• How seriously would an employer take a job application from an applicant studying at the Open University [closed]

  I ask the question because I am considering applying to a traditional bricks and mortar university to do mathematics, computer science or software engineering. However I am in my late twenties and have a young family so I am seriously considering going down the Open University route and working in the software development industry at the same time. If I do attend Open University, I will definitely study Mathematics. I fell in love with PHP and the common web technologies a few years back and it has slowly progressed into learning C++, Java and also Python. If I spent the next year increasing my knowledge of those languages whilst studying at the Open University, would an employee consider a self taught programmer who is 20% of the way through a Bsc in Mathematics?

• How are trajectories calculated and transmitted to other players in Multi-Player ?

  I play alot of COD4. And can see tracers for gunfire, missles, care packages fall from helicopters etc. There is alot of activity. I am curious to know the algorithm (at a high level) that manages all this action when you have 20 people on a map shooting each other to death ? This question touches on the subject but doesn't ask for a more in-depth answer as to how you the developers go about calculating and transmitting movement and collision detection for projectiles, be it missles/bullets or any other object that is flying through the air in real-time.

• Ubuntu 12.10 - Resolution stuck at 1024x768 using Open Source Radeon Driver

  I'm using Ubuntu 12.10 with an ATI Radeon HD5670 card. I currently have the open source xorg-edgers driver. I've been using this driver interchangeably with the Radeon open source driver since fglrx seems to give me a lot of freezes. So I can't really use proprietary drivers, the Radeon driver seems to be stable for me, the resolution is the only problem. The resolution is stuck at 1024x768, where my monitor's native resolution is 1366x768. How do I enable that resolution? Going to System Settings Display only gives me 800x600 and 1024x768 by the way. And just another question, how do I know if xorg-edgers driver is enabled? When I run sudo lshw -c video, I still see the radeon driver. configuration: driver=radeon latency=0 Thanks a lot in advance!

• Do delegates defy OOP

  I'm trying to understand OOP so I can write better OOP code and one thing which keeps coming up is this concept of a delegate (using .NET). I could have an object, which is totally self contained (encapsulated); it knows nothing of the outside world... but then I attach a delegate to it. In my head, this is still quite well separated as the delegate only knows what to reference, but this by itself means it has to know about something else outside it's world! That a method exists within another class! Have I got myself it total muddle here, or is this a grey area, or is this actually down to interpretation (and if so, sorry as that will be off topic I'm sure). My question is, do delegates defy/muddy the OOP pattern?

• Disabling Bluetooth crashes 3G: can I consider this a bug?

  I'm on an Acer TravelMate 8372G here runnning Ubuntu 11.10 64bit and I get the following weird behaviour: As soon as I turn off bluetoooth, the built-in 3G connection disconnects and Network Manager is unable to reconnect, leaving the following track in syslog: NetworkManager[1205]: <warn> GSM modem enable failed: (32) Unknown error The only way I'm able to reconnect 3G is by going all the way through rfkill unblock bluetooth rfkill block wwan rfkill unblock wwan sudo service network-manager restart My question to you guys: should I file a bug, or is there any any logical connection I'm missing that makes this a feature? = thanks! workflow

• Switching songs - MediaPlayer lags the game

  When the player encounters a boss in the game I'm working on, I want to have the music change. It seems simple enough with the MediaPlayer class to fade out the current song, switch to another, and then fade the new song in. However, at the point where the second song starts, the game freezes for a split second. The songs in question aren't particularly large either - the first song is 1.7mb and the second song is 3.1mb, both mp3 format. • I cannot see the drives on my computer

  I'm a new Ubuntu user and I installed this Ubuntu 12.04 fromn a usb stick. It all went fine(I think) but as I notice, there are no drives shown on the menu. I tried some command in the terminal to see if the drives are available and yes, they are available. My problem is how to make these drives show up on the menu above. Sorry if this question is somewhat vague. (I removed the image because I am not allowed to add an image because I have insufficient reputation)

I have used it in four of my sites. Problem: Google is not using my custom defined title on my homepage. The website is aboveinfranet[dot]com. If I search "above infranet solutions inc" If you open the site, it will show you the right title that I wanted to achieve.

  I just went to my first hackathon (London GreenHackathon) and I want to go to lots more. Specifically, hackathons that have a theme of helping people or making the world a better place in some way. I know about Random Hacks of Kindness and a couple of others but is there some central aggregator that will help me find out about hackathons? Also, if anyone else can suggest specific hackathon initiatives I should check out that would be handy too. • Manually activate Network Manager Applet

  The issue I've is that when I connect via modem through gnome-ppp the Network Manager Applet don't detect a connection and don't let me use the configured VPNs via its interface. How Can I manually activate the Network Manager Applet? What I need is to enable the Network Manager apple in order to use the "VPN Connection" section of the GUI. When I don't have an ethernet cable connected and I connect through a modem the Network Manager applet doesn't enables itself, it is like if don't recognizes the ppp0 interface. My question is: there is a way to force the Network Manager GUI indicator to make it "alive"/"up"/"enabled" in order to use the "VPN Connections"section? Thanks in advance.

So, what significant lost advances that happened on a side track should be revived in the main stream of software? These would be ideas that worked well in their context but a different context appeared and became dominant the context, even though it lacked the idea. It maybe that in the new dominant context one just cannot do something or it requires great effort to be exerted.

• How can I allow a user to stream my videos securely?

  I've got a script that records 10 minute videos from a webcam to video1.mp4 video2.mp4 video3.mp4 video4.mp4 Then records over video1 again in rotation. I'd like one user to be able to view these in winamp or itunes by having a playlist with the four of them on repeat. (This is my way of getting around the many hours of figuring out how to actually livestream from a webcam with VLC). I don't see any examples of things like icecast being used for video, and I don't see any mentions of secure streaming. My question is, is there any way to have these videos be seen securely? I can do things like https on my server, but I don't have great access to the user's machine, so just sharing a directory by samba or sshfs isn't much of an option.

After you select an answer, the system tells you if you are right or wrong and provides an explanation. It provides the percentage of correct answers. Through out my life, I've had milestones where I've sat down and really self evaluate myself. Every-time I've found something negative I've strived to put it right. One of those negatives is pride or arrogance. Sadly the nature of programming has plenty of fuel to endlessly fills ones own ego.   I have a script, and now it's the perfect time to have an option to change theme templates. I was looking forward to store these files in php files, or html files. with CSS file. I looked over some codes and I found that they use brackets to refer to the variable. Here's an example of a template block: <div class='block_div'> <center>{title}</center> {content} </div> I know that I can use PHP vars usering <?=$var;?>. However, I think the one above is better, and I looked over the web to find anything about it but I couldn't. My Question is how I can use these brackets in my php or html code. to let the user changing the template only not the code!

• "Bad apple" algorithm, or process crashes shared sandbox

  I'm looking for an algorithm to handle the following problem, which I'm (for now) calling the "bad apple" algorithm. The problem I've got a N processes running in M sandboxes, where N M. It's impractical to give each process its own sandbox. At least one of those processes is badly-behaved, and is bringing down the entire sandbox, thus killing all of the other processes. If it was a single badly-behaved process, then I could use a simple bisection to put half of the processes in one sandbox, and half in another sandbox, until I found the miscreant. This could probably be extended by partitioning the set into more than two pieces until the badly-behaved process was found. For example, partitioning into 8 sets allows me to eliminate 7/8 of the search space at each step, and so on. The question If more than one process is badly-behaved -- including the possibility that they're all badly-behaved -- does this naive algorithm "work"? Is it guaranteed to work within some sensible bounds?

  I cant work out how to use the rectangle bounds in libgdx I am currently using the superJumper example and have 2or 3 examples with that are pause Bounds = new Rectangle(320 - 64, 480 - 64, 64, 64); this is the pause button in the top right corner resume Bounds = new Rectangle(160 - 96, 240, 192, 36); this is a rectangle resume button in the middle of the page in the menu that comes up when the pause button is pressed. basically my question is aimed at the 360 -64 and 160 -96 because I don't know why this is used I need to create a rectangle that covers the left side of the screen and the same on the right because I want to create a on screen buttons, I have already created the does for these buttons and I have managed to get them to work but I can move the rectangles to where I want.   It's obvious that to gain more customers on any given platform, one of the most important steps to take would be to localize your software into many languages: as many as possible, ideally. However, with independently developed apps, it tends to be difficult to localize into many different languages, due to not having the budget and / or time to do so. My question is if I were to localize my apps into languages other than English on the iOS App Store, which languages should I prioritize? (Maybe the top three or four most important.) • How do we install Unity-2D and dependencies offline?

  We have installed 11.04 32-bit on an old machine that has no internet connection and with a graphics card that is not suitable for running Compiz or Unity. Still, we would like to run Unity-2D on this machine. We are aware of answers to this Question. Sadly Keryx will not run on 11.04 32-bit because of unmet dependencies. Building an offline repository is not an option because of limited storage capacity. Is there any convenient other way to find, download, install, and eventually update unity-2 and all dependencies (preferably from an OS independent download path)?

  for each url on my site, I'm auto-redirecting according to header accept language. The site arch is english version: http://mydomain.com/page spanish version http://es.mydomaina.com/page etc.. The english version is displayed unless I'm seeing a specific language other than en and that I support in the header, and then a redirect occurs. Google says this: For language/country selectors or auto-redirecting homepages, you should add an annotation for the hreflang value "x-default" as well: My pages aren't language selectors, nor are they the homepage. But I am auto-redirecting. My question is, should my english version be hreflang="x-default" or/and hrefland="en"?

  I'm trying to research the ways in which games make money. I want to know more about the models they use (free/premium, trial/subscription, free-to-play with micro-transactions, etc.). In addition, I want information on which models work for which games, what models are best for which age groups, etc. I've tried my best to find information, and Google hasn't turned anything up at all. I think I'll stop by my University's library and see if there's anything there. This may seem like a broad question, but I'm looking for links and titles of books, not typed-out answers.

• 3D architecture app for Android or iPhone

I have various options such as learning OpenGL ES, UDK or Unity3d but I want to create models(e.g architecture etc) in my app and then render them when user is finished modeling. • About floating point precision and why do we still use it

  Floating point has always been troublesome for precision on large worlds. This article explains behind-the-scenes and offers the obvious alternative - fixed point numbers. Some facts are really impressive, like: "Well 64 bits of precision gets you to the furthest distance of Pluto from the Sun (7.4 billion km) with sub-micrometer precision. " Well sub-micrometer precision is more than any fps needs (for positions and even velocities), and it would enable you to build really big worlds. My question is, why do we still use floating point if fixed point has such advantages? Most rendering APIs and physics libraries use floating point (and suffer it's disadvantages, so developers need to get around them). Are they so much slower? Additionally, how do you think scalable planetary engines like outerra or infinity handle the large scale? Do they use fixed point for positions or do they have some space dividing algorithm?
