• Constructive criticism for my bounce rate being so high [closed]

  The bounce rate on my website's product pages is 80%, which is terrible. Could you offer any opinions on whether you consider the user experience to be bad, and how I could possibly improve it? Other pages, such as the home and category pages, have acceptable bounce rates, but the vast majority of my traffic lands on the product pages. I already tried removing some Google ads for a couple of days, but this didn't seem to help at all. I'm working on doing A/B testing at the moment. (It's tricky, as the site is based on a CMS - I custom coded the [Joomla] component, so hopefully I can get this testing working.)

• How to block FeedReader from fetching my content to their site?

  As you all can see from the picture below, my site's content is duplicated by FeedReader and indexed at Google. When I clicked at the FeedReader link, it uses some sort of iFrame to draw content from my site live. This forms some sort of content duplication to me, and I believe it does harm to my site. (Stackoverflow doesn't allow me to post image due to new account, pls click at the link above to see the picture, million thanks to you.) What can I do to prevent Feedreader to fetch my content to their site? I know robots.txt can perform such function, but I don't know how to do it. Any help would be much appreciated. I have also highlighted this issue to FeedReader 2 days ago, but yet to get any reply from them.

• Intermittent Copy/Paste Problem in RDP

  If you use RDP to remotely connect to your servers, you've probably encountered a clipboard issue where copy/paste stops working.  A quick Google search on the problem indicates you can easily fix the problem by logging out/logging back in or killing/restarting rdpclip.exe on the remote server.  Here's an article which covers this topic. But what do you do when copy/paste is intermittent?  It works one second, stops working for 5-30 seconds, and then on its own starts working again.  This is what’s occurring in our new non-production environment.  The DBA team is setting up 16 new physical servers and 5 new virtual machines.  I haven’t found a server where this ISN’T happening.  This intermittent copy/paste issue is driving me crazy!

• XAMPP: Deamon is already running, but it's NOT apache

  This one is giving me a headache... I have installed XAMPP for Linux 1.7.7 on Ubuntu 12.10. I haven't installed the latest version because of the new security "feature" which makes XAMPP so secure I can't get it running... But that's another story. After it installed and ran ok for a couple of months, I now get the famous "XAMPP: Another web server daemon is already running." error while starting XAMPP. Now I've googled extensively and can rule out the following: There is no other Apache installation, just XAMPP There are no apache or apache 2 services running There are no services running that use port 80 (checked with netstat -an grep -w 80) I have also done a fresh install of xampp 1.7.7, but that gives me the same result. I think I have tried every solution on the first two result-pages of google and am nowhere nearer to a solution. Can anyone give me pointers on how to find the mysterious "Webdeamon" that is already running?

  I'm having a discussion with a fellow developer, and I'm trying to argument this in something like a short "term". SoC (Separation of Concerns) is pretty straight forward design practice, but it dwells deeper. If we want to pick on it's deep corners, we can Google it and there are plenty of articles that pop up, and after taking a glimpse, we know a lot more, and might find some examples. But, what about "Use procedures that execute a single task"? That's also a great design principle to use when writing applications and it becomes more and more rewarding, the larger the application gets. Is there a term for Use procedures that execute a single task?

• Where can I find a good Hibernate Criteria tutorial that doesn't use cats and kittens? [closed]

  I've been using Hibernate a little while (HQL) and want to try Criteria's for a few scenarios we have here. I'm trying to get a few inner joins (2 layers deep) and am struggling a little. I go to the official site and they teach by cats and kittens. I don't care about cats and kittens and find the analogy hard to follow. Orders, details, shipments, etc. Nice, boring business references is what I enjoy. I tried to Google it but all I get are early 2000's websites with so many flashing GIF's, cluttered displays, flash overs and "tummy tuck" ads I want to puke. Why can't the java world have sites like http://guides.rubyonrails.org/? And no, I'm not advocating I volunteer to create a similar site. :-) Anyway, any good site that can give a nice tutorial on Criteria based searches would be appreciated.

• Does using structure data semantic LocalBusiness schema markup work for local EMD URL's?

  Based on what I have read about Google's recent Panda and Penguin updates, I'm getting the impression that using semantic markup may help improve SEO results. On a EMD (exact match domain) site, that may have been hit, we list location-based products. We are now going to be adding a itemtype="http://schema.org/Product" to each product, with relevant details. However, that product may be available in Los Angeles and also in appear in a Seattle results page. We could add a LocalBusiness item type on each geo page to define the geo location for that page. While the definition states: A particular physical business or branch of an organization. Examples of LocalBusiness include a restaurant, a particular branch of a restaurant chain, a branch of a bank, a medical practice, a club, a bowling alley, etc. We could add use the location property which would simply include the city/state details. I realize that this looks like it is meant for a physical location, however could this be done without seeming black-hat?

• Some websites are not opening. What should I do? [closed]

  Some websites are not opening in my system. I am using Ubuntu 11.04. Earlier, when I was using Ubuntu 10.01, there was no such issue. I have tried Firefox as well as Chromium and I am sure the issue is not with the browser. same websites are opening perfectly with Windows. Google, Twitter and Ubuntu related websites are running perfect. Other websites like www.downrightnow.com, easy-mantra.com are not opening. Installed Wubi on windows7 (32 bit). Ubuntu 12.10 is 64 bit. • Is it common to purchase an insurance policy for contract development work?

  I am not sure if this is the best place for the question, but I am not sure where else to ask. Background I am a contract developer and have just been asked to provide a general liability policy for my next gig. In 6-7 years this has never been asked of me. Question Is this common? If so, can anyone recommend a good underwriter that focuses on what we do as contract software developers? I realize that Google could help me find underwriters but it won't give me unbiased public opinion about which companies actually understand what we do and factor that into the price of the policy. • Run Blustacks or Android to play clash of clans on ubuntu 13.4+

  I am trying to get rid of the need to dual boot Ubuntu and windows and one thing I can do with windows I can not do with Linux is to run Bluestacks to play android games my favourite one ow is clash of clans. I have tried different VM's to run android emulators and virtual box but nothing works for clash of clans I can download the game to the VM from Google Play Store but it fails to open If Ubuntu can fix this by making a way to successfully install Bluestacks on Ubuntu or Android with Virtual box with out loading errors of all apps/games it would help the Linux community to become less dependant of Windows. • Implementation of instance testing in Java, C++, C#

  For curiosity purposes as well as understanding what they entail in a program, I'm curious as to how instance testing (instanceof/is/using dynamic_cast in c++) works. I've tried to google it (particularly for java) but the only pages that come up are tutorials on how to use the operator. How do the implementations vary across those langauges? How do they treat classes with identical signatures? Also, it's been drilled into my head that using instance testing is a mark of bad design. Why exactly is this? When is that applicable, instanceof should still be used in methods like .equals() and such right? I was also thinking of this in the context of exception handling, again particularly in Java. When you have mutliple catch statements, how does that work? Is that instance testing or is it just resolved during compilation where each thrown exception would go to?

• Republishing blog posts on a popular website

  I started my blog about programming yesterday and in order to promote and increase traffic I submitted my rss to Codeproject which pulls my posts and publishes them at Codeproject. While it increases the number of people reading my posts (but they are reading it at codeproject) I am worried that Google will penalize my site for duplicate content (Especially considering that Codeproject has much more reputation compared to my new website). The post at Codeproject has a link back to my blog post but it does not have "rel=canonical". So my question which one is better: a link from a high reputation website and some traffic or should I remove it from codeproject so that my blog is not penalized? What if codeproject adds "rel=canonical" to the link?

• Do web crawlers/spiders index azure web sites?

  For somebody who wants their web site to be as discoverable as possible (and who doesn't?), are Microsoft's Azure web sites (azurewebsites.net) a feasible domain to host sites? I have a site that is both on an azurewebsites.net and hosted under a completely different name by discountasp.net Both of these sites are exactly the same, except for the URL; whenever I update the code, I republish the site to/in both places. So obviosuly, they both have the same H1 and H2 elements. Searching for the value/content in my H1 tag, I find my .com site listed #3 on google and #2 on both Bing and Yahoo; OTOH, my azurewebsites.net site doesn't show up on the first page at all, in any of them. This makes me wonder if azurewebsites.net should only be used for Web API hosting and such-like, not for generic/commercial "public" sites. Are my conclusions valid?

• Connman not connecting to internet

  I wanted to try connman as I heard it will be replacing network manager. I kinda liked its looks and feel but the problem is I donot get connected to internet. I am using ADSL and it connects to my adsl router but doesnot ping google or any other sites. I tried to change the default gateway as well as use static ips but to no avail. It displays I am wired but doesnot open any sites or ping to any external sites except for 198.168.1.1 which is my router ip. Can anyone help ? • What's the difference between MCSD and MCPD?

  I am looking on the website but the difference between the two isn't explained. To complicate matters a Google search tells me that developers should focus on the MCPD qualifications but an examination of the MCPD section of the site is telling me that the Web Application exams will expire in July 2013! It seems out of date. Meanwhile the MCSD exam seems to be a lot more up to date with references to HTML5/ASP.net 4.5 MVC applications! What's the difference. Are the MCPD going to be updated after July? Thanks

I'm already using the usual Google Adsense, tradedoublers, ad networks, etc. What I want to know, is if anyone knows of a service/network out there (similar to tradedoubler), which allows you to accept (or bid) on campaigns (primarily CPM based).   Compiling is easy but when using java to run the programs, it gives Exception found. I am using Ubuntu 12.04 without internet connections. Also, installed Oracle JDK7 and JRE7. Also did the update-alternatives command on java, javac and javaws. Changed the machine java in /etc/profiles. PATH is pointing to oracle java folder. I did many searches on Google about this topic but each time jdk and jre version are different. Also check version of jdk and jre using java -version and javac - version. Both of them are the same. The system also contains OpenJdk6 and OpenJdk7. So, how do I remove these errors?

Currently we are listed in: www.HotFrog.com.au www.Google.com/Places www.TrueLocal.com.au www.StartLocal.com.au www.localstore.com.au www.communityguide.com.au www.yelp.com.au www.aussieweb.com.au Do you know of any method for examining account stats (profile views, profile clicks etc) within a dashboard, so I can see at a glance how each of our listings is going? I'd be happy to build a dashboard if necessary, but I'm not confident I currently have the skills to accurately display only the correct concise information. Would I use iframes? See if they have APIs? Is there a dashboard framework I could use?

• Access Control Service v2

  A Resource-STS (others call it RP-STS or federation gateway) is a necessity for non-trivial federated identity scenarios. ADFS v2 does an excellent job in fulfilling that role – but (as of now) you have to run ADFS on-premise. The Azure Access Control Service is a Resource-STS in the cloud (with all the usual scalability/availability) promises. Unfortunately a lot of (the more interesting) features in ACS v1 had to be cut due to constrained time/resources. The good news is that ACS v2 is now in CTP and brings back a lot of the missing features (like WS* support) and adds some really sweet new ones (out of the box federation with Google, Facebook, LiveID – and OpenId in general). On a related note – ACS v2 works out of the box with StarterSTS – simply choose the ADFS v2 option and point the management portal to the StarterSTS WS-Federation metadata endpoint. Have fun ;)
