    Hi folks. This year, together with the Oracle Open World Latin America, happened another edition of the JavaOne Latin America, the more important event of Java for the developers community. I would like to share with you the slides that I've used in my session. The session was "The Future of JVM Performance Tuning" and the idea was to share some knowledge about JVM enhancements that Oracle implemented in Hotspot about performance, specially those ones related with GC ("Garbage Collection") and SDP ("Sockets Direct Protocol"). I know that the easiest profiling method is to log the start time and end time for each method, but I see more and more people using AOP to profile (add @profiled before each method).   • Swiss Re increases data warehouse performance and deploys in record time

    Great information on yet another data warehouse deployment on Exadata. A little background on Swiss Re: In 2002, Swiss Re established a data warehouse for its client markets and products to gather reinsurance information across all organizational units into an integrated structure. The data warehouse provided the basis for reporting at the group level with drill-down capability to individual contracts, while facilitating application integration and data exchange by using common data standards.     I'm developing a browser game where the player can shoot. Everytime he shoots it play a sound. Currently i'm using this code to play sounds in JavaScript: var audio = document.createElement("audio"); audio.src = "my_sound.mp3"; audio.play(); I'm worried about performance here. Will 10 simultaneous sounds impact my game performance too much? Will all audio objects stay in memory even after they are played?

    I've got a question concerning node.js performance. There is quite lot of "benchmarks" and a lot of fuss about great performance of node.js. But how does it stand in real world? Not just process empty request at high speed. If someone could try to compare this scenario: Java (or equivalent) server running an application with complex business logic between receiving request and sending response. How would node.js deal with it? If there was need for a lot of JavaScript processing on server side, is node.js really so fast that it can execute JavaScript, and stand a chance against more heavyveight competitors?

    I am wondering how to quickly test performance of my 3D graphics. Since glxgears is not benchmark what should I use. Also glxgears sometimes stuck at 60FPS, you cannot even compare before/after driver update (e.g. adding xorg-edgers PPA). Even glxgears doesn't really work out of box. One possibility is screensavers, but you can't see FPS. I am also not willing to install 600MB nexuiz, specially if I am running on Live-CD. Other 3D games are also very big... Unigine tests are too demanding for opensource drivers (problems with too low OpenGL and probably texture compression (S3TC...)). I would also like to test OpenGL 2.x extentions. How to quickly test your 3D performance?

    I installed ubuntu netbook edition on my netbook* expecting to get the best performance out of it, but apparently, that didn't turn out. Unity is a bit slow on it, and when I click on Files and folders it takes a while to load the respective interface and the bar at the top disappears and then loads in. Is this expected? Is there anything I can do to improve the performance?   • Optimus Bumblebee Performance

    After installing Ubuntu 12.04 and Bumblebee, I tested out the performance of the Nvidia card using Minecraft and a few other games. I've noticed it to be way slower than it was on Windows 7. Is this normal? I'm using the GT 630m. From what I've read online, nobody has said it to be slower than Windows. I'm just really curious because I want to use Linux so much more than Windows, but if I don't get the same performance I feel really picky. The Nvidia card is still faster than my Intel graphics on Ubuntu, but it's not as fast as it was for my on Windows. I get 60 - 80 fps on Minecraft on windows, while I get 28 - 48 fps on Ubuntu. Any Ideas why? Thanks so much!

  • Multiple database accesses or one massive access?

    What is a better approach when it comes to performance and optimal resource utilization: accessing a database multiple times through AJAX to only get the exact information needed when it is needed, or performing one access to retrieve an object that holds all information that might be needed, with a high probability that not all is actually needed? I know how to benchmark the actual queries, but I don't know how to test what is best when it comes to database performance when thousands of users are accessing the database simultaneously and how connection pooling comes into play.

    Ubuntu 12.10 beta 2 has awfull 3d performance and Video Tearing do something about this. Tearing is common issue on linux and makes linux sucks. Ubuntu also is bloated and uses compiz , i hope ubuntu developers should be more serious cause even a noob should know that compiz sucks now. I have no screen tearing and full opengl 3d performance on cinnamon ! And thats why i like linux mint 13. Ubuntu is so slow applications launching time is bigger compared to linux mint or xubuntu and many many times slower compared to arch linux. I was sattisfied before the 12.04 version now i'm just dissapointed..... (downvoters are simply noobs or silly fanboys and they deserve ubuntu)
