• How to increase the amount of steps of brightness adjustment-key

  The screen of my laptop (Dell Vostro 3460) supports 16 levels of brightness: Not only according to the manufacturer, but also as is clear from two OSs: Both Windows 7 and Ubuntu (dual-booted) support all levels. On Windows 7, the hotkeys for brightness adjustment support all levels. In ubuntu it is apparent when going on the brightness slidebar (see picture below) from left to right; I can count 16 different levels of brightness when doing so. When using the hotkeys (Fn+F4 and Fn+F4), however, only 5 levels are supported. How can I adjust these levels and make them in line with what my screen supports?

  I am fairly new in product development and I am trying to work over a product. The problem that I have realized is that people draw diagrams and charts showing different modules and layers. But as I am working alone (I am my own team) I got a bit confused about the interaction I am facing in the development within the programs and I am wondering whether developing a product in modules is real or not? Maybe I am not a great programmer, but I see no boundaries when data start to travel from frontend to backend.

• Why Wikipedia doesn't appear as a referral in Google Analytics' Traffic sources?

  One of my clients has a website and got not spammy backlinks in a Wikipedia article. When I test it for SEO purposes with Google Analytics (from different IPs), apparently there is no referral information. On the Real-Time view my test visit is visible but with There is no data for this view in the referrals subview. And this visits appear as (direct) / (none) on the Traffic sources view. Wikipedia is not hiding in any way its links origin, since it is shown in the server visits log. Is Google ignoring Wikipedia as a referral? Am I missing anything else? Update: Now it works, several days after the link was active. Maybe something is detecting for how long the link was there so that it doesn't work just from the beggining, as a security measure? Many visits are actually not recorded.

• Google-Calendar offline?

  How can I have my google-calendars availabe offline on my PC as well? I have been using dropbox to sync my calendars in ics-format between different PC's instead of using google calendar. The disadvantage of google-calendar is, that I can only see my appointments when online. Now I want to sync my calendars with my android device as well, what does not seem to be possible yet. So I am planning to have an online copy of all my appointments on Google-Calendar, in order to sync them with my Android device. At the same time I want to be able to access my appointments offline (have an offline copy of each calendar on my PC's synced via Dropbox). Is there a way to automatically duplicate and sync Coogle-Calendars with Ubuntu to achieve this? • Does my approach for building a real time monitoring system make sense? [closed]

  I am developing an application that will display a dashboard that will display data from different SQL databases. This needs to happen in almost real time, our refresh time is about 5 minutes. My approach so far is: Develop a Windows service to accumulate the data from various SQL Server instances. Persist those details into a SQL DB, from which the dashboard will display them on the web page. Trigger fetching of data from the Windows service will every x minutes. The details of the SQL Server instances will be stored in the SQL DB which the Windows service will be referring. Does my approach make sense?

• client website compromised, found a strange .php file. any ideas?

  I do support work for a web development company and I found a suspicious file today on the website of one of our clients called "hope.php" which contained several eval(gzuncompress(base64_decode('....'))) commands (which on a site like this, usually indicates that they've been hacked). Searching for the compromised site on google, we got a bunch of results which link to hope.php with various query strings that seem to generate different groups of seo terms like so: (the second result from the top is legitimate, all the rest are not) Here is the source of "hope.php": http://pastebin.com/7Ss4NjfA And here is the decoded version I got by replacing the eval()s with echo(): http://pastebin.com/m31Ys7q5 Any ideas where this came from or what it is doing? I've of course already removed the file from the server, but I've never seen code like this so I'm rather curious as to its origin. Where could I go to find more info about something like this?

My new site map just got spidered by Google for some reason. It is located at http://quantlabs.net/private/sitemap.xml, is this in danger of getting me de-indexed from Google's index. Does it look like spam even though it is not meant to be? I am trying to figure the limitation in terms of Google's threshold before they deem it a spammy sitemap. This is sitemap contains automated postings which are different with the stock symbol provided. The amount of postings within the Sitemap are quite a few in a small amount of time.

• Pppoe wireless connection, Ubuntu 12.4

  I recently bought a new computer (Asus 1015 cx) with Ubuntu (12.4) as preinstalled system. My problem is with the internet. The computer connects just fine to the free wifi we have at home, but in college, we have a little bit different system. There is wifi, but it is not free - everyone receives a user name and a password. I cant manage to estabilish this Pppoe connection - the computer "sees" where can it connect, but I dont know where to write my username and password. It is not the DSL connection, what I have already tried. Can you help me?

• Unable to start backuppc

  I had a ext4 drive today I replaced with a RAID drive, I moved all the files from the old HDD. After that I tried to start the Backuppc but I'm getting the following error: Can't create a test hardlink between a file in /media/WESYS_RAID/backups/nbackuppc/pc and /media/WESYS_RAID/backups/nbackuppc/cpool. Either these are different file systems, or this file system doesn't support hardlinks, or these directories don't exist, or there is a permissions problem, or the file system is out of inodes or full. Use df, df -i, and ls -ld to check each of these possibilities. Quitting... • sell applications that run only on a GPL v2 Server

  I have been testing Pentaho BI server community edition, and after reading their licensing terms I found out that the community edition is under GPLv2. As you may know the server is intended to host different types of files and applications (like reports, olap cubes,etc...) My question is : are we allowed to sell applications that run on the GPLv2 server ? (we will maybe modify the server source code a bit but we won't charge it to our clients. thus the modified GPL server will be just an execution environment or a container for the reports and applications that we intend to sell) ? this suggests that our clients must install the GPL v2 edition first and then buy from us the reports that work on it but not their source code. Say we got the following code: let a = 5 printfn "%d" a I've read that this would be seen by the compiler as let a = 5 in ( printfn "%d" a ) And so the value of all this would be value of inner expression, which is value of printf. On the other hand, in f# interactive: > let a = 5;; val a : int = 5 Which clearly indicates that the value of let expression is the value bound to the identifier. Q: Can anyone explain what is the value of a let expression? Can it be different in compiled code than in F# interactive?

  Background A site has multiple ccTLDs: example.com for the US, example.co.uk for UK users, example.de for Germans, etc. Googling for certain city keywords will return rich snippets with a list of Google Places: Problem When searching on Google Germany, the domain for US users (example.com) appears instead of the corresponding ccTLD (example.de). This is not good user experience, as users would most likely like to book on a site localized for them (e.g. language and currency). Question What solutions are there? Is it possible to return different ccTLDs in rich snippets for Google searches in Germany/UK? Ideas Would implementing the hreflang annotation resolve this? What about entering multiple corresponding URLs in the structured data markup?

• How can I make sure my website will be available during a presentation?

  I have an online presentation to do next week and I have it all ready to go. The website is HTML and CSS only (no DB), and currently resides on my shared hosting account. Now, although my shared hosting is (relatively) reliable, I have noticed that recently they have been making some changes and my website has been unavailable at times. I don't want this to happen to me on the morning of my presentation, so I am asking what is the best way to prepare for such a thing? My domain is www.presentation.mydomain.com and I would like to keep this if possible (even if issues arise). I have been thinking of a few alternatives: Host my site on two different domains or servers (but what about the domain name?) Have a portable XAMPP version on a USB stick (again, domain name?) Possible failover site/location Update: The presentation will be carried out on their laptop, not mine. So I am unable to install any software.

• Protecting design ideas from being copied by other websites?

  Hi everyone, I'm planning a project at the moment, while building a completely different project at the same time. Both of these projects are quite innovative in the way they either work or the way they are presented. One of the projects hasn't been done before, and the other is being made has competition, but I feel the competitions websites are light years behind what I'm doing. Is there a way for me to prevent the way my sites work or presented from being stolen? I've thought of patenting parts of them, but it requires £10,000 and I don't have that amount of money. Also, would me putting a Copyright notice on the site or an All Rights Reserved tag give me any muscle when going to websites that I feel have stolen my ideas (if they have)? Cheers!

• How to get differents backgrounds for each desktop working properly?

  I've followed all the instructions for getting differents wallpapers for each desktop. I'm using Ubuntu 10.10. I've installed compiz-fusion-plugins-extra to add Wallpaper plugin on my Compiz Settings Manager (ccsm). But unfortunaly I cannot get my wallpapers working properly. I follow these instructions http://ubuntuguide.net/different-wallpapers-on-each-workspace-in-ubuntu and I just get a black background. Everything works fine after I press Win+P (I don't know what is this shortcut, refresh output I guess) or switch between ttf1 and ttf8 (ctrl+alt+f1 and ctrl+alt+f8). I tried reboot but the problem persist. What can I do to resolve this issue ?

• Is there a difference between multi-tasking and time-sharing?

  Just going over my school notes, my teacher identifies multi-tasking OS, and time-sharing OS as two different things. I really don't see a difference between the two. MULTI-TASKING: You load a number of programs in the memory and execute them. You execute another program if the time quantum allocated to the current program expires OR if it goes on to do I/O and leaves the CPU OR if it finishes execution. TIME-SHARING: the same,again. The same applies in case of serial processing and batch processing. Although they are the same, I guess the only difference would be the way in which control information is passed to the CPU. Maybe, and again MAYBE, in serial processing you need to provide the punch cards with all the processes while in batch, the entire batch uses the same set of control information. Like all the print jobs would have the same control information.

• Problems with the colors on my screen. How can I check if it's a hardware problem?

  On my EEE PC netbook some colors are not displayed properly. Specifically, dark gradients such as in the window title do not look very smooth, but rather look like a sequence of a couple of different colors. This is especially visible when opening a menu, for example the "File" menu in Firefox. As you know this one is black, and it looks terrible on my screen. It is not just black, but the colors look really graded and far from a smooth gradient or anything. Now I am wondering: Is this a hardware or software issue? And how can I check this? If it should be a fixable problem I think it would be worth another question. Note that I am using Natty. If my problem description is not good enough I can try to take a photo.

• Window colors/shades/decoarations/whatever per instance

  Sometimes I open several instances of one program at the same time and have to switch between them every few seconds and get totally confused as to which is which (they all display similar information, except few bits). I'd like to have each one of them color-coded, different shades, window border, etc or have anything visual to make them differ from one another to ease the confusion. Ideally this would happen automatically when I launch a new instance. I guess this belongs to the window manager so mine is xfce. In one of the window managers I used to use a huge label was displayed each time I switched between workspaces, something like that (with window title or simple number) would do as well. Any clues?

• interface changed after restart on Xubuntu

  Something happened a few times after using Xubuntu since 1 month ago. A few times after i restarted my laptop the interface was totally changed. The icons from the panel were different and almost everything. It looked great, it had a grey interface, very nice icons, buttons were bigger and everything looked great. I have no idea what happened, i tried to find the same interface/theme from Settings Manager but without succes. Can anyone please tell me what happened or how can i use the grey interface? It dissapeared after i restarted the laptop. Thank you

• MVC 2 Breaks my Charts?

  I wonder if anyone has had issues with running MSCharts with MVC 2?  I have tried a couple of different issues, but still have not got them to render correctly.  In the end I always end up with broken image links.  Has anyone seen this? I have no errors displaying in my MVC 2 Application build or anything, nothing specific that leads me to any explanation.  If anyone has any ideas, please leave a comment or shoot me an e-mail; adronhall at gmail dot com.  I would greatly appreciate any insight you MSChart Elite may have.  : )

  I'm just starting out as a Java programmer and have very minimal experience. I would like to improve my knowledge and study for the Java certification. I realize everyone will have a different answer but for those who have taken the certification and passed it, I'd really appreciate if you could tell me your experiences.
