• Transfer files using java

  I need to transfer lots of small files to a remote computer within my java program. I was wondering if somebody could suggest the best way to do so... I need to transfer lots of small files and it has to be really fast. Should I use some existing protocol implementation? maybe ftp? One important thing is that most files would be the same all the time, or the difference would be minor so I was thinking of using git for that purpose. Does anyone have experience with sth like this?

• Different NSTimeZone names being returned

  I've noticed that on some devices the NSTimeZone's name method for a particular timezone can return different values. When testing the Brisbane time zone, my device returns @"Australia/Brisbane" whereas another user's device returns "Etc/GMT-10". Both iPhone's are running 3.1.2. The Date and Time Programming Guide for Cocoa states that: timeZoneWithName: The name passed to this method may be in any of the formats understood by the system, for example EST, Etc/GMT-2, America/Argentina/Buenos_Aires, Europe/Monaco, or US/Pacific, as shown in the following code fragment. I'd just like to know what could determine which value is used? The device? The language?

• Scala: Can I nudge a combinator parser to be locally greedy?

  Suppose I have an ambiguous language expressed in combinator parser. Is there a way to make certain expressions locally greedy? • Someone is using the struct name as a variable name too. What does the code really say? (c++)

  This morning we found an old chunk of code that was causing a library call to crash. struct fred { int a; int b; int c; }; fred fred[MAX_SIZE+1]; memset( fred, 0, sizeof(fred) * MAX_SIZE+1 ); It appears that the sizeof(fred) may have been the full array size, rather than the structure size, as it was overwriting a great deal of memory. The fact that it compiled without warning on several different systems seemed odd. Is there a correct semantic for this case where the type and variable name are colliding? or is this some sort of undefined behavior? or just a defect? I haven't been been clever enough to find anything on Google or our language help. Thanks Evil

  I'm having a problem using TinyMCE. In IE8, the forecolor and backcolor, for some random reason, is displayed twice. See picture below.   My current App is written in Python on GAE which can do Contacts management, Genealogy, Social Networking, Photo sharing, Telecom Integration (SMS, iVRS, URL Billing), CRON and performs business logic operations for our Mobile Apps. Current Architecture indlues python, django, jquery, memcache and few telecom APIs. Now, It feels that an SOA Architecture on GAE using Java would be really ideal and scalable for this kind of App where we want to build new features like widgets that users can turn on or off and third party developers can also develop and deploy features. Please correct me or improve the following design decision: UI (Current plan is GWT) Sessions, Security and ACL (Spring MVC 2.x) Reusable Business Logic components (?) Implementation of Web Services (?) Your advice would really help.

  The method DotNetOpenAuth.OpenId.RelyingParty.IAuthenticationRequest.RedirectToProvider() is documented never to return: Redirects the user agent to the provider for authentication. Execution of the current page terminates after this call. However, it does return under the latest implementation (3.4.3). • Weird generics compile error.

  I have two classes, a base class and a child class. In the base class i define a generic virtual method: protected virtual Bar Foo<T() where T : Bar {} Then in my child class i try to do this: protected override BarChild Foo() // BarChild inherits Bar { return base.Bar<T as BarChild() } Visual studio gives this weird error: The type 'T' cannot be used as type parameter 'T' in the generic type or method 'Foo()'. There is no boxing conversion or type parameter conversion from 'T' to 'Bar'. Repeating the where clause on the child's override also gives an error: Constraints for override and explicit interface implementation methods are inherited from the base method, so they cannot be specified directly So what am i doing wrong here?

• Using one LINQ statement with different parameters

  I have a pretty complex linq statement I need to access for different methods. Each of these methods may need to see the resulting data with different parameters. For one method it may be a project code, for another it may be language. The statement is pretty much the same it's just the where part which changes. I have not been able to figure out how to use different where statements without duplicating the entire linq statement, and that just isn't dry enough for me. For example (greatly simplified): var r = from c in customer where c.name == "some name" // or it may be var r = from c in customer where c.customerId == 8 Is there a way to have both of these in the same statement so I can use one or the other based on what I am doing? I tried an if statement to use one of the where statements or the other, and that didn't go over very well.

• How to use Netbeans platform syntax highlight with JEditorPane?

  There are many tutorials online giving very complex or non-working examples on this. It seems that people recommend others to use the syntax highlighters offered by netbeans but I am totally puzzled on how to do so! I have checked many many sites on this and the best I can find is : http://www.antonioshome.net/kitchen/netbeans/nbms-standalone.php However I am still not able to use this example (as it is aimed to people who don't want to use the Netbeans platform but just a portion of it) and I am still not sure if I can just use syntax highlighting in a simple plug 'n play way. For example netbeans supports several language highlights by default, can I just use the highlighters in a JEditorPane to parse Ruby/Python/Java for example ? or do I need to write my own parser :-| ? I will really appreciate a small simple example on how to plug syntax highlight in a standalone application using the netbeans platform.

  We have a system with multiple different levels of access--sometimes even for the same user as they switch between multiple roles. We're beginning a discussion on moving over to a RESTful implementation of things. I'm just starting to get my feet wet with the whole REST thing. So how do I go about limiting access to the correct records when they access a resource, particularly when taking caching into consideration? If user A access example.com/employees they would receive a different response than user B; user A may even receive a different response as he switches to a different role. To help facilitate caching, should the id of the role be somehow incorporated into the uri? Maybe something like example.com/employees/123 (which violates the rules of REST), or as some sort of subordinate resource like example.com/employees/role/123 (which seems silly, since role/### is going to be appended to URIs all over the place). I can help but think I'm missing something here.

  XCode newbie question here: If I'm programming in C++ or objective C, and I #include or #import a library; e.g. #include <iostream> #import <Cocoa/Cocoa.h> I'm often not sure where to look for these header files in the directory structure on my Mac. In other development environments, you can right click the included or imported filename and have the option to jump to source. Is there such a feature in XCode? Also, for the standard C++ libraries and the Cocoa framework, is the source code for the implementation files available, or only the headers together with compiled link libraries? Thanks!

• writing a fast parser in python

  I've written a hands-on recursive pure python parser for a some file format (ARFF) we use in one lecture. Now running my exercise submission is awfully slow. Turns out by far the most time is spent in my parser. It's consuming a lot of CPU time, the HD is not the bottleneck. I wonder what performant ways are there to write a parser in python? I'd rather not rewrite it in C. I tried to use jython, but that decreased performance a lot! The files I parse are partially huge ( 150 MB) with very long lines. My current parser only needs a look-ahead of one character. I'd post the source here but I don't know if that's such a good idea. After all the submission deadline has not jet ended. But then, the focus in this exercise is not the parser. You can choose whatever language you want to use and there already is a parser for Java.

My company is looking to understand/spot trends based on the 'click paths' of our users. In doing so, identify groups of users that take on a certain 'click path' based on age/geography and so on. As you can tell from the title, I am completely new to BI and its capabilities so I was wondering: Are our objectives attainable? How should I go about doing this? I am currently reading books online as well as other e-books I have found. All signs seem to suggest this is possible via sequence clustering. Although the exact implementation and tweaks involved are currently lost on me. Therefore, if anyone has first hand experience in such an undertaking, I would be awesome if you could share it here. This way I can traverse the different branches of the trie and return the most relevant result. First, how do I store the data in the table as a trie? Second, how do I traverse the tree? If it helps at all, the suggestion in this previous question is where this question was sparked from. Please make sure it's SQL we're talking about. • A tool to find and fix incomplete source code documentation

  I have several finished, older PHP projects with a lot of includes that I would like to document in javadoc/phpDocumentor style. While working through each file manually and being forced to do a code review alongside the documenting would be the best thing, I am, simply out of time constraints, interested in tools to help me automate the task as much as possible. The tool I am thinking about would ideally have the following features: Parse a PHP project tree and tell me where there are undocumented files, classes, and functions/methods (i.e. elements missing the appropriate docblock comment) Provide a method to half-way easily add the missing docblocks by creating the empty structures and, ideally, opening the file in an editor (internal or external I don't care) so I can put in the description. Optional: Automatic recognition of parameter types, return values and such. But that's not really required. The language in question is PHP, though I could imagine that a C/Java tool might be able to handle PHP files after some tweaking. Thanks for your great input!

  Hi everyone. I'm starting a computer graphics course, and I have to choose a language. Choices are between C++ and Python. I have no problem with C++, python is a work in progress. So i was thinking to go down the python road, using pyopengl for graphics part. I have heard though, that performance is an issue. Is python / pyopengl mature enough to challenge C++ on performance? I googled about features of the Korn shell and learned that it supports associative arrays, so I installed Cygwin's pdksh (public domain korn shell).
