• The best JSF coding pattern for editing JPA entities using @RequestScoped only

  I am in a project where I will write a lot of pages like this, so I want to use the most efficient (to write) coding pattern. Background: In the past I have used CODI's @ViewAccessScoped to preserve state between requests, and more recently I have started using flash scoped objects to save state. I can't use JSF @ViewScoped because I use CDI and they don't play well together. So I want to see if I can do this with only @RequestScoped backing beans. Instead, the p:messages is shown with whatever FacesMessage(s) the accessOK() method cares to set. When the Save button is clicked, a new instance of Backing is built, and then there are a lot of calls to the getRecord() getter before the setID() setter is called. So the logic in getRecord() breaks because it cannot rely on the id property being valid when it is called. When this was a @ViewAccessScoped (or ViewScoped) backing bean, then both the id and record properties are already set when the form is processed with the commandButton. Alternatively you can save those properties in flash storage but that has its own problems I want to avoid. So is there a way to make this programming model work within the specification?

• Mbean registered but not found in mbean Server

  I have a problem about the mbeans. I have created a simple mbean and I have registered it on the default mBeanServer that is run (Via eclipse or java -jar mbean.jar) and in the same process if I try to fouund the mbean registered with a simple query: for (ObjectInstance instance : mbs.queryMBeans(ObjectNameMbean, null)) { System.out.println(instance.toString()); } the query retuerns my mbean, but if I start another process and try to search this mbean registered the mbeas is not found! why? So I start another process to search this mbean but nothing. I 'm not using jboss but the local Java virtual Machine but my scope is to deploy this simple application in one ejb (autostart) and another ejb will read all informations. All suggestions are really apprecciated. • How do I get around this lambda expression outer variable issue?

  I'm playing with PropertyDescriptor and ICustomTypeDescriptor (still) trying to bind a WPF DataGrid to an object, for which the data is stored in a Dictionary. Since if you pass WPF DataGrid a list of Dictionary objects it will auto generate columns based on the public properties of a dictionary (Comparer, Count, Keys and Values) my Person subclasses Dictionary and implements ICustomTypeDescriptor. ICustomTypeDescriptor defines a GetProperties method which returns a PropertyDescriptorCollection. PropertyDescriptor is abstract so you have to subclass it, I figured I'd have a constructor that took Func and an Action parameters that delegate the getting and setting of the values in the dictionary. I then create a PersonPropertyDescriptor for each Key in the dictionary like this: foreach (string s in this.Keys) { var descriptor = new PersonPropertyDescriptor( s, new Func<object>(() => { return this[s]; }), new Action<object>(o => { this[s] = o; })); propList.Add(descriptor); } The problem is that each property get's its own Func and Action but they all share the outer variable s so although the DataGrid autogenerates columns for "ID","FirstName","LastName", "Age", "Gender" they all get and set against "Gender" which is the final resting value of s in the foreach loop. How can I ensure that each delegate uses the desired dictionary Key, i.e. the value of s at the time the Func/Action is instantiated? Much obliged. • Not sure why I'm getting a NullPointerException when creating a Swing component

• Rogue PropertyChanged notifications from ViewModel

  The following simple program is causing me a Databinding headache. I'm new to this which is why I suspect it has a simple answer. Basically, I have two text boxes bound to the same property myString. I have not set up the ViewModel (simply a class with one property, myString) to provide any notifications to the View for when myString is changed, so even although both text boxes operate a two way binding there should be no way that the text boxes update when myString is changed, am I right? Except... In most circumstances this is true - I use the 'change value' button at the bottom of the window to change the value of myString to whatever the user types into the adjacent text box, and the two text boxes at the top, even although they are bound to myString, do not change. Fine. However, if I edit the text in TextBox1, thus changing the value of myString (although only when the text box loses focus due to the default UpdateSourceTrigger property, see reference), TextBox2 should NOT update as it shouldn't receive any updates that myString has changed. However, as soon as TextBox1 loses focus (say click inside TextBox2) TextBox2 is updated with the new value of myString. My best guess so far is that because the TextBoxes are bound to the same property, something to do with TextBox1 updating myString gives TextBox2 a notification that it has changed. Very confusing as I haven't used INotifyPropertyChanged or anything like that. To clarify, I am not asking how to fix this. I know I could just change the binding mode to a oneway option. I am wondering if anyone can come up with an explanation for this strange behaviour?   I am learning to apply DIC to MVC project. So, I have sketched this DDD-ish DIC-ready-ish layout to my best understanding. I have read many blogs articles wikis for the last few days. However, I am not confident about implementing it correctly. Could you please demonstrate to me how to put them into DIC the proper way? I prefer Ninject or Windsor after all the readings, but anyDIC will do as long as I can get the correct idea how to do it. More: if I remove that comment and then write History.Laps.Clear() (before or after setting binding) binding is not working anymore. It's like it gets crazy if collection is empty. I really don't understand the reason... UPDATE AND SOLUTION: If i move History = new ChronoLaps(); LayoutRoot.DataContext = History; from butStart_Click to public MainPage() everything works as expected. Can someone explain me the reason?

  I’ve created a GPS program that track positions in realtime in the background for Windows mobile 6.1 in 2008-2009. It ran fine on these devices for many years. For some reason, the same code never worked perfectly on Windows Mobile 6.5. After many hour of operations (mostly when nobody use the device), I receive a “Timeout” (code 258) from the function "WaitForMultipleObjects": this.GPSEvent_WaitValue = WaitForMultipleObjects(2, this.GPSEvent_Handles, 0, 45000); Again, this can work for hours and suddenly, it's just impossible to get another position without : UPDATE: - Restarting the device (GoogleMap confirms that there's no GPS device present!) It has something to do with Windows Mobile going to sleep and slowing up my thread. • How to generalize a method call in Java (to avoid code duplication)

  I have a process that needs to call a method and return its value. However, there are several different methods that this process may need to call, depending on the situation. If I could pass the method and its arguments to the process (like in Python), then this would be no problem. However, I don't know of any way to do this in Java. Here's a concrete example. (This example uses Apache ZooKeeper, but you don't need to know anything about ZooKeeper to understand the example.) The ZooKeeper object has several methods that will fail if the network goes down. In this case, I always want to retry the method. To make this easy, I made a "BetterZooKeeper" class that inherits the ZooKeeper class, and all of its methods automatically retry on failure. The run() method holds the retry logic, and the action() method is a placeholder for whichever ZooKeeper method needs to be run. Each of the public methods of BetterZooKeeper instantiates an anonymous inner class that is a subclass of the RetryableZooKeeperAction inner class, and it overrides the action() method. The local variables are (strangely enough) implicitly passed to the action() method, which is possible because they are final. In the end, this approach does work and it does eliminate the duplication of the retry logic. However, it has two major drawbacks: (1) it creates a new object every time a method is called, and (2) it's ugly and hardly readable. Also I had to workaround the 'delete' method which has a void return value. So, here is my question: is there a better way to do this in Java? This can't be a totally uncommon task, and other languages (like Python) make it easier by allowing methods to be passed. I suspect there might be a way to do this through reflection, but I haven't been able to wrap my head around it.

• Looking for suggestions on how to reuse AlertDialogs to confirm actions of contextual menus on the items of an ActivityList

  I use a ListActivity to display a list of items. The user can long-press an item in the list to display a contextual menu. This menu contains among other things an option to delete the long-pressed item. When the user selects this option, a dialog pops up asking for confirmation of the deletion. Upon confirmation, the item is deleted from the list. I would like to reuse the AlertDialog as much as possible. My attempts at using onPrepareDialog(int, View, Bundle) have been defeated by the fact that the Bundle is not passed to the DialogInterface.OnClickListener. I end up having to recreate a listener on every invocation. I see several ways to solve this: recreate the dialog on every occasion (pros: simple, cons: wasteful) keep the DialogInterface.OnClickListener in a field on the ListActivity and keep the item to be deleted as a field of the listener. (pros: no memory waste, cons: need to manage state). Q: is this safe? have onPrepareDialog update the title, and bind new View.OnClickListeners on the buttons of the AlertDialog. (pros: limit waste, cons: new View.OnClickListener on every invocation). If DialogInterface.OnClickListener accepted a Bundle, I wouldn't have to jump through hoops to keep track of the item being deleted. This is not a blocker, but I would love to see an elegant solution. • Setting a DataGrid background color based on the previous row

  I'm trying to setup a grid where I do column sorting, but I wanted to do zebra striping, only rather than every other row or every x rows, I want it to be based on the value of cells. i.e. All cells that contain 0 have a blue background, the next value would have a white background, the next value would be blue, etc.... The problem I have is that I can't seem to find where to actually do the setting of the background colors. I'm using a custom sorter and I tried setting it in there after I re-order the list and set the data source, but it appears that when the data source is set, that the rows don't exist yet. I tried using the DataContextChanged, but that event doesn't seem to be firing.   I am learning Wicket by "Enjoying Web Development with Wicket" book. And in an example: int weight = ((Integer) weightModel.getObject()).intValue(); is used. When I click Submit button it throws exception. But after changed the code to: int weight=Integer.parseInt( (String) weightModel.getObject()); It works fine. What is the reason for throwing the exception? • SSH connection times out

  Given: vm - a WinXPsp3 virtual machine hosted by a Win7sp1 physical machine alice is the user on vm srv - a Win2008R2sp1 server bob is the user on srv quake - a linux server mark is the user on quake Both vm and srv have the same new installation of cygwin (1.7.9) and openssh. I think the problem is in its settings, but I have no idea where exactly. The Network Adapter is set to Bridged. EDIT2 All the machines are located in the company lab, I think all of them are on the same segment, but I may be wrong. Below is the ipconfig /all output for each machine (skipping the linux server). I have deleted the Tunnel adapters to keep the output minimal. If anyone thinks they matter, do tell so and I will post them as well. In addition ping output is given to show that DNS is correct. Something else, may be relevant, may be not. • Meraki wireless access point disconnects clients

  We have a Meraki MR16 Cloud Managed AP and it disconnects certain clients. The clients with Intel wireless cards work without any disconnects. The Meraki reports the follow in its event log: Sep 4 09:55:47 WPA authentication Sep 4 09:55:47 802.11 association channel: 11, rssi: 64 Sep 4 09:55:38 802.11 disassociation client has left AP Sep 4 09:55:38 WPA deauthentication vap: 0, radio: 0, aid: 1633956416 An example wireless network card which the Meraki disconnects is Realtek RTL8191SE 802.11b/g/n WiFi Adapter. The realtek laptop is sat 2 meters away from the AP and has a lot of signal and the Meraki reports minimal interference. Any ideas why it disconnects non-intel wireless network cards?

  I have used the marvelous example posted at: http://www.codeproject.com/KB/WPF/WPFDataGridExamples.aspx to bind a WPF datagrid to a datatable. The source code below compiles fine; it even runs and displays the contents of the InfoWork datatable in the wpf datagrid. Hooray! But the WPF page with the datagrid will not display in the designer. I get an incomprehensible error instead on my design page which is shown at the end of this posting. I assume the designer is having some difficulty instantiating the dataview for display in the grid. How can I fix that? • How can I get a Silverlight application to check for an update and ask user to upgrade?

  I have made an out-of-browser silverlight application which I want to automatically update every time there is a new .xap file uploaded to the server. When the user right-clicks the application and clicks on Updates, the default is set to "Check for updates, but let me choose whether to download and install them": This leads me to believe that it is possible to make my Silverlight application automatically detect if there is a new .xap file present on the server, and if there is, the Silverlight client will automatically ask the user if he would like to install it. This however is not the case. I upload a new .xap file and the Silverlight application does nothing. Even if I add this to my App.xaml.cs: -- private void Application_Startup(object sender, StartupEventArgs e) { this.RootVisual = new BaseApp(); if (Application.Current.IsRunningOutOfBrowser) { Application.Current.CheckAndDownloadUpdateAsync(); } } and update the .xap file, the Silverlight application does nothing. • WCF: Manually configuring Binding and Endpoint causes SerciveChannel Faulted State

  Hi there, I've created a ComVisible assembly to be used in a classic-asp application. The assembly should act as a wcf client and connect to a wcf service host (inside a windows service) on the same machine using named pipes. The wcf service host works fine with other clients, so the problem must be within this assembly. In order to get things work I added a service reference to the ComVisible assembly and proxy classes and the corresponding app.config settings were generated for me. Everything fine so far except that the app config would not be recognized when doing an CreateObject with my assembly in the asp code.   Hi, i am using the Ado.Net Entity Framework with Code Only (Tutorial at: ADO.NET team blog) and i want to be as much database independent as possible. In my first approach i just want to go for Sql Express and Sql Compact databases. With Sql Express everthing works fine but with Sql Compact i get the exception mentioned in my question. Does anybody knows if it is possible to connect to Sql Compact with the Code Only approach? (with a generated .edmx file for a Sql Compact database everthing works fine, but i want to use code only!) • Android beginner: Touch events in android gridview

  I am using the following code to do things with gridview(slightly modified from http://developer.android.com/resources/tutorials/views/hello-gridview.html). I want to replace the onClicklistener and the onClick() method with their "touch" equivalents i.e. touchlistener and onTouch() so that when i touch an element in the gridview the image of the element changes and a double touch on the same element takes it back to the orginal state. How do I do this? I can't get my code to do this. The clicklistener works to some extent but the touch isn't.
