• pyopengl: Could it replace c++ ?

  Hi everyone. I'm starting a computer graphics course, and I have to choose a language. Choices are between C++ and Python. I have no problem with C++, python is a work in progress. So i was thinking to go down the python road, using pyopengl for graphics part. I have heard though, that performance is an issue. Is python / pyopengl mature enough to challenge C++ on performance? I realize its a long shot, but I'd like to hear your thoughts, experiences on uses of pyopengl. Thanks in advance.

  I have made a registration program. Making use of mysql database. Can I still use the traditional programming for client applications. If I want to network it. Do I have to modify the codes a little in order to make it work? -Please enlighten me, I'm just a beginner. I don't have any idea on how this works. Do I have to install wampserver only in one computer? I'm using visual studio 2008. Win forms to be exact.

• SSAS 2008/Excel 2007 - Can't see cube

  I have created a cube in SSAS 2008. In BIDS and SSMS I can see it fine. However, I cannot connect through Excel. I have tried both Excel 2003 and Excel 2007. I must support both and neither work. I can see the database but the cubes do not show up. I created a dummy cube in the project using the wizard and deployed that to the same database. In Excel 2003, I can see and connect to the dummy cube. Excel 2007 can't even find the server/instance after adding this cube. I have used another computer and received the same results with Excel 2003. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks for any help you can give me. -Brian

• After installing VS 2010 - Generic Host Process For Win32 Services problem starts.

  After installing VS 2010 trial I am getting this error "Generic Host Process For Win32 Services Encountered A Problem and needs to close. When this message pops my computer just stuck and I can not even restart it normally. I have found one fix on net but after that fix I can not access my LAN. This fix change these values in registry. HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\netbt\parameters TransportBindName HKLM\Software\Microsoft\OLE EnableDCOM If I revert these registry changes then I again start getting 'Generic Host Process For Win32 Services' I have uninstall VS 2010 but this problem persist. This problem is not because of any virus. Any help to fix this or I have to re install Windows. Thanks.

• Specifying path in a preference file in Unison

  I am using Unison to sync a folder on my local computer with one on a server. I am using a unison preference file for this. If I specify the path of the local folder using Method 1 (see below) things work well. But Method 2 does not work. I would like to use something like Method 2 because I want to use the same preference file (synced using Dropbox) on two different computers. But the usernames are different on these two computers and I cannot change the usernames. Any ideas how this can be achieved? Thank you. SmartPaster2010.AddIn, SmartPaster2010.dll, SmartPaster2010.xml Edit: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/19dax6cz.aspx says: "To install the add-in on another computer, the .addin file must be placed in a location where Visual Studio checks for add-ins. These locations are listed in the Options dialog box, in the Environment node, on the Add-in/Macros Security page." I went to Tools Options Environment Add-In/Macro Security, checked some paths put the AddIn files in a couple of these directoryies, restart VS2010 but still no luck!

• Is it posible to Build & Run on TWO iPhones/iPods at once?

  When I connect two iPhones at the same time to my computer and Build and Run a project the app only installs and plays on one of the devices. Now, with the iPhone 3.0, that supports bluetooth peer-to-peer connectivity, to test a multiplayer project you have to install and run it on two devices at the same time. It would be very helpful to be able to do that with one click instead of: install on one phone, disconnect, connect the other, wait a 10 seconds to recognize the phone and install again and run... Is anyone aware of a method to do such a thing? Thanks

• How to use sans-serif family, arial font in matplotlib, in ubuntu 12.04 lts?

  I installed Ubuntu 12.04 LTS and the Scipy stack. I tried to set in matplotlibrc to use sans-serif family, arial font as default. While this has been working on my Windows computer, it reported the following warning: UserWarning: findfont: Font family ['sans-serif'] not found. Falling back to Bitstream Vera Sans (prop.get_family(), self.defaultFamily[fontext])) And it seems that the font is either not installed, or in a wrong name. I think I have installed the TrueType font (by googling), but I'd really appreciate it if anyone could help me to set the font family in the system with the name 'sans-serif' and find the relevant font files that belongs to this folder. • How are integers converted to strings under the hood?

  I suppose the real question is how to convert base2/binary to base10. The most common application of this would probably be in creating strings for output: turning a chunk of binary numerical data into an array of characters. How exactly is this done? my guess: Seeing as there probably isn't a string predefined for each numerical value, I'm guessing that the computer goes through each bit of the integer from right to left, each time incrementing the appropriate values in the char array/base10 notation places. If we take the number 160 in binary (10100000), it would know that a 1 in the 8th place means 128, so it places 1 into the third column, 2 in the second, and 8 in the third. The 1 in the 6th column means 32, and it would add those values to the second and first place, carrying over if needed. After this it's an easy conversion to actual char codes.

  Hi as corollary to this question I wanted to ask if you know how to prevent the poping of dialogue either to ask for password or to ask to insert a certificate. We are currently building a system where we have to use the windows keystore to get certificates that are stored on USB token containing both reader and certificate. Unlike the original question we do not experience problems when loading the keystore but when we are accessing it. If there is only a single certificate in the keystore no problem, we get the appropriate password popup at the appropriate time and that's it. However if a second USB key gets inserted in the system and later removed the entry remains in the keystore and from then-on every time we try to access information in the keystore we get a popup to insert the key. This occurs for every certificates in the store for which the key is not currently connected to the computer. The system we are interfacing with that requires these certificates necessitates that we perform multiple cryptographic operations and to have these popups to come up every times is rather annoying to say the least.

• TFS2010: Single Server Deployment wizard, Bad sharepoint URLs

  Hello Everyone I just installed TFS2010, and set it up with the single server wizard. It installed me Sharepoint Services an let everything working pretty well. But, the sharepoint URLs it generates from the Server name "server". As my setup is without a domain, the URLs work okay only from the server computer, not from the others. I have to give access to LAN clients, and Internet Clients, both connected thought my Public Ip. How can I change those sharepoint IPs from TFS to be generated From the IP, not from the Server's name?? Thanks in advance

• Can someone explain this "endian-ness" function for me?

  Write a program to determine whether a computer is big-endian or little-endian. bool endianness() { int i = 1; char *ptr; ptr = (char*) &i; return (*ptr); } So I have the above function. I don't really get it. ptr = (char*) &i, which I think means a pointer to a character at address of where i is sitting, so if an int is 4 bytes, say ABCD, are we talking about A or D when you call char* on that? and why? Would some one please explain this in more detail? Thanks. So specifically, ptr = (char*) &i; when you cast it to char*, what part of &i do I get?

  Hi, I am supplying a batch script to create a DSN connection in the user computer before they start to use my application. I am using this in a .bat file. ODBCConf ConfigSysDSN "SQL Server" "DSN=CONNAME|SERVER=PCNAME\INSTANCENAME But I want to make sure they will be able to connect to the database, considering the fact that proper drivers may not be installed in their systems. So, is there any way to check the connection from the same batch file and inform the user if something unable to connect to the database? thanks.

• MSMQ.MSMQQueueInfo PathName Not Accepted

  I am using MSMQ.MSMQQueueInfo with jscript on Windows 7 (the latest MSMQ version). This is being run on a domain joined computer. For some reason unknown to me, it just will not accept the PathName I give it (which is in an acceptable format). Here is the code: var qi = new ActiveXObject ("MSMQ.MSMQQueueInfo"); qi.PathName = "FormatName:Direct=OS:mycomputer\\Private$\\myqueue"; I know this PathName works, because I use the exact same path in c#, and that works: queue = new MessageQueue("FormatName:DIRECT=OS:" + contollerName + "\\Private$\\" + queueName); When the code "qi.Open()" in the jscript code attempts to execute, it returns this error message: The queue path name specified is invalid. Has anyone else run into this? Ideas? Comments? Suggestions? Thank you in advance!

• How do I compute the approximate entropy of a bit string?

  Is there a standard way to do this? Googling -- "approximate entropy" bits -- uncovers multiple academic papers but I'd like to just find a chunk of pseudocode defining the approximate entropy for a given bit string of arbitrary length. (In case this is easier said than done and it depends on the application, my application involves 16,320 bits of encrypted data (cyphertext). But encrypted as a puzzle and not meant to be impossible to crack. I thought I'd first check the entropy but couldn't easily find a good definition of such. So it seemed like a question that ought to be on StackOverflow! Ideas for where to begin with de-cyphering 16k random-seeming bits are also welcome...) • Has anyone run VxWorks on a desktop PC as a target

  Can I use a desktop PC to run VxWorks as the operating system? In other words, can a standard PC be used as a target processor? I'm not talking about hosting Workbench and a VxSim on the same machine. Rather, I'm considering running just VxWorks (and my application) on a PC. It seems feasible as long as we can configure a board support package, and write or obtain device drivers for the I/O cards on the PCI bus. What I wonder is, has anyone actually done this? I'm interested in saving a bit of money on hardware over a single board computer and cPCI backplane by using a spare desktop sitting around unused. The application is for a test set to be used in a lab. So, I don't need the portability, etc. of a typical embedded processor.

• Windows XP Home Edition SP3 cant recognise PCMIA SD Card

  System Specifications: Laptop : Dell Inspiron 6000 OS: Windows Home Edition SP3 SD Adapter: Hagiwara Smart Media Adapter I inserted the card into the slot, windows xp recognises the device, lists the pcmia controller on the device manager list, an entry appears under the IDE ATA/ATAPI category on the device manager as well. However, the device does not show under my computer and the driver does not get assigned a letter number. I checked the system logs from the device manager and there were no logged errors. Checking the Hagiwara support website, the manufacturer indicates that the adapter driver is the same as the windows xp pcmia controller. Checking Dell's website, no specific drivers were listed for that either. General Search on the web indicates that multiple people face similar problems with their SD cards, yet none actually spell out the route issue that causes this. Please let me know if you have any suggestions for further debugging. Thanks in advance

• java/swing: Shape questions: serializing and combining

  I have two questions about java.awt.Shape. Suppose I have two Shapes, shape1 and shape2. How can I serialize them in some way so I can save the information to a file and later recreate it on another computer? (Shape is not Serializable but it does have the getPathIterator() method which seems like you could get the information out but it would be kind of a drag + I'm not sure how to reconstruct a Shape object afterwards.) How can I combine them into a new Shape so that they form a joint boundary? (e.g. if shape1 is a large square and shape2 is a small circle inside the square, I want the combined shape to be a large square with a small circular hole)

Computer Spec: Windows 7 Running processes: 46 Running threads: +/- 650 NVidia GeForce 9200M GS Intel Core 2 Duo CPU P8400 @ 2.26Ghz Game-spec with normal run: Memory: between 80 MB and 110 MB CPU: between 9% and 20% CPU when time rewinding: 90% The same values for the debugging session, except when I rewind the time: CPU: 20%. Is there any reason for? Is there a way to reach the same performance with a normal run.   Ok, so for an app I am making, I want the user to be able to save data online. On my website, I will provide a web server with tables of UserName/Password/SaveData. How can I do this without crashing the server load? How can I guarantee security ? Is there a Design Pattern for this?Is there a better way of doing this? This is going to be a free application, available to the public and I would like for their settings to be available, no matter the computer they are using. Is there a better way of doing this? I am using MEF for plugins so is there a way I can save plugin data as well?

• Cannot connect to local database.

  Hi, I have apache and mysql set up on my local machine (Mac). Whenever I go to any of my local sites I get the "Error establishing a database connection" whenever anything mySql related happens. It was working perfectly yesterday, but when I started my computer today it is not. I can login to mysql on the terminal and that all works fine, I can view database and run queries in the terminal. Look at all my table etc. I've tried restarting apache. Anyone know what's up? This is worrying.

• Can Java ServerSocket and Sockets using ObjectIOStreams lose packets?

  I'm using a ServerSocket on my server and Sockets that use ObjectIOStreams to send serializable objects over the network connection. I'm developing an essentially more financial version of monopoly and thus packets being sent and confirmed as sent/received is required. Do I need to implement my own packet loss watcher or is that already taken care of with (Server)Sockets? I'm primarily asking about losing packets during network blips or whatnot, not full connection error. • allowDefinition='MachineToApplication' error when publishing from VS2010 (but only after a previous

  I can run my Asp.Net MVC 2 application without an issue on my local computer. Just Run / Debug. But if I have already built it, I can't publish it! I have to clean the solution and publish it again. I know this is not system critical, but it's really annoying. "One Click Publish" is not "Clean solution and then One click publish" The exact error is as follows: Error 11 It is an error to use a section registered as allowDefinition='MachineToApplication' beyond application level. This error can be caused by a virtual directory not being configured as an application in IIS. I suspect it's something to do with the Web.Config in the Views folder, but then why only after I build once previously. And just to note, the app works fine once published.
