• Naming conventions used for variables and functions in C

  While coding a large project in C I came upon a problem. If I keep on writing more code then there will be a time when it will be difficult for me to organize the code. I mean that the naming for functions and variables for different parts of the program may seem to be mixed up. So I was thinking whether there are useful naming conventions that I can use for C variables and functions? Most languages suggest a naming convention. But for C the only thing I have read so far is the names should be descriptive for code readability. EDIT: Examples of some examples of suggested naming conventions: Python's PEP 8 Java Tutorial I read some more naming conventions for java somewhere but couldn't remember where.

  SharePoint 2010 Training: more information What is a replaceable parameter? Sometimes you may see something like $SharePoint.Project.AssemblyFullName$ in your code. Visual studio is doing some magic to replace it during compile/build time with the full assembly signature. The following apply to these tokens or replaceable parameters - Tokens can be specified anywhere in a line. Tokens cannot span multiple lines. The same token may be specified multiple times on the same line and in the same file. Different tokens may be specified on the same line. Tokens that do not follow these rules are ignored without providing a warning or error. • Using EPEL repos with Oracle Linux

  There's a Fedora project called EPEL which hosts a set of additional packages that can be installed on top of various distributions such as Red Hat Enterprise Linux, CentOS, Scientific Linux and of course also Oracle Linux. These packages are not distributed by the distribution vendor and as such also not supported by the vendors (including Oracle) however for users that want to pick up some extras that are useful, it's very easy to do this. All you need to do is download the EPEL RPM from the website, install it on Oracle Linux 5 or Oracle Linux 6 and run yum install or yum search to get the packages. example : # wget http://download.fedoraproject.org/pub/epel/6/i386/epel-release-6-5.noarch.rpm # rpm -ivh epel-release-6-5.noarch.rpm # yum repolist Loaded plugins: refresh-packagekit, rhnplugin repo id repo name status epel Extra Packages for Enterprise Linux 6 - x86_64 7,124 The folks that build these repositories are doing a great job at adding very useful packages. Register patent, don't like it, but anyway would like to ask: how long it takes to do all this stuff and how much it will cost in average? If to forget about patents, will the idea have something like "prior art" status or some such if someone will try to patent this in future? • Java dev learning Python: what concepts do I need to wrap my head around?

  I've run through a few tutorials and written some small projects. I'm right in the middle of a small project now infact. All is going well enough thanks in no small part to Uncle Google (who usually points me to Stackoverflow ;-) Several times in the last few days I've found myself wondering "what am I missing?" - I feel that I'm still thinking in Java as I write in Python. This question over at StackOverflow is full of tips about what resources to read up on for learning Python, but I still feel that I'm a Java dev with a dictionary (pun unintended) to translate into Python. What I really want to do is refactor my head to be able to write Pythonic Python instead of Java disguised as Python (not that I want to loose my Java skills). So, the crux of my question is: what concepts does a Java dev really need to learn to think Pythonic? This includes anything that needs to be un-learnt. ps: I consider language syntax to not be particularly relevant to this question.

• OpenSource license with commerial-use exemptions for the owner

  I'm looking for an open source license which grants me additional privileges. Features: Anyone can freely modify, fork, use the code, as long as they make their source changes publicly available. They can use it in other open source projects, but not in closed-source projects. Only I and entities I specifically designate can use the code as part of a closed-source application. I am also exempt from the duty to publish the source code changes. I'm not trying to forbid the commercial use, just to allow myself more flexibility to use the code, while still contributing to open source. I don't want to burn myself by being legally forbidden from using the libraries I wrote in my commercial projects. Large companies use such dual licenses to maintain an open source project, while also selling the premium version. Which licenses of this type are available? What caveats or obstacles exist?

• Best free wireframe software for websites

  Working on a non-profit project and wondering if there's a standout wireframing tool for website design. I've taken photos of collaborative whiteboard drawings and now I want to put the results into something slightly more professional looking for review. For obvious reasons I'm not interested in anything that looks too much like the finished product or takes longer than it would for me to write the HTML. I checked out jumpchart, but that only seems to let you do content panes, not draw whole page layouts. Free or close to free is desirable - for instance jumpchart licensing seems very reasonable.

• Where can I find accessible bug/issue databases with complete revision history

  I'm performing some research and analysis on bug/issue tracking databases and more specifically on how programmers and teams of programmers actually interact with them. What I'm looking for involves understanding how those databases change over time. So what I don't need for example: is a database of all the bugs of some open source project as the bugs exist today. What I do need is a complete set of revision history for every issue/bug in the database. This would enable me to pick a specific datetime and say here were the list of all the issues/bugs that existed at that moment in time. Anyway know of some publicly accessible issue/bug databases that expose this revision data? • Which programming career path fits my terms? [closed]

  I am sick and tired of my enterprise development job, I need some programming direction like this: Demanded in jobs-market Demanded in freelance market Can use Ubuntu as development environment Not enterprise. Standalone, mobile, web-development, anything, just not enterprise. Basically, I need a programming direction which doesn't need 20 developers, terribly big databases systems and long going projects with intense long-term support, I don't want enterprise job where a lot of people are working on one terribly big project and do modules to it all day long. Instead, I need something where: Projects change pretty often Projects are little, or medium-sized (in terms of code, modules and people working on it) but still not enterprise-sized Possible for freelance, solo-development, or at least requires a team of 3-4 programmers. Not like in enterprise where you feel like a drop in the sea with your 50 classes while system itself has hundreds of classes. Suggestions please?

• MPL with Commercial Use Restrictions (And Other Questions)

  So basicly I want to use MPL 2.0 for my open source software but I also want to forbid commercial use. I'm not a legal expert, that's why I'm asking. Should I use dual-license (MPL + Modified BSD License)? Or what does sublicensing mean? If I wanted to license my project, I would include a notice to the header. What should I do if want to dual-license or sublicense? Also, is it OK to use nicknames as copyright owners? I am not able to distribute additional files (e.g LICENSE.txt, README.md etc) with the software simply because it is just a JS script. By open-source I mean not obfuscated JS code. So in this case, am I forced to use GPL to make redistribution of obfuscated work illegal? Thanks for reading, any help is appreciated, answering all of the questions is not essential.

• Exporting an animated FBX to XNA? (in 3DS Max)

  I'm now working on an XNA 3D game, and I want to add animated models in it. I came across this example. I see there is one FBX file and a few texture files in the content project, and that in the code you can choose which "take" to play. In this code it is "Take_001". Please tell me: When I create and animate my own 3D model in 3DS Max (2012, since I was told it's only possible in this version), how can I define those takes? plus, are any configurations need to be made when exporting FBX from 3DS Max to XNA?   I'm looking to develop a simple image editor wherein a user can cycle through multiple layers (6-10) of images to develop a unique avatar. For example, the initial image layer will be a 2D character of their choice, mostly void of any accessories. The next image layer would be a shirt, another pants, another jewelry etc. I like the idea of frontend HTML5 so it can be a web app compatible across most platforms, but I'm lost on the backend requirements of such a project. #noob Any help would be greatly appreciated.

• Recommended solutions for integrating iOS with .NET, at the service tier

  I'm developing an application, in iOS, that is required to connect to my Windows Server to poll for new data, update, etc. As a seasoned C# developer, my first instinct is to start a new project in Visual Studio and select Web Service, letting my bias (and comfort level) dictate the service layer of my application. However, I don't want to be biased, and I don't base my decision on a service which I am very familiar with, at the cost of performance. I would like to know what other developers have had success using, and if there is a default standard for iOS service layer development? Are there protocols that are easier to consume than others within iOS? Better ones for the size and/or compression of data? Is there anything wrong with using SOAP? I know it's "big" in comparison to protocols like JSON.

• Track those visitors who come through a particular link

  I want to track visitors who come to my site through a particular link. For example, those visitors coming from http://www.domain.com/abc123, I can get their pageviews, time on site, bounce rate, referrer pages per visit etc. After that I can store that info into by database on daily basis. Can anyone suggest any service or api or any software for the same? I have used Google Analytics utm tags that work straight well for my requirement but I don't know how many links I can track with it. I have around 80-100 links to track a day and the number of links will be increasing. I couldn't find any documentation regarding limit of campaigns in GA. If there's no such limit, I can start this project. Thanks

• How does one handle sensitive data when using Github and Heroku?

  I am not yet accustomed with the way Git works (And wonder if someone besides Linus is ;)). If you use Heroku to host you application, you need to have your code checked in a Git repo. If you work on an open-source project, you are more likely going to share this repo on Github or other Git hosts. Some things should not be checked in the public repo; database passwords, API keys, certificates, etc... But these things still need to be part of the Git repo since you use it to push your code to Heroku. How to work with this use case? Note: I know that Heroku or PHPFog can use server variables to circumvent this problem. My question is more about how to "hide" parts of the code.

• Keep getting messages about internal system errors

  I keep getting popups about internal system errors (see screenshot below) on irregular intervals (several times a day), that I don't know what to do about. If I continue through the dialog and try to report the error back to the Ubuntu project, I get a message stating that development on this version of Ubuntu has been completed, and that I should ask for help here if I don't know what to do about it. I don't. If I show the details of the error message, the "executable path" parameter shows /usr/share/apport/apport-gpu-error-intel.py. Is this a bug I should report to Launchpad, or just a configuration error somewhere? If it's a bug, how do I collect the data I (and the devs) need? Update in response to comment: I am running an ASUS N53SN, sporting an Intel Core i7 2630QM CPU and an NVidia GeForce 550M GPU.

  I am a beginner (a little more than that) programmer of C. I am really interested in the field of Virtual Machines. When I read about the Python VM, the PyPy project, the advancements in JVM technology, Google V8, the Erlang VM, I really get excited about these amazing pieces of technology, and really want to get my hands dirty building them or contributing to one of these projects. I need to know.. what are the things (language, concepts, algorithms, math, etc?) I need to know/learn to be able to build a virtual machine any books or other resources that will be helpful career prospects for a virtual machine engineer (but this is least important for me for now) (one more side question: somewhere I'd read something like JVM is on the cutting edge of virtual machine technology -- that it is the most advanced VM so far -- is that true?) Please give me a LONG answer detailing all that you know.

• Windows 7 Virtual PC - &ldquo;RPC server unavailable&rdquo;

  I use Windows 7 Virtual PC on my current project and I often bring home the files, so I can work some in the evenings.  Since my VHDs are large, I’ll only copy the undo disks, saved state, and virtual machine config files from my external drive.  I copy them to a small portable drive and once I get home, I’ll copy them to a large external drive. I’ve done this for over a year, but recently I started getting an error when I tried to start the VPC after the copying was finished.  It would open the initial window with the progress bar, but eventually the bar would stop, turn red, and then the error “RPC server unavailable” would appear.  When I first started seeing these, I’d try again, but no luck. After some testing, it turns out that my small portable drive is apparently going bad, so it was corrupting the files.  Lucky for me, that I never overwrote my good copies with corrupted copies, at least not at both the office and at home.

• Bug once in a while,but high priority

  I am working on a CNC (computer numerical control) project which cuts shapes into metal with help of laser. Now my problem is once in a while (1-2 times in 20 odd days) the cutting goes wrong or not according to what is set. But this causes loss so the client is not very happy about it. I tried to find out the the cause of it by Including log files Debugging Repeating the same environment. But it wont repeat. A pause and continue operation will again make it to run smoothly with the bug reappearing. How do I tackle this issue? Should I state it as a Hardware Problem?

• Implementing a FSM with ActionScript 2 without using classes?

  I have seen several references of A.I. and FSM, but sadly I still can't understand the point of an FSM in AS2.0. Is it a must to create a class for each state? I have a game-project which also it has an A.I., the A.I. has 3 states: distanceCheck, ChaseTarget, and Hit the target. It's an FPS game and played via mouse. I have created the A.I. successfully, but I want to convert it to FSM method... My first state is CheckDistanceState() and in that function I look for the nearest target and trigger the function ChaseState(), there I insert the Hit() function to destroy the enemy, The 3 functions that I created are being called in AI_cursor.onEnterframe. Is there any chance to implement an FSM without the need to create a class? From what I've read before, you have to create a class. I prefer to write the code on frames in flash and I still don't understand how to have external classes.
