• VirtualBox won't use any kind of hardware acceleration

  I see an problem with VirtualBox hardware acceleration functionality... My system configuration: MSI PH67A-C43 (B3) (BIOS: 2.70) Intel Core i5-2400 Windows 7 Professional SP1 64-bit Oracle VirtualBox 4.1.10 Oracle VirtualBox Extension Pack 4.1.10 I can select the individual acceleration options such as PAE/NX, VT-x/VMD-V or Nested Paging within VM-Settings but if I start the VM the accelerations will be disabled as of the tooltip from CPU (right next to shared folders). Each acceleration is "Disabled". Does this sounds familar to anybody? How can I solve this?

• Accessing multiple local HD's or RAID with ESXi 4.0

  How to I get additional HD's to be recognized and used by ESXi 4.0. When I purchased my system I had two 2TB HD's, but when I installed ESXi it only recognized one of them. I'm happy to get whatever number of drives that I need (I have a four bay SATA in my Dell T310). What are some options? RAID? If so, is it supported. I guess I would need hardware instead of software since ESXi is so small. The VMWare forums (where I've lived for the last two days) are a charlie foxtrot of outdated and conflicting info. I want to utilize my T310, with 32 GB RAM, 2.8GHz quad core to run many lab Windows VM's. I don't need production level availability but I do want decent performance, even though it's in a lab environment. A huge thanks to Jim B., Zypher, Helvick, and Jeff Hengesbach who posted answers to my earlier predecessor question on why ESXi was so sluggish.

• Looking for a laptop with a removable hard drive

  At the moment, I possess a Dell Inspiron 6400. Just removing two screws, I've made the drive removable (look here) and I can pull it off in one second. The new Inspiron and Studio laptops don't support this anymore (the drive is no more on the side but on the back of the laptop). So I’m looking for a new laptop having this kind of feature, or one that can be modded easily. • FreeNas running on ESXi - sometimes gets very slugish.

  Hello everyone, I have a ESXi server (dual quad core, 8GB of DDR3 ram, 6x 1TB WD Blacks running in RAid 5 on the PErc 6/i controller. I have a 64bit freenas VM running, on this VM I keep about 200Gigs of stuff that my windows machines access. every now and then the throughput of this VM just dies, for example right now it can't even handle streaming a song and when I tried to transfer a folder the speed goes from 10-400KB/s. Might I add at this point that the ESXi box has dual gigabit network cards plugged into a good solid gigabit switch and other linux and windows VM's are just fine I have seen speeds over 90MB/s (frequently) The server still has ram left over (plenty actually) and cpu is very low (500-1000mhz) any ideas what could cause this? thanks. • Error running phusion passenger in standalone mode

  I'm trying to run standalone phusion passenger so that I can run different ruby rvm configurations on the same host. I already have ruby and passenger running fine on this host. I am following the instructions here. When I run standalone passenger the first time, it appears to successfully install nginx. • What would be better in my case - apache, nginx or lighttpd ?

  Hey everybody, I'm writing a php site that's expected to get about 200-300 concurrent users browsing it. When initializing the application will load about 30 php classes, some 10 maybe 15 images and a couple of css files. So my question is what else can I do (except optimizing my code and using apc/eaccelerator for php) to get as close as possible to those numbers of concurrent users ? Currently we haven't chosen a server for the site to be hosted on but most probably it'll be a VPS Dual core + 2 or maybe 4gb ram. Is it possible for such a server to handle that load ? Also how could I test it myself and be sure that it'll be able to handle it ? Thanks in advance, Me

  Hi, all. I've got a MacBook that's about three years old (it's the first generation that had a dual core CPU), running Leopard. I've got a Comcast DVR/HD Cable box. Is there something that I can install in between these devices that will let me watch TV from the Cable box on the Mac's display?   I have set of two lenova laptops in which Fedora core 13 is installed. In one machine, the monitor is detected properly such that It is possible to connect another monitor. But In another laptop, monitor is shown as unknown monitor. I tried to fix it by reinstalling xorg-x11-drv-intel.i686. But the problem remains same(unknown monitor). it is not possible to connect another monitor with this setting. Laptop model: G460. Graphics card: Intel Graphics Media accelerator HD. Thanks!

• How do you passthrough native SATA drives to a guest on ESXi?

  I have ESXi 4.0 running on an Intel DX58S0 Mothboardboard with an Intel Core i7 930 processor. VT-d is also enabled. I have three drives in the system, drive 0 is used for ESXi. Drive 1 and 2 contain data from an older machine and show up under the "Storage Adapters" section in configuration. I would like to allow a guest machine to access the data on these drives (as nativly as possible). I have enabled passthrough of the motherboard's built in SATA controller (Intel/Marvell 88SE6121 ). This controller shows up in my guest OS, but the guest shows no drives aside from the normal virtual drive. I have tried a Linux guest and Windows7. I have also configured the host machine to try IDE/RAID/ACHI modes for the SATA controller. Any ideas how I can configure one of my guests to get at the raw data on these drives?

I'm considering Sandy-Bridge i7 or i5 for my "game console" computer. And since I will use only one graphic card, one or two HDD, 4-8GB RAM and nothing else, I would be fine with a micro-ATX board with a Q67 (or some other low-end chipset).

• UEFI - Linux Mint Boot from USB Doesn't work

  I'm running Linux Mint (only OS other than in VirtualBox) and wanting to remove it. I've created a Live USB of Windows 8 using Windows 7 USB/DVD Download Tool - Yes, I know it says Windows 7 but I've been doing research and I am hearing from everywhere that it also works for Windows 8. The ISO was loaded on just fine (AFAIK) Computer came with Windows 8 pre-installed I have Safe boot and Fast boot disabled in the BIOS Settings I have USB as my first boot option I have tried both the USB 2.0 and 3.0 ports Yet, Mint is all that will boot up. Anybody have a similar issue? If it helps, the computer is a Toshiba Satellite S855D Laptop with an AMD APU quad-core processor (3 CPU, 1 GPU)

• How can I dual install Ubuntu 10.4 in a Mac Mini with 10.4.11?

  I'd like to power-up my aging Mac Mini (1.5GHz Core Solo, 1GB RAM, Tiger 10.4.11) by installing a shiny Ubuntu alongside the current OS. After all, I use Ubuntu for everything save for cleaning my teeth. Since it's my first and only Mac and I have next to no experience with the OS (having used it basically as a media player) I am a little concerned about rEFIt, ELILO, Boot Camp and the fact that it's basically a 4.5 years old unsupported machine and I might get asleep reinstalling everything several times. I've used the live desktop-i386 CD and everything works. I tried with an external USB drive instead of a CD but couldn't make it boot. As for installing Ubuntu, the howtos I've found give several alternatives depending on the model, the OSX version, etc.. but they usually talk about newer machines. Which howto should I follow to repartition, and boot thereafter? Thanks

• System freezes for 5 seconds when seeking in or skipping to songs and videos

  When I start playing a new video or MP3 or skip to a time when playing them, my system hangs for a couple of seconds. A restart solves this problem, but only for a while. It does not matter which player I use (VLC, Media Player, Winamp, Zoom Player), which media files or if they are located on a network drive or on the local hard drive. Everything else works flawlessly and after the playing has started, there are not problems - until I switch to another file. Additionally, when the Winamp playlist continues to the next song, the system does not hang. When I skip to the next song manually, the system hangs. I've been using Windows XP for years and consider myself a fairly professional windows user, but I have no idea what could cause this. Dual-core 2Ghz, 2GB RAM, Windows XP SP3, Audigy card with kxproject. Worked flawlessly for years. Would be glad if anyone could help.

I'm not sure what the cause is, so hopefully you can help. Sometimes (once a week-ish) I press the power button and nothing happens. No blinking, no sounds, no nothing. If I remove the power cord (or flip the switch on the power supply) I hear a capacitor discharge. If I leave it in the "no power at all" state for about 5 minutes then I can put the plug back in and the computer works perfectly. What is the issue? What do you think I have to replace?

  I'm in the process of building a PC intended mostly for gaming and I've got a few questions. Currently, I only have the motherboard and CPU: Motherboard: GIGABYTE GA-Z68AP-D3 CPU: Intel Core i3-2120 My main question is about memory compatibility. I have 4 Hynix 2GB HMT125U7BFR8C-G7 with light-moderate use laying around and I'd love to save a few bucks if I can. I've read that this is server memory... a) Will that be a problem for PC use? b) Is it compatible with the motherboard? I've emailed Hynix and checked Crucial to no avail. If incompatible, what memory would be a good fit given the components I have? The motherboard has 4 sockets and supports up to 32GB, but I don't know that I have the budget for that at the moment.   I was on all the builds of the Mavericks beta and connecting to my University's network was fine. Then I upgraded to the public release and now I can't seem to connect to the internet.   I've been looking at this as the same approach as building a desktop computer from scratch but I've never really come across the core things. Can I buy a laptop "case"? Can I buy a motherboard/PSU to fit that case? Can I choose a CPU fan? What are my battery options? Obviously taking into consideration the case. Why isn't this as easy as putting together a desktop computer? Shouldn't there be standards such as ATX? If they exist, what are they?

  I am using Linux mint OS since an Year , I use to consistently download updates and install , I use chrome as a default browser , when ever I open youtube and watch some video , I listen to some repetition in sound ( say repeated lyrics of song ) while it is playing , In firefox it is working fine . What is the problem am I missing any plugin , AFAIK Chrome doesn't need a flash player plug in , It has a built in flash player . IS that the problem ? And also previously I was not facing this , recently I started using Cinimon UI centOS after this all these kind of problems started MY hard ware is 64 bit intel core i3 and also I have installed linux mint 64 bit Please let me know what is the problem and how to fix this .
