• How to learn flex?

  So I'm starting an internship as a Flex developer in ~2weeks thanks to a friend of mine. The thing is I know squat about Flex - it is an internship after all so I'm supposed to learn there, but nonetheless I want to have some basic understanding of Flex before I start (eventually I want to become a JEE/Flex dev). So my question is simple, which book(s) would you recommend me to start with? Are there any "must have" books, like let's say "Thinking in C++" for C++ etc.? I already heard about a few video tutorials and I will surely check them out but I'd also want to get some decent books.

• Possible to link an image in a playlist to a URL, with Flowplayer?

  I have a simple Flowplayer playlist. First one plays a short clip, which then cuts off, and an image is displayed. • Definitive best practice for injecting, manipulating AJAX data

  Ever since my foray into AJAX, I've always used the "whatever works" method of manipulating AJAX data returns. I'd like to know what the definitive and modern best practice is for handling data. Is it best practice to generate the HTML via the server script and introduce the returned data on the onComplete function? Should XML/JSON be looked at first before anything? How about manipulating the returned data? Using .live() doesn't seem like it is the most efficient way. I've never seen a definitive answer to this question. Your expertise is much appreciated.

• All partitions missing when copying

  I bought a new 320GB SATA hard drive few months ago no recently when i try to copy something to the drive after about 20 seconds the all the partitions in the hard drive suddenly disappears. The hard drive is not shown in either Disk manager or device manager. To get the HD work i have to restart the PC again.The same thing happens when i try to copy. Even when i play any audio or video after abt 5 minutes i get the same problem. The drives are NTFS and im running Windows XP.. Xan some one please help me solve the problem??

• Relative paths in spring classpath resource

  Hi all, I have a bunch of spring config files, all of which live under the META-INF directory in various subpackages. I have been using import like the following... <import resource="../database/schema.xml"/> So a relative path from the source file. This works fine when I am working with a local build outside of a jar file. But when I package everything up in a jar then I get an error that it cannot resolve the URL resource. If I change the above to an absolute path (with classpath:) then it works fine. Is there any way to use relative paths with ".." in when the configs are packaged in a jar or am I restricted to descending relative paths and absolute paths only? Thanks.

• Replicating MySQL DB to development machine - bad idea?

  I am considering replicating a production MySQL database to my development machine so I've always got current data. The production database is externally hosted. My development machine is behind an unreliable internet connection. It is entirely possible that the development machine could be disconnected from the internet for extended periods of time (hours). Would there be any adverse effect on the production database by doing this? (I don't strictly need live data - but it would be nice, and good excuse to dabble with replication. If the consensus is that this is a bad idea, I'll set up a daily job to import the previous night's backup into my development database)

• Run Exchange Management Shell cmdlets from Visual Basic/C#/.NET app

  Goal: Provide a web service using Visual Basic or C# or .NET that interacts with the Exchange Management Shell, sending it commands to run cmdlets, and return the results as XML. (Note that we could use any lanaguage to write the service, but since it is a Windows Box and we have Visual Studio 2008, it seemed like easiest solution would be just use it to create a VB/.NET web service. Indeed, it was quite easy to do so, just point and click.) Problem: How to run an Exchange Management Shell cmdlet from the web service, e.g, Get-DistributionGroupMember "Live Presidents" Seems that we should be able to create a PowerShell script that runs the cmdlet, and be able to call that from the command line, and thus just call it from within the program. Does this sound correct? If so how would I go about this? Thanks. Answer can be language agnostic, but Visual Basic would probably be best since that is what I loaded the test web service up in.

  Hello, I'm learning JQuery and am about to write some pages using intensively that library. I just learned that some user disable javascript on their browser (I didn't even know that was possible and/or necessary). Now, here's my question: What happens to my web application if a user disable Javascript? For instance, I'd like to display some screens using Ajax and commands such as 'InsertBefore' to bring in live a DIV that will display the result. So, if Javascript is disabled, I wonder what going to happen to all this work that relies on Javascript? I'm kind of lost. Thanks for helping

• Easily switching ConnectionStrings on publish to Azure

  I'm currently building an Azure Web Role. I am testing this project against a local database server on localhost. Then, when confident that the project is working, I publish it to Staging on Windows Azure. However, I also have to remember to change the connection string to point to the live SQL server on SQL Azure before deploying, and then change it back to localhost afterwards. Is there any nice way to automate this, or perhaps a different process to take to avoid the issue altogether? For example is there a way to have a configuration file for Azure that isn't updated with every deploy?

• WPF/MVVM - should we create a different Class for each ViewModel ?

  I'm attempting the example from the excellent "How Do I" video for MVVM by Todd Miranda found in MSDN. I'm trying to adapt the example for my learning purpose. In the example, he has a ViewModel called EmployeeListViewModel. Now if I want to include Departments, should I create another ViewModel such as DepartmentListViewModel? The example has EmployeeRepository as the Data Source. In my case, I'm trying to use an Entity object as the datasource (Employees.edmx in Model folder and EmployeeRepository.cs in DataAccess folder). If I want to display the list of Departments, should I create a separate class called DepartmentRepository and put all department related method definitions there? What if I want to retrieve the employee name and their department's name together? Where should I place the methods for this? I'm very new to WPF and MVVM and please let me know if any of the above needs to be re-phrased. Thank you for all the help.

• how can I develop Apple Java Extensions on Windows?

  When I do multi-platform testing on Windows it gets annoying that Eclipse shows errors in the project because of the com.apple.eawt code that I have in a special Mac customization task. Worse yet, if I export a runnable jar on Windows, it won't run on mac because of the unresolved compilation problems. What's the best way to let Windows Java and com.apple.eawt live in peace? I can't see how I would be able to spin off the code to a jar, since it requires access to lots of the program's state. Thanks for your help! • Security precautions and techniques for a User-submitted Code Demo Area

  Hey folks Maybe this isn't really feasible. But basically, I've been developing a snippet-sharing website and I would like it to have a 'live demo area'. For example, you're browsing some snippets and click the Demo button. A new window pops up which executes the web code. I understand there are a gazillion security risks involved in doing this - XSS, tags, nasty malware/drive by downloads, pr0n, etc. etc. etc. The community would be able to flag submissions that are blatantly naughty but obviously some would go undetected (and, in many cases, someone would have to fall victim to discover whatever nasty thing was submitted). So I need to know: What should I do - security wise - to make sure that users can submit code, but that nothing malicious can be run - or executed offsite, etc? For your information my site is powered by PHP using CodeIgniter. Jack

The problem we're left with is the following: the flash API is streaming the content of the video to a webpage, this page saves the photo as a jpg.   I have a set of aspx pages that each live in their own directory and reference a single aspx.cs code behind file. This has worked fine previously because I never tried to pre-compile the site. IIS must have individually compiled each aspx, linking them to the contents of App_Code but never referencing more than one aspx at a time. Now that I'm trying to pre-compile the website using Web Deployment Projects I keep getting errors about the same class being found in multiple assemblies. I can't just drop the aspx.cs in App_Code and subclass it because it wouldn't be able to find the controls on the .aspx pages when compiling. Maybe I could explicitly define every control on the page in the .cs? But would that allow them to be wired up correctly? Any other ideas on how I can reference the same Page class from multiple .aspx pages and be able to pre-compile the entire website?

  Hi, I'm looking for a user interface for a MediaPlayer which should be able to play video as well as audio files. Furthermore it needs the following things (nothing fancy): TextView for playing time Progress Bar for progress visulization Play/Pause/Stop buttons NO playlist functionality required, the player will only play a single item (that's why I don't need next/previous buttons). It sounds pretty much like the standard audio-player of Android = 2.0. Sure, I could try to find its source code but that would require to tediously check out the entire source. • How do I limit the permissions of a C# program to read only on an SQLServer Database?

  Hi Guys, I have written some C# which connects to a live production database. I want to give my application read only access to the DB but am unsure how to achieve this. Is there any trivial way to get this done by amending the connection string? My understanding is that the application will logon with the credentials of the person running the application and hence may or may not have write access to the db based on that fact. Can I statically limit the permissions of the application so that if someone changes the program to do something devastating at a later date any manipulation will fail?   Is there a way to add a redraw callback to a live screen object, i.e. not via inheritance? Reasoning: I want to draw an overlay from an extension for widget sdk (substituting defunct position:absolute), so the screen is created by the bbwp stub. I can get it by Ui.getUiEngine().getActiveScreen() and draw on it quite nicely, but I need a way to redraw when appropriate. Note: I've abandoned the approach to push the overlay as a screen, because i couldn't make it transparent / find a way to pass events through.

  I watch some video and read articles about MVVM pattern and start thinking how should I implement it in my Silverlight app. So at first I create Silverlight application. I think that for clear view I create 3 folders: View - for each user control page in my app, ViewModel - for c# class which will querying date and Model- Entity Data Model of my SQL Server or Oracle Database. And now I am confused, cause I want to implement *WCF/RIA Services/Web services* in my project. In which folder should I put in class of services? I see in examples that Services take date and filtering it and then output data was binding in View - so It looks as ViewModel. But I was sure that someone use Services in Model and that I want to do. But how? Can someone explain me implementing Services as Model? Is my point of view at MVVM is correctly?

  I have to develop some software in my school to utilize the accelerometer in the Wiimote for recording data from experiments, for example finding the acceleration and velocity of a moving object. I understand how the accelerometer values will be used but I am sort of stuck on the programming front. There is a set of things that I would like to do: Live streaming of data from the Wiimote via bluetooth Use the accelerometer values to find velocity and displacment via integration Plot a set of results Avoid the use of the infrared sensor on the Wiimote Please can anyone give me their thoughts on how to go about this. Also it would be great if people could direct me to existing projects that utizlise the wiimote. Also can someone suggest what would be the best programming language to use for this. My current bet is on using Visual basic. Any sort of help is greatly appretiated.

• msvsmon is locking up my pdbs

  During developement of my media center plugin (which has a few custom build steps to gac stuff and such) msvsmon has a rather annoying behaviour. First compilation usually goes well, but subsequent compilations complain about myplugin.pdb being locked Error 1 Unexpected error creating debug information file 'C:\Users\sam\source\myfile.PDB' -- 'C:\Users\sam\source\obj\Debug\myfile.pdb: The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process. If I exit VS and nuke the object directory, I am able to compile again. Also, if I kill off msvsmon.exe I am able to compile again (but can not debug) Has anyone seen this error? Are there any workarounds? I already disabled live semantic errors, just in case.

• Action Controller: Exception - ID not found

  Hi Everyone, I am slowly getting the hang of Rails and thanks to a few people I now have a basic grasp of the database relations and associations etc. You can see my previous questions here: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2714621/rails-database-relationships I have setup my applications models with all of the necessary has_one and has_many :through etc. but when I go to add a kase and choose from a company from the drop down list - it doesnt seem to be assigning the company ID to the kase.
