• Is it OK to open a DB4o file for query, insert, update multiple times?

• ExecutorService memory leak on exception

  I am having a hard time tracking this down since the profiler keeps crashing (hotspot error). Before I go too deep into figuring it out I'd like to know if I really have a problem or not :-) I have a few thread pools created via: Executors.newFixedThreadPool(10); The threads connect to different web sites and, on occasion, I get connection refused and wind up throwing an exception. When I later on call Future.get() to get the result it will then catch the ExecutionException that wraps the exception that was thrown when the connection could not be made. The program uses a fairly constant amount of memory up until the point in time that the exceptions get thrown (they tend to happen in batches when a particular site is overloaded). After that point the memory again remains constant but at a higher level. So my question is along the lines of is the memory behaviour (reported by "top" on Unix) expected because the exceptions just triggered something or do I probably have an actual leak that I'll need to track down? Additionally when Future.get() throws an exception is there anything else I need to do besides catch the exception (such as call Future.cancel() on it)?

  I have to write an OpenOffice add-on (in Java) which communicates with DCOM server of some closed-source application. The major problem is that, I don't have any documentation about server's Interfaces . All I have is a VB/C++ SDK kit for the Application. SDK contain a library in dll and a bunch of *.tlb files. In SDK documentation there is an information, I can use java, but there is no example at all. I have read provided examples and it looks like all the communication wit DCOM goes through this dll. Is there a way to somehow import such dll/tlb functions def directly to java, bypass dll and comunicate with DCOM or I have to write a C++ wrapper(dll)? What is the best way to do it? Any hints are welcomed.

• If terminating a hung thread is a good idea, how do I do it safely?

  My Delphi program relies heavily on Outlook automation. Outlook versions prior to 2007-SP2 tend to get stuck in memory due to badly written addins and badly written Outlook code. If Outlook is stuck, calling CreateOleObject('Outlook.Application') or GetActiveObject ... doesn't return and keeps my application hanging till Outlook.exe is closed in the task manager. I've thought of a solution, but I'm unsure whether it's good practice or not. I'd start Outlook with CreateOleObject in a separate thread, wait 10 seconds in my main thread and if Outlook hangs (CreateOleObject doesn't return), offer the user to kill the Outlook.exe process from my program. But since I don't want to force the user to kill the Outlook.exe process, as an alternative I also need a way to kill the new thread in my program which keeps hanging now. Is this good practice? How can I terminate a hanging thread in Delphi without leaking memory?

• "NT AUTHORITY\ANONYMOUS LOGON" error in Windows 7 (ASP.NET & Web Service)

  I have an asp.net web app which works fine in Windows XP machine in a domain. I am porting it to a Windows 7 stand alone machine. The app uses a web service which makes a call to sql server. The web server (IIS 7.5) and SQL Server are on the same stand alone machine. I enabled Windows authentication for the website and web service. The web service uses a trusted connection connection string. The web service credentials uses System.Net.CredentialCache.DefaultCredentials. I noticed username, password and domainname are blank after the call! The webservice and web site use an application pool with identity "Network Service". I am getting an exception "NT AUTHORITY\ANONYMOUS LOGON" in the database call in the web service. I am assuming it's related to the blank credentials. I am expecting ASPNET user to be the security token to the database. Why is this not happening? (Usually this happens when sql server and web server are on two different machines in a domain, delegation & double hopping, but in my case everything is on a dev box)

  I'm implementing a ruby server for handling sockets being created from GPRS modules. The thing is that when the module powers down, there's no indication that the socket closed. I'm doing threads to handle multiple sockets with the same server. What I'm asking is this: Is there a way to use a timer inside a thread, reset it after every socket input, and that if it hits the timeout, closes the thread? Where can I find more information about this? • Making "helper" windows in WPF

  I'm writing an app in WPF and want to make a "helper" window. The window needs to be resizable, with no minimize option and doesn't show in the taskbar. If the app receives focus, it should appear as well, but whether or not it's in front or behind the main window should be retained. When the main window is closed, it should close along with the app. An example is a detached pane in Visual Studio. I've made the helper windows not appear in the taskbar, but can't get the rest of the behaviors I want. If they're their own windows, they don't get focus along with the rest of the app. If I specify a the main window as their owner, the main window can't be on top of the helper window. Anyone know a good way to approach this?

  Project Euler I have recently begun to solve some of the Project Euler riddles. I found the discussion forum in the site a bit frustrating (most of the discussions are closed and poorly-threaded), So I have decided to publish my Python solutions on launchpad for discussion. The problem is that it seems quite unethical to publish these solutions, as it would let other people gain reputation without doing the programming work, which the site deeply discourages. My Encryption problem I want to encrypt my answers so that only those who have already solved the riddles can see my code. The logical key would be the answer to the riddle, which is always numeric. In order to prevent brute-force attacks on my answers, I want to find an encryption algorithm that takes a significantly long time (few seconds) to run. Do you know any such algorithm? I would fancy a Python package, which I can attach to the code, over an external program that might have portability issues. Thanks, Adam

  I'd like a free library for .NET to get attachments from an account (such as gMail, or others) via imap4 (not necessarely), and save them in a folder. Ideally it would allow me to get a list of them, and download only some given ones (filtering by extension, name, and/or size) and be free.   In C#, I am using form1 as homescreen,.. while running exe from Debug folder, form1.exe appears in Process tab in task manager,... The problem is: Through form1 at runtime, i may create more instances of form1 while trying to close particular instance, the instances closed,.. but still exe appears in task manager. what i found: If i close the instances in the order what we created,.. all exe closes correctly,.. but if close the 4th instance and then 3rd instance,.. exe remains in task manager. (instead of 3rd and then 4th instance) I also used Application.Exit() but still the Exe remains in taskmanager,......

  Hi, I have a simple doubt. Does the ipc mechanism in qt work when we use it for developing browser plugins? The reason i ask this is that I can easily get the QLocalSocket and QLocalServer communication to work in a qt application, but when i write a similar piece of code in a browser plugin dll i see that the server does not accept a new connection at all.   Hello, what is the best practice to handle multiple EARs and the same transaction, as far as we know we need to apply XA concepts in order transaction works correctly. but apparently in currents project that we've been working on, this is not strictly necessary for creates and updates; however if we try to retrieve any collection from an entity we get an error that say there its not an active transaction or it was closed, but if we update Entity A in Ear A and update Entity B in Ear B it works perfectly when Entity A and Entity B has different datasources, at this point we are so confused about that, because we haven't configure any xa datasource yet. how is the best approach to work with this. transaction are handles by beans and not by the container and datasource are different between EAR A and EAR B

• Data truncation when retrieving data from MySQL database with prepared statements

  I have a script that retrieves multiple products using prepared statements. Like putting loops into loops, I have prepared statements in prepared statements - so there is a prepared statement for retrieving all products, a prepared statement to retrieve all images for that product, a prepared statement to get all attributes for that products, and so on. This does not work with one MySQLi instance, so I use multiple MySQLi objects that are opened and closed when needed. It usually works fine, but sometimes, especially when displaying multiple products, some data is truncated. For example - MicoLoans becomes MicoLoa. There was an actual spelling mistake here - now when I changed MicoLoans to MicroLoans, the same page displayed MicroLoa... So the same number of characters was truncated from the end. It is sort of consistent where it appears - for example there can be descriptions for 8 products, and description of 1 product is heavily truncated. When I add 9th product, the short description is still truncated for that same product as before. Any ideas?

• How to create a tree with filtered nodes from drupal taxonomy.

  I'm trying to create a menu tree in drupal like this: - term 1 node 1 node 2 - sub-term 1 node 3 node 4 + sub-term 2 - sub-term 3 node 5 - sub-sub-term 1 node 6 + term 2 etc. (Sub-term 2 and term 2 are toggled closed.) Some requirements: Output this using something like JQuery Menu to get an interactive tree Filter the nodes by cck type Filter the nodes by cck field Only have terms with nodes or other active terms in them show up Mark the current node as such, and automatically open the tree to that point Do I have to write this myself, or are there a combination of modules that can do it? I've got Advanced Taxonomy Blocks, which is pretty close, but it doesn't list the nodes.
