• Network connection on an Acer Aspire 5253?

  Brand new to Ubuntu and PCs for that matter. I've been a Mac user all my life but wanted to try Ubuntu on the cheap so I bought an Acer laptop 5253-BZ893. I got Ubuntu 10.10 installed with no problem. The only problem I have is I have no network connection options, wired or wireless. I just get "No Network Devices Available". The computer came with Windows 7 installed and I'm able to connect to my wireless network fine using Windows so I know the computer works. I've been searching forums and google for hours trying to figure out why I can't get a network connection using Ubuntu but so far no luck. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

• CDN virtual subdomain causes duplicated content

  I have created a subdomain and a CNAME record which points to the domain root. The subdomain www.static.example.com is actually a copy of the entire website www.example.com and it is supposed to act as an CDN and serve static content in order to improve speed. However, all of my content can be accessed via subdomain aswell, so Google has indexed it all and now I am dealing with duplicated content. How could I deny access to crawlers for the subdomain baring in mind that I do not have different subfolder for subdomain, so I can't create a separate robots.txt file?

• How can i install XFCE along side unity?

  I would like to be able to install XFCE to run alongside unity so I can choose on startup which DE I use, without breaking any features of either DE. • After changing web host, I get a 'file does not exist' error

  I run a WordPress blog, and have recently changed web hosts. When changing web hosts, I copied all files and exported/imported the database etc as explained by lots of tutorials found easily on Google. The blog home page works fine. What goes wrong: When I click on any link from the home page, the browser gets stuck in a redirect loop. Looking at the error log, I see: File does not exist: /usr/local/apache/htdocs/index.php The directory /usr doesn't even exist for my website - so perhaps this is looking for a file that was present using my old Web Host and is no longer present with my new web host? What is going on, and how might I resolve it?

• Should I prevent search engines indexing tag/category pages?

  On my site, I currently have no special rules for search engines. It is a blog, statically generated using a Python program. When I search for some of my articles on Google, there is usually a tag or category page included in the results. Sometimes it even ranks ahead of the article itself. Obviously, as these links aren't always going to have the article on them, this aren't the results I want people to click on. So, I'm thinking of setting noindex on these pages. Is there any possible downside to doing so? Is this possible to do via robots.txt, or do I have to add it to all the relevant templates? All I can find for robots.txt are ways to stop the search engine crawling those pages, which isn't what I want - while I don't want them indexed, it's still the only surefire way to find all my blog posts.

  I've installed ubuntu 13.04 onto my hp 2231tx computer. During installation all of my data was erased. I didn't know all of my three partitions would be deleted. I was shocked after finding out that all of my personal data was erased. I didn't know what to do to resolve this problem so I search google for an answer. I found a program called testdisk and I used it to recover about half of my data. Among this data weren't my personal photos and videos. Is there a way to recover the other half?

  “Old” apps rely on mouse pointing and tooltips to explain what a given button is for. Maybe there is text associated with the button, but you can only put so much text without wasting useful screen state. More so in a phone or tablet app. I’ve seen a trend in Google apps where they put an overlay on top of the app the first time it runs, to explain how the various pieces of UI work. I have seen this also on my Nexus phone, but don’t have a screenshot. I don’t recall a way to actually bring that help overlay back again, so that’s maybe some built-in gesture that’s missing.   I'm currently working on my diploma project - an application for Android that uses the Augmented Reality technology. I'll have to make a presentation of my app and I can't really think of a way to show this kind of application to the crowd. Anyone has ideas? Will really appreciate an elegant solution! EDIT The application shows users the information about the places around, some kind of Layar + Google Places. So the issue is that to use the application you must turn around with your device in hands to see the icons on the screen. Presentation would have been easier if I could just lay the device on the table and use the app.

At this point apt-get hang. Does somebody know a way to fix this? Some days ago a line in source.list was removed (Google Chrome).

  Hey all, I currently work at a pretty big website that has visitors from around the globe. My job is to help out on the SEO, and one thing we've been discussing lately is the use of international TLD's. The ones we use range between: (partly) translated websites like .es and .de that serve most of the content in the country's language non-translated (english) websites for non-english languages (due to a lack of translations) like .ro and .cz english websites for english speaking countries with localized TLD's (.co.nz, .co.uk) On one hand I really have the feeling this is causing a lot of duplicate content, especially for the last two categories of TLD's. On the other hand though it seems a lot like country-specific TLD's tend to score a lot better in that country's Google. Would it be advisable to keep on using these domains, or should we canonicalize them all to the .com version?

What do we really learn in term of programming from using this kind of tool (I'm ok with python and js, but I hate C#) ?   I've been a Java (and PHP) developer for most of my life, but will need to use C for my next project. I remember some basic stuff we did back in school with fork, pthread, semaphores, etc. but I'm not sure if that's still the "way to go" here, or if there have been any recent developments/improvements etc. Google's results seem to be fairly dated. Or does that just mean that this is still the current "state of the art"? Or will I have to use a (system-independent) libary like glib if I want higher-level abstractions, like synchronized queues? What other libraries are there? (The programm will only have to run on Linux though)

  I have a game where, based upon the visible tiles in the viewport, I need to retrieve data of items in the visible tiles. I am planning to use Javascript to AJAX request in a batch based upon the visible tiles which contain image tags like Google Maps. The layer will be in SVG or canvas. The item information will be in JSON format. What is the best approach, to fetch the data? I currently have complex class I wrote in Javascript which determines the visible columns/rows and offsets relative to the visible area shown. Each item is also user contributed and will be rendered in canvas or SVG layer.

• Can I include a robots meta tag outside of the head in HTML snippets indeded to be SSIed?

  I have a number of files in my site which are not intended for independent viewing, but rather to be AJAXed into content within the site. They obviously don't meet HTML standards (no body, head, etc.) as independent entities. I would like to prevent search engines from indexing these pages, but do not have access to /robots.txt (which would be much more ideal). My question is, could I include the following at the top of these partial HTML files and get the desired results? <meta name="robots" content="noindex, noarchive"> I guess there are two parts to this question. Will this cause any rendering issues in any browsers? Will search engines (at least Google & Bing) interpret this as intended?

• Transition to new site

  I'm almost finished rewriting the website for a non-profit organization. The existing site receives ~5,000 a month. The new site is being written in ASP.Net and the existing site is PHP. The current hosting provider does not support .Net hosting, so I'll be switching providers. My question revolves around the transition from the old site to the new. I would really like to get the new site up at the new hosting provider and do thorough testing before changing the DNS records for the domain. Question: How can I put the new site up, test it, make any changes/additions necessary before updating the domain DNS to point to the new IP without Google indexing the content? Also, what SEO repercussions should I be aware of when making such a drastic change to the content that exists under the domain name?
