• Insanity Day 3

  So on Tuesday (Sept 25th) I did my 2nd Insanity workout (for those keeping track, I’m not counting the fit test as #1) and it was MURDER on my legs. I wasn’t able to get to it yesterday, and I’m noticing a trend in this first week – I can easily push to do it every 2nd day, but life is just too crazy busy right now (yeah yeah, excuses right? I look at it more like priorities – I have a tech conference I’m running next week, crazy days right now). Today I moved to the 3rd workout – but honestly I couldn’t get into it. It was the cardio recovery day, which is a lot of stretching and stuff. I think if I had been doing the first two sessions back to back I’d need it, but I didn’t want to cool down today – I wanted to push! So I moved to the next DVD in the series but for some reason couldn’t get it to run on my computer, even with SlyDVD. So – back to Disc 1 and the Plyometric Cardio Circuit! Fantastic workout again this morning. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not all of a sudden in amazing shape, but I am noticing already that I seem to be somewhat better – I’m really looking forward to my next fit test at the end of the month!

  I seek a tool that can be run on the command line like so: tablescrape 'http://someURL.foo.com' [n] If n is not specified and there's more than one HTML table on the page, it should summarize them (header row, total number of rows) in a numbered list. If n is specified or if there's only one table, it should parse the table and spit it to stdout as CSV or TSV. Potential additional features: To be really fancy you could parse a table within a table, but for my purposes -- fetching data from wikipedia pages and the like -- that's overkill. The Perl module HTML::TableExtract can do this and may be good place to start for writing the tool I have in mind. An option to asciify any unicode. An option to apply an arbitrary regex substitution for fixing weirdnesses in the parsed table. • I didn't completely get 100% on a programming job interview, should I worry?

  I recently had a phone job interview with a 1 hour Programming practical. It had two questions on it and I know I answered one completely correct and got most of the second correct. Should I worry about getting the Job just based on that? The actual phone job interview went very well and they told me that I answered their questions well and my questions I aimed at them were very good questions and some they had not heard before but should have in the past. so big question is should I worry? or is not 100% completion ok.

• Sharepoint survey: How to identify the question fields when fetching survey information from the Lis

  I am wanting to access survey information via the Lists web service and display the questions contained in the survey. The result contains a large number of Field nodes some of which are the questions in the survey. The other fields contain other information such as author, last changed etc. How can I pick out the questions? I had thought that all non-questions would be hidden but this is not the case. Here is my code as it is at the moment. It returns about 16 items. • Is there any good programming books forum out there?

  I always feel the internet forums are a good way to gain knowledge - asking questions and get some answers from everybody, and SO is a great example. But when I get questions reading some programming books, I wonder to whom can I ask the questions. O'Reilly and PragProg have their own book forums, and some authors open their own forums. Or, we might be able to send an email to the author if that is absolutely necessary. Is there any good forum on programming books? Can you share any good programming book forums on the web? Or, is SO the best place to ask some questions in programming books? I found some book reading forums, but not programming books.

• Popularity of Git/Mercurial/Bazaar vs. which to recommend

  Going by the number of questions on this site for these three distributed version control systems, it seems like Git either is more popular, or is more difficult (hence requiring more questions), or has more features (hence requiring more questions). Or most probably a combination of the three. (Let's say that popularity on this site equates to popularity at large.) Here are the numbers at time of writing: [subversion] or [svn]: 2353 [git]: 726 [mercurial] or [hg]: 169 [bazaar] or [bzr]: 50 The recent historical popularity of Subversion is clearly reflected by the number of questions, indicating at least a small tipping of the scales towards Git over the Mercurial or Bazaar. It's not entirely satisfactory having three competing yet largely equivalent open source products to choose from. Personally I use Git and I'm fine with the other two. But when it comes to recommending one system over the others, I'd like to ask: can we start recommending one safely yet?

  class Question < ActiveRecord::Base belongs_to :author end class Author < ActiveRecord::Base has_many :questions end When I find some questions, I usually need to get their authors at the same time, so I use: Question.find(:all, :include=>:authors) But I don't write the ":include" part everywhere. I hope I can define the "include" somewhere only once, and when I find questions, the author will be automaticly loaded. Is there any way to do this?

• Creating new tags in StackOverflow [closed]

  Hi, Earlier users with more than 300 reputations or so (don't remeber exactly) had the ability to create new tags which is tagged to their Questions , so that it was easier to search for similar questions with the tags. And also the tags helped to identify the context of the Questions asked for. I had also created few new tags for the questions that i ask for. But now it seems the Stackover team without prior notice to the users or any intimation has revoked the permission for creating new tags and also has set the reputation to more that 1500 for creating new tags. Isn't this a bully act or did they feel its useless/unnecessary not required to inform all the registered users before making the changes ? thoughts....

  This is a toy project I'm working on at the moment. My app contains questions with multiple choice answers. The question url is in the following format, with GET & POST mapping to different actions on the questions controller. GET: url.com/questions/:category/:difficulty => 'ask' POST: url.com/questions/:category/:difficulty => 'answer' I'm wondering if it's worth redesigning this into a RESTful style. I know I'd need to introduce answers as a resource, but I'm struggling to think of a url that would look natural for answering that question. Would a redesign be worthwhile? How would you go about structuring the urls?

• Wordpress.. Is it a CMS?

  I recently was contacted by a client who simply wanted to increase their organic rankings in Google. My approach was to do the following: A) Take them off of their overpriced host and move them to a nicer, cheaper, more feature-rich hosting solution which included a simple Wordpress install. B) Apply a theme to WordPress which followed the look and feel of their existing website. C) Train my client on how to login to their copy of Wordpress and create/manage pages/posts. This took me very little time.. Most of the work in converting asp forms into php and tweaking a theme to fit their design. Now my client is able to create/manage as many pages or posts as they desire. I believe, for this purpose, Worpress was the easiest solution. Would you categorize Wordpress as a CMS?   I have two models in relation one-to-many: class Question(db.Model): questionText = db.StringProperty(multiline=False) class Answer(db.Model): answerText = db.StringProperty(multiline=False) question = db.ReferenceProperty(Question, collection_name='answers') I have front-end implemented in Flex and use pyamf to load data. When i try to load all answers with related questions all works as desired and I can access field answer.question however in case of loading questions (e.g. by Questions.all() ), 'question.answers' remains empty/null (though on server/python side I can revise question.answers without problem - probably after lazy-loading). So is it possible to load all questions along with answers ? (I know this is possible in JPA Java api but what about python ?) Shoud I use additional setting, GQL query or django framework to make it work ?

• Implementing a State Machine in Angular.js to control routing

  Can anyone help me with integrating a state machine to control routing? What's the best method to do this? Create a service? I need to basically intercept every $location request, run the state machine and let it figure out what the next $location.path should be. Think of the problem like a bank of questions that get added and removed over time. The user visits once in a while, passes in the user's answers object to the statemachine, and the statemachine figures out which question to load. This is my pseudocode, but i need to figure out where to put this or what event I can hook into to make sure all route requests are passed through the machine. Do I need a specific stateMachine controller? Do I create a service? Where do I use the service? • Spaced repetition (SRS) for learning

  A client has asked me to add a simple spaced repeition algorithm (SRS) for an onlinebased learning site. But before throwing my self into it, I'd like to discuss it with the community. Basically the site asks the user a bunch of questions (by automatically selecting say 10 out of 100 total questions from a database), and the user gives either a correct or incorrect answer. The users result are then stored in a database, for instance: userid questionid correctlyanswered dateanswered 1 123 0 (no) 2010-01-01 10:00 1 124 1 (yes) 2010-01-01 11:00 1 125 1 (yes) 2010-01-01 12:00 Now, to maximize a users ability to learn all answers, I should be able to apply an SRS algorithm so that a user, next time he takes the quiz, receives questions incorrectly answered more often; than questions answered correctly. Also, questions that are previously answered incorrectly, but recently often answered correctly should occur less often. Have anyone implemented something like this before? Any tips or suggestions? What I'm looking for is the answer to these questions: Is there an official correlation between JEE / J2EE and J2SE / JDK versions? If the answer is yes, where is it written?   I'm trying to implement the following feature: I want just one css file to be attached for any page that I rendered. For example take StackOverflow site. For the questions page, we will have questions.css file. so.com/questions ---> questions.css so.com/question/1234/title ---> question.css so.com/about ---> about.css so.com/faq ---> faq.css Now, I know that this css files share code in common, because they may have the same MasterPage(s) / UserControls. So, the solution need to take into account MasterPages, views and usercontrols as well. So, what will be the right solution for this kind of problem? I'm thinking about one solution, I'll put is as an answer, but maybe you have a better solution for this?

I get null.... what am I missing here?

• Survey Data Model - How to avoid EAV and excessive denormalization?

  Hi everyone, My database skills are mediocre at best and I have to design a data model for survey data. I have spent some thoughts on this and right now I feel that I am stuck between some kind of EAV model and a design involving hundreds of tables, each with hundreds of columns (and thousands of records). There must be a better way to do this and I hope that the wise folks on this forum can help me. I have already searched various forums, but I couldn't really find a solution. If it has already been given elsewhere, please excuse me and provide me with a link so I can read it up. Some assumptions about the data I have to deal with: Each survey consists of 1 to n questionnaires Each questionnaire consists of 100-2,000 questions (please ignore that 2,000 questions really sound like a lot to answer...) Questions can be of various types: multiple-choice, free text, a number (like age, income, percentages, ...) Each survey involves 10-200 countries (These are not the respondents. The respondents are actually people in the countries.) Depending on the type of questionnaire, each questionnaire is answered by 100-20,000 respondents per country. A country can adapt the questionnaires for a survey, i.e. add, remove or edit questions The data for one country is gathered in a separate database in that country. There is no possibility for online integration from the start. The data for all countries has to be integrated later. This means for example, if a country has deleted a question, that data must somehow be derived from what they sent in order to achieve a uniform design across all countries I will have to write the integration and cleaning software, which will need to work with every country's data In the end the data needs to be exported to flat files, one rectangular grid per country and questionnaire. I have already discussed this topic with people from various backgrounds and have not come to a good solution yet. I mainly got two kinds of opinions. The domain experts, who are used to working with flat files (spreadsheet-style) for data processing and analysis vote for a denormalized structure with loads of tables and columns as I described above (1 table per country and questionnaire). This sounds terrible to me, because I learned that wide tables are to be avoided, it will be annoying to determine which columns are actually in a table when working with it, the database will become cluttered with hundreds of tables (or I even need to set up multiple databases, each with a similar yet a bit differetn design), etc. O-O-programmers vote for a strongly "normalized" design, which would effectively lead to a central table containing all the answers from all respondents to all questions. This table would either need to contain a column of type sql_variant type or multiple answer columns with different types to store answers of different types (multiple choice, free text, ..). The former would essentially be a EAV model. I tend to follow Joe Celko here, who strongly discourages its use (he calls it OTLT or "One True Lookup Table"). The latter would imply that each row would contain null cells for the not applicable types by design. Another alternative I could think of would be to create one table per answer type, i.e., one for multiple-choice questions, one for free text questions, etc.. That's not so generic, it would lead to a lot of union joins, I think and I would have to add a table if a new answer type is invented. • How can you ask a sensitive work question anonymously but still inform readers of your credibility a

  I would like to request opinions about my career/situation at work with a software development project. I would like to ask anonymously or created a new stackoverflow.com account because I think I may be identified by co-workers at my employer since I have referred them to (non-sensititive) technical questions I have asked here. So they might know my account and be able to follow my activity. If I create a new account it will have no reputation and some readers may ignore it, for example, because they might think that the user only wishes to take ideas from here and not contribute, i.e. not a committed stackoverflow poster. What are your thoughts? (I do feel that it is appropriate to ask such pogramming career/situational questions here as many others have and there are some good questions -and answers and it seems that the stackoverflow community accepts such questions even thought the site's strict guidelines are for specific answers and not discussion, and non-subjective questions. And thank goodness that is the case - not all problems faced by programmers are about the craft but also the human factors around it - where else would folks go?)

  I have two models Doctors and Questions like the follwong: Doctor Model class Doctor < ActiveRecord::Base has_many :questions has_many :brands accepts_nested_attributes_for :questions end Question model class Question < ActiveRecord::Base belongs_to :discipline belongs_to :doctor belongs_to :brand end Now you can clearly see that Doctor has many questions and brands and question belongs to doctor and brand.I want to add previously saved question to a doctor from doctors edit page. I want to remove them as well.How can I proceed ? I tried like : <%= form.fields_for :questions, question,:child_index => (question.new_record? ? • Displaying pic for user through a question's answer

  Ok, I am trying to display the profile pic of a user. The application I have set up allows users to create questions and answers (I am calling answers 'sites' in the code) the view in which I am trying to do so is in the /views/questions/show.html.erb file. It might also be of note that I am using the Paperclip gem. Here is the set up: Associations Users class User < ActiveRecord::Base has_many :questions, :dependent => :destroy has_many :sites, :dependent => :destroy has_many :notes, :dependent => :destroy has_many :likes, :through => :sites , :dependent => :destroy has_many :pics, :dependent => :destroy has_many :likes, :dependent => :destroy end Questions class Question < ActiveRecord::Base has_many :sites, :dependent => :destroy has_many :notes, :dependent => :destroy has_many :likes, :dependent => :destroy belongs_to :user end Answers (sites) class Site < ActiveRecord::Base belongs_to :question belongs_to :user has_many :notes, :dependent => :destroy has_many :likes, :dependent => :destroy has_attached_file :photo, :styles => { :small => "250x250>" } end Pics class Pic < ActiveRecord::Base has_attached_file :profile_pic, :styles => { :small => "100x100" } belongs_to :user end The /views/questions/show.html.erb is rendering the partial /views/sites/_site.html.erb which is calling the Answer (site) with: <% div_for site do %> <%=h site.description %> <% end %> I have been trying to do things like: <%=image_tag site.user.pic.profile_pic.url(:small) %> <%=image_tag site.user.profile_pic.url(:small) %> etc. But that is obviously wrong. My error directs me to the Questions#show action so I am imagining that I need to define something in there but not sure what. Is is possible to call the pic given the current associations, placement of the call, and if so what Controller additions do I need to make, and what line of code will call the pic?
