  • What programming language to choose

    We need to write a script that needs to process movies (using C-based ffmpeg) and also update our databases. Also there would be some thread programming to accomplish with a worker-manager design. I am thinking of writing this in Ruby is there any good language to do this, if so what is its primary advantage for choosing? We are based on the Mac platform. Thanks in advance.

  • Optimal setup for Doxygen in a large multi-application COM project

    A system has up to 100 VC++ projects, each spitting out a DLL or EXE. In addition there are many COM components with IDL and generated .h/.c files. What's 'the right way' or at least a good way to organise this with Doxygen? One overall doxy project or one per project/solution? And what's the right way to handle COM, which has generated code and a lot of 'fluff' that will bloat generated HTML files.

    I want to write a map/reduce job to select a number of random samples from a large dataset based on a row level condition. I want to minimize the number of intermediate keys. Pseudocode: for each row if row matches condition put the row.id in the bucket if the bucket is not already large enough Have you done something like this? Is there any well known algorithm?     Hi. I need to set datetime variable to two days from now but it's time part must be 18:00. For example if i call getdate() now i'll get 2010-05-17 13:18:07.260. I need to set it to 2010-05-19 18:00:00.000. Does anybody have a good snippet for that or any ideas how to do it right?

  • 2 column div layout: right column fixed width, left fluid, height relative to eachother

    I want a layout with two columns, two divs, where the left one has fluid width and the right one has fixed width. So far so good - see jsfiddle below - however, the height of the right column must be in relation to the height of the left column. So that if I have some content in the fluid column and would resize the browser window, thereby increasing or decreasing the height of the left column, the right one should follow and getting the same height.     I need to write a firefox extension that creates a server socket (I think that's what it's called) and returns the browser's current url when a client application (running on the same computer) sends it a request. The thing is that I have no Java/Javascript background at all and I'm pressed for time so I am trying to hack something together from code samples. So far I've been mildly successful. So far I can telnet into localhost and get a response, but my string comparison in the reader seems to fail even if I enter "foo". I don't get why. What am I missing? The sample code I'm using opens up a console window and prints output when I telnet into localhost. Ideally I would like the output to be returned as a response when the client sends a request to the server socket with a passphrase. How do I go about doing that? Is doing this a good idea? Does it create security vulnerabilities on the computer? How can I block connections to the socket from other computers? What is a good place to read about javascript sockets? My google searches have been pretty fruitless but then maybe I'm not using the right keywords.

    Greetings Overflowers, To my understanding (and I hope I'm not right) changes to indices cannot be MVCCed. I'm wondering if this is also true with big records as copies can be costly. Since records are accessed via indices (usually), how MVCC can be effective ? Do, for e.g., indices keep track of different versions of MVCCed records ? Any recent good reading on this subject ?
