• Windows 7 Home Premium - Unable to View Chinese Characters Properly

  Is there a proper and permanent fix that will restore the display of Chinese Characters on a Windows 7 Home Premium Laptop computer? This problem has been occurring frequently now and a simple reboot no longer does the trick. The square boxes viewed on many applications and websites has been constantly bothering me and I wish to fix it asap. I have done a lot of research on it but have not been successful. Many responses were to install the language packs for Windows 7 Ultimate Users which apparently is not my case or to configure the "Region and Language" settings of the Control Panel, changing the system locale. Does anyone have any suggestions? All would be appreciated!

• VNC-like remote control over home network

  I'm aware of how to use VNC to share screens or grant remote control of your machine over the internet by using VNC or one of the web-based "go to my pc" type services. If two computers are connected to a router (i.e. standard home network), is there an easier way of viewing and controlling one computer from the other? I'd like to avoid going outside the LAN, onto the internet, then back in if possible. Both machines are Windows XP, but I'm not looking for Remote Desktop by the way.

  I have a bunch of home movies that don't have useful filenames because they came straight off the camera. (I'm using Vista 64, by the way.) Picasa is pretty good for browsing through them and watching them, but it doesn't use my video card for rendering the videos. My CPU gets pegged at max usage, and full screen barely works. Windows Media Player or Quicktime works fine. Is there another application (like Picasa) that can be used for browsing through movies that both uses my video card and shows thumbnails of all the movies in my collection? I'd rather have something nicer than Windows Explorer. (The movies are h.264 AAC 1280x720.)

  I'm trying to open a text file for reading in a Delphi 7 app, but am getting I/O error 32 (sharing violation) because another application already has the file open. I've tried setting FileMode to "fmOpenRead or fmShareDenyNone" but now realise this doesn't apply to text files anyway. • How can I set up an FTP user with a home directory inside another user's home folder?

  Hi I have an Ubuntu (Hardy) server which I am using to host multiple websites. All of the sites are stored in subfolders of a public_html folder for my main login to the server and accessed via a single SSH account. I now have a website user who wants FTP (or similar) access to enable them to upload various files etc to the directory where their website is situated, however I still need the SSH account to have access to this directory as I may need to make changes using my master account. Basically I want to create an FTP account (I have VSFTPD installed) for a user with the home directory inside my own user account but they should only be able to read/write to this folder or its subfolders but not go further up the directory tree. How can I achieve this? Thanks

• Setting up Multiple Routers (as Hardware Firewalls) behind a Home Router

  I’ve currently got one computer behind a router with built-in firewall functionality, connected to a home cable-modem that has a single Ethernet port and one IP. I’m going to have to set up another computer for the rest of the family to use which of course will need to be connected to the Internet, probably wirelessly since the modem is in my room and the new system would not be. What I would like to do is to get two more small routers with firewall capability and connect each computer to a router, which would in turn connect to the main router which connects to the cable-modem. That way, both systems have a hardware firewall protecting them (particularly the wireless system) and the burden of blocking would be reduced on both the computer CPUs and the main router because the secondary routers would handle some of the workload. I’m trying to find out about the complexities inherent in this design and how I could set it up to work, specifically the IP handling and NAT aspect. Thanks a lot.

  Hi, I have a Windows Vista Home laptop from a client that is running on 1GB ram. The laptop is used for super basic things, word, internet, outlook, etc. What makes zero sense is that the RAM is being completely consumed, causing the PC to hang sometimes when it can't take it anymore. However, in task manager, the processes appear to only be consuming maybe 100MB (Private Working Set). The client literally has a simple setup, and is running kaspersky, though that does not seem to be indicating it is the cause of the excessive memory usage. Does anyone have a suggestion on how to resolve the memory issue or how to track down what is actually happening and fix it? G

  Is it possible for two different Grails project, also having different domains, to share a session/cookie? Let's say I have 2 sites: www.mycompany.com, and, www.othercompany.com. Assume that both sites are having same domains, and same database and records too. What I want to know is if this code: authenticateService.userDomain() or even the authenticateService.isLoggedIn() will behave and return exactly the same object/result whether it is called in either of the site. Basically, what we need is a solution for sharing/identifying logged in user between two different sites. Need more details on how to implement this using acegi 0.5.2 and grails 1.2.1.   Hi, Is it possible to run an email server on my home box using dynamic dns? The scenario is, I want to auto cc all incoming and outgoing emails from my one account to another, from some server side config instead of configuring email clients for rules. I have tried Google Apps Mail but it doesn't allow auto cc of outgoing emails. After having read tons of blogs, forum messages etc (hope I have been reading the correct info :) ) the only option to achieve what I am needing is to setup my own mail server, but the cost of getting a static IP doesn't fit my budget. • Sharing state/changes across ViewModels

  I have an App which has a Tasks tab and a Projects tab. I decided to make a separate ViewModel for each of the tabs, TasksViewModel and ProjectsViewModel. The Tasks tab has a new task area with an associated project pulldown and the Projects tab (obviously) has a list of projects. What I'd like is for the pulldown on the Tasks tab to share the same collection as the Projects tab list so that any time I add or remove a project on the Projects tab the list on the Tasks tab is up to date automatically. This worked well with a single ViewModel but it was beginning to become quite unruly. Should I not have split into two ViewModels? Is there a common method of sharing data like this? Perhaps pass the same ObservableCollection<Project> into each of the ViewModels? Perhaps some type of notification back to the TasksViewModel along the lines of ICollectionChanged. Appreciate any insight/input!

• Installer can't create shortcuts - Vista Home Premium

  Suddenly, whenever I try to install something new on my system, all goes well until it gets to the point of creating Start Menu icons. At this point, I get an alert saying that the installer doesn't have permission to access the Start Menu folder, and my only options are Ignore, which just keeps triggering the same alert, and Cancel, which totally undoes the installation. I've tried disabling UAC (which is a feature I detest anyway), and running the installer as administrator from a R-click. Neither works. I also have 8 subfolders under my c:\users folder with various names, som of which I can look into and some which I cant. I have no idea where all this stuff came from, since I have a personal PC for home use and nobody uses it but me. Any suggestions, anyone? Thanx, T.E.Ponta

• Delete file after sharing via intent.

  I'm trying to delete a temporary file after sharing it via android's Intent.ACTION_SEND feature. Right now I am starting the activity for a result and in OnActivityResult, I am deleting the file. Unfortunately this only works if I am debugging it with a breakpoint, but when I let it run freely and say, email the file, the email has no attachment. I think what is happening is my activity is deleting the file before it had been emailed. What I don't get is why, shouldn't onActivityResult only be called AFTER the other activity is finished? I have also tried deleting the file in onResume, but no luck. Is there a better way to do this?

  Hi, I have a sony vaio laptop(VGN-FW31J) running windows Vista Home Premium . I've had it over a year and file upload in a browser has never worked on any website in any browser(IE, Firefox, Chrome). I can select a file and the upload starts running but I always get a timeout. Sometimes it has worked once out of many attempts but only if the file is very small( < 50k). FTP does work. I've tried the following: Disabling anti virus Disabling firewall Can anyone help me here? i'm wondering if this is a vista problem or a vaio problem. Cheers

• Ultimate way to use Picasa in a home network

  I've been trying a lot of approaches but still didn't find any effective solution. I want gigs of photos in a network drive (a IOMega Home Media Network Drive, plugged to my wifi router). I'd like to do 2 things: Do a Picasa import process of all the photos in the drive, making Picasa organize all the files in a year/month folder structure physically. Ideally, the import target directory should be the same network drive, otherwise I should move all the imported files in my local computer back to the drive myself. Share the Picasa database over the network, by uploading it to the network drive. Have me and other members of the family point our Picasas to the network database, and see the photos as well as make changes (tag faces, create logical albums, etc) into it. Is ANY possibility to accomplish this? Or should I be looking for another photo management app, and in that case do you know such one? Thank you!

• Jail user to home directory while still allowing permission to create and delete files/folders

  I'm trying to give a client SFTP access to the root directory of their site on my server (Ubuntu 10.10) so they can manager their website themselves. While I have been successful in jailing a user to a directory and giving them SFTP access; they are only allowed to create and delete new files in sub directories (the directories they own). This means that I must give them access to the parent directory to the root of their site. How can I limit them to the root of their site (for example public_html) while still allowing them the ability create and delete files. All the tutorials I have read suggest that the root must be the owner of the user's home directory, which prevents them from write access inside that directory. I'm relatively new to managing my own server so any advice would be very grateful. Many thanks.

I am thinking of following setup if thats [possible because i have not worked with biger companies , so i want to know how can i do that I am thinking of creating 5 virtual machines VM1 will be database server and will have all databases like MySQL , postgreSQL , sqlite , mongodb and Oracle VM2 will be the web server and will have Apache and Tomcat installed VM3 will be the Filse server where i will have all the web sites file VM4 , i am thinking of as main box where i can install ptyon php java j2ee sites but not sure VM5 will have the server 22008 for c# .net applications my main idea is to be able to host the sites in php, python , java j2ee with spring Is my setup ok or i am missing few things. • Hooking domain to home server (WinServer2008) with specific port

  Alright, I'm asking two things here. First of all, if i purchase a domain let's say myhomeserver.com, am I able to make the default port go through a different port instead of the default port 80? (that is without having to do myhomeserver.com:5000 for example). Also this should be without blocking other ports (so no stealth forwarding to myhomeserver.com:5000 i think) Secondly, How could I go about hooking a domain to a windows 2008 server? I've seen it on linux but no clue how to do it on windows if it's even possible. I know I'm asking a lot here, just some tips are appereciated. • Acer Aspire 7750-6801 windows 7 Home Premium x64 not charging properly [closed]

  I have an Acer Aspire 7750-6801 laptop running Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit OS. The issue is that it will only charge sometimes when plugged in. I thought it might be a hardware issue, so I tried charging with the laptop off, and it works fine. Also when in Linux, or any other environment other than Windows, it also charges fine. The intermittent charging issue ONLY presents itself when in Windows. I've tried the following: Open Device Manager Under 'Batteries->', I uninstalled 'Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery' Then re-installed using 'Scan for hardware changes' Still no luck. It's quite urgent, any help would be appreciated as I am totally at a loss...

• Mapping Ctrl+Arrow for Home/End/PageUp/Down

  I'm using Windows 7 on Dell New Inspiron 14z Ultrabook. It doesn't have Home/End/PgUp/PgDn keys. Instead I have to use Fn + arrow keys. Can I re-map those to Ctrl + arrows or Alt + arrows or Shift + arrows? That way I could go one page up and down with only my right hands rather than with the left hand on the Fn key and right hand on arrow key. Also, volume up and down is assigned to FnF11 and FnF12. Can I re-map them to F11 and F12? Existing functions assigned to F11 and F12 will be replaced by FnF11 and FnF12. Is it possible?
