• What frameworks are available for cross device 2d game development?

  Hi, I'm about to embark on a 2D gaming project. Initially, I'll be targeting iPhone and Facebook, but would like to expand the rollout to include Android (and possibly Windows Phone) in a future phase. Flash and Unity seem to be the most likely suspects, but is one better than the other? Are there pros/cons that may not be obvious at first glance? Are there frameworks that I have not considered? I am primarily a .NET developer, so the Unity C# integration is appealling. But I also have experience with AS3, JavaScript and Objective-C. Rich

• How do I morph between meshes that have different vertex counts?

  I am using MeshMorpher from the Unify wiki in my Unity project, and I want to be able to transform between arbitrary meshes. This utility works best when there are an equal number of vertices between the two meshes. Is there some way to equalize the vertex count between a set of meshes? I don't mean that this would reduce the vertex count of a mesh, but would rather add redundant vertices to any meshes with smaller counts. However, if there is an alternate method of handling this (other than increasing vertices), I would like to know.

  I am a beginner (a little more than that) programmer of C. I am really interested in the field of Virtual Machines. When I read about the Python VM, the PyPy project, the advancements in JVM technology, Google V8, the Erlang VM, I really get excited about these amazing pieces of technology, and really want to get my hands dirty building them or contributing to one of these projects. I need to know.. what are the things (language, concepts, algorithms, math, etc?) I need to know/learn to be able to build a virtual machine any books or other resources that will be helpful career prospects for a virtual machine engineer (but this is least important for me for now) (one more side question: somewhere I'd read something like JVM is on the cutting edge of virtual machine technology -- that it is the most advanced VM so far -- is that true?) • Game engine like Unity 3D that allow me to use .NET code

  I've been looking at Unity 3D for developing a 3D PC game and I really like the scene editor and how it simplifies the process of constructing 3D scenes, managing assets, animations, transitions etc. However, I don't want to restrict myself to using the Unity 3D scripts for handling every bit of game logic in the game. E.g. If I want to construct a RPG dialogue system I don't want to do it with unity 3d scripts - I'd like to use C#/.net. Also, I might want to use e.g. windows azure and sql azure as backend, and use 3rd party .net libraries such as reactive-extensions etc. Is there a .net engine out there that helps me with asset loading, animations, physics, transitions, etc. with a scene editor, but allow me to plug it into a visual studio .net project? • Bug Tracking Etiquette - Necromancy or Duplicate?

  I came across a really old (2+ years) feature request issue in a bug tracker for an open source project that was marked as "resolved (won't fix)" due to the lack of tools required to make the requested enhancement. In the time elapsed since that determination was made, new tools have been developed that would allow it to be resolved, and I'd like to bring that to the attention of the community for that application. However, I'm not sure as to what the generally accepted etiquette is for bug tracking in cases like this. Obviously, if the system explicitly states to not duplicate and will actively mark new items as duplicates (much in the way the SE sites do), then the answer would be to follow what the system says. But what about when the system doesn't explicitly say that, or a new user can't easily find a place that says with the system's preference is? Is it generally considered better to err on the side of duplication or necromancy? Does this differ depending on whether it's a bug or a feature request?

I have received a SOAP developer's guide to the specific type of modem that helps out with the specific values that I need to pass into Iridium's WSDL but I cannot figure out how to do this from a webpage I have created using HTML/CSS, and PHP? I have been told by others that I need to know the portal. I have no idea what that means. I am a beginner programmer who has learned programming for this project. Any suggestions as to how to pass my data into the provisioning API?

• Developing a DVR software using a hardware KIT

  I'm currently thinking about a project for my masters degree graduation. I start researching for options to make my own video streaming software based on a premade hardware kit having not much knowledge about what I'll exactly need that will match my needs. My search led me to the DVR (Digital Video Recorder) cards which seems to be the closest to what I need, but still I can't find out a few basic things so I decide to ask for them here. Currently I haven't find a lot of manufacturers that offers such kits so where I can look and have some options to choose from? There are a lot of DVR products on the market but they already have a software written for them and even if I buy one they just don't give any documentation or sdk's so buying such is not an option I need a DVR card made exactly for software programers and not end users. Are there a preferred manufacturers that provide such kind of devices with good and developer-friendly documentation? Also - I prefer to do all this with Java, is this an option (I think I will make it with .NET too but really prefer Java as a language of choice)

• How does one handle sensitive data when using Github and Heroku?

  I am not yet accustomed with the way Git works (And wonder if someone besides Linus is ;)). If you use Heroku to host you application, you need to have your code checked in a Git repo. If you work on an open-source project, you are more likely going to share this repo on Github or other Git hosts. Some things should not be checked in the public repo; database passwords, API keys, certificates, etc... But these things still need to be part of the Git repo since you use it to push your code to Heroku. How to work with this use case? Note: I know that Heroku or PHPFog can use server variables to circumvent this problem. My question is more about how to "hide" parts of the code.

• Are there existing FOSS component-based frameworks?

  The component based game programming paradigm is becoming much more popular. I was wondering, are there any projects out there that offer a reusable component framework? In any language, I guess I don't care about that. It's not for my own project, I'm just curious. Specifically I mean are there projects that include a base Entity class, a base Component class, and maybe some standard components? It would then be much easier starting a game if you didn't want to reinvent the wheel, or maybe you want a GraphicsComponent that does sprites with Direct3D, but you figure it's already been done a dozen times. A quick Googling turns up Rusher. Has anyone heard of this / does anyone use it? If there are no popular ones, then why not? Is it too difficult to make something like this reusable, and they need heavy customization? In my own implementation I found a lot of boilerplate that could be shoved into a framework.

  Initial situation Often for Visual Studio projects the typical content of a .gitignore file contains this line bin or [B|b]in It is used to avoid that Git tries to track compile outputs as repository relevant data. Problem But keep in mind: this will also suppress bin folders of additional stuff like frameworks and toolsets. For instance Microsoft.SDKs contains a folder named Bin with a lot of programs Simian contains a folder named bin with the program themselves If you store such artifacts also in the repository - according to the principle of a “self containing project” – you could lost the content in the bin folder! Solution Till yet I don’t have a good idea. So I verify for each new added toolset or framework whether it has or has not such a bin folder. If it has, then I must add this bin folder manually to the repository so that Git track it.

• Where to draw the line between front end and back end

  I was recently contracted to develop a smarty theme for an automated SOHO phone answering service. The team who had built the backend wouldn't allow me access to any of the back end nor tell me anything about it, their smarty set up, smarty plugins, data base interface api, server set-up, nothing. Nor could I have access to the server nor a beta domain, basically zero co-operation. So I set up a local server with Smarty and built the template based on what I guessed would be their best practice, commented my code like crazy, wrote all the needed javascript, css, and template files. Then I sent them packaged to the backend team and hoped for the best. With half of a project team failing to cooperate or even communicate I am now concerned that they may reply saying that everything is wrong and they may refuse to implement the new front end. I'm curious to know if others encounter this type of situation and what you may have done to protect yourselves.

• Migrating Ruby on Rails Website to New Server (Linux)

  I have an existing website that is a Ruby on Rails project. I have another server i need to transfer the existing website too. The server i wish to transfer too was originally hosting the website so has the necessary gems/configuration are installed. I have tar the current releases shared dir from the old server and transfered them over to the new server. I have then unpack the tar in the apps directory to the new location which is a different URL path. My problem is now as you can see below that the path on the current - is pointing to the old url. • If you had two projects with the same specification and only one was developed using TDD how could you tell?

  I was asked this question in an interview and it has been bugging me ever since. You have two projects, both with the same specification but only one of these projects was developed using Test Driven Development. You are given the source for both but with the tests removed from the TDD project. How can you tell which was developed using TDD? All I was able to muster up was something about the classes being more 'broken up' in to smaller chunks and having more visible APIs, not my proudest moment. I would be very interested to hear a good answer to this question.

• Methods of ordering function definitions in code

  When I work on some programming project (usually command line application in Python with many switches), I'm usually creating about 30 and more functions. Most of the functions are in one file (except some helpers that I utilize in more projects). Some of the functions are called on particular switch (like -p or --print) but many functions do some helper computations, print operations or database operations because I don't want to main functions be too large. When I have an idea for a new functionality I often put new functions randomly to the file. Should I think more about it and place it to some particular place? Are there some methods for this?

• Creating a SOLID Visual Studio Solution

  The SOLID acronym describes five object-oriented design principles that, when followed, produce code that is cleaner and more maintainable. The last principle, the Dependency Inversion Principle, suggests that details depend upon abstractions. Unfortunately, typical project relationships in .NET applications can make this principle difficult to follow. In this article, I'll describe how one can structure a set of projects in a Visual Studio solution such that DIP can be followed, allowing for the creation of a SOLID solution.
