• in visual studio 2008, when I stop debugging an asp classic website visual studio always crashes

  We are running visual studio 2008 (with the service pack) and having troubles when we are debugging an asp classic website. We can attach to the w3p process and debug just fine. breakpoints work, we can view variable values. The difficulty arises when it comes time to detach or stop the debugger. Every time we take either approach (detach or stop the debugger) we get a series of crashes from Visual studio. Has anyone seen anything like this? Any suggestions on what to look at?

• Store XML data in Core Data

  Hi, is there any easy way of store XML data into core data? Currently, my app just pulls the values from the XML file directly, however, this isn't efficient for XML files which holds over 100 entries, thus storing the data in Core Data would be the best option. XML file is called/downloaded/parsed ever time the app opens. With the Core Data, the XML data would be downloaded ever 3600 seconds or so, and refresh the current data in the core data, to reduce the loading time when opening the app. Any ideas on how I can do this? Having reviewed the developer documentation, it doesn't look very tasty.

I'd like to do something like this to the resulting list //nhibernate query IList<MedicalDays> days = daysDao.FindAll(searchCritCollection); //select a list of days from resulting list IEnumerable<MedicalDays> queriedList = days.SelectMany(i => i.MedicalRequest.MedicalUser == employee); Linq tells me that the type cannot be inferred by the usage. This article says ... the Java bytecode doesn’t support dynamic method invocation. There are three supported invocations modes : invokestatic, invokespecial, invokeinterface or invokevirtual. These modes allows to call methods with known signature. We talk of strongly typed language. This allows to to make some checks directly at compile time. On the other side, the dynamic languages use dynamic types. So we can call a method unknown at the compile time, but that’s completely impossible with the Java bytecode. What am I missing?

  Hi there, I tried to look through various resources before posting here, but was having a surprisingly difficult time finding an answer to my question. Sorry in advance if I overlooked it. I'm currently trying to add the FBML Multi-Friend Selector to my Facebook page. It has a limit on the number of friends you can invite at a time ("Add up to 20 of your friends by clicking on their pictures below"). From what I've looked through it sounds like 20 is the max number of friends a user can invite, but then looking at Mint's page, they have a 22 max invite (http://www.facebook.com/mint?ref=ts) I thought it might be based on number of page fans, as Mint has 56,000, but that doesn't seem to be the case as this page only has 256 fans and have a max of 26 friend invites (http://www.facebook.com/tivix?v=app_106437999388442). Therefore, I don't really understand how this system works. Is there a way for me to increase to 26? Unlimited? Thanks for your help!

• Installing Recaptcha in Joomla 1.5 user registration

  I am trying to install ReCaptcha into the user registration of Joomla 1.5. This may just be an issue with Joomla but when i hit register nothing happens. I think it's doing some JavaScript form validation but there is nothing telling the user what went wrong. if, God forbid, they do fill out the form correctly Joomla will redirect the user to the homepage and give no notice of success. Is this a Joomla issue or is there something wrong with my install? Does anyone know of a plug-in or module for Joomla that would make this easier? • Which functions in the C standard library commonly encourage bad practice?

  Hello all, This is inspired by this question and the comments on one particular answer in that I learnt that strncpy is not a very safe string handling function in C and that it pads zeros, until it reaches n, something I was unaware of. Specifically, to quote R.. strncpy does not null-terminate, and does null-pad the whole remainder of the destination buffer, which is a huge waste of time. You can work around the former by adding your own null padding, but not the latter. It was never intended for use as a "safe string handling" function, but for working with fixed-size fields in Unix directory tables and database files. snprintf(dest, n, "%s", src) is the only correct "safe strcpy" in standard C, but it's likely to be a lot slower. By the way, truncation in itself can be a major bug and in some cases might lead to privilege elevation or DoS, so throwing "safe" string functions that truncate their output at a problem is not a way to make it "safe" or "secure". Instead, you should ensure that the destination buffer is the right size and simply use strcpy (or better yet, memcpy if you already know the source string length). And from Jonathan Leffler Note that strncat() is even more confusing in its interface than strncpy() - what exactly is that length argument, again? It isn't what you'd expect based on what you supply strncpy() etc - so it is more error prone even than strncpy(). For copying strings around, I'm increasingly of the opinion that there is a strong argument that you only need memmove() because you always know all the sizes ahead of time and make sure there's enough space ahead of time. Use memmove() in preference to any of strcpy(), strcat(), strncpy(), strncat(), memcpy(). So, I'm clearly a little rusty on the C standard library. Therefore, I'd like to pose the question: What C standard library functions are used inappropriately/in ways that may cause/lead to security problems/code defects/inefficiencies? In the interests of objectivity, I have a number of criteria for an answer: Please, if you can, cite design reasons behind the function in question i.e. its intended purpose. Please highlight the misuse to which the code is currently put. Please state why that misuse may lead towards a problem. I know that should be obvious but it prevents soft answers. Please avoid: Debates over naming conventions of functions (except where this unequivocably causes confusion). "I prefer x over y" - preference is ok, we all have them but I'm interested in actual unexpected side effects and how to guard against them. As this is likely to be considered subjective and has no definite answer I'm flagging for community wiki straight away. I am also working as per C99.

  Hi, guys. I have an ASP.NET MVC page where the model is being edited. On each action executing I have a new controller, so I don't get an updated model. I'm saving a model instance into Session["MyModelKey"].   I have a problem that I have not faced before: It seems that the order of interpretation in my program is somehow different from what I expect. I have written a small Twitter client. It takes a few seconds for my program to actually post a tweet after I click the "GO" button (which can also be activated by hitting ENTER on the keyboard). I don't want to click multiple times within this time period thinking that I hadn't clicked it the first time. Therefore, when the button is clicked, I would like the label text to display something that tells me that the button has been clicked. I have implemented this message by altering the label text before I send the tweet across. However, for some reason, the message does not display until the tweet has been attempted. But since I have a confirmation message after the tweet, I never get to see this message and my original problem goes unsolved. I would really appreciate any help.   I always read about this funny weight value in the Android documentations. Now I want to try it for the first time but it isn't working at all. • C# 4.0 'dynamic' and foreach statement

  Not long time before I've discovered, that new dynamic keyword doesn't work well with the C#'s foreach statement: using System; sealed class Foo { public struct FooEnumerator { int value; public bool MoveNext() { return true; } public int Current { get { return value++; } } } public FooEnumerator GetEnumerator() { return new FooEnumerator(); } static void Main() { foreach (int x in new Foo()) { Console.WriteLine(x); if (x >= 100) break; } foreach (int x in (dynamic)new Foo()) { // :) Console.WriteLine(x); if (x >= 100) break; } } } I've expected that iterating over the dynamic variable should work completely as if the type of collection variable is known at compile time. I've discovered that the second loop actually is looked like this when is compiled: foreach (object x in (IEnumerable) /* dynamic cast */ (object) new Foo()) { ... } and every access to the x variable results with the dynamic lookup/cast so C# ignores that I've specify the correct x's type in the foreach statement - that was a bit surprising for me... And also, C# compiler completely ignores that collection from dynamically typed variable may implements IEnumerable<T> interface! The full foreach statement behavior is described in the C# 4.0 specification 8.8.4 The foreach statement article. But... It's perfectly possible to implement the same behavior at runtime! It's possible to add an extra CSharpBinderFlags.ForEachCast flag, correct the emmited code to looks like: foreach (int x in (IEnumerable<int>) /* dynamic cast with the CSharpBinderFlags.ForEachCast flag */ (object) new Foo()) { ... } And add some extra logic to CSharpConvertBinder: Wrap IEnumerable collections and IEnumerator's to IEnumerable<T>/IEnumerator<T>. Wrap collections doesn't implementing Ienumerable<T>/IEnumerator<T> to implement this interfaces. So today foreach statement iterates over dynamic completely different from iterating over statically known collection variable and completely ignores the type information, specified by user. All that results with the different iteration behavior (IEnumarble<T>-implementing collections is being iterated as only IEnumerable-implementing) and more than 150x slowdown when iterating over dynamic. Simple fix will results a much better performance: foreach (int x in (IEnumerable<int>) dynamicVariable) { But why I should write code like this? It's very nicely to see that sometimes C# 4.0 dynamic works completely the same if the type will be known at compile-time, but it's very sadly to see that dynamic works completely different where IT CAN works the same as statically typed code. So my question is: why foreach over dynamic works different from foreach over anything else?

  I'm trying to setup a server-client interraction: Server gets a string from client Server returns data to client I got this working with socket.send and socket.recv, but was wondering how to get it working with files through socket.makefile. I've got most of the pieces working, but don't know how to force each of the pieces to read at the appropriate time. So what it looks like is happening is that both the client and server are reading on the socket at the same time. Any ideas on how to let the server complete the original read before the client starts waiting for its information? Below are the core pieces that reproduce the read lock. • Entity Attribute Value Database vs. strict Relational Model Ecommerce question

  It is safe to say that the EAV/CR database model is bad. That said, Question: What database model, technique, or pattern should be used to deal with "classes" of attributes describing e-commerce products which can be changed at run time? In a good E-commerce database, you will store classes of options (like TV resolution then have a resolution for each TV, but the next product may not be a TV and not have "TV resolution"). How do you store them, search efficiently, and allow your users to setup product types with variable fields describing their products? If the search engine finds that customers typically search for TVs based on console depth, you could add console depth to your fields, then add a single depth for each tv product type at run time. There is a nice common feature among good e-commerce apps where they show a set of products, then have "drill down" side menus where you can see "TV Resolution" as a header, and the top five most common TV Resolutions for the found set. You click one and it only shows TVs of that resolution, allowing you to further drill down by selecting other categories on the side menu. These options would be the dynamic product attributes added at run time. Further discussion: So long story short, are there any links out on the Internet or model descriptions that could "academically" fix the following setup? I thank Noel Kennedy for suggesting a category table, but the need may be greater than that. I describe it a different way below, trying to highlight the significance. I may need a viewpoint correction to solve the problem, or I may need to go deeper in to the EAV/CR. Love the positive response to the EAV/CR model. My fellow developers all say what Jeffrey Kemp touched on below: "new entities must be modeled and designed by a professional" (taken out of context, read his response below). The problem is: entities add and remove attributes weekly (search keywords dictate future attributes) new entities arrive weekly (products are assembled from parts) old entities go away weekly (archived, less popular, seasonal) The customer wants to add attributes to the products for two reasons: department / keyword search / comparison chart between like products consumer product configuration before checkout The attributes must have significance, not just a keyword search. If they want to compare all cakes that have a "whipped cream frosting", they can click cakes, click birthday theme, click whipped cream frosting, then check all cakes that are interesting knowing they all have whipped cream frosting. This is not specific to cakes, just an example.

• jquery error() calls showing up in firebug profile

  I am working on an ASP.NET application that make a lot of jquery and javascript calls and trying to optimize the client side code as much as possible. (This web application is only designed to run on special hardware that has very low memory and processing power.) The profiler in firebug is great for figuring out what calls are taking up the most time. I have already optimized a lot of my selectors and it is much faster. However the profile shows a lot of jquery error() calls. In the attached image of the firebug profile window you can see it was called 52 times, accounting for 15.4 of the processing time. Is that normal for jquery to call its error() like that? My code works flawlessy, and there are no error messages in the firefox error console. It seems like that is a significant performance hit. Is there anyway to get more info on what the errors are? Thanks.

  I am using the excellent FileHelpers library to process a fixed-length airline schedule file. I have a date field, then a few fields later on in the record, a time field. I want to combine both of these in the FileHelpers record class, and know there is a custom FieldConverter attribute. With this attribute, you provide a custom function to handle your field data and implement StringToField and FieldToString. My question is: can I pass other fields (already read) to this customer FieldConverter too, so I can combine Date and Time together. FieldConverter has an implementation that allows you to refer to both a custom processing class AND 'other strings' or even an array of object. So, it's hidden all the time In my particular case the errors that I show in the registration process cannot be seen on my 13inch laptop, but I don't want to show the scrollbars all the time. • Best way to display a list of events by month

  I have a mySQL table of events and want to display them in a list using PHP. Pretty simple, except I only want to display the month name once, for example: May 2010 12th, 7 pm. Event 1 - event one description 15th, 5:30 pm. Event 2 - event two description June 2010 9th, 7 pm. Event 1 - event one description 11th, 5:30 pm. Event 2 - event two description I'm very new at SQL and PHP. I can think of one way to do it. It would involve selecting all records grouped by date, then looping through all records, comparing the month/year value each time and the first time the month/year doesn't match, print a new header row to my HTML table. I can't believe it's the best or most efficient way to go. Any ideas for a newbie? I'm sure my way would work, but it's inelegant at best, and processor-intensive at worst.

  Hello World, I have a class Movie in it i have a start Date, a duration and a stop Date. Start and stop Date are Date Objects (private Date startDate ...) (It's an assignment so i cant change that) now i want to automatically calculate the stopDate by adding the duration (in min) to the startDate. By my knowledge working with the time manipulating functions of Date is deprecated hence bad practice but on the other side i see no way to convert the Date object to a calendar object in order to manipulate the time and reconvert it to a Date object. Is there a way? And if there is what would be best practice Thanks in advance Samuel

A few years later, I realized Fred Brooks won the Turing award. Some years after that, after a few large development projects, I started understanding what he was talking about. Are there any other books about software development on a meta/philosophical level—not in the sense of design patterns, templates, or even lisp macros—but at a level where ideas are expressed without code?

• Set username credential for a new channel without creating a new factory

  I have a backend service and front-end services. They communicate via the trusted subsystem pattern. I want to transfer a username from the frontend to the backend and do this via username credentials as found here: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms730288.aspx This does not work in our scenerio where the front-end builds a backend service channel factory via: channelFactory = new ChannelFactory<IBackEndService>(.....); Creating a new channel is done via die channel factory. I can only set the credentials one time after that I get an exception that the username object is read-only. channelFactory.Credentials.Username.Username = "myCoolFrontendUser"; var channel = channelFactory.CreateChannel(); Is there a way to create the channel factory only one time as this is expensive to create and then specify username credential when creating a channel?
