How to handle the browsers who don't support HTML5/CSS3

Hi, I have been looking into HTML5 and CSS3 and have been liking it quite a lot. Got around the modernizr API, but am stuck at one point, and that leads to further confusions: How will I write a code that caters to the situation of non-compatibility between browsers ? This leads to the following confusions: if I write the doctype as <!DOCTYPE HTML> and my page is accessed in IE6, then ho IE6 will handle the page? If I try to include <video> tag and the page is again accessed by IE6/IE7IE8 (which don't support this tag), Then how am I supposed to be rolling back to flash for them? Should I use some JS to show/hide the content appropriately? I would love to hear some thoughts of you guys. If needed, please mark this post as a community wiki. Thanks!

PHP File Serving Script: Unreliable Downloads?

This post started as a question on ServerFault ( http://serverfault.com/questions/131156/user-receiving-partial-downloads ) but I determined that our php script was the culprit. So I'm issuing an updated question here about what I believe is the actual issue. I am using a php script to verify permissions and then serve up a file for users of my website to download. Most of the time, this works, but recently one user has been seeing problems with larger downloads. He is only getting ~80% of downloads for files that are 100MB in size. Also, all downloads from this script fail to report a filesize. Further, tests revealed that the same user COULD reliably download each of the failed files if given a direct link (at which point the filesize is reported). Here's the relevant snippet of code that we are using to serve the file: header("Content-type:$contenttype"); $len = filesize($filename); header("Content-Length: $len"); header("Content-Disposition: attachment; filename=".$title.".".$ext); readfile($filename); Note that $contenttype, $filename, $title, and $ext are all set correctly before we get here. These have been triple-checked. None of them are the problem. Also, $len does provide the correct filesize. While researching this issue, I came across this post: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1334471/content-length-header-always-zero It seems that I am encountering the same issue. When I use the script, I get chunked encoding on the file and no size is set for content-length. I'm hypothesizing that something is going wrong on the large downloads, leading him to get a zero-length chunk before the end of the file. I would like to efficiently generate a unique list of combinations of numbers based on a starting list of numbers. example start list = [1,2,3,4,5] but the algorithm should work for [1,2,3...n] result = [1],[2],[3],[4],[5] [1,2],[1,3],[1,4],[1,5] [1,2,3],[1,2,4],[1,2,5] [1,3,4],[1,3,5],[1,4,5] [2,3],[2,4],[2,5] [2,3,4],[2,3,5] [3,4],[3,5] [3,4,5] [4,5] Note. I don't want duplicate combinations, although I could live with them, eg in the above example I don't really need the combination [1,3,2] because it already present as [1,2,3]

Displaying Powerpoint slides on a web page automatically

Anyone know of any Flash components that would do the job of displaying an external PPT/PPTX file in a Flash movie on a web page? Or a way of automatically parsing uploaded Powerpoint docs from a PHP-based CMS and displaying them on a web page. Our client needs to be able to upload a Powerpoint documents on their site without any intervention (if necessary). I know about Slideshare and the like, but the content needs to live on the client's web server due to security restrictions. Also, Adobe Presenter seems to require Adobe software/plugins on the clients machine which wouldn't be ideal. Thanks in advance

I am building universal app which uses MPMoviePlayerViewController to play the video. Observing notification "MPMoviePlayerPlaybackStateDidChangeNotification". jQuery focusin and append problem when textarea focus

I having problem with append() when the textbox is focus the second time. var i = 1; $('textarea').live('focusin', function(){ $(this).keydown(function(e){ var code = e.which; if(code === 13) { i++; $('#linenumbers').append('<li>' + i + '</li>');} }); This code will append on tag for each number, 2,3,4,5 (the first li is allread added, that why i=1) But when the user focus out and then focus in again it add two li foreache keydown, 6 and 7 = first keydown 8 and 9 = second keydown third focus it add 3 numbers, and so on.. How can i check that i just add one li each time you hit enter. Hope you get the problem!

I have a table cell, and when the user clicks on it, I replace the contents of the table cell with an input tag with the current contents as the default. 403 Error when Authenticating using tumblr gem for rails application

I have a ruby-on-rails application that wishes to utilise the tumblr gem for adding posts when an action is taken (eg: creating a blog post) I currently have the tumblr gem installed and can manage to fetch my posts using @tumblruser = Tumblr::User.new('myemail','mypassword') However when i go to add a post where it asks me to pass the user information like so (according to the API for the gem) post = Tumblr::Post.create(@tumblruser, :type => 'video', :embed => @post.video_html, :title => @post.title, :caption => @post.content) it just does not want to authenticate and returns a 403 error anyone had any experience with this?

HTML5: Can't drag on-the-fly created <div> tag even though draggable='true' Do I need to "BLESS"

After creating a div on the fly with this markup: $('.circuit').prepend("<div class='component' draggable='true'>TRANSISTOR</div>"); It is NOT draggable itself :( Is jQuery prepend() the correct way to create "live" tags in the DOM? Do I need to somehow bless it a different way to make draggable=true really work? How to I wire it up so that on-the-fly divs can be draggable? AFTER NOTE: I added a static div and that is draggable. INTERESTING: I view both the static and dynamic using FireFox F12 Firebug and they are identical. But one is draggable and one is not!!!

Do I need to Dispose to deregister events?

Say I have two classes, and neither of them are GUI components. Class A is a short lived object that registers for an event declared by a long lived object B. For example public A(B b) { b.ChangeEvent += OnChangeEvent; } If A never deregisters from B's event, will A never be garbage collected? Does A need a Dispose method just to deregister from B's event? There is also a related second question. If A and B should both live for the entire execution time of the application, does A need to deregister?

ASP.net SessionState Error in Design Mode

I'm getting a weird error in the design view for a user creation page for 2 controls: Error Creating Control - wCreateUser Session state can only be used when enableSessionState is set to true, either in a configuration file or in the Page directive. (There's some more) I've done both of these, but I'm still getting the error in design mode. The controls work fine when compiled, and on the live site - this is just in the Visual Web Developer 2010 Design view for the page. Any ideas as to how I can resolve this? Thanks!

Are there programming languages taht rely on non-latin alphabets?

Every programming language I have ever seen has been based on the Latin alphabet, this is not surprising considering I live in Canada... But it only really makes sense that there would be programming languages based on other alphabets, or else bright computer scientists across the world would have to learn a new alphabet to go on in the field. I know for a fact that people in countries dominated by other alphabets develop languages based off the Latin alphabet (eg. Ruby from Japan), but just how common is it for programming languages to be based off of other alphabets like Arabic, or Cyrillic, or even writing systems which are not alphabetic but rather logographic in nature such as Japanese Kanji? Also are any of these languages in active widespread use, or are they mainly used as teaching tools? This is something that has bugged me since I started programming, and I have never run across someone who could think of a real answer.

Wordpress Taxonomy

I am creating a Wordpress blog (no live link yet because it's still at a planning stage). I want to set up the following tag structure: Category 1: Services Tags: Web design, logo design, print design, etc etc. Category 2: Type of clients Tags: small businesses, large companies So each post will be tagged with one or more tags from Category 1, and one tag from Category 2. However, I heard that using more than one Category per post is a bad idea in terms of SEO? But then, how can I go about it? I don't want any SEO penalties, but I will need to somehow categorize each post using these 2 distinct categories. Should I create some custom taxonomies? That seems like an overkill to me. The solution is probably something rather simple but it just escapes me. I'm not very experienced with taxonomies so I'll appreciate any suggestions.

Two versions of same asp.net app using same server as stateserver - bad?

We have 2 production web servers for our web app, load balanced to handle lots of traffic. We also have a similar setup for testing. Test pool: [TEST 1]---[TEST 2] Prod pool: [PROD 1]---[PROD 2] When comparing the Web.Config of the app versions (test vs live) I discovered something surprising: both pools have the same value for stateConnectionString. If I understand right, this means they are using the same state server: <sessionState mode="StateServer" stateConnectionString="tcpip=123.123.123.123:42424" cookieless="false" timeout="30"/> Is this a problem? (How does the state server not confuse the two pools)? I was having odd only-sometimes slowdown/errors on the test server, that's why I was looking at this in the first place, but the prod pool runs fine...

receive emails in a .NET service (C#)

Hi, this is my first posting on stackoverflow, so don't flame me too much ;) I'm building a service that's monitoring devices and should be able to receive emails from users, parse them and take action accordingly. It should also be able to send emails about the status of the devices, etc. I'll be using Windows.Live email, and as I said, a .NET service that should be able to send/recieve emails. I am wondering what kind of system would I need to cater for receiving the emails, as I already know how to send them via the System.net.Mail API. Thanks. Developer oriented hardware benchmarks?

Perhaps I'm looking in the wrong places, but every hardware benchmark I've found, for nearly any component, is oriented towards gamers and/or workstations (video editing etc). Is there anyone doing benchmarks that are relevant to software developers? For example, take SSDs. I don't care how fast Crysis loads off an SSD -- that is completely worthless information. What I want to know is, which drive yields the quickest build times? What about Intellisense and refactoring operations? What RAID configuration has the biggest benefit? I could probably come up with more examples, but you get the point. Long story short, where are the benchmarks that tell me which hardware will be most effective in helping me be a productive software developer?

Painting to Form then to Printer

I often find myself needing to create custom reports that do NOT work with Crystal Reports or Report Viewer. Often, I hack a DataTable together and dumping that into a DataGridView control. It is never pretty, and printing is difficult. What I need is a class that I can call using the OnPaint event, but I've never sat down and written all of the Pen and Brush commands until now. Painting to the screen and painting to a printer both use the Graphics object, so I want to build a class that I'd pass in the Graphics object, my window bounds (a Rectangle), and some data (in the form of an instance of my class) that I'd use to paint a form or a sheet of paper. That sounds like a great concept! Surely, someone has done something like this before. Does anyone know of a book, a website tutorial, or video that goes into this? If someone wants to write all that out for me here, more power to you - but I'd think that would be too much work.

How, exactly does HTML5's GeoLocation work?

I know the browser shares my IP address and details of nearby wireless networks to determine my location, but what sort of info does it know about nearby wifi networks? For example, where I live are no public wireless networks, and from my home I can see about 5 private networks, yet my location is determined within 20 meters. With there being no open networks nearby, how does Google determine my location? The only way I can think of is that Google mapped the locations of all wireless networks when they mapped streets for Street View. I've searched about online, but all I can't find any specific details.

Redirect application's graphical output in Windows Vista/7 (with DWM)

I want to create a desktop manager that takes informations of all running applications including states and screenshots to display and manipulate them in my virtual space (probably in 3D). It can be considered as another layer of abstraction on top of Windows itself. Because many native Windows Vista/7 features like Flip 3D and Live Thumbnails are able to show each window's activities in real-time e.g. video keeps playing in taskbar's thumbnail, I think DWM allows an application to redirect its output to somewhere else or some special processes are able to collect other applications' graphical outputs (maybe of child processes only). Has Microsoft released a set of public APIs to do so? If not, is it technically possible? And is it easier if I limit my scope to just .NET applications with WPF?

How stable or unstable is symfony 2.0 ?

Well, I know it's a preview, and I know it says that it's not yet ready for production, and yet I dare ask the question. I need to start building a pretty big application, which is planned to go live at around sep-oct 2010. Lets say I will not release the application to production until the stable version of symfony 2.0 will be released - is it a good idea (well, I'll settle for a viable idea) for me to start building the application using the 2.0 version ? How big is the chance I will need to rewrite/replace code I've written due to core changes in the framework ? Thanks. Edit: the other option right now, is to use symfony 1.4. I have thought and tried Zend Framework, but I refuse to re-invent each and every module, which will cost me a lot of programming hours (if not days/weeks).

Streaming audio to mobile phones, what technology to use ?

I'm planning on building an application where audio media is going to be streamed to the mobile phone for the user to listen. The targets are smartphones: iPhone/Blackberry/Android/(J2ME ?). I see that streaming on iPhone has to be done with HTTP Live streaming, but I don't see it supported by other platforms. Should I broadcast the streams via rstp ? http ? Is there any way to use a unified solution for all the different mobile platform ? If anyone already had to go through this, help would be gratly appreciated.
