• Corrupt Vista Account - With a twist

  I have a Windows Vista system whose profile seems to have been corrupted. Many solutions seem to indicate that you create another admin account, log in as that account, and delete the offending profile information for the account that is corrupted. Here's the twist: There are two accounts on this System - 1. Administrator Account 2. Standard Account. It's the Administrator Account which has become corrupted. If you attempted to do any user managment / attempt to create a new account under the 'Standard Account', UAC prompts for a user/pass. It has the admin account come up by default, and asking for a password (of which, there is none). When you click 'OK' - nothing happens (no doubt due to the fact that the account is corrupted, so it can't verify who or what is trying to allow the administrative privilage). Can anyone think of a way of fixing this account, or creating another administrator account to resolve this issue? Many thanks in advance.

• Publish database between two open database connections (Visual Studio 2005)

  I have two data locations, one to a local and one to a remote database. How do I copy the local database schema to the remote? The reason I don't use "Publish to provider" is that I'm not sure that I have all the information necessary to do so. I have the database name, server, username and pass but not "web service address" nor "web service password". I work in Visual Studio 2005. The server is a MSSQL 2005 server. I have tried using the queries but I only get errors doing so.

• Disable ALTQ for internal network traffic

  I currently have a FreeBSD 8.2 media server set up on my LAN that I use to stream my music from. I also have an SSH login that I use to do file transfers to and from this server remotely. I would like to set up ALTQ (and have gotten this working) to limit my outgoing bandwidth from the server for SSH traffic. However, configuring ALTQ this way is also limiting my internal traffic (and thus interfering with my music streaming) since I am only using a single network interface.   I wish to add a command on right click menu in explorer that opens current directory with cygwin. For same I have successfully added these registries: [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\classes\directory\shell\cygwin] @="c:\\cygwin\\bin\\bash.exe --login -i -c \"cd '%1'; bash\"" [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\classes\drive\shell\cygwin] @="c:\\cygwin\\bin\\bash.exe --login -i -c \"cd '%1'; bash\"" but this adds the command only when on some folder or drive. I want generic right click on explorer, on which, search gives me this registry to edit: [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\Background\shell\cygwin] @="c:\\cygwin\\bin\\bash.exe --login -i -c \"cd '%1'; bash\"" My problem lies with the value of the key, which doesnt work on %1 but on some static value like /cygdrive/c Could someone please tell me the proper way to pass current directory to the command, also please refer me some basic and advanced pages for same. • How can I redirect URLs using the proxy module in Apache?

  This seems like a super-basic question but I am having a hard time tracking down a straightforward solution, so appreciate any help and patience with me on this: I want to configure my Apache proxy server to redirect certain URLs so that, for example, a web browser HTTP request for www.olddomain.com gets passed to the proxy server which then routes the request to www.newdomain.com which sends a response to the proxy server which then passes it back to the web browser. Seems so simple, yet I don't see how to achieve this on Apache. I know Squid/Squirm offer this functionality so am guessing I am missing something really basic. I know I can use RewriteRule to dynamically modify the URL and pass it to the proxy server, but I effectively want to do the reverse, whereby the proxy server receives the original URL, applies the RewriteRule, and then forwards the HTTP request to the new URL. Hope that makes sense. Thanks in advance for any help.

• How do I start Chrome using a specified "user profile"?

  I use the new built-in "Users" feature of Chrome to switch between Home/Work accounts easily. However, Chrome remembers the "last" user profile you had selected when launching new windows. This is a problem if I close down my "Home" profile last, because when I then click the Email shortcut on my taskbar, because it goes to mail.mycompany.com using my Home profile, and I'm not logged in. I'd like to change the shortcut to the company webmail to pass a switch that tells Chrome to always start as the "Default" user, regardless of the last one used. Note: I have tried user-data-dir, and this seems to do something very different, completely isolated from the Users functionality built in to Chrome. It's possible I'm using it wrong, but please test this before assuming it does the same thing and posting an answer ;-)

• Automatic document generation

  I have some data in an excel file from which I have to generate a report. I repeat this task fairly regularly and am looking to automate it. I have a LaTeX project into which I usually just copy data by hand, export the necessary worksheets as pdfs and add them to my LaTeX project and compile with pdflatex. It has occured to me that there must be a way to automate this process. Is there an efficient way to export the data from excel and into a LaTeX project, possibly a vba script in excel could run the process? Also, it doesn't have to be LaTeX, I'm not all that experienced with MS office's more advanced features is there some way akin to a mail merge that I could achieve this with? In some ways this might be better in case I have to pass the work on to someone who doesn't know LaTeX. Thanks.

• Windows XP - non-user input data filter message after installing wireless keyboard & mouse

  After I installed MS wireless keyboard and mouse and associated software, I started getting this annoying message titled "Hardware installation" telling me the software I am trying to install did not pass the XP logo tests. The software is for "HID non-user input data filter" and I have two options Continue anyway or stop installation. Now, if I try to continue the installation fails, if stop installing another message pops up with a little mouse logo and the whole process repeats itself. after I am done with that message a third dialog appears. This is happening every time I boot up my PC (a desktop), I tried following an advice I found in some forum and download windows update for ID non-user input data filter, but that installation failed as well. The thing is, that both keyboard and mouse are working fine Is there anyway to get past these dialogs ?

Basically I know that I can download from ftp using the "ftp" utility but in order to do that I need to do first "ftp open" and then pass the other commands so it doesn't help me because I need to do perform the download only from one command. The download may be performed through http, ftp or any other protocol. • Samba users not added untill they logon first? Edit: How do I add users to tdbsam without a password prompt?

  I add users to my server with the command useradd -m -p PASS_HASH -s /usr/sbin/nologin USERNAME Then I try to access their samba home share, but it never shows up until I login with the user: root:~$sudo login failtest Password:###### Added user failtest. Is there some way of added the user without logging in? Edit: The problem is that the user is added with the useradd command, but ubuntu seems to run an initalisation script when the user logs on for the first time. This script then adds that user to the tdbsam user database. Finding the initalisation script or the method it uses to add a user to the tdbsam database without requiring any user input (as smbpasswd -a USER prompts the user for a password). So all I need is a way to add a user+pass to the tdbsam database without prompting a user for a password (eg: samaba-add-user.sh USERNAME PASSWORD).

• How do I stop someone from saturating my line & wasting CPU cycles

  My web host shows inbound & outbound traffic with mrtg. I have a steady 3.5mbps inbound traffic from Nigeria. Even assuming the source IPs & destination ports are blocked with Iptables & verifying nothing is listening on those ports, will the traffic still always pass through the switch & "get" to my server (where my server wastes CPU cycles "dropping" the packets)? Assuming I was setup with a hardware firewall, the traffic would still show in mrtg assuming the firewall is behind the switch? So is there any way to stop someone from saturating your 100mbps line, if they also have a 100mbps line? Other than filing an abuse complaint with the kind folks in Nigeria?

• My powershell script wont save a file when run using Task Scheduler, do I need to specify a specific argument?

  I have a script that downloads a temporary Excel file, copies parts of it to a new file, and saves it to a specific location on the network. The problem I'm having is that the new file is never created/saved. If I run the script locally (through cmd.exe, powershell, or powershell ise), it WILL save the file locally, or to the network. If I try running the script via a schedule or on-demand via Task Scheduler, the temporary file is created, but the final document is never created or saved. Is there a specific argument I need to pass, or anything I could be doing wrong? This is the command I'm currently using: powershell.exe -file C:\path\to\my\powershell\script\thescript.ps1 Since it calls environment variables, and other variables relative to the scripts positon, I also set "Start in" to C:\path\to\my\powershell\script\

• Nested %..% representation in Windows 7

  In order to organize the PATH environment, I came up with the following method. Setup variable : ABC = "PATH1;PATH2" Set the path variable using the predefined setup variable : Path = %ABC%%DEF% ... It seems to work fine, but I found that some of the variables are not transfomred into real paths when I run the set command. (I mean, the PATH=PATH1;PATH2;%DEF%, for example). What I found was as follows. If the variable name has '_', Windows can't transform it. If the variable has the path with %...% variable, windows can't transform it. Q1 : Am I correct? Q2 : If so, is there a way to by pass the nested %...% varibale problem?

• Passing the output of the last command to sed as an argument

  Hi, Basically, I'm wanting to automate adding something to xorg.conf in the right place, I've used some commands to get the line number of the line I want to manipulate, but I'm not really sure how to go about passing this line number (as an argument and NOT something to be manipulated) to sed. I have been told about xargs and looked at the docs on it, but after some reading and experimentation I can't seem to get it to work. In case anyone can think of a better method entirely, the process I want to automate is just finding the line containing both "Identifier" and "Monitor0" (there will only be one) and adding a line below it. The problem with just finding Monitor0 and manipulating that line is that there are multiple lines with Monitor0 in. I've got this far: fgrep -n "Monitor0" </etc/X11/xorg.conf | fgrep "Identifier" | cut -f1 -d: This gives out the line number which I'm wanting to pass to sed, but I'm not really sure how to do it. ...or is there a simpler way which I'm not seeing?   I noticed that for encoding CD rips, Zune is still using WMA 9.2 instead of WMA 10 Pro. On a given file using the highest quality VBR settings looks like this: VBR Quality 98, 44 kHz, stereo 1-pass VBR On the same file if I use WMA 10 Pro, with the same settings, the resulting file is about 20% smaller. Using my ears, I'm unable to tell the difference, but I'm wondering if this was the goal of WMA 10 Pro (to be as good as WMA at a lower bitrate). Is the quality of a WMA 10 Pro file equal to that of a WMA 9.2 file encoded with the same settings?

• How can I programmatically renumber pages in a PDF?

  As a graduate student, I come across PDFs of articles and book chapters on a daily basis. Sometimes these PDFs are paginated correctly internally (that is, if an article starts on page 67, the PDF starts on page 67 as well; not on page 1). When they aren't, I have to open the file in Acrobat and renumber the pages in the "Page Thumbnails" panel. I would love to be able to automate this whole process with a script (bash, Python, AppleScript, whatever) that lets me pass the first actual page number... something like fixpagination example.pdf 67. However, I cannot find any terminal-based program that can re-paginate PDFs. Neither pdftk nor PyPDF seem to be able to deal with pagination. Are there any scriptable programs that can internally re-paginate PDF files?

• DKIM, spam probability, signing with key at mail server vs sender domain?

  I'm working on an email marketing tool and so far we've been recommending our customers to set up an SPF-record (Sender-ID) and a DKIM-record, we also have our own SPF-record on the mail server and a shared DKIM-record for those who do not set up their own DKIM-record. Those that do not set up their own DKIM-records still pass the DKIM-test, but with the notice that "identity doesn't match any headers" (according to port25), i.e, it doesn't match the textual sender domain. But does anyone know if this "discrepancy" actually has any impact on spam scoring/probability, i.e, should we continue to recommend our customers to set up a DKIM-record (as opposed to just using our shared) or is just wasted effort?

• SSRS report on SharePoint Web Part

  I have this configuration: DBK- SQL/SSRS/SSAS (includes SharePoint databases) SPK- SharePoint I created a SharePoint Site with an SSL certificate. Then on DBK I setup the SSRS with an SSL. Finaly went back to SharePoint and setup a webpart on a subsite to connect to the SSRS report. The problem comes that the user is asked 2 times to authenticate. Once when he logs into sharepoint, then when he wants to see the SSRS report. Since I am not an expert on SSRS, I am asking is there an easy way to pass the SharePoint credentials to the SSRS report. Would it be easier to install SSRS on SPK? Would that even work or solve my problem?

Still, use information_schema; select count(*) from processlist where User = 'user'; never shows me more than 20 connections.   I build a basic WCF service that I now want to host in IIS7 under Windows Server 2008 R2. I added the service as an application under the default web site but whenever i try to run the application I get the following error: HTTP Error 500.19 - Internal Server Error The requested page cannot be accessed because the related configuration data for the page is invalid. Config Error - Cannot read configuration file due to insufficient permissions The only way I can get this service working is if i choose to "connect as" the server Administrator when adding the service. the "application user (pass-through authentication)" option does not seem to work. Could anyone help me out, I've just started using IIS7 and have no idea what to do... Thanks

  I'm about to encourage a group of people to begin using S-Mime and GPG for digital signatures and encryption. I foresee a nightmare of encrypted documents which can no longer be recovered because of lost keys. The thorniest issue is archiving. The natural way to preserve privacy in an archive is to archive the encrypted document. But that opens us up to the risk of a lost key when time comes to unarchive a document, or a forgotten password. After all it will be a long way in the future. This would be equivalent to having destroyed the document. First thought is archiving keys with documents, but that still leaves the forgotten pass phrase. Archiving the passphrase too would be tantamount to archiving in the clear. No privacy. What approaches do you use? What insights can you offer on the issue?
