• problems with graphic performance in Ubuntu 12.04

  in advance: my English is not perfect ;) processor: Intel® Core™2 Duo CPU E8500 @ 3.16GHz × 2 memory: 3,9 GiB graphics: GeForce GTX 460 Ubuntu 12.04 32-Bit fresh installed (previously 11.10 32-Bit) driver: NVIDIAs accelerated Driver (Version current-updates) probelm: In Ubuntu 12.04 I have problems with the performance of the graphics (games for example: Volley Brwawl, Neverball, Beep and Minecraft), and effects of windows (always at minimize, maximize...) There are laggs at animations, and the laggs in games are extremely annoying. Problems occur only in Ubuntu 12.04, everything was good in 11.10. No Problems with YouTube videos, HD videos. Is there a solution? BBecause I have found nothing here in the Forum and on Google. Or is an update coming soonfor driver or whatever? (This Bug is already registered in Launchpad.) Thank you!

• How can I get my mysqld-swamped CPU under control?

  I was AFK for about 24 hours and came back to find gnome-system-monitor saying all four CPU cores on my laptop were running at full throttle. mysqld is taking up more than one full core; when I tried to end the process, it restarted with a new PID. Then there's ksoftirqd/0-3, which apparently has something to do with interrupts, but I can't tell from Google what I'm supposed to do with those four particular processes. They're taking up a quarter or more of my processor cycles. Then there's Chrome, but I can probably handle that on my own -- how do I cool down the other processes giving me problems?

  As I'm quite newbie to this field, I've doubts and there are some I couldn't find on Google, i.e: If I'm not wrong, index.html makes it possible to avoid to add the filename to the url, www.example.com/ is equal to www.example.com/index.html. And that works for the following subdirectories, right? www.example.com/music/ Is there any other way to achieve this without using an index.html file? (I've read smth about converting dynamic urls to static: ./?var1=value1&varN=valueN - ./value1/valueN) How can I convert www.example.com/music/ to music.example.com/ and why should it be used? • Update to Grub2.x broke Xubuntu 12.04 client in VirtualBox

  I have VirtualBox-4.1 installed in Ubuntu 10.04 with a .vdi running Xubuntu 12.04. Recently, a Grub update for Xubuntu 12.04 to Grub2.x, broke it with the following explanation: error: ELF header smaller than expected grub rescue _ Is there an easy fix for this? I could reinstall, but I tweaked Xubuntu 12.04 to my liking, and don't want to re-install a new .vdi. Unfortunately, I didn't make a snapshot of it. Google results, have been over my head. Thanks.

Either you do a quick Google search, pull together the most popular frameworks and libraries and work your way from their tutorials towards what you want to achieve (top-down). Or you start with the language basics and the standard library and by and by replace your own simple components with more sophisticated third-party components once you know what you're searching for (bottom-up). Now I'm about to embark on my first serious Javascript project. There's probably as much to know about the language as there is about jQuery, ExtJS and whathaveyou, and I'm trying to decide what to focus on.

  On the html5shiv Google Code page the example usage includes an IE conditional: <!--[if lt IE 9]> <script src="dist/html5shiv.js"></script> <![endif]--> However on the html5shiv github page, the description explains: This script is the defacto way to enable use of HTML5 sectioning elements in legacy Internet Explorer, as well as default HTML5 styling in Internet Explorer 6 - 9, Safari 4.x (and iPhone 3.x), and Firefox 3.x. An obvious contradiction. So to satisfy my curiosity, for anyone who has studied the code, are there any adverse side affects to loading html5shiv in every browser (without the IE conditional)? EDIT: My goal, obviously, is to use the shiv without the IE conditional.

• Compiz window decorator randomly disappears

Often a 'filter' feature is implemented as a set of include or exclude rules. For example: include all emails from [email protected], and exclude those emails without attachments I've seen this include/exclude pattern often; for example Maven and Google Analytics filter things this way. But now that I'm implementing something like this myself, I don't know what to call something that could be either included or excluded. In specific terms: If I have a database table of filter rules, each of which either includes or excludes matching items, what is an appropriate name of the field that stores include or exclude? When displaying a list of filters to a user, what is a good way to label the include or exclude value? (as a bonus, can anyone recommend a good implementation of this kind of filtering for inspiration?)

• Do employers hiring for software jobs care about the classes you took in a Computer Science Masters program?

  I'm torn between two classes right now for next semester (Software Design and Advanced Computer Graphics). I would enjoy Advanced Computer Graphics more, but I feel the software design class would help me when approaching anything I ever build for the rest of my career. I feel though I could just buy the book (I already have both books actually) of the Software Design class and go through it, if I wanted. But think it would be a bit tougher to pick up the Advanced Computer Graphics class on my own. So do employers look at the graduate classes you've taken to decide if you would be a good fit or not? I think, more importantly, what I'm wanting to know is if I wanted to work for a high-end software company like Apple or Google would a company like that be more impressed by someone that took software engineering classes or hardcore CS classes?

• Recommendations for a quick and easy discussion forum installation

  Hello. I did a couple quick searches on this topic and both Google and this site yielded poor results, but I was wondering what's the quickest way to setup a discussion forum on my website. Preferably one that has a decent Admin dashboard. My website is very static (e.g. it has one index.html, a stylesheet, and a javascript) and it will most likely be hosted on GoDaddy.com. The last time I installed a discussion forum was six years ago and it was phpBB. I'm sure that's still an option, but I'm (hoping) wondering if there are better, free, and as-easy alternatives to phpBB. Thanks for your wisdom!

  I was thinking about developing a small community website where people of a certain profession can register and post their own blogs (Which includes an optional photo). I then got to thinking about how people might use this and the fact that if they are given the option to add a photo, they might be likely to use one that they simply find on Google, another social network or even an existing online blog/magazine article. So how do I cover myself from getting a fine slapped on me and to make it purely the fault of the individual uploader? I plan on having an option where the user can credit a photo by typing in the original photographers name & web link (optional) and to make them tick a check box stating that the post is their own content and that they have permission to use any images but is that enough to cover myself? How do other sites do it?

  I've been asked to find out "what's out there" when it comes to workflow engines. We have projects where a workflow based development environment makes sense. I've looked a little into jBPM but it seemed to have a steep learning curve. Google seems to take me to commercial products or products that I think are open source but instead have very limited "community editions". I could simply be searching for the wrong terms.   Whats a best practice for creating websites do to the fact that i need to enter "ö" within the content/title/meta. Should I spell it without, and just use a "normal" character or do i put in this code everywhere. or do i spell it half the time with and half the time without. whats the best practice for seo? Google takes into account user intent. Which makes things complicated(in my mind). The user will be searching without the "special characters" but because of the whole "user intent" thing, I don't know the best practice for this situation is. Should I use a mix of both spellings? Should I use the special characters in anchortext/headers/title/metadescription?

  I am familiar with the C++ programming language, and I have been using it for some time now. Recently, I have been applying for C++ Software Development/Engineering jobs, but I feel like there is still so much I need to learn. When first-class companies, such as Google, hire a software programmer, they obviously put them through some initial training. How/Where can I find a similar source of training material/source that would prepare me for commercial/industrial programming in C++? I know there is millions of good tutorials on line, but I would rather work through something different. I actually don't know how an organization training courses in software development would be different to text books. Has anyone been in the same boat - feeling under-confident at the employment stage and then realizing they shouldn't have been?

• client website compromised, found a strange .php file. any ideas?

  I do support work for a web development company and I found a suspicious file today on the website of one of our clients called "hope.php" which contained several eval(gzuncompress(base64_decode('....'))) commands (which on a site like this, usually indicates that they've been hacked). Searching for the compromised site on google, we got a bunch of results which link to hope.php with various query strings that seem to generate different groups of seo terms like so: (the second result from the top is legitimate, all the rest are not) Here is the source of "hope.php": http://pastebin.com/7Ss4NjfA And here is the decoded version I got by replacing the eval()s with echo(): http://pastebin.com/m31Ys7q5 Any ideas where this came from or what it is doing? • Migrate from Thunderbird to Mutt

  I am contemplating moving from Thunderbird to Mutt (provided it is feasible) to move to a faster, simpler application. My current Thunderbird set-up consists of multiple IMAP accounts (gmail and google apps). Only selected folders (read labels) in each IMAP account are stored locally. For all other folders, I glance through the headers and open a message only if I find it interesting. I also use folder bookmarks to navigate to folders quickly. I also move messages across folders with keyboard shortcuts. Is it possible to replicate the set-up in Mutt? Can someone share/ point to a sample muttrc file that does the same thing? It would be great if the muttrc file is adequately commented. On a side note, will it also be possible to import my messages from Thunderbird locally? That will save me considerable network traffic (about 2GB data stored locally).

We are in the same time zone, but definitely remote. I have not met the team yet, but will be flying up there soon. What is your best advice for integrating and developing with this team? What are the most important priorities? • Images from remote source - is it possible or is it bad practice?

  I'm building a management system for websites and I had an idea related to image galleries. I'm not sure it's a good approach. Since image space needed is related to how many images a user might upload, I thought about using cloud services like DropBox, Mega, and Google Drive to store images and load then when needed. The obvious problem with this approach is that downloading the images from the 3rd party service would hamper the user experience due to the increased download times. Is there any way to save images belonging in an image gallery on remote source without hampering the user experience because of speed? Or is this approach really not a good practice?

• Gnome extensions don't work! I've tried everything!

  When I go to https://extensions.gnome.org/, and try to install an extension, it clicks on, but nothing happens to my shell. Then, when I reload the page, the slider has turned off. Here are the things I have tried: I tried Chrome, Firefox, and Opera adding http://extensions.gnome.org to my allow plugin list in google chrome and made sure gnome-intigration is enabled I made a new firefox profile and tried installing it I reset my gnome shell settings (How do I reset GNOME to the defaults?) - this link actually broke my system, as now I can't log in to any desktop environment, the only way I can get to Unity, is by logging in to another desktop environment like cinnimon (which doesn't work) , then immediately logging into unity. Whenever I try to just log into unity or pretty much any other desktop environment, it logs in, but then seems to crash, and log out. Sometimes I even get quick glances of the Unity bar before it crashes I tried-re installing gnome None of these methods worked!! Thank you in advance!!

• robots.txt, how effective is it and how long does it take?

  We recently updated the site to a single page site using jQuery to slide between "pages". So we now have only index.php. When you search the company on engines such as Google, you get the site and a listing of its sub pages which now lead to outdated pages. Our plan doesn't allow us to edit the .htaccess and the old pages are .html docs so I cannot use PHP redirects either. So if I put in place a robots.txt telling the engines to not crawl beyond index.php, how effective will this be in preventing/removing crawled sub pages. And rough guess, how long before the search engines would update?
