  All, I have a Custom object which I have written using VB.NET (.net 2.0). The object instantiates its own threading.timer object and carries out a number of background process including periodic interrogation of an oracle database and delivery of emails via smtp according to data detected in the database. All functionality passed testing when deployed from VS2005 on my development PC, however when deployed on a true target machine, the service would not start and responds with the following message: "The service on local computer started and then stopped..." Am I going about this the correct way? If not how can I best implement my incident manager within the confines of the Windows Service class. It seems pointless to implement a timer for the incidentmanager because this already implements its own timer... Any assistance much appreciated. Kind Regards Paul J.

• Due Date set via EWS is wrong in reminder popup

  I'm having some trouble using EWS with tasks and reminders, specifically, the due date. When I run my code, shown below, the task is added to my exchange account and I can see it fine in outlook. All the data in it looks fine too. However, if I specify to have a reminder for the task, the due date it shows is very wrong. It's usually 17 hours in the future, but the screenshot I've provided shows it being 19 hours in the future. I'm finding it very strange that if I open the task, the due date looks fine, but the reminder is saying it is due well into the future. Any ideas? • Django QuerySet API: How do I join iexact and icontains?

  Hello, I have this join: lawyers = Lawyer.objects.filter(last__iexact=last_name).filter(first__icontains=first_name) This is the site If you try Last Name: Abbas and First Name: Amr it tells you that amr abbas has 1 schoolmates. But if you try First name only it says that there are no lawyers in the database called amr (obviously there is). If I change (last__iexact=last_name) to (last__icontains=last_name) then leaving Last Name blank works fine and amr is found. But with last__icontains=last_name if you search for "collin" you also get "collins" and "collingwood" which is not what I want. Do you know how I can use iexact and also have it ignored if it is blank? • IIS6 configuration for WCF/Silverlight

  I am trying the simple senario of running a WCF service to return Active directory information on a user. (http://rouslan.com/2009/03/20-steps-to-get-together-windows-authentication-silverlight-and-wcf-service/) using Silverlight 4 & .net 4 However, I am being driven insane by trying to set this up in IIS. Currently I have my solution working in VS, but when I try to run the service in ISS a debug window tries to open... (and I can't get rid of it, is is complaining about the WCF call). <basicHttpBinding> <binding name="winAuthBasicHttpBinding"> <security mode="TransportCredentialOnly"> <transport clientCredentialType="Ntlm"/> </security> </binding> </basicHttpBinding> The Insanity: I have got the IIS to successfully call a WCF service (but can't reproduce), I have created 5 projects to try and get this working, but in my 5th I can't even browse the site (says it can't download silverlight application, but mime type are setup). My next step is to install Server2008 on a test machine and try IIS7... as all the various walkthrough's I have found just dont seem to work in IIS6.

• Apache Tomcat under Windows: Changing webapps default directory

  I am deploying my Java application with Ant. Unfortunately my test deployment on the local machine doesn't work because of Vista. The Program Files directionaries are protected and i don't want to start Ant or Eclipse as an Admin. So i had the idea to move my webapps folder to a workspace subfolder, so i can use relative paths in Ant as well. The solutions seems to be to modify the Host element in the server.xml. With Linux it isn't such a deal: <Host name="localhost" appBase="/path/to/webapps" unpackWARs="true" autoDeploy="true" xmlValidation="false" xmlNamespaceAware="false"> But with Windows i don't get it right. The problem is that when I hit save, the ID changes from 0 to its db value. So the question is how can I have an equatable object, being properly hashed. Please help me find what's wrong in the GetHashCode function (by ID) and what can I change to make it work. Thanks a lot.

• What AOP tools exist for doing aspect-oriented programming at the assembly language level against x8

  Looking for a tool I can use to do aspect-oriented programming at the assembly language level. For experimentation purposes, I would like the code weaver to operate native application level executable and dynamic link libraries. I have already done object-oriented AOP. I know assembly language for x86 and so forth. I would like to be able to do logging and other sorts of things using the familiar before/after/around constructs. I would like to be able to specify certain instructions or sequences/patterns of consecutive instructions as what to do a pointcut on since assembly/machine language is not exactly the most semantically rich computer language on the planet. If debugger and linker symbols are available, naturally, I would like to be able to use them to identify subroutines' entry points , branch/call/jump target addresses, symbolic data addresses, etc. I would like the ability to send notifications out to other diagnostic tools. Thus, support for sending data through connection-oriented sockets and datagrams is highly desirable. So is normal logging to files, UI, etc. This can be done using the action part of an aspect to make a function call, but then there are portability issues so the tool needs to support a flexible, well-abstracted logging/notifying mechanism with a clean, simple yet flexible. The goal is rapid-QA. The idea is to be able to share aspect source code braodly within communties as well as publicly. So, there needs to be a declarative security policy file that users can share. This insures that nothing untoward that is hidden directly or indirectly in an aspect source file slips by the execution manager. The policy file format needs to be simple to read, write, modify, understand, type-in, edit, and generate. Sort of like Java .policy files. Think the exact opposite of anything resembling XML Schema files and you get the idea. Is there such a tool in existence already?

• How to use a viewstate'd object as a datasource for controls on a user control

  I've got a listview on a control. Each row comprises a checkbox and another listview. The problem I'm getting is that after every postback (specifically after checking or unchecking one of the rows' checkbox) my viewstate is empty. Thiss means that any changes I make to my viewstate'd object is lost. Now, I've worked out (after much googling and reading, amongst many others, Scott Mitchel's excellent bit on ViewState) that during initial databinding IsTrackingViewState is set to false. That means, I think, that assigning the return from GetWebServiceProductLineChargeDetails() to the ViewState item in my Property Get during the initial databind won't work. Mind you, even when the IsTrackingViewState is true and I call the Property Get, come the next postback, the viewstate is empty. So do you chaps have any ideas on how I keep the object referenced by the ObjectDataSource in ViewState between postbacks and update it and get those changes to stay in ViewState? • wcf 4.0 service on IIS7

  I am currently developing a service with wcf 4.0 (visual studio 2010 RC). When I try my service on the Visual Studio Development Server, it all works perfect. However, when I tree to run my service on IIS7 on a windows 7 machine, the service doesn't work anymore. (I already changed the framework version on my application pool). When I call an operation on the service, like the default operation GetData when I create a service, I get an error. I used the WCF test client to connect to the service. When I call the operation on the service, the Visual Studio Just-In-Time debugger shows the following message: An unhandled win32 exception occured in w3wp.exe The Just-In-Time debugger was launched without necessary security permissions. To debug this proces, the JIT debugger must be run as an administrator. Would you like to debug the proces? As far as I know, I am running Visual Studio as an administrator and this is probably the process that starts the JIT debugger. The only option I have is to debug the W3WP process, which is probably not the right thing to do. What can I do the make the Service to run on IIS7?

  Here is a question regarding some details how SiteMinder secures access to the SharePoint 2007. I've read a bunch of materials regarding this and have some picture for SharePoint 2010 FBA claims-based + SiteMinder security (can be wrong here, of course): SiteMinder is registered as a trusted identity provider for the SharePoint; It means (to my mind) that SharePoint has no need to go into all those user directories like AD, RDBMS or whatever to create a record for user being granted access to SharePoint - instead it consumes a claims-based id supplied by SiteMinder SiteMinder checks all requests to SharePoint resources and starts login sequence via SiteMinder if does not find required headers in the request (SMSESSION, etc.) SiteMinder creates a GenericIdentity with the user login name if headers are OK, so SharePoint recognizes the user as authenticated But in the case of SharePoint 2007 with FBA + SiteMinder, I cannot find an answer for questions like: Does SharePoint need to go to all those user directories like AD to know something about users (as SiteMinder is not in charge of providing user info like claims-based ids)? So, SharePoint admin should configure SharePoint FBA to talk to these sources? Let's say I'm talking to a Web Service of SharePoint protected by SiteMinder. Shall I make a Authentication.asmx-Login call to create a authentication ticket or this schema is somehow changed by the SiteMinder? If such call is needed, do I also need a SiteMinder authentication sequence? What prevents me from rewriting request headers (say, manually in Fiddler) before posting request to the SharePoint protected by SiteMinder to override its defence? Pity, but I do not have access to deployed SiteMinder + SharePoint, so need to investigate some question blindly. Thanks.

  I'm having one hell of a time trying to get my databinding to work correctly. I have reason to believe that what I'm trying to accomplish can't be done, but we'll see what answers I get. I've got a UserControl. This UserControl contains nothing more than a button. Now within the code behind, I've got a property name IsBookmarked. When IsBookmarked is set, code is run that animates the look of the button. The idea is that you click the button and it visually changes. We'll call this UserControl a Bookmark control. Now I have another control, which we'll call the FormControl. My FormControl contains a child Bookmark control. I've tried to do databinding on my Bookmark control, but it's not working. • How should I go about implementing a points-to analysis in Maude?

  I'm going to implement a points-to analysis algorithm. I'd like to implement this analysis mainly based on the algorithm by Whaley and Lam. Whaley and Lam use a BDD based implementation of Datalog to represent and compute the points-to analysis relations. The following lists some of the relations that are used in a typical points-to analysis. Note that D(w, z) :- A(w, x),B(x, y), C(y, z) means D(w, z) is true if A(w, x), B(x, y), and C(y, z) are all true. BDD is the data structure used to represent these relations. So, I thought I might be able to use Maude instead of a Datalog engine to compute the relations of my points-to analysis. I assume Maude propagates independent information concurrently. And this concurrency could potentially make my points-to analysis faster than sequential processing of rules. But, I don't know the best way to represent my relations in Maude. Should I implement BDD in Maude myself, or Maude's internal unification based on BDD has the same effect?

• In a digital photo, how can I detect if a mountain is obscured by clouds?

  The problem I have a collection of digital photos of a mountain in Japan. However the mountain is often obscured by clouds or fog. What techniques can I use to detect that the mountain is visible in the image? I am currently using Perl with the Imager module, but open to alternatives. All the images are taken from the exact same position - these are some samples. My naïve solution I started by taking several horizontal pixel samples of the mountain cone and comparing the brightness values to other samples from the sky. This worked well for differentiating good image 1 and bad image 2. However in the autumn it snowed and the mountain became brighter than the sky, like image 3, and my simple brightness test started to fail. Image 4 is an example of an edge case. I would classify this as a good image since some of the mountain is clearly visible. UPDATE 1 Thank you for the suggestions - I am happy you all vastly over-estimated my competence. Based on the answers, I have started trying the ImageMagick edge-detect transform, which gives me a much simpler image to analyze. convert sample.jpg -edge 1 edge.jpg I assume I should use some kind of masking to get rid of the trees and most of the clouds. Once I have the masked image, what is the best way to compare the similarity to a 'good' image? I guess the "compare" command suited for this job? How do I get a numeric 'similarity' value from this?

• CKEditor instance in a jQuery dialog

  Hey, I am using jQuery to open a dialog window with a textarea transformed into an instance of CKEditor. I'm using the jQuery adapter provided by the CKEditor team but when the dialog window opens up I cannot interact with the editor (it's created but "null" is written in the content space and I can't click on anything or modify the content). This bug report seems to say that by using a patch provided the issue is fixed but it doesn't seem to be working for me... • WCF: How can I send data while gracefully closing a connection?

  I've got a WCF service that offers a Login method. A client is required to call this method (due to it being the only IsInitiating=true). This method should return a string that describes the success of the call in any case. If the login failed, the connection should be closed. The issue is with the timing of the close. I'd like to send the return value, then immediately close the connection. string Login (string name, string pass) { if (name != pass) { OperationContext.Current.Channel.Close (); return "fail"; } else { return "yay"; } } The MSDN states that calling Close on the channel causes an ICommunicationObject to gracefully transition from the Opened state to the Closed state. The Close method allows any unfinished work to be completed before returning. For example, finish sending any buffered messages). This did not work for me (or my understanding is wrong), as the close is executed immediately - WCF does not wait for the Login method to finish executing and return a string but closes the connection earlier. Therefore I assume that calling Close does not wait for the running method to finish. Now, how can I still return a value, then close?

• RegularExpression Validator doesn't display error message.

  I have a regular expression validation control initialized to validate a textbox control. I want users to be able to enter U.S. Currency values ($12,115.85 or 1500.22 etc.). I found a regular expression off of regexlib website that does the trick. The validation control seems to be working except for one crucial thing. If invalid data is entered, the validation text dispalys (a red "*" next to the textbox), but the page will still submit and the error message won't pop up... I thought that the error message is supposed to display and the page won't submit if the validation control detects invalid data. Isn't this automatic with ASP .NET? I have searched extensively on how to create validation controls, but haven't found anything different than what I am already doing. • Editing a labels text value through JavaScript in VB ASP.NET

  I have a simple form containing two text boxes, I am attempting to apply some validation to the first text box using JavaScript. This is the first time I have attempted this and am having some trouble. I have a label beside the text box stating an error, this labels visibility property is set to False. I wish the labels visibility to turn true if the text box is empty when the user loses focus. For this I have used the onBlur option within the tags of the text box. It then calls the JavaScript function and should set the label to Visible but it does not. I have tested to see if it is entering the function by using an alert instead and that works. The problem seems to be trying to alter the visibility property of the label. • UnsatisfiedLinkError: The specified procedure could not be found

  I'm writing some JNI code in C++ to be called from an applet on Windows XP. I've been able to successfully run the applet and have the JNI library loaded and called, even going so far as having it call functions in other DLLs. I got this working by setting up the PATH system environment variable to include the directory all of my DLLs are in. So, the problem, is that I add another call that uses a new external DLL, and suddenly when loading the library, an UnsatisfiedLinkError is thrown. The message is: 'The specified procedure could not be found'. This doesn't seem to be a problem with a missing dependent DLL, because I can remove a dependent DLL and get a different message about dependent DLL missing. From what I've been able to find online, it appears that this message means that a native Java function implementation is missing from the DLL, but it's odd that it works fine without this extra bit of code. Does anyone know what might be causing this? What kinds of things can give a 'The specified procedure could not be found' messages for an UnsatisifedLinkError?

• Generic allocator class without variadic templates?

  I am trying to write a generic allocator class that does not really release an object's memory when it is free()'d but holds it in a queue and returns a previously allocated object if a new one is requested. Now, what I can't wrap my head around is how to pass arguments to the object's constructor when using my allocator (at least without resorting to variadic templates, that is). The alloc() function i came up with looks like this: template <typename... • Clearing canvas with Canvas.drawColor()

  I'm attempting to change the background image of a custom View with some success. The image will change but the problem is that I still see traces of the old image. When I attempt to clear the canvas before drawing the new image, it doesn't appear to work. I create a bitmap to store the image. When changing the image, I call Canvas.drawColor() before drawing the new image but the old image persists. I've tried drawColor(0), drawColor(Color.BLACK), c.drawColor(0, PorterDuff.Mode.CLEAR), and none of the above works. As such, I had to post this for review from more experienced minds than mine.
