• PXE with WDS & Windows Server 2012 - no filename option in DHCP lease?

  I'm trying to configure Windows Server 2012 (a virtual box VM) with WDS so I can PXE boot some Windows 7 VMs (also virtual box). All the machines involved are only attached to the "host only network", 192.168.56.0/24. The Server 2012 machine has been setup as an AD DS machine, has DNS installed and working along with DHCP with option 60 - PXEClient - set and WDS is set to not listen on DHCP ports. I've followed http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj648426.aspx very closely. I've used the boot.wim and install.wim files from the Win 7 installation DVD and they're configured as 'boot' and 'installation' images respectively. When I boot the target machine, it gets an IP address, but I simply get 'no filename' and the boot won't proceed any further. I've tried setting option 66 to 192.168.56.2 (the WDS server) and option 67 to both Boot\x64\wdsnbp.com and Boot\x64\pxeboot.n12 but all to no avail. I can't seem to see anything in the event log, either. Can anyone out there spot what I'm doing wrong? Or give tips to narrow down a diagnostic?

• Random Hard Freeze of Windows 7 (is Kaspersky to be blamed for this?)

  The last few weeks I experienced a new strange behavior of my computer. Sometimes Windows 7 just freezes with no real reason at all. While listening to music for example the playback hangs and you can hear a very nasty sound. Neither mouse nor keyboard input is handled and everything is just stuck. Using Ubuntu this does not happen, so I think it is just a matter of driver issues or a Windows 7 bug. Furthermore I am really suspicious about Kaspersky (Internet Security 11) and so I let it perform a complete virus scan while no other app is running. At about 50% it happened again and I needed to restart the computer by holding the power button the bad way... A really weird thing is that playing Skyrim this happened once, however music playback did not stop. Only the framerate dropped to 0 and sometimes for a few seconds I am able to move. Therefore I am really confused as furthermore no bluescreen pops up. Memtest told me that everything seems to be alright... Can anyone explain me which data you need about my hardware and software (and which tools tools to use to gather the informatik) to be able to provide any help on my problem?

Only really ever show a percentage remaining number as pictured. The windows help documentation on the "battery meter" seems to indicate that it should display a time remaining indicator, is this accurate? How accurate is the battery meter? The accuracy of what the battery meter reports—what percentage of a full charge remains and how long you can use your laptop before you must plug it in—depends on several factors. • Why can I not access the internet when Windows 7 finds no issue with the ethernet connection and the network can see my device?

  So I just moved from a house to an apartment. In the house and the apartment I had Uverse set up - and in both I had my desktop connected via a ~40 foot long cat5 cable. However, upon moving to the apartment I found that my ethernet connection no longer provides internet. This would seem like a mundane problem if not for: The router can see the computer on the network Windows 7 (the desktop's OS) detects no problems with the ethernet connection. Connections over the internet (i.e. browser windows, Pandora, etc.) do not immediately fail. Instead they load for 2 minutes and then finally give up. Devices connected over the Wifi (PS4, Laptop) access the internet just fine While removing the cat5 cable from my house, I accidentally damaged the locking tab but managed to bend it back into the appropriate position. I would suspect that a bad cat5 cable might be to blame if not for the above issues (thought I've heard bad cat5 cables cause the most nonsensical problems) and the fact that I tested the cat5 cable by having it share internet between my laptop (working internet) to my desktop and it functioned just fine and provided the desktop with internet. My ipconfig /all successfully finds a default gateway, DHCP server, and DNS server. What could possibly be causing the problem?

• Why would Windows use slower network interface despite route metrics?

  On my previous notebook, the Dell/Broadcom wireless adapter had an option to automatically disable wireless when a wired network is connected, so I never dealt with multiple active interfaces. My current system has an Intel wireless adapter, and they apparently haven't figured out how to turn it off when there is a wired connection. Unless I explicitly remember to disable wireless when docked, the connection is active. That shouldn't be a problem (in theory), since the route metric will cause traffic to go over the fastest network (as indicated by the lowest metric in the routing table). Apparently not - I'm running a backup and seeing the throughput at 25Mbps or so (which is consistent with 802.11g) when a perfectly good Gigabit Ethernet interface is also connected. • How do I create and conveniently search through Libraries in Windows 8?

  In Windows 7, I took the habit of putting most of my frequently accessed disk areas as Libraries - there were about a dozen. Typing a word in the Start menu would then give me a summary of matches by Library. For example, searching for "WPF" would tell me that I've got some results in the Books library, in the Coding library and a few other PDFs in the Downloads library, one of which I could then expand to see all results within. In Windows 8, that functionality appears to be gone. The Search function in the Charms Bar lists tons of results by type (Documents, Pictures, et cetera) but not by Library. This is practically useless since Documents contains hundreds of .txt and .cs files, a few of which might be Books or Downloads. The only option I found is to go into Explorer and use the search bar in the Library section. However, there again, all search results are mixed together, and I can't seem to find a way to know which Library each result came from (in the Details view, I didn't find a Library column I could add). So, if I want to know which Library contains stuff about a given topic, I have to search the Libraries one by one. Very inconvenient. Is Microsoft slowly deprecating libraries? Any tips? How else can I search through libraries?

  I have an environment variable set in Windows as TEST=abc£ which uses Windows-1252 code page. Now, when I run a Perl program test.pl this environment value comes properly. When I call another Perl code - test2.pl from test1.pl either by system(..) or Win32::Process, the environment comes garbled. Can someone provide information why this could be and way to resolve it? The version of perl I am using is 5.8. If my understanding is right, perl internally uses utf-8, so the initial process - test1.pl received it right from Windows-1252 → utf-8. When we call another process, should we convert back to Windows-1252 code page?

  I have a question in scheduling jobs in web application. If we have to schedule jobs in web application we can either use java util Timer/TimerTask or Quartz(there are also other scheduling mechanism, but I considered Quartz). I was considering which one to use, when i hit the site http://oreilly.com/pub/a/java/archive/quartz.html?page=1 which says using timer has a bad effect as it creates a thread that is out of containers control in the last line. The other pages discuss Quartz and its capabilities, but I can read that Quartz also uses thread and/or threadpool to schedule tasks. My guess is that these threads are also not under the containers control Can anybody clarify this to me Is it safe to use Quartz in my web applications without creating hanging threads or thread locking issues? • Windows 7 Unidentified Network problem. Cannot connect to the internet.

  This is my first time on this website, but I was told this was a good place to ask this. I basically have a problem with Windows 7 connecting to my home network. It keeps identifying my home network as unidentified, and it continually does "identifying" until it simply say cannot connect to the Internet. I don't know how this problem occurred. It simply happened one morning. I am running Windows 7 Ultimate. I have a Realtek Network adapter. I don't think its the drivers. I have already tried system restore to a date when my computer was working fine but it still didn't fix the problem. From what Ive read online there was this bug in the services.msc area, something to do with Bonjour service. I cannot find either so I do not think that was the problem. I'll be online for a while, so I can provide any additional details if needed. I don't really know how to explain it because its so fudging complicated. I really appreciate clear and open steps to solving this. I have tried some things like system restore and rolling back drivers, doesn't seem to help.

• How to "swap in" again memory from page file to physical memory in Windows at once (like linux swap-off)

  Is there a way to swap back in (to put back all the memory data that was put into the page file (or swap, whatever you prefer)) memory on a windows PC? On linux, one can easily do this with the swapoff /dev/sdaX, where X is the swap partition. On windows, it seems to ask me to reboot each time.. The reason I'd like to do this, is that, even though swapping out the data to the swap file allows me to play a resource-hungry game fully in physical ram, when I stop the game, all the rest of my programs run slow. This is or course normal; all the programs were pushed into the page file because my RAM was too small, and all memory access to those programs after gaming bumps into hard page faults, with major delays and some frustration as a consequence. However, that frustration could easily be avoided, by simply allowing the PC to copy all data back into the physical memory for a minute or so, and then resume working on a fast working PC! (rather than having to endure the slowness -while- working) Thanks in advance for any advice on this! Kind regards

• How to find hidden/cloak files in Windows 2003?

  Here is the point. I set Windows to display all the hidden files and protected operating system files but even after that, my antivirus (Kaspersky) is still getting a ".dll" file on "c:\windows\system32" saying it's a riskware 'Hidden.Object'. I tried to find this file everytime but it's not there. So I asked one of the developers to create a service that verifies the folder each 5 seconds and, if it founds the file, copies to another place. If it copies to another place with the same name and extension, I still can't find the file on the other folder but Kaspersky now founds both. If I keep the same name but with a different extension, like ".temp123", I still can't find the file. Lastly, I created an empty text file and renamed with the same name as the other one, the file just gone too. After all this research It's clear that every file with this same name on this specific server gets cloak, doesn't matter the file extension. I created a file with this same name on another server and nothing happens, the file is still there without problem. How can I found this kind of file? How can I "uncloak" it? How can I know what this file is doing?

• "Work stealing" vs. "Work shrugging (tm)"?

  Why is it that I can find lots of information on "work stealing" and nothing on a "work shrugging(tm)" as a load-balancing strategy? I am surprised because work-stealing seems to me to have an inherent weakness when implementating efficient fine-grained load-balancing. Vis:- Relying on consumer processors to implement distribution (by actively stealing) begs the question of what these processors do when they find no work? None of the work-stealing references and implementations I have come across so far address this issue satisfactorarily for me. They either:- 1) Manage not to disclose what they do with idle processors! [Cilk] (?anyone know?) 2) Have all idle processors sleep and wake periodically and scatter messages to the four winds to see if any work has arrived [e.g. JAWS] (= way too latent & inefficient for me). 3) Assume that it is acceptable to have processors "spinning" looking for work ( = non-starter for me!) Unless anyone thinks there is a solution for this I will move on to consider a "Work Shrugging(tm)" strategy. Having the task-producing processor distribute excess load seems to me inherently capable of a much more efficient implementation. However a quick google didn't show up anything under the heading of "Work Shrugging" so any pointers to prior-art would be welcome. tx Tags I would have added if I was allowed to [work-stealing]

• MsMpEng.exe (Windows Defender?) uses a lot of CPU at startup and runs two instances on a single core

  I'm using Windows XP Professional SP2 on a single core AMD64 processor, and I've got two instances of MsMpEng.exe starting up when I start up and log in. They use 64MB and 32MB of ram and 140MB and 80MB of virtual memory, and fluctuate around 80% CPU usage for about 5 minutes at start up. They are (I read) associated with Windows Defender, but I'm concerned about: There's two of them, everything I read generally has only one reported. They might be scanning each other, and I want that to stop. They might be getting scanned by avgrsx.exe (AVG Free 8) (uses about 16Mb v ram) They might also be scanning moe.exe (assosciated with ms live mesh, which I'm considering getting rid of) Lastly I have Microsoft Security Essentials. I don't know the process name associated there. The main concern of mine (apart from the double instances) is that these are all trying to prioritize scanning each other at once except maybe moe.exe. This might seem legitimate but is likely a useless drain on resources. Have I made a mistake in having all of these installed, or is there a way to inform them not to do whatever they're doing that's taking about 5+ minutes at start up? [I also have Google Desktop, but I'm keeping that.] Comment if none of this makes sense to you.

• Asynchronous email processing in Java web application

  Hi everyone, I would like to implement asynchronous email sending in my web application when users register for a new account. This is so that if there is a problem or delay in sending the email message (e.g. the mail server is down or the network connection to the mail server is slow) the user won't be kept waiting for the sending to complete. My web app is built using Spring and Hibernate's implementation of JPA. What would be the best and most reliable way for me to implement asynchronous email processing in this web application? I am thinking about persisting the email information in a database table which is then regularly polled by a Quartz (http://www.opensymphony.com/quartz/) scheduled job for updates and when it finds new unsent emails, it attempts to send them. Is this a reasonable way of implementing what I want? Thanks.

  Is it possible to programmatically retrieve the IP or MAC address of a station assigned to a Windows MultiPoint Server 2012 host, using PowerShell or any other .NET or Windows API? Background: I'm developing a application to help set up USB-over-Ethernet zero clients in a WMS 2012 setup, bridging the PowerShell "WmsCmdlets" module (Microsoft.WindowsServerSolutions.MultipointServer.PowerShell.Commands.Library.WmsStation) and a third-party vendor API for configuring zero client IP address, etc. So far, I do not know any means of matching up the "stations" of the WmsCmdlets with the zero client objects in the vendor's API. Finding out the IP or MAC associated with a WMS station would do nicely, since I have this on the zero client API side. • How to set up a VPN Incoming connection with Windows to tunnel Internet traffic?

  I want to set up a VPN on a remote server to route all my Internet traffic for privacy reasons. I can set up an incoming connection and connect to it successfully. The problem is, I can just see the remote computer and no other Web sites will open. I want the remote server to act like a NAT. How can I do that? Note that I don't want to split Internet traffic. I actually want to send all the traffic to the remote server but need to make it relay the traffic. For the record, my remote server is Windows Web Server 2008 which does not have routing and remote access service. Clarification I'm mostly interested in server configuration. I don't have any problems configuring the client. By the way, Windows Web Server 2008 seems to have the same VPN features built in client OSes (like Vista) and specifically, it doesn't include the RRAS console in MMC. I'm also open to suggestions regarding third party PPTP/L2TP daemons available, if they are free.

  We've just installed gigabit switches at work, and things on the Linux side are going well. Our linux boxes, which use a Intel Corporation 82566DM-2 Gigabit nic (according to lspci), consistently get over 900 mbits/sec: iperf -c ipserver ------------------------------------------------------------ Client connecting to ipserver, TCP port 5001 TCP window size: 16.0 KByte (default) ------------------------------------------------------------ [ 3] local 192.168.40.9 port 39823 connected with 192.168.1.115 port 5001 [ ID] Interval Transfer Bandwidth [ 3] 0.0-10.0 sec 1.08 GBytes 929 Mbits/sec We have a bunch of Windows XP 64-bit machines that use Broadcom NetXtreme 57xx cards. I spent around a day trying to get equivalent speeds on them, but couldn't get above 200 Mbits/sec. I noticed the Windows iperf tests said that the TCP window size was 8 Kb by default (as opposed to 16 Kb on Linux, so I modified my test to reflect that. Still no love. I went to Broadcom's site, downloaded the latest drivers for the card and installed. Still no love. However, finally, I tried a 64 Kb window size with the new drivers, and finally an improvement! $ iperf -c ipserver -w64k ------------------------------------------------------------ Client connecting to ipserver, TCP port 5001 TCP window size: 64.0 KByte ------------------------------------------------------------ [ 3] local 192.168.40.214 port 1848 connected with 192.168.1.115 port 5001 [ ID] Interval Transfer Bandwidth [ 3] 0.0-10.0 sec 933 MBytes 782 Mbits/sec Much better, but still not really taking advantage of the full capabilities of the network. If the Linux box can reach 950 Mbits/sec consistently, this box should be able to as well. Also, if you're wondering about the medium, this is over the same cable...I'm switching back and forth.   I am on windows server 2003, but I guess it is the same on windows xp. This is a superuser question, because it is definitly desktop, so do not move or close it. Question: I copied some movable applications (usually people create them for usb sticks) to locations like c:\bin\app1\app1.exe app1.exe can open files of type *.ap1 When I rightclick file.ap1 and choose "open with ..." the "Open with" dialog appears. But it is not working how I expect in this situation. I can choose c:\bin\app1\app1.exe with the "Browse" button, but: app1.exe will not appear in the dialog where I just choosed it in the programs list, like I am used to it after clicking OK on it in the browse dialog. app1.exe will not open it when I click ok in the "Open with" dialog, the application that was assigned until then will still open it What could be the reason? Edit: Additional Information: my account is member of the administrators group I just changed the permissions of the folder c:\bin\app1\ and made sure that the group "Administrators" has all rights. I also inherited this manually to all subfodlers and subfiles.
