  • How difficult it is to develope Apps for Android and iOS? [on hold]

    - by netsetter
I'm an experienced web developer in PHP, HTML, Javascript, MySQL, CSS and I'm running communities where people can register to be able to login and do some stuff. Now more and more people are requestion an App, I told them that I have no time and experience to develope Apps with many functions for such complex communities I am running, but then the users told me what would be enough for them and this sounds already simpler to me: An app to install on Android / iOS just to be able to login (+ autologin), so they appear always online in the community when they have internet connection. Then only 1 function like a counter of new activities regarding their user account (new messages, new replies, etc..), and if they click on the app then a browser window will open to read the info at the main website. So, what you think, it will be a big thing to develope such an app for the members? Is there a big diffrence between developing for Android and iOS? How to test the App if you don't have an Android or iOS phone in example?

    - by Adam

  • Is there an apt command to download a deb file to the current directory?

    - by Lekensteyn
I am often interested in the installation triggers (postinst, postrm) or certain parts (/usr/share or /etc) of packages. Currently, I am running the next command to retrieve the source code: apt-get source [package-name] The downside is, this file is often much bigger than the binary package and does not reflect the installation tree. Right now, I am downloading the packages through http://packages.ubuntu.com/: Search for [package-name] Select the package Click on amd64/i386 for download Download the actual file This takes too long for me and as someone who really likes the shell, I would like to do something like the next (imaginary) command: apt-get get-deb-file [package-name] I could not find something like this in the apt-get manual page. The most close I found was the --download-only switch, but this puts the package in /var/cache/apt/archives (which requires root permissions) and not in the current directory.

  • Advertisement programs that allow "clickjacking" (earning advertisement revenues by popups generated by clicks on the website)?

    - by Tom
Whether clickjacking is an ethically responsible way of earning advertisement revenues is a subjective discussion and should not be discussed here. However, it appears that quite a lot of popular sites generate "popups" when you click either of their links or buttons. An example is the Party Poker advertisement (I am sure many of you will have seen this one). I wonder though, what kind of advertisement companies allow such techniques? Surely Google Adsense does not? But which do, and are they reliable partners?

  • How to do pre-loading

    - by Dave
I have a question that is confusing me with making a game. For my game launch i pre load everything for the main menu then i loop the game to display it. But lets argue player wants to launch a new game or a specific level, then you preload the relevant sounds/graphics for that level right? How ever, the player must already be running the game loop if they are at the main menu, so you can't load in the game loop or you will load every frame...but im pretty sure most big games don't preload every level when you first run the game from desktop because it would take a long time on some of these games.... How is it done :S

  • T-SQL Tuesday: What kind of Bookmark are you using?

    - by Kalen Delaney
I’m glad there is no minimum length requirement for T-SQL Tuesday blog posts , because this one will be short. I was in the classroom for almost 11 hours today, and I need to be back tomorrow morning at 7:30. Way long ago, back in SQL 2000 (or was it earlier?) when a query indicated that SQL Server was going to use a nonclustered index to get row pointers, and then look up those rows in the underlying table, the plan just had a very linear look to it. The operator that indicated going from the nonclustered...(read more)

  • 404 code/header for search engines, on removed user content?

    - by mowgli
I just got an email, from a former user on my website He was complaining that Google still shows the contact page he created on my site, even though he deleted it a month ago This is the first time in many years anyone requests this I told him, that it's almost entirely up to Google what content it wants to keep/show and for how long. If it's deleted on the site, I can't do much, other than request a re-visit from the googlebot The user-page already now says something like "Not found. The user has removed the content" TL;DR: But the question is: Should I generally add a 404 header (or other) for dynamic user content that has been removed from the site? Or could this hurt the site (SEO)?

  • Integrating feature request functionality directly into the business software you write?

    - by Aaron Anodide
What are relative merits of something like a button on a piece of custom bizware that says, "press me to ask for a feature" or "click here if something didn't work right". The problem I'm trying to remedy is the general lack of formality surrounding feature requests. Most specifically, the rate at which I receive walk-ups from end-users. Taken one at a time, it can be beneficial, but sometimes it can hinder productivity on the larger scale. Has anyone done something like this and has it been a general success or alternately somewhat a waste of time. My instincts are not giving me a hint here.

  • SQL Server 2008 - Management Studio issue

    - by Phil Streiff
This is a known, documented issue with SQL Server 2008 Management Studio, but certain DDL operations like ALTERing a column datatype from Management Studio fails. For example, in Object Explorer, navigate to a table column > right-click on column > Modify. Then, change column datatype or length, then save and this error message displays: To workaround this problem, go to Query Editor and issue the following DDL statement instead:  TABLE dbo.FTPFile ALTER COLUMN CmdLine VARCHAR (100) ; ALTER   GO   The column change is successfuly applied now.

  • Hybrid Columnar Compression

    - by user12620172
You heard me in the past talk about the HCC feature for Oracle databases. Hybrid Columnar Compression is a fantastic, built-in, free feature of Oracle 11Gr2. One used to need an Exadata to make use of it. However, last October, Oracle opened it up and now allows it to work on ANY Oracle DB server running 11Gr2, as long as the storage behind it is a ZFSSA for DNFS, or an Axiom for FC. If you're not sure why this is so cool or what HCC can do for your Oracle database, please check out this presentation. In it, Art will explain HCC, show you what it does, and give you a great idea why it's such a game-changer for those holding lots of historical DB data. Did I mention it's free? • What is the Best Way to Incentivize a Team of Developers?

    - by Seth P.
I know in advance that people are going to see this question and think "free Red Bull." But I am actually looking for the best way to tie rewards for developers to the company's long-term goals. For example, assuming a team is working on the same software product, would it be best to reward each developer based on the condition of the final product? They are a team after all, and this will ensure that they are all working towards the common goal of getting the product out. However, this ignores the fact that some developers are stronger than others and some work harder than others. In your experience, what is the best way to incentivize a team of developers?

  • Extended Events demos on Microsoft Virtual Academy

    - by extended_events
I had an opportunity recently to contribute a presentation to the Microsoft Virtual Academy as part of the Mission Critical Confidence using SQL Server 2012 course offering. The MVA offers you a myriad of free training opportunities, so I encourage anyone who is interested in expanding your knowledge to take advantage of this offering. For those of you who don’t want to invest the time to go through the whole course, you can access my presentation here. I cover the following topics: Integration of Extended Events into AlwaysOn troubleshooting. Troubleshooting Login failures using client/server correlation. Troubleshooting query performance issues using client/server correlation. I’m not sure how long content is made available on MVA, I got the impression that it would be removed as some point in the future, but should be there for at lease several months. - Mike

  • D-fense! D-fense! ...for Java technology

    - by hinkmond
Who needs defense when computing with the Java platform? Isn't "the best defense is a good offense"? At least in football and volleyball... See: The Best Defense Here's a quote: "The other Oracle tester page, Verify Java Version, consistently reports whether the latest version is installed. Just click the big red button to see if the 'recommended' version of Java is installed." So, go ahead and use Java technology! There is "nothing to fear but fear itself". I like that quote better. • A great option for those of us who live by virtual environments, SQL Server 2008 R2 sysprep

    - by Enrique Lima
For a long time when creating images for my development environment, I had to install the OS and then sysprep.  Only after that would I then create a differencing drive/image that would have SQL Server. So, the thought of having a base/core image for SQL Server as a template was not easily done.  Well, how do things change?  SQL Server 2008 R2 gives us the option now. Check this HOW TO provided on the library docs at TechNet.  http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee210664(SQL.105).aspx

  • IE HTML Debugger Causing Issues with IE Enhanced Security

    - by Damon
In an effort to debug a Silverlight component on a page in SharePoint I opened the Developer Tools in Internet Explorer.  After choosing the Find > Select Element by Click option my page refreshed for some reason and a small bar appeared at the top of the page reading: You may be trying to access this site from a secured browser on the server. Please enable scripts and reload this page. After a quick look around the internet, some seemed to be suggesting that you have to disable the Internet Explorer Enhanced Security Configuration (IE ESC) in Server Manager.  Since this is one of the very first things I do when creating a VM, I figured the solution did not apply to me.  However, I decided to go ahead and enable IE ESC and then disable it again to see if that would fix the problem, and it did.  So if you see that error message in IE, the bar and you've already got IE ESC disabled, you can just enable it and disable it to get rid of the bar.

  • Duplicating content from another site and adding value (summaries, statistics) - ranking and courtesy

    - by Krastanov
I am working on a site that takes a governmental data base, provides a number of statistical and other summaries and also post the original data. However this data (mostly long pieces of text) is also published on the official governmental site (without the added value of summaries). Should I worry about google ranking due to this duplication? What is the preferred way to point to the official source of the information? There is no advertisement on my site. My site is ".com". The governmental site is ".bg".
