• How can you logically group HTML elements without taking the help of CSS classes ?

  I know that in jQuery you can use something like $(".cssClass") to get all elements with this class. However in plain html and javascript how do you group elements logically? • A consistent and simple group of IDE and tools for embedded code and unit test in C++ ?

  I’m starting a new firmware project in C++ for Texas Instrument C283xx and C6xxx targets. The unit tests will not run on the target, but will be compiled with gcc/gcov on a PC with windows (and run as well on PC) with simple metrics for tested code coverage. The whole project will be part of Cruise Control.NET for continuous integrations. My question is: what are the consistent IDE / framework / tools to work together? A/ One of the developers says CodeComposerStudio V3.1 for application and CodeBlocks + CxxUnit for the Unit tests. B/ I’m more attracted with CodeComposerStudio V4 for application, Eclipse CDT (well, as CCS V4) and CppUnit for unit test + MockCpp for mocks. I don’t want the best in class tools for each process, but a global, consistent and easy solution (or group of tools if you prefer).

I've gone through the some blogs and wondered like we should not make use of hibernateTemplate becoz coupling your application tightly to the spring framework. For this reason, Spring recommends that HibernateTemplate no longer be used.Further more my requirement is changed to Spring Hibernate with AOP using Declarative Transaction management.I am new to AOP concepts. • Why AutoResetEvent and ManualResetEvent does not support name in the constructor?

  On .NET Framework 2.0 AutoResetEvent and ManualResetEvent inherit from EventWaitHandle. The EventWaitHandle class has 4 different constructors. 3 of the constructors support giving a name to the event. On the other hand both ManualResetEvent and AutoResetEvent do not support naming and provide a single constructor that receives the initialState. I can simply inherit from EventWaitHandle and write my own implementation of those classes that support all the constructor overloads, but I don't like to re-invent the wheel if I do not have to. My questions are: Is there a special problem in naming events? Do you have any idea why Microsoft did not support it? An application means: 1 Where there is connection (online mode) between the browser and an remote application server: the application runs in typical web-based mode the application stores necessary data in offline storage, to be used in offline mode (2) the application sync/push data (captured during offline mode) back to the server when it is resumed from offline mode back to online mode 2 Where there is no connection (offline mode) between the browser and an remote application server: the application will still run (javascript?) the application will present data (which is stored offline) to user the application can accept input from user (and store/append in offline storage) Is this possible?   Over the last few years F# has evolved into one of Microsoft's fully supported languages employing many ideas incubated in OCaml, ML and Haskell. Over the last several years C# has extended it's general purpose features by introducing more and more functional language features: LINQ (list comprehension), Lamdas, Closures, Anonymous Delegates and more... Given C#'s adoption of these functional features and F#'s taxonomy as an impure functional language (it allows YOU to access framework libraries or change shared state when a function is called if you want to) there is a strong similarity between the two languages although each has it's own polar opposite primary emphasis. I'm interested in any successful models employing these two languages in your production polyglot programs and also the areas within production software (web apps, client apps, server apps) you have written in F# in the past year or so that you would previously have written in C#.   As stated in the framework design guidelines and the WWW in general, the current guideline is to name your constants like this LastTemplateIndex as opposed to LAST_TEMPLATE_INDEX With the PascalCasing approach, how do you differentiate between a Property and a Constant. ErrorCodes.ServerDown is fine. But what about private constants within your class ? I use quite a lot of them for naming magic numbers.. or for expected values in my unit tests and so on. The ALL_CAPS style helps me know that it is a constant . _testApp.SelectTemplate(LAST_TEMPLATE_INDEX); *Disclosure: I have been using the SCREAMING_CAPS style for a while for constants + I find it more readable than squishedTogetherPascalCasedName.   Asp.Net allows you you set the session state to readonly at individual page level or in the web.config for all pages. But it doesn't prevent you from creating a brand new session variable on that page or modify an existing session variable. But when you try to use that session variable it is either not available or its value is not modified. Why wouldn't the asp.net framework throw a run time error, if not compile time error, when a write attempt is made to a session on the pages where that is not allowed?

  I have clr stored procedure that calls a Webservice method. Webmethod in turn call a com object .. and do some processing on a remote Unix server. When I invoke webmethod by it self it works fine. But when called from the CLR I get the following exception.. What am I doing wrong ? • MVC without ORM is not real MVC?

  at the moment im integrating ORM (doctrine) into a MVC framework (codeigniter). then it hit me that this was the obvious way of setting up a MVC: the controller calls the models that are representing database tables. look at this picture: MVC + ORM then i wondered, how can a MVC without ORM be real MVC? cause then the models are not real objects, rather aggregations of different functions that perform CRUD, then returning the result to the controller. and there is no need for a state (object properties) i guess so the functions would be all static? correct me if im wrong on this one. i guess a lot of people are using models without ORM. please share your thoughts. how do your models look like?

  I don't have a lot of experience with Jboss AOP and I'm just curious if it's possible to replace all calls like Field f = foo.class.getDeclaredField("bar"); f.set(object, value); with something like Field f = foo.class.getDeclaredField("bar"); FieldSetCaller.invoke(f, object, value); using Jboss AOP. FieldSetCaller is my own class. I need to replace all Field.set calls on the fly, without recompiling the code. Some third -party code I even cannot recompile because I don't have the source. I can achieve this using java asm framework and I'm wandering if Jboss AOP can do it as well. Just for information - my code is running on Jboss server 4.3.0

• If I already know Perl Is Python worth learning?

  I'm all for learning and continual improving one’s self, and I believe you should have as many tools as possible in your toolbox. However, I was wondering if it was worth it learning Python, since I already know a couple of dynamic interpreted languages, including Perl. My background is mostly C/C++/Java/C#, but I’ve programmed in Perl quite a bit over the years. I recently read Dive Into Python, as well as the tutorial for the Django framework for a new project where Python was suggested. However, I kept finding myself thinking that I can still accomplish much of the same stuff with Perl, so I’m not sure when I would choose a Python approach over one that I’m already familiar with. This is by no means meant to start any kind of language war, and I do recognize that language choice is quite subjective. I just wondering when one would make such a choice.

• What can cause a persistent "Reload the page to get source for" error in firebug?

  I'm trying to debug the javascript of a specific page, and I keep seeing Reload the page to get source for page.htm in Firebug. On Chrome, I'm mostly able to debug the js, but sometimes I also get a blank page. What can cause such issues? I believe I always see a blank page in Chrome if I reload while the JS console is open. If I open a new Chrome tab, load the page, and then open the JS console, everything is ok. The page I'm debugging is on a localhost server (Play Framework server), although I have seen this on other pages occasionally. This only happens with inline javascript ... js that is linked from the page is displayed fine.

  I need to import jpeg images into a WP7/XNA app with associated metadata. The program which manages these images exports to an XML file with an encoded byte[] of the jpg files. I've written a custom importer/processor which successfully imports the reserialized objects into my XNA project. • How can I receive messages using C# over http without MSMQ

  I need a reliable messaging framework that runs over http/https (due to client security requirements) and that doesn't use MSMQ (because some clients will use Windows XP Home). The clients only need to be able to receive messages, not send them. We already have a message queue on the server for each user, and the receivers have been getting messages by connecting to an HttpHandler on the server and getting a Stream from WebResponse.GetResponseStream() We keep this stream open, and pull messages off of it using Stream.Read(). This MOSTLY works, but Stream.Read() is a blocking call, and we can't reliably interrupt it. We need to be able to stop and start the receiver without losing messages, but the old stream often hangs around, even after we call Thread.Abort on its thread. Any suggestions?

• Running .NET app from network share in Win 7?

  We have a .NET 1.1 application that we keep on a netowork share. We install the .NET Framerwork to the local PCs and also set the full trust via the following: %windir%\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v1.1.4322\caspol -pp off -cg LocalIntranet_Zone FullTrust This has worked fine on all PCs to date however now we have a few new PCs with Win7 and the process no longer is working. The app will run fine from a local drive in Win7 but running the networked copy results in a general exception error. Any ideas on how to get this to work under Win7?

• Have you switched from CodeIgniter to Kohana?

  Hi All, I usually just work with straight PHP, but want to try MVC and see if a framework will really speed up development. After much waffling, analysis paralysis, and many dumb SO questions, I thought I had settled on CodeIgniter for my next PHP project. However, I am now seriously considering Kohana. Has anyone made the switch from CI to Kohana? If so, why? What's better about the actual code, libraries, etc? Edit: Hi All, I did end up going with Kohana. It's easy to use, but more importantly, it's easy NOT to use, since there are a lot of things I like to work with native PHP for. It's ridiculously extensible, well coded, and seems like it is beginning to pull out ahead of CI in a few things like putting views in views, passing subview data, etc. I am sure CI will catch up, but Kohana should be 3 steps ahead by then =o)

  Hello, I want to develop using a framework called symfony BUT, i do not have a MAC and i don't want to dual boot with Debian. I tryed virtual hosts via Virtual Box but it's too crappy. So i decided to stay on windows So when the tutorial tells me to do php lib/vendor/symfony/data/bin/check_configuration.php i do in the windows cmd : php lib\vendor\symfony\data\bin\check_configuration.php and it tells me : 'php' is not recognized as an internal or external command I use UwAmp (php 5.2.12 + mysql + apache) which is stored in E:\logiciels\UwAmp\ inside i have buch of file, but i guess that is important : E:\logiciels\UwAmp\apache\php_5.2.11 How to make the cmd PHP in the windows cmd work propely please?

• When to use Version Control?

  I am a lone developer, developing Web Sites/Apps in PHP. I dont work with anybody, I use a framework so I dont create libraries for my apps (most of the time). I have read a lot about Version Control and its benefits, but I dont understand how it would benefit somebody like me. The biggest benefit I can see it having is that if I posted the code on a remote server I could work from anywhere on any computer, but I carry my laptop like I carry my phone so again I dont see much of a reason there. Can somebody please explain to me in a simple manner the reasons for going with a VCS, and give me some good free ones I should try? Are there any hidden benefits/scenarios that you can think of that may sway me in any direction one way or the other. Thanks

  Pardon the vague question, but I've just inherited a project to build a couple dozen forms pulling data from a SQL 2005 database. The forms are mostly standard database lookups with just a couple updates so the data layer is very simple -- I'm the DBA -- but we just recently started using SharePoint WSS 3.0 for a departmental web site and I would prefer to integrate these forms into WSS rather than build a separate standalone ASP.NET app. I'm hoping there is some RAD framework out there that integrates with WSS for data bound forms. I've been searching online, but haven't found anything very promising and the data viewer web part in SharePoint Designer looks complicated to integrate with an external SQL database. TIA, Rusty

• Django 1.2 crash course needed

  I know Python but I've never used Django. What do I need to know about Django 1.2 to port my typical PHP CRUD web application in one weekend? (Yes I've read Joel Spolsky's Netscape article :-)) I'm reading this tutorial right now and it's excellent. I'm already playing around with inspectdb to generate my models from the existing schema. I'm planning to use the following features of Django this weekend: Fragment caching Static asset versioning (for far future expires) Schema migrations (or whatever they're called in Django) Auto-admin (and customize it later) The test framework ...other stuff I probably don't know about yet I'm familiar with all these concepts in other languages/frameworks, except for the ORM which I've never used. I know SQL pretty well though. Any links, sage bits of advice, gotchas, stuff not mentioned in the (excellent) tutorial/docs, or stuff that is mentioned but warrants repeating == very welcome.   Hello, I have to write a javascript function that is returning the current size (in px) of a div. Unfortunately the div has its weight specified in % instead of px. The style of the div: position: absolute; width: 100%; height: 100%; And my width returning function: function getTableWidth(tableId){ var tabWidth = document.getElementById('pt1::tabb').children[0].children[0].style.width; return tabWidth; } tabWidth is '100%'. Is it possible to return the px width instead of the % width ? NOTE: I don't have access to any html/css , as the page I am working on is generated through a complex framework. • what's the "best" approach to creating the UI of an audio plugin that will be both audio unit and VST for OS X and Windows?

  I'm working on a couple audio plugins. Right now, they are audio units. And while the "DSP" code won't change for the most part between implementations / ports, I'm not sure how to go about the GUI. For instance, I was looking at the Apple-supplied AUs in Lion. Does anyone know how did they go about the UI? Like, are the knobs and controls just subclasses of Cocoa controls? are they using some separate framework or coding these knobs and such from scratch? And then, the plugs I'm working on are going to be available too as VSTs for Windows. I already have them up and running with generic interfaces. But I'm wondering if I should just get over it and recreate all my interfaces with the vstgui code provided by Steinberg or if there's a more practical approach to making the interfaces cross-platform.
