    What tools and standards do you use to describe your project, database, modules, classes, their interaction for programmers, let's say after the project is finished. Do you use UML? Are there enterprise standards for Java developers, how to write such a documentation let's say from SUN? Are there specific tools that simplify this documentation process & compilation of neccessary docs. If there are good books on project documenting process, please give me links to Amazon.

  • Calling C# code from Java?

    Does anyone have a good solution for integrating some C# code into a java application? The code is small, so I could re-write in java, but I would rather reuse the code if possible. Don't repeat yourself, etc. Also, I know I can expose the C# as a web service or whatever, but it has some security/encryption stuff in there, so I would rather keep it tightly integrated if possible. Edit: It's going to be on a server-based app, so "downloading" another runtime is irrelevant.

    I'm looking for a good way to disable a JPanel. I'm using a MVC design for a Java Swing GUI. I want the JPanel to be disabled while the model is processing stuff. I've tried setEnabled(false). That disables user input on the JPanel, but I'd like it to be grayed out to add a more visual effect. Thanks in advance!

    I've got a utility that outputs a list of files required by a game. How can I run that utility within a C program and grab its output so I can act on it within the same program? UPDATE: Good call on the lack of information. The utility spits out a series of strings, and this is supposed to be complete portable across Mac/Windows/Linux. Please note, I'm looking for a programmatic way to execute the utility and retain its output (which goes to stdout).

I now want to replace these with something a bit more stylish and correct.   • The 80 column limit, still useful?

    Related: While coding, how many columns do you format for? Is there a valid reason for enforcing a maximum width of 80 characters in a code file, this day and age? I mostly use C, however this question is language agnostic. Its also subjective, so I'll tag it as such. Many individual projects set their own various coding standards, a guide to adjust your coding style. Many enforce an 80 column limit on code, i.e. don't force a dumb 80 x 25 terminal to wrap your lines in someone else's editor of choice if they are stuck with such a display, don't force them to turn off wrapping. Both private and open source projects usually have some style guidelines. My question is, in this day and age, is that requirement more of a pest than a helper? Does anyone still login via the local console with no framebuffer and actually edit code? If so, how often and why cant you use SSH? I help to manage a few open source projects, I was considering extending this limit to 110 columns, but I wanted to get feedback first. So, any feedback is appreciated. I can see the need to make certain OUTPUT of programs (i.e. a --help /h display) 80 columns or less, but I really don't see the need to force people to break up code under 110 columns long into 2 lines, when its easier to read on one line. I can also see the case for adhering to an 80 column limit if you're writing code that will be used on micro controllers that have to be serviced in the field with a god-knows-what terminal emulator. Beyond that, what are your thoughts? Edit: This is not an exact duplicate. I am asking very specific questions, such as how many people are actually still using such a display. I am also not asking "what is a good column limit", I'm proposing one and hoping to gather feedback. Beyond that, I'm also citing cases where the 80 column limit is still a good idea. I don't want a guide to my own "c-style", I'm hoping to adjust standards for several projects.   • Auto-size zoom on Google Maps in java? (depending android screen resolution)

    Hey guys, i've got 2 GeoPoints given to show them on the map with markers... so far so good... how can I get the optimum zoom level for the MapController in order to focus the middle of both points, but also have them on the map. The whole thing should work at different screen resolutions. Sorry for asking that silly question, I know thats not very difficult, but at the moment my head is boiling :/

  • Any reason not to use USE_ETAGS with CommonMiddleware in Django?

    The only reason I can think of is that calculating ETag's might be expensive. If pages change very quickly, the browser's cache is likely to be invalidated by the ETag. In that case, calculating the ETag would be a waste of time. On the other hand, a giving a 304 response when possible minimizes the amount of time spent in transmission. What are some good guidelines for when ETag's are likely to be a net winner when implemented with Django's CommonMiddleware?

  • Easy way to keep counting up infinitely

    What's a good way to keep counting up infinitely? I'm trying to write a condition that will keep going until there's no value in a database, so it's going to iterate from 0, up to theoretically infinity (inside a try block, of course). How would I count upwards infinitely? Or should I use something else? I am looking for something similar to i++ in other languages, where it keeps iterating until failure.
