• How to fix Xubuntu LightDM Theme after installing unity.

  After successfully installing Xubuntu 12.04.1 on my laptop, I decided to install Unity. That went OK but then I realized there was no themes. So then I installed the themes and artwork, and got a really bad surprise. My lightDM greeter was still Xubuntu like I wanted but the buttons where you choose the user are really tall and I have a purple computer as the icon above my computer name. How do I get back to the original Xubuntu configuration or edit the CSS while keeping Unity? I know where all of the files are but don't know which file to edit or which CSS property to modify. • Thinktecture IdentityServer Azure Edition RC

  I found some time over the holidays to finalize the Azure edition of IdentityServer. http://identityserver.codeplex.com/releases/view/81206 The biggest difference to the on-premise version (and earlier Azure betas) is, that by default IdSrv now uses Azure Storage for all data storage (configuration & user data). This means that there is no need anymore for SQL Azure (which is still supported out of the box – just not the default anymore). The download includes a readme file with setup instructions. In a nutshell: Create a new hosted service and upload your certificates Modify the service configuration file in the download to your needs (signing cert, connection strings to storage…) Deploy the package via the portal or other tools Use the new Powershell scripts to add users If you encounter any problem, please give me feedback.

• I have a library and several small programs that use it: how should I structure my git repositories?

  I have some code that uses a library that I and others frequently modify (usually only by adding functions and methods). We each keep a local fork of the library for our own use. I also have a lot of small "driver" programs (~100 lines) that use the library and are used exclusively by me. Currently, I have both the driver programs and the library in the same repository, because I frequently make changes to both that are logically connected (adding a function to the library and then calling it). I'd like to merge my fork of the library with my co-workers' forks, but I don't want the driver programs to be part of the merged library. What's the best way to organize the git repositories for a large, shared library that needs to be merged frequently and a number of small programs that have changes that are connected to changes in the library?

• Is it illegal to use content in such a way?

  I have a couple of questions about the legality of the content of some websites. I am currently working on two websites and I would like to make sure I am not breaking any laws, by using some content like I am... Do I need to get a license to use images from the Internet (such as google.images.com) in my site, assuming they aren't a company logo belonging to another company? If not, am I allowed to use it after I modify it with a image editing software? If content such as phone numbers, e-mail addresses, website addresses, and text from websites can be found for free online, and I gather this information for a search engine based site that I am working on and offering this information on a paid basis (similar to google, but more specialized), is something that is legal? Note: I am not 'copying' or redirecting business from anywhere, to my site. The exact opposite, the site I am working on actually helps advertise businesses and make it easier for customers to find them.

• How do I create a new usergroup?

  I want to do this because I'm trying to fix user permissions from Ubuntu on my Mac OS X partition and Ubuntu doesn't have the "wheel" group that I so desperately need! Please don't trash me for this but I set my whole Mac OS X partition to give read and write access to everyone so I could access and modify everything on it from my dual-booting Ubuntu OS, and now everything is screwed... I don't have the original Mac OS X installation DVD and booting a Mac OS X 10.5.6 DVD gives me kernel panics... The OS installed on that Mac partition is 10.4.11. Is there any hope for me to ever fix it? I don't have money to buy utilities, and I can't use AppleJack either because my permissions are so messed up... None of the posted answers are what I wanted to do. I wanted to add fields to a user that was on my Mac partition, not a user part of the Ubuntu groups. Is that possible?

As far as I know, I can install the ATI drivers through the Additional drivers When I press 'Activate' in the FGLRX graphic propietary control ATI/AMD it comes up with an error.   I am facing an issue with brightness control in my laptop which has Intel HD graphics. So when I searched for a fix I found that a common suggestion is to edit the GRUB file line, GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash" to GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash acpi_osi=Linux acpi_backlight=vendor" So could anyone tell me what the kernel boot option acpi_osi=Linux do? My OS is Ubuntu 10.10 64-bit version update The boot parameter acpi_osi is used as follows, acpi_osi= [HW,ACPI] Modify list of supported OS interface strings acpi_osi="string1" # add string1 -- only one string acpi_osi="!string2" # remove built-in string2 acpi_osi= # disable all strings But still I don't find a reason why this should fix any laptop issue!!

• Transferring local site to shared hosting

  I'm looking to setup a simple online text processing tool similar to the Clang demo. The processing program itself is a C++ program which I can modify to provide the desired output I need. Since I use Linux+Perl daily and have used Apache in the past, I'd like to get this working locally first. My two questions are: Is it possible to do this with only Apache and Perl? I've looked into frameworks for doing this and quickly ran into The Paradox Of Choice. Will I be able to easily transfer a working local site to a shared hosting service? I want to administer as little as possible. My understanding is since this needs to run a C++ program that CGI is a requirement and thus I need to administer the httpd server. Hopefully this doesn't mean a VPS. Thanks

• Ubuntu 11.10 momentarily freezes every couple minutes

  I'm working on an Acer Aspire One D257 running Ubuntu 11.10, and every few minutes the laptop freezes up for a second or two, before becoming responsive again. This doesn't really present a huge problem, but when I'm trying to code all of a sudden vim stops responding for a couple seconds while I'm trying to modify my code, it's increasingly frustrating. The odd part is, if I play a movie in VLC at the same time, when vim pauses the video keeps playing just fine (VLC's priority is not modified). I'm wondering if anyone knows why this may be happening, or in lieu of that, how I might be able to track down the source of my frustrating pauses. Normally I would try using top, but the pauses are shorter than 2 seconds so nothing unusual shows up in top as consuming the CPU. Does anyone know how to troubleshoot intermittent repeating 1 second long pauses in vim?

  I am probably missing something obvious, but I do not understand when I query: start.date = DATE_START, end.date = DATE_END, dimensions = c("ga:pagePath","ga:previousPagePath"), metrics = c("ga:pageviews"), filters = mypageofinterest, table.id = "ga:mytable", max.results=RESULTS my data return as expected, all of the previous pages including (entrance). However, when I modify the code to be nextPagePath start.date = DATE_START, end.date = DATE_END, dimensions = c("ga:pagePath","ga:nextPagePath"), metrics = c("ga:pageviews"), filters = mypageofinterest, table.id = "ga:mytable", max.results=RESULTS only one line of data are returned; the pagepath and nextpagepath are identical with itself. I replicated this result using the Query Explorer. What am I missing or doing wrong? I was expecting to see a large number of "next" pages, including (exit). Thanks in advance.

• Restart Trouble Ubuntu 12.10

  I`ve installed Ubuntu 12.10 on 3 different machines: Acer AspireOne Netbook Lenovo T60 Notebook Desktop - P5P77 - Asus mainboard - I3 - porcessor I have the same issue on all of themm they won`t restart (Shut Down work), I can see the proceses are killed but it freezez on black screen total iresponsive. Even when I access the bios config to modify something then Save&Exit then restart I get the same thing. This is the same for all 3 machines. I also cleaned up the desktop system, last version of bios update, full HDD format, fresh win7 installed (practicly no trace of the old Ubuntu 12.10) still the same problem. Some time ago I had Ubuntu 11.10 on the desktop system, it worked perfectly. I also mention that I tried all combinations of ACPI settings in BIOS, unfortunately with no results. Please advice, I am a little desperate :)) Best regards, Cristian, Romania

• Quickly Application making it run on startup

  I have a PyGtk application that I made using Quickly, and I would like to have it run on startup when installed. How would I go about doing this? I'm not sure if sticking the .desktop file in ~/.config/autostart/ would make it work or not. If that will fix it, I don't know how to add it to that folder since Quickly packages the project for you and has it's own installation script. Is it possible to modify what it does on installation? If possible, I would also like to add the program in the System Settings Personal tab, but I do not know how to do that. Thanks

• Procedural object generation and unique identification

  My question relates to procedural content generation and data management of the emerging objects in a database. I assume a networked game, with a server-client model. Unspecified objects in the game world are generated while the game is running with procedural algorithms (for example perlin noise). The players (/clients) can modify the properties of these objects, but have to notify the server of these changes. How could this communication address unique objects, so that both the server and the client know of which object they are speaking? Not only the inner properties of the objects can differ, but also visible, such as the position. When the player wants to select one of these objects the game has to find out the id - does anyone know which methods or algorithms can accomplish that?

  JSR 355, JCP Executive Committee Merge, is currently nearing the end of the Public Review period.  Review the current draft here and provide feedback here.  The review closes on 12 June 2012.  The JCP Executive Committee met face to face in Sao Paulo, Brazil earlier in May, and has published a revision (version 2.1) of the EC Standing Rules.  The EC Standing Rules were introduced in October 2011 with the launch of JCP version 2.8 (JSR 348).  Version 2.1 of the EC Standing Rules will modify rules for attendance at EC face-to-face meetings. Remote observers will be permitted in "read-only" mode but unless a member attends in person they will be counted as absent.  The review period for these changes will close on June 30 2012.  Please comment on the proposed changes by logging an issue in the JCP EC issue tracker.

• Ubuntu 12.10 Help! Everything is incredibly slow

  I installed 12.10 from usb onto this machine. Intel celeron 2.00 GHz 496MB RAM I had to modify GNU-Grub to read "nomodeset" or i could not see the GUI. I have an Nvidia graphics card. Takes about 2 minutes to boot. The icons on the left of desktop take about 1 min to slowly open their menu. Have a network connection but mozilla is 404 and i cannot update. Where can i find a blow by blow explanation for troubleshooting and repairing this problem?

  Something I really have not thought about before (AS3 syntax): private var m_obj:Object; protected function get obj():Object { return m_obj; } private var m_str:String; protected function get str():String { return m_str; } At least subclasses won't be able to set m_obj or m_str (though they could still modify m_obj). Is this just blatant overkill? I am not talking about doing this as opposed to making them public. I am talking about doing this instead of just making the variables themselves protected. In Studio, duplicate the agent, change its name to genAgent, change the web application context to genagent. 2: Go to datasource of genAgent, drop all datasources.3: Generate server template. put the jar file under odi\common\templates\wls 4: Deploy this template by update the existing domain. Bring up the config.cmd, choose update existing domain. 5: Update the domain using the template that just generated. Go through the Configuration wizard. (I did not modify anything or configure anything here). 6: The wizard will give information says the deployment was successful. 7: Bring up the admin server and ODI_server1.

• sell applications that run only on a GPL v2 Server

  I have been testing Pentaho BI server community edition, and after reading their licensing terms I found out that the community edition is under GPLv2. As you may know the server is intended to host different types of files and applications (like reports, olap cubes,etc...) My question is : are we allowed to sell applications that run on the GPLv2 server ? (we will maybe modify the server source code a bit but we won't charge it to our clients. thus the modified GPL server will be just an execution environment or a container for the reports and applications that we intend to sell) ? this suggests that our clients must install the GPL v2 edition first and then buy from us the reports that work on it but not their source code. • How should I write new code when the old codebase and the environment uses lots of globals in PHP

  I'm working in the Wordpress environment which itself heavily relies on globals and the codebase I'm maintaining introduces some more. I want this to change and so I'm trying to think how should I handle this. For the globals our code has introduced I think I will set them as dependencies in the constructor or in getter / setter so that I don't rely on them being globals and then refactor the old codebase little by little so that we have no globals. With Wordpress globals I was thinking to wrap all WP globals inside a Wrapper class and hide them in there. Like this class WpGlobals { public static function getDb() { global $wpdb; return $wpdb; } } Would this be of any help? The idea is that I centralize all globals in one class and do not scatter them through the code, so that if Wordpress kills one of them I need to modify code only in one place. What would you do?

• NDIS Driver Filter VS API Hooking

  I've seen many developers asking for "How to intercept in/out HTTP packets ", "How to modify them on the fly". The most "clean" answer I've seen is to make a kernel-mode-driver filter from the scratch (TDI for XP and earlier winx9 or NDIS for NT systems). An other way, is to use a user-mode-driver like Windivert, also Komodia has a great solution (without writing any single code). The idea behind this introduction is just I want to know is API Hooking can be considered as alternative of writing of whole of driver-filter? writing a driver from the scratch is not an easy task, why just not Hooking the HttpSendRequest or any other API used by the browser? There are many free/commercial libraries to do this in a safe manner (eg: EasyHook, Mhook, Nektra..). I'm not the first who ask, there already Sockscap that uses Hook(DLL injection) to change behavior to other applications and force them to use a Socks proxy, also Form grabbing attack 'used by keylogger..

• How can I instruct nautilus to pre-generate thumbnails?

  I have a large library of PDF documents (papers, lectures, handouts) that I want to be able to quickly navigate through. For that I need thumbnails. At the same time however, I see that the ~/.thumbnails folder is piling up with thumbs I don't really need. Deleting thumbnail junk without removing the important thumbs is impossible. If I were to delete them, I'd have to go to each and every folder with important PDF documents and let the thumbnail cache regenerate. I would love to able to automate this process. Is there any way I can tell nautilus to pre-cache the thumbs for a set of given directories? Note: I did find a set of bash scripts that appear to do this for pictures and videos, but not for any other documents. Maybe someone more experienced with scripting might be able to adjust these for PDF documents or at least point me in the right direction on what I'd have to modify for this to work with PDF documents as well.
