• Weird routing issue (updated)

  I just updated the route tables due to a mistake on my part. I am working on getting networking working correctly on a cluster of 14 virtual servers at a customer site. 11 of them work fine for routing and 3 don't work correctly for their administrative network (172.28.56.0). All are running Windows Web Server 2008R2. Default gateway is set on the production network (172.28.58.0) and not on the administrative network (handled with persistent static routes). • CNet router - no field for private port

  I'm trying to configure port forwarding on my CNet router for a locally hosted HTTP server. The model number of my router is CQR-981 and the firmware version is 1.0.43. The problem is that there's no field to enter the private port of the HTTP server (the local port). According to the manual there should be one. Here's a picture of the manual: Here's a screenshot of my router page for port forwarding (with no field for private port): Is there some way I can circumvent this problem. Perhaps manually make an HTTP request to the HTTP server on the router to update the table with the private port number, or perhaps update my firmware to solve this problem.

• When "W" is held, the character moves forward, but when "W" and "A" is held, movement completely stops

  I am making a 2D game, and when I hold the key "w", the player goes forward, but when I hold both "w" and "a", the movement stops completely, when I want it to go forward, while shifting to the left. • SQL SERVER – New Look for CodePlexProject – Hosting for Open Source Software

  Codeplex is my favorite site. CodePlex is Microsoft’s free open source project hosting site. You can create projects to share with the world, collaborate with others on their projects, and download open source software. It is great place to find so many open source project available to explore. All the softwares are free and open source. I often go there at intervals to check what is new in SQL Server field as well on other technologies. Yesterday when I visited it, I had nice surprise as it has total makeover and looks very decent as well elegant at the same time. I have noticed that when I talk about Codeplex is user community, not everybody knows about it. The quickest way I explain what is codeplex is that I start naming few of the projects which are available there and suddenly I start noticing a few hands going up knowing the projects. This is indirect way to prove that many of us know CodePlex usability but do not pay special attention to what it is actually. Let me name a few popular projects of the CodePlex here. • Recovering OST file without profile

  We have a Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 and offer this solution to many customers. Recently, a customer had his personal Exchange server crash (which is what made him our customer). He called some technician to see if he could repair his server before calling us, but this said tech wasn't able to do anything for them. Now that all his mailbox are on our server, he would like to transfer his old emails over to the new profile, but the tech deleted all profiles on the client machines while trying to repair his Exchange server. So my customer still has the OST files but they are not related to any profiles. Is there any way to re-attach them to a profile, or to convert them into PST files that he could then import into his new profile? The only thing I found were third party software that could to the conversion, but I am wondering if Microsoft has any tools that could re-attach the OST to a new profile. I have also tried the scanpst.exe and scanost.exe to no avail. Thank you

• Windows 2003 shutdown instead of reboot

  Hi all, I've got a very strange problem. On the net I can only find problems with Server 2003 pc's, that reboot instead of shutting down, but in my case... (go figure) it does the opposite. When I choose to reboot, the system shutdown. Yes I am sure I used the reboot button. It happens via start == reboot and it happens when clicking on the reboot button when the update's have been installed. Nothing changed to the system's hardware. Only update's have been installed on the system. I did notice something odd in the logs when rebooting: Description: Timed out sending notification of target device change to window of "C:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXE" KB: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/924390 They talk about a removable drive, but in my case, it's explorer.exe :s it appears 4 times. • Small Business Server services will not start, and remote desktop and UAC are broken

  Yesterday I began setting up a server with Windows Small Business Server 2008. All I am configuring it for right now is to be a domain controller and Exchange server. I completed the initial setup of SBS then started looking through different connection options (allowing VPN versus using a TS Gateway). After I rebooted one time, I started having three not-obviously-related issues: First, I could no longer remote desktop into the computer. I ran TCPView and saw that it was no longer listening on port 3389. I checked everything in Terminal Service Configuration but everything shows the computer ought to be allowing connections. Also, when I tried to use anything that required user account control elevation, the UAC dialog never popped up and the program that was waiting just froze. If I try to run "regedit" from the Run box, for example, it never appears. When I run in safe mode which does not run with UAC, I was able to access everything. I didn't want to deal with it, so I turned off UAC and rebooted. Finally, in the Windows SBS Console, there are status indicators for Security, Updates, Backup, and Other Alerts. The first three get stuck saying "Querying". Looking in the computer alerts, I have events showing the following services stopped: Background Intelligent Transfer Service KtmRm for Distributed Transaction Coordinator Distributed Transaction Coordinator Microsoft Exchange Information Store Microsoft Exchange System Attendant Microsoft Exchange Transport Windows Remote Management Update Services Windows Update I figured I must have configured something wrong accidentally and I couldn't find anything using Google explaining what might be the case, so I just decided to format the hard drive and reinstall SBS from scratch. I did this and everything was working last night, but I just turned the machine back on and it is doing the same thing again! On my second install, I did not configure anything except the following (all from SBS Console): Connect to the Internet (set IP and router address) Turn off customer feedback. Set up internet address. Decline to use a Smart Host for email. Added one standard user account. Since this happened again and I was very careful the second time not to configure anything outside of the SBS Console, I feel like there's something else going on. Right now the machine is on an isolated network that does have internet access. My desktop is the only other machine plugged into this network. Any and all help is appreciated (before I tear my hair out!)

Microsoft has recently released whitepaper on the performance tuning subject of Data Warehousing. Here is the abstract about the whitepaper from official site: In this white paper we discuss two of the new features introduced in SQL Server 2008, Star Join and Few-Outer-Row optimizations. These two features are in SQL Server 2008 R2 as well.  We test the performance of SQL Server 2008 on a set of complex data warehouse queries designed to highlight the effect of these two features and observed a significant performance gain over SQL Server 2005 (without these two features). The results observed also apply to SQL Server 2008 R2.  On average, about 75 percent of the query execution time has been reduced, compared to SQL Server 2005. We also include data that shows a reduction in the number of rows processed and improved balance in parallel queries, both of which highlight the important role the Star Join and Few Outer-Row features played.   I'm trying to minimize the number of different product versions used on my PC's both at work and at home. So far I have a mixture of: VMware Server 1.0.7 VMware Server 2.0.2 VMware Player 2.5.3 VMware Player 3.0.0 and I would love to upgrade each product family to the latest version. Since Virtual Machine Mobility Guide is marked as deprecated, can anyone point me to some fresh information about virtual machine compatibility between VMware Player and VMware Server, in order to still be able to move virtual machines back and forth between the mentioned products? Update What I'm looking for is an updated document with virtual machines hardware versions, and the VMware products that are able to use that specific hardware version, so I can know - given the products that are using a specific virtual machine - what is the maximum hardware version that I can update the virtual machine to.

• Can't reinstall VLC

  I use VLC a lot. And when 2.0 came out Ubuntu did not update to that version, the REPO had the older version even months later, So I added the daily repo: http://ppa.launchpad.net/videolan/stable-daily/ubuntu and that worked for a while, after a few months later I received a 'Distribution upgrade' and when I installed it, it removed VLC. when I tried to re-install it gave me a bunch of unmet dependency's, so I disabled the source, ran apt-get update, and tried to install the older VLC, that did not work either. • Installing SQL Server 2005 Express on Windows 8 [closed]

  We have an application that installs a custom instance of Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express as part if the whole installation process. Microsoft states that SQL Server 2005 Express is not compatible with Windows 8, but in reality it seems to install and work perfectly fine. The only problem is that during the installation a dialog appears saying it's not compatible, and offers options to get help online, continue with the installation anyway, or cancel. If you chose to continue anyway on all these incompatibility prompts, then the SQL server instance is installed without any problem whatsoever. Does anyone know if there is a way to suppress these incompatibility messages during the SQL service installation (or any installation, for that matter)?

• XP Pro product keys

  I have a very serious problem. After my XP Home OS was trashed by rogue software - a trial of a thing named TuneUp - I did a clean install, including HDD reformat of Windows XP Pro from a purchased OEM disk. This was Service Pack 2, subsequently upgraded to SP3. I had conclusively mislaid the product key. I had to access data on the machine VERY urgently and I did not then know that under some circumstances Microsoft might agree to provide a replacement. I found what I now know must have been a pirate key on the Net which enabled installation but NOT activation. This of course left me functional but 30 days before meltdown - about 20 days left as I write this. Various retailers want around £100 for retail with matching product key. - this would be paying twice over just to continue use on the same computer. I have neither need nor intention of installing XP Pro on any other computer. I have tried a number of applications claiming to deal with this problem but none of them work. A Belarc profile shows that the pirate key has replaced the original one on the system. I have now found two keys, one of which might be the original, but neither work. I am about to upgrade the HDD and it looks like I will just be passing the problem on when I install XP. I have retrieved a key from the disk, but it is seemingly one Microsoft use in production and does not work. It is 76487-OEM-0015242-71798. The keys I have, one of which which might or might not be the original, are CD87T-HFP4G-V7X7H-8VY68-W7D7M and FC8GV-8Y7G7-XKD7P-Y47XF-P829W (or P819W - I believe it to be the latter, but the box will not accept it). The pirate key which has enabled this install and which is now stored on the system but will not activate is QQHHK-T4DKG-74KG7-BQB9G-W47KG. In these circumstances is it likely that Microsoft would issue a replacement? Is there any other solution? I am not trying to defraud anyone, just to keep on using the product I legitimately bought. • Ubuntu unattended-upgrades stops apache

  This morning i was alerted to the fact that both apache instances serving my app were not responding to requests from my load balancer. I attempted apachectl restart and it said apache was not running. So, i started apache on both instances and got the service up again. • Why does my terrain turn white when I get close to it?

  When I zoom in on my terrain it goes white: The further in I zoom, the greater the whiteness becomes. Is this normal? Is this to speed up rendering or something? Can I turn it off? I'm also getting these error messages in the console over and over again: rc.right != m_GfxWindow-GetWidth() || rc.bottom != m_GfxWindow-GetHeight() and GUI Window tries to begin rendering while something else has not finished rendering! Either you have a recursive OnGUI rendering, or previous OnGUI did not clean up properly. Does this bear any correlation on the issue? Update I create virtual desktops to flit between using the program Deskpot. Turning this program off and restarting has stopped the above errors appearing in the console. However, I still get white terrain when I zoom in. Not a single error message. I've restarted my computer to no avail. I have an Asus NVidia GeForce GTX 760 2GB DDR5 Direct CU II OC Edition Graphics Card. Any known issues? Update I don't think it's fog...

• Limiting game loop to exactly 60 tics per second (Android / Java)

  So I'm having terrible problems with stuttering sprites. My rendering and logic takes less than a game tic (16.6667ms) However, although my game loop runs most of the time at 60 ticks per second, it sometimes goes up to 61 - when this happens, the sprites stutter. I also tried to change the timer used to Nanotime and skiptics to 1000000000/ticksPerSecond, but everything just ran at about 300 ticks per seconds. All I'm attempting to do is to limit my game loop to 60 - what is the best way to guarantee that my game updates never happen at more than 60 times a second? Please note, I do realise that very very old devices might not be able to handle 60 although I really don't expect this to happen - I've tested it on the lowest device I have and it easily achieves 60 tics. So I'm not worried about a device not being able to handle the 60 ticks per second, but rather need to limit it - any help would be appreciated.

• Is it possible to re-lock a bitlocker drive?

  I'm running a partition with bitlocker on a Windows 7 Ultimate machine, which contains secure data that I have to recover infrequently. Unlocking it to access the data is obviously no problem, but is there a way to re-lock the partition when I'm done? • Why doesn't my sound card start? It reports code 10.

  When I installed the XP for first time my sound card was working fine. But only after the first reboot it has stopped working. Under Device Manager, the section "sound video and game controller" the entry YAMAHA Native DS1 WDM Driver, has a exclamation mark on it. On left clicking and selecting properties it shows this message "This device cannot start. (Code 10)". On trying to update driver it says a better driver can not be found. Any idea how I can solve the issue? Update: As suggested by harrymc I uninstalled the device "YAMAHA Native DS1 WDM Driver" , and scanned for hardware changes. The windows detected and installed the soundcard and it started working properly.BUT, after restarting the same problem occurs. So, now everytime I reboot the computer I am stuck to, repeating the process of uninstalling the device to make it work.

• NTFS partitions mount as root instead of user as set in /etc/fstab

  I recently upgraded a server to Ubuntu 12.04 with a fresh install and my NTFS partitions won't mount as user at boot but I can mount them as user manually from the console with $ sudo mount -a. Using ntfsfix reports no problems and chkdisk sees nothing wrong under Windows 7. Are the drives not ready to be mounted at boot and default to root instead of user for some reason? Updating the rule to auto-mount only drives after /dev/sde solved my problem. Thank you again for your reply cartoonist.
