  Next week I will be in Brussels attending a policy dialog held at the European Policy Centre on Thursday October 11th. It is titled "The Accessibility Act – ensuring access to goods and services across the EU", and I will be part of a distinguished panel exploring some of the issues the upcoming European Accessibility Act may address - with a particular emphasis in my case on the role of ICT accessibility. This morning policy dialog will be followed by a more focused workshop in the afternoon looking at specific challenges and potential solutions to those challenges. Oracle is sponsoring this policy dialog and workshop, alongside the European Disability Forum. If you are in Brussels, you are invited to attend. Registration by e-mail is now open.

• Getting Started Quickly

  If you're interested in using Ops Center, you'll want to get up and running as quickly and effectively as possible. One way to do this would be to work your way through the documentation library - use the Linux or Oracle Solaris install guides, then go through the Feature Guide and Admin Guide to start using the software. They're thorough, but they're a lot of reading. But if you're looking to install a simple deployment quickly, and you don't want to do all of the configuration work right off the bat, you can use the Quick Start Guide. It's a streamlined procedure that runs you through installing a single Enterprise Controller and co-located Proxy Controller, and then shows you how to discover assets quickly. Once you've discovered these assets, it describes how to use the analytics feature to view their performance, and use monitoring to keep track of their statuses and health. You'll have to do some additional configuration to use features like OS provisioning, OS updates, and virtualization, but the Quick Start guide gives you an overview of how to install and start using features quickly.

• Where can I find SPF record information for Network Solution hosted email?

  I have a client who has their e-mail hosted with Network Solutions and some of the e-mails they are sending are going to spam. I've searched Google for information on network solutions and SPF records but all the results have to do with "how to set up an SPF record" - which I understand how to do. The problem is that I can't find any information about what SPF records to use for network solutions hosted e-mail. I even tried lookup up spf records on networksolutions.com but it appears there are none. Where can I find SPF record information for Network Solution hosted email?

• New code release today - 2011.1.4.2

  Wow, two blog entries in the same day! When I wrote the large 'Quota' blog entry below, I did not realize there would be a micro-code update going out the same evening. So here it is. Code 2011.1.4.2 has just been released. You can get the readme file for it here: https://wikis.oracle.com/display/FishWorks/ak-2011.04.24.4.2+Release+Notes Download it, of course, through the MOS website. It looks like it fixes a pretty nasty bug. Get it if you think it applies to you. Unless you have a great reason NOT to upgrade, I would strongly advise you to upgrade to 2011.1.4.2. Why? Because the readme file says they STRONGLY RECOMMEND YOU ALL UPGRADE TO THIS CODE IMMEDIATELY using LOTS OF CAPITAL LETTERS. That's good enough for me. Be sure to run the health check like the readme tells you to.

• Plugins in Ops Center and Cloud Control

  Cloud Control just released an updated plugin for Oracle Virtual Networking, so I thought I'd mention a bit about how both Ops Center and Cloud Control use plugins. On the Ops Center side, we have a plugin to connect Ops Center to Cloud Control, letting them share monitoring data. This guide explains how to install and use that plugin. In Cloud Control, they have a more extensive collection of plugins, letting you link Cloud Control with a variety of other products. The Cloud Control library plug-in tab goes into more detail about how you can use these plugins in your environment.

• How to Get Vim to do Filename Completion Even When You are Root

  From the Obscure Unix Admin Tip of the Day section... If you occasionally edit files as root (I never do, I always use pfexec, wink wink), then you may have noticed that the vim (Vi Improved) editor that normally does filename completion via the <Tab> key now gives you something like: :e /etc/mo^I when you try to open up /etc/motd with a little less typing So, there are at least three solutions to this: Use <Ctrl>-E instead of <Tab> Use the "-N" flag when you start Vim :set wildchar=<Tab> (Enter those 5 characters, not an actual Tab) The reason for this? It seems that when you are root, Vim sets it's "compatible" flag, which makes it behave more like its ancestor vi. In turn this makes Vim set 'wildchar' to <Ctrl>-E. • Global Adopt a JSR Program Update

  Eclipse Kepler (4.3) features 71 different open source projects and over 58 million LOC. One of the main themes of the release is the support for Java EE 7. Kepler specifically added support for the features mentioned below: Create Java EE 7 Eclipse projects or using Maven New facets for JPA 2.1, JSF 2.2, Servlet 3.1, JAX-RS 2.0, EJB 3.2 Schemas and descriptors updated for Java EE 7 standards (web.xml, application.xml, ejb-jar.xml, etc) Tolerance for JPA 2.1 such as features can be used without causing invalidation and content assist for UI (JPA 2.1) Support for NamedStoredProcedureQuery (JPA 2.1) Schema generation configuration in persistence.xml (JPA 2.1) Updates to persistence.xml editor with the new JPA 2.1 properties Existing features support EE7 (Web Page Editor, Palette, EL content assist, annotations, JSF tags, Facelets, etc) Code generation wizards tolerant of EE7 (New EJB, Servlet, JSP, etc.) A comprehensive list of features added in this release is available in Web Tools Platform 3.5 - New and Noteworthy. Where people were looking for a specific command or set of steps to fix a problem they had encountered.
