documents having very large top/bottom/left/right margins. I want to remove the margins (which are wasting too much space and making the fonts too small). I used to use Acrobat (the paid version having edit features) to crop the src pdf file manually. But since it is an old version it does not support new pdf format and I don't want to upgrade for such a simple use. Is there any free way to crop/remove unwanted white margins from the printed pdf? I am thinking to print the pdf files to a PDF Printer like the Bullzip PDF Printer and enlarge the output file manually so as to remove any white margin. But there does not seem to be such a feature in Bullzip PDF Printer. Is there any other virtual printer software that can be used for this purpose?

• Is Dell's server software bundle necessary? (Poweredge 2950 in my case)

  Hi all, Dell includes a fair amount of software with its servers, but I'm having a hard time determining from the documentation what each of them does, and whether or not I should install it. Dell's support site (unless I'm doing it wrong) seems fairly opaque to me and its offerings fairly unstandardized in terms of their usage, so if possible I'd like to stray away from them. Specifically, I'm curious if any of the features offered are duplicated in something like Microsoft System Center. For additional background information, I'm working with a Poweredge 2950 that was just rebuilt with an expanded raid-6, but initially I just installed Server 2008 R2 directly instead of using the Build and Update utility. There's nothing of use on it at the moment so I'm totally open to wiping it again.

I have designed the s/w architecture - we know various objects required, interactions required between various objects and IPC communication between tasks. Based on this information, i need to decide on the operating system(RTOS), microprocessor and memory size requirements. (Most likely i would be using Quadros, as it has been suggested by the client based on their prior experience in similar projects) But i am confused about which one to begin with, since choice of one could impact the selection of other. Could you also guide me on parameters to consider to estimate the memory requirements from the s/w design (lower limit and upper limit of memory requirement) ? (Cost of the component(s) could be ignored for this evaluation)

• Which databases support parallel processing across multiple servers?

  I need a database engine that can utilize multiple servers for processing a single SQL query in parallel. So far I know that this is possible with the some engines, though none of them are feasible for me either because of pricing or missing features. The engines currently known to me are: MS SQL (enterprise) DB2 (enterprise) Oracle (enterprise) GridSQL Greenplum Which other engines have this feature? • Is there a way to determine the original size or file count of a 7-zip archive?

  I know that when I compress an archive with the 7za utility, it gives me stats like the number of files processed and the amount of bytes processed (the original size of the data). Is it possible, using the commandline (on linux) or some programming language, to determine: the original size of an archive, before it was compressed? the number of files/directories contained within an archive? The answer might be "no, just decompress the whole archive and do counting/sizing then", but it would be useful to know if there was a faster/less space-greedy way.

• Issues with non-HP harddisk in HP ML 350 server?

  I'm looking to buy some extra disk space for a HP ML 350 G5 server. It is for simple file-serving - not OS/system stuff. HP harddisks are insanely expensive, so I'm tempted to buy some other brand instead. I have heard that they sometime use special firmware on their disks, but I suspect that might just be HP spreading rumors to sell disks. Does anyone have experience using non-HP disks? Any features not working, or not being able to build the RAID at all? I'm looking at 2.5" SAS Seagate drives - Constellation 500 GB (7.2k) or Savvio 600 GB (10k).

• How to stop mouse "pausing".

  My Microsoft mouse recently stopped working, so I purchased an AOpen O-35G, plug and play. No software came with it and I was advised to "just plug it in". I did this, and it worked, although some of the more advanced features do not work. My problem is that now the mouse cursor hesitates occasionally, and then over shoots the target I selected. This never happened before. It seems to happen when I am using the mouse and a browser window reloads. Does anyone know how to change this? It is very annoying. XP Pro SP3 Thanks. EDIT: It is not a problem of dust or a hair. I have contacted the Manufacturere and they are not responding. I have the mouse attached to my computer via a powered USB hub. I am going to try plugging it in directly to see if that makes a difference.

• Windows 8 Microsoft Account and Microsoft Store doesn't allow login

  The problem is that I have to go through proxy here in college to make my internet work. When I signed with my live id to switch to the Microsoft account in Windows 8, it recognized and validate my security questions but says it cannot connect to Microsoft Services. All other apps like mail, messenger, etc. work except for the Windows Store. The windows store what apps are available but when installed, queues it up for a pending download. Is there a way to modify my proxy settings so that I can access both these features?

Since these requests arise from the use of some external libraries, sometimes I am not sure of what is the actual data I am sending. Is there some dummy server (for Linux) that accepts HTTP requests and just prints them somewhere so that I can inspect them? • FTP Synchronization software for Mac or PC

  Hi, I've been using FTP Synchronizer for awhile and generally have had pretty good results with it. But, I've just moved to a Mac full-time (at work as well as home now) so want to get a native client if I can. I've tried the only one that I've found - SuperFlexibleSynchronizer - but it crashed every time I loaded up an FTP to FTP synch attempt. The most important features to me are: 1) ability to synch with a large number of files (thousands), as I generally work on sites with large number of files. 2) FTP to FTP synch. • Are there any HTPC-optimized web browsers?

  Features that I would ideally include in "HTPC-optimized": Full-screen. Navigable using a remote or the keyboard arrows. Legible at couch distances. Or, to put it another way, imagine the design requirements for Hulu Desktop or XBMC or WMC, applied to a web browser. Opera on a Wii meets most of these criteria but not being HD wastes a lot of potential. If a single solution doesn't exist, is there some combination of Firefox add-ons that will get me there?

• Mac OS X - Quickly change voices for Text-to-Speech

  I love the text to Speech feature of Mac OS X. Since I'm not a native English speaker I'm very happy about all the additional languages added since Lion came out. However, I do use English as well as my native language (German). Changing voices is a bit of a pain. It just requires too many steps to be comfortable. Is there any way to make this easy? I was looking for shortcuts, maybe a drop down menu somwhere up in the right corner, anything would be fine. Since my search was not successful, I hope to find some advice here on SuperUser. • What kind of router do I need to handle multiple external I.P addresses?

  I have 3 dedicated I.P addresses going to a location with a few servers, and 1 RVS4000 router. Right now, only one I.P is being used. I would like a router that can use all 3 I.P addresses and I can make rules like this: IP1:80 goes to ServerA IP2:80 goes to ServerB What kind of router/device with what features do I need to handle this? • balancing loudest and quietest speaker noises

  It is hard for me to find the right volume for my computer to watch my dvd's on because it seems like most reasonable volumes become overwhelming at the loudest parts of a movie and it is hard to even make out the dialog at the quietest parts. I find I'm constantly adjusting the volume during the course of a movie. Are there ways to make the difference between the louds and the quiets not so extreme? (both computer related solutions and non-computer related solutions welcome). Like moving my speakers across the room and increasing the volume? or the opposite? Or would would the extremes be less noticeable if I used headphones? Are there movie players that might have more complex sound adjustment features? • Why is cpu power management not working in Server 2012 with Hyper-V?

  We've been using Server2008R2 with Hyper-V for a couple of years now and chose it at the time because of its ability to make use of Intel SpeedStep and AMD PowerNow! Now with Server 2012 and Hyper-V V3, all power management abilities seem to be gone. The CPUs are always at full speed and our servers need twice the energy as before while idling. (Yes, the CPU P-states are enabled in the BIOS) Is this by design? Is there a workaround to enable cpu power management again? Despite the great new features of Hyper-V 3, this would be a show-stopper for us since we are very concerned about energy consumption.

• Install full version of Unity on Chrome OS using crouton

  I have an Acer Chromebook. Using crouton, I installed Ubuntu (unity) on it. I am pretty familiar Ubuntu 12.04. But the installed one is very minimized package. My fonts are missing and I manually installed language pack for Korean but still browser can't display Korean characters. Is there a way to install the whole packages via crouton like when you install Ubuntu 12.04 with the CD? Or is there a script that installs the missing packages on the bare Ubuntu? Thanks. Sam

• Hyper-V extensible virtual switch disables network

  I just installed the Hyper-V role on my Windows Server 2012. It comes with something called a "Hyper-V extensible virtual switch". I assigned it to the only network card in my server. By doing so, the network card became useless/disabled/inactive/.. because the virtual switch disabled all features (IPv4, IPv6, Client for Microsoft Networks, ...) on the network adapter. Is this supposed to happen? I admit I've no idea what this "extensible virtual switch" actually does. A short explanation would be nice as well.

• Sending UDP/514 data magically appears in syslog without rsyslog running

  I’m using a programming language without a library to log to rsyslog over UDP. I thought I was going to need to write a library but I discovered something weird. If I send data on UDP/514 with the port open on the server then the data appears in the server’s syslog. rsyslogd isn’t running so syslog isn’t doing this. Data doesn’t get formatted into a syslog message so rsyslogd really isn’t doing this (only raw text enters syslog). Linux must see the data coming in on this port and know that it should go into /var/log/messages? If I do the same on another port (e.g. UDP/515) then nothing appears in the log! What is doing this? Some CentOS feature? The kernel?

• esxi 5.1 - copy paste host config doesn't work?

  I followed these instructions for esxi 5.1 to enable copy paste from the host config. (search for "To enable this option for all the virtual machines in the ESX/ESXi host:") http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=1026437 But copy and paste doesn't work for new VMs or existing VMs. Did I do something wrong somewhere? • How to re-install IIS with factory settings?

  I had made some changes in IIS 7.5 on Win 7 and after that it has been not working correctly. The website are not opening and they are giving errors. I already tried installing/re-installing IIS using "Turn Windows features on or off" but it didn't help. I also tried to replace "ApplicationHost.Config" file inside "C:\Windows\System32\inetsrv\config" with the backup file in "%systemdrive%\inetpub\history" directory but this also didn't help. I want to have the IIS with default factory settings. Thanks!

• How can I create an encrypted, bootable thumbdrive containing Linux?

  I want to have a bootable flash drive that's fully encrypted. I have not tested, but seem to like, TrueCrypt, which provides a fully encrypted system and has lots of other features I like (for instance, hidden volumes). Unfortunately, it seems, system encryption is only supported for Windows, although I'm not sure why. The crux here, I guess, is that you need a boot loader that is capable of asking for your password and decrypt the disk, at least the part that contains kernel and initrd. An alternative might be to have an unencrypted boot partition containing a more powerful system which will decrypt and mount the main partition. However, this brings up the question of whether you're introducing data leaks. Depending on the specific scenario, I may lack the experience to assess if this is a problem. So I'd strongly prefer a fully encrypted disk or a similarly straightforward alternative.

Kaseya is 1400 mo for 1000 agents. the tech console is a beautiful web 2.0 web portal but only runs in IE Labtech is 589 mo for 500 agents. the tech console is a feature rich application that caches and syncs back to the server. very snappy no load time between clicks. Labtech and Kaseya promise the same features. Kaseya seems far more developed less bugs and just works, but Labtech looks better engineered is easier to get into and is rumored to be a potential Kaseya killer.
