• Simulating Ajax failures for QA testing

  Our first ASP.Net MVC/jQuery product is about to go to QA, and we're looking for a way for our QA guys to easily be able to simulate bad Ajax requests (without modifying the application code). A typical integration/UI test plan might be: Load page, click button "DoStuff" "DoStuff" fails Attempt button "DoStuff" again "DoStuff" succeeds Verify application state This is a simple test case - there will be cases with multiple failures and successes interspersed. Aside from "unplug your network cable" I'm looking for an easy way for our guys to simulate intermittent bad server responses. I'm open to any ideas so I won't go into too many details about our application setup or dependencies. How have you handled this?

  Hello I am working on internal PHP application where users login only from our network (we are on dedicated IP and application is checking $_SERVER['REMOTE_ADDR'] and if is match our IP go thru if not - Bye However how I can identify from which station user is login ? Using cookie not gonna work - those are windows station working under control MS StedyState and all cookies are deleted every login I don't need nothing fancy like full MAC address just any unique ID (can not be application username - because users use different stations) Any ideas ? Maybe Javascript is able to grab some Unique detail from station's browser (IE 8) and pass this as hidden input? bensiu

• How can I modify keyboard shortcuts for Firefox?

  I recently started using Firefox as my primary web browser, and I would like to change some of the default keyboard shortcuts, especially the ones used to switch between tabs. Can this be done? I took a peek through the Firefox directory in "Application Support", as well as the application bundle itself, but nothing jumped out. Google searches have also proved fruitless. Any help is appreciated! Update: I'm running Firefox version 3.6 for Mac OS 10.6.2

• How to set up Django app to make cookies work on subdomain

  Hi, I have deployed my application on subdomain.domain.com (it works only on that one subdomain). Everything works fine except the fact that from time to time users cannot log in to application (the message "Looks like your browser isn't configured to accept cookies. Please enable cookies, reload this page, and try again" is shown when trying to log into admin panel). I've noticed that restarting the web server eliminates this problem for some time. Does anyone have experience with setting up django project on subdomain and can guide me how to configure my application to make it work correctly without need to ocasionally make reset?

• How to put 1000 lightweight server applications in the cloud

  The company I work for sells a commercial desktop/server app that runs on any non dedicated Windows PC or server and uses Tomcat for all interactions with the application. Customers are asking that we host their instance of the application so they don't have to run it locally on their own servers. The app is lightweight and an average server, in theory, could handle 25-50 instances before users would notice a slowdown. However only 1 instance can run per Windows instance (because the application writes to a common registry branch) so we'd need something like VMWare to create 25-50 Windows instances. We know we eventually need to reprogram to make it truly cloud-worthy but what would you recommend for a server farm or whatever for this? We don't have the setup to purchase our own servers so we must use a 3rd party. We have budgeted $500 - $1000 per year per customer for this service. Thanks in advance for your suggestions, experiences and guidance.

Any ideas? The Application code works perfecty with any query so its not application code error but prolly some "super cool feature" from ODP.NET. Already tried to_number, to_whatever and same error always happens.

• Passing ASP.NET User by Dependency Injection

  In my web application I have various components that need to access the currently authenticated user (HttpContext.User). There are two obvious ways a component can access this: 1) Accessing getting the User from HttpContext.Current 2) Passing the user around in constructors Is not ideal because it makes testing difficult and ties application components to web concerns, when they really shouldn't know about it. Is just messy and complicates everything. So I've been thinking about passing in the current user (or perhaps just the name/id) to any component that needs it using an IoC container (via dependency injection). Is anyone using this technique to supply the current ASP.NET user to parts of the application? Or, Does this sound like a sensible approach? I would like know how this has worked out for people.   I have a c#/winforms application that uses directx to play some video and audio. whenever i start my application in debugmode i get this annoying message. i can click "continue" and everything seems to work fine. but i still want to get rid of this message. it does not show up in releasemode.   Host Configuration: HP EliteBook 8530w 4G Ram Win7 Ultimate 64Bit RC SQL Server 2005 64bit Developer Edition Virtual: Windows Virtual PC 1G Ram allocated Integration Services installed Windows XP 64bit Up to date service packs and .Net framework through 3.5 SP1 Sharing the Gigabit network adapter of the Host I have a simple .Net console application which loads a dataset of approximately 37K rows. Running the application on the host executes in approximately 4 seconds. Running inside the virtual takes 729 seconds. The size of the application grows to about 65Mb when the dataset is finished loading, no calculated columns or event handlers are attached. [edit] I changed the virtual to use a loopback adapter to communicate with the host and performance is now on par with running on hardware. Any ideas as to why it would going over the network adapter be almost 200x longer? TraceRt shows that the connection is only one hop. Thanks, Shane Holder

  I'm writing a Kiosk on a Windows 7 computer. The Kiosk is on a touch screen computer, that will not have a keyboard. The application is a WPF application running the .NET Framework version 3.5. I'm having problems with the progress bar task bar showing up (blinking) at the bottom of the screen. This unfortunately gives the user access to the background operating system. Is there someway to lock a full screen application window into the front of the screen without using it on-top-of-everything mode. Some sort of Kiosk mode, or some tool that was designed for this.

  I have a asp.net web forms app that uses System.Web.Caching.Cache to cache xml data from a number of web services for 2 hours. webCacheObj.Remove(dataCacheKey) webCacheObj.Insert(dataCacheKey, dataToCache, Nothing, DateTime.Now.AddHours(2), Nothing) Every 90 minutes a Microsoft Search Server hits a particular (spider) page which calls the code to put the objects into the cache. The issue i have is that over a period of time, the memory usage of the application grows exponentially. Lets say that in a week, the memory usage of the application pool grows to over 1gb. I'm using IIS7 and no application pool recycling is currently enabled.

  Hi I tried to override HTTP request header content by using jQuery's AJAX function. Could anyone adivse me a hint that how do I or can I change the HTTP request's content-type value? thanks a lot. btw, is there any good documentation that I can study JavaScript's XMLHttpRequest's encoding handling?

  my applicationen consists of App.cs/App.xaml and some other files. Everything is compiled to an exe file. However, I want a 2. application, which should reference the first one. In this Application is a class derived from App. But when I call the the Run() function I get an very stragne error in a xaml code of the first application, saying that some image files could not be loaded. I had a similar architecture when i was using Windows Forms and it worked fine.

Based on this graphic: As it seems, it will be unnecesary to implement a service layer just for that; it will be more practical to avoid the service layer, and just go from User Interface to the Business Layer (for example). I'd like to be able to have hudson copy the application files and start a script that would run locally on our Test server. We can't use psexec because of a cross domain policy. Currently we are doing this manually, by RDPing to the Test server and checking out the code from subversion manually. • Can I get information about the IIS7 virtual directory from Application_Start?

  I have 3 IIS7 virtual directories which point to the same physical directory. Each one has a unique host headers bound to it and each one runs in its own app pool. Ultimately, 3 instances of the same ASP.NET application. In the Application_Start event handler of global.asax I would like to identify which instance of the application is running (to conditionally execute some code). Since the Request object is not available, I cannot interrogate the current URL so I would like to interrogate the binding information of the current virtual directory? Since the host header binding is unique for each site, it would allow me to identify which application instance is starting up. Does anyone know how to do this or have a better suggestion?

• Remote Desktop won't maximize

  I use a laptop and I am docking and undocking frequently. Often when I connect to another machine using remote desktop, the screen size gets messed up when I dock again. By "messed up" I mean that it stays the size of my lap top screen (wide screen ratio). Clicking maximize will not get it to go full screen. Any ideas how I can reset this (other than a reboot).
