• An online version of ClearTrace

  When I visit clients for the first time and conduct a performance review I introduce them to ClearTrace. It’s still the best way I know to identify exactly which queries are consuming the most resources.  The downside is that it needs to be downloaded and create a database to store the results.  I finally decided it would be easier if I could just upload a trace immediately. You can find the online version of ClearTrace at TraceTune.com.  It provides a simple way to upload a trace file and see exactly which stored procedures or SQL statements consume the most CPU and disk.   This is still a work in progress as I try to determine exactly which features from ClearTrace are important.  I’ve also limited the file upload to 10MB in this beta release.  That might not sound like much but I get over 20,000 events using this stored procedure to generate the trace. If you’re looking for something to do on a Friday, I’d suggest a little performance tuning.  Generating 10MB of trace data doesn’t take long at all and in a short time you’ll see exactly which SQL statements you need to tune first.

  Well ? from comments here and elsewhere, the two most worst things seemed to be the the removal of 32-bit support and removal of support for certain components. Just to set things into perspective: Solaris 10 was released 2005, the newsest class of machines not supported by it were the Ultra1. This one was released 1995. The UltraSPARC-Systems not able to run on Solaris 11 were released 2001. Well ? we have 2011 now ?. Regarding 32-bit support: Well ? I don't think "playing around with Solaris on old gear" is the problem. At first, most people are playing around with virtual machines. But there is something different: 64-bit computing was introduced for x86 in 2003 (yes ? it's really that old). I think this move is more hurting to the people using boards with the first-gen Intel Atom "Silverthorne" as small file servers. And then Solaris 10 won't disappear with Solaris 11

• How to start Sharepoint Development - Resources wanted [closed]

  I'm a apprentice for software development here in good ol' Germany and I've been doing fairly well with c#, asp.net mvc, entity framework and LINQ so far. My superiors want me to focus solely on our intranet development and Sharepoint development. They don't provide me with any resources to start. No books, no co-workers with actual webpart-dev-experience, seminars and the likes. There for it's do it on your own or die. I bought a book and started working through it on my virtual machine messing with the infrastructure and everything i can get a grip on. My main problem however stays the actual development. I have managed to write 2 webparts which can be used as a rudimentary ticket system(using WSP Builder and SP2007). But there it stops. Are there any comprehensive step by step tutorials or blogs out there, like the asp.net tutorials on www.asp.net which take you by the hand go over each step with you? Starting with the basic classes, going over custom css implementation, Jquery/Javascript ajax and async calls? No matter how trivial, I appreciate every help and hint you can give.

• PC shuts down when installing ubuntu?

  I'm now using ubuntu from USB, and I'd like to install ubuntu on my hard disk. I tried the option of removing Vista while installing ubuntu. However, near the end of the installation process (presumably the end because I can see some slideshows on how to start using ubuntu), the screen suddenly goes to black with white words running around on it. Soon the computer shuts down. After that, restarting leads to a black screen with only a small white cursor on the top left corner. The cursor keeps blinking and nothing happens. I found that I can alternatively choose to boot with USB by hitting F12 just when the computer starts. So I tried to reinstall ubuntu by running ubuntu on USB. One of the options of installation is to update ubuntu 11.04 to ubuntu 11.04, so it seems the ubuntu is already installed somehow. Anyways, I tried both update and delete and install option but the same thing happens as the 1st time (sometimes before reaching the end), while I still cannot start my PC as ubuntu (without USB). How may I install ubuntu properly?

• Ubuntu 12.04 hangs on install using VMware Player on Windows 7

  At my job, we're migrating to Ubuntu 12.04 from 10.10 (we skipped a generation), so everyone needs to make one or more new Virtual Machines for 12.04 on their Windows 7 workstation. The problem is, only some have had success while most encounter a hang during install. I was tasked with researching this problem and here are my findings (while somewhat inconclusive) I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling VMware Player, using versions 4.0.2, 4.0.4, and 5.0.0 but every install hangs at "retrieving file 55 of 129." Additionally I have installed before updating the VMware tools, as well as after (one can pre-download them) with every install hanging at "retrieving file 55 of 129." The file i was using for the above two is called: ubuntu-12.04-desktop-amd64.iso I have burned a disc with ubuntu-12.04.1-desktop-amd64.iso and tried to install it, and later tried ubuntu-12.04.1-desktop-i386.iso (which is not what i want but i wanted to see if it would work), but both times I get "PXE-E53: No boot filename recieved PXE-M0F: Exiting Intel PXE ROM. Operating System not found" This is all in VMware and the goal is to find a settings recipe that will allow an unbroken 64bit Ubuntu 12.04 install from an .iso hosted on the Windows OS. • Guidelines for creating referentially transparent callables

  In some cases, I want to use referentially transparent callables while coding in Python. My goals are to help with handling concurrency, memoization, unit testing, and verification of code correctness. I want to write down clear rules for myself and other developers to follow that would ensure referential transparency. I don't mind that Python won't enforce any rules - we trust ourselves to follow them. Note that we never modify functions or methods in place (i.e., by hacking into the bytecode). Would the following make sense? A callable object c of class C will be referentially transparent if: Whenever the returned value of c(...) depends on any instance attributes, global variables, or disk files, such attributes, variables, and files must not change for the duration of the program execution; the only exception is that instance attributes may be changed during instance initialization. When c(...) is executed, no modifications to the program state occur that may affect the behavior of any object accessed through its "public interface" (as defined by us). If we don't put any restrictions on what "public interface" includes, then rule #2 becomes: When c(...) is executed, no objects are modified that are visible outside the scope of c.__call__. • Windows Recovery from Grub messed up my computer?

  Ok so I'm a noob when it comes to Operating Systems and I think I really messed up this time. So I have a laptop that dual boots Windows 7 and Linux Mint 11. I was trying to boot into Windows 7 but it would just have a black screen with a blinking cursor. So I turned off my computer and tried again. Still a black screen with a cursor. So I thought "well it must be broken somehow and I remembered seeing something like 'Windows Recovery' from the boot menu so I should try it." So when I turned on my computer a third time I selected 'Windows Recovery' (Something like that I can't remember exactly what it was called). After I had selected that I got a white Windows window that said in big red letters "ERROR". I turned off my computer again a turned it back on expecting the Grub menu to reappear. I was wrong. Instead I am greeted with error: no such partition grub rescue. Then I put in a live CD for ubuntu 11.04 and tried looking at my partitions using the disk manager. Looking at my partitions I notice that there isn't a Linux partition anymore and in its place is a unallocated space partition yet the Linux Swap partition is still there. My windows partition is still fine and I can access the files in it. If you understand what has happened, is there anyway I can get my files back? I don't care about reinstalling the OS again. I just want those files that are in the Linux Mint partition.

• Google Music Player doesn't work

  I'm trying to log in on Google Music Player application but doesn't work. I get the message below: Login Failed Could not identify your computer. Learn More On Google Help it says that it doesn't run on virtual machines, which is not my case, but I have a virtualbox installed though, and it says some people get to work if they disable their bridge network. The thing is I don't have any bridge interface, even if I remove all virtualbox modules I still get this message. • Partition tool with console UI (as in server installation)?

  Back in 2006, Ray (3DLover) posted the same question in: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=309680 but none of the answers were really useful. Now with a little help from AskUbuntu community, I would like to repeat his question again to see if this time it can be answered correctly. So this is the question (and what I wish too): I'm looking for a UI tool for managing partitions in a console. I have installed Ubuntu Server, so I don't have X Windows at all. fdisk and sfdisk are entirely command line. parted is slightly better, but it's not really a UI. cfdisk has somewhat of a UI, but it only works on one disk at a time, and there's no advanced options like configuring LVM or RAID. Just partitioning. I love the partition tool that is available during the OS install procedure. You can partition, configure RAID's and LMV sets. It can format the partitions with several different file systems, it can set labels, mount options and it can insert your volumes into your fstab. Is this tool available as a stand-alone program? I can't find it anywhere. I think it's called parted_server, but I can't find much information about where to get it. In the past, I have run the Ubuntu install procedure just to use the partition manager that comes with it. (canceling the install after making my partition edits) Anyone help me on this? • Dark NetBeans

  Let's make NetBeans IDE look like this. Not saying it's a nice color or anything, just that it's possible to do so: I changed the coloring in the Java editor by going to Tools | Options, then chose "Fonts & Colors", then selected the "Norway Today" profile and changed the background setting to Dark Gray. Next, I put this themes.xml file into the "config" folder of the NetBeans IDE user directory, which you can identify as such by going to Help | About in the IDE. Go to the exact location defined by "User directory" in Help | About, and then go to the "config" folder within that folder: The "config" folder of the user directory is the readable/writable root of the NetBeans IDE virtual filesystem. If a themes.xml file is found there, it is used, as described here. Then, in netbeans.conf file, which is not in the NetBeans user directory but in the NetBeans installation directory, within its "etc" folder, I added the following to "netbeans_default_options": -J-Dnetbeans.useTheme=true --laf Metal The first of these enables usage of the themes.xml file, i.e., it notifies NetBeans IDE at startup to load the themes.xml file and to apply the content to the relevant UI components, while the second is needed because most/all of the themes only work if you're using the Metal Look and Feel. Note: I must add that in most cases, whatever it is you're trying to achieve via a themes.xml file can probably be achieved in a different, and better, way. The themes.xml mechanism has been there forever, but is not actively supported or tested, though it may work for the specific thing you're trying to do anyway. For example, if you're trying to change the background color of a TopComponent, use the paintComponent method of the TopComponent instead of using a themes.xml file.

• What packages are safe to uninstall to reduce installation size?

  This question is similar to a previous question I asked How can I turn my desktop Ubuntu 8.04 into a command line only install?. I was wondering if anyone can recommend any other bulky packages from the standard 8.04 installation that can reduce the size on disk of my installation. All I really require is socket functionality, g++ and gcc, some kind of text editor and SSH client and server. Things that I don't require are things like media players, audio packages, and the more "superficial" kind of desktop niceties. Is there anything particularly large in a standard install that is safe for me to remove without compromising my requirements above? I am a bit apprehensive about trying to uninstall items and I am not totally confident about removal of particular things having a negative effect on the functionality of any other things I might need (an example is would it be safe for me to remove everything to do with Perl, or does the system/kernel/other processes require this) ??? Basically I would like to be left with the kind of items that would have been installed in the CLI version of 8.04 (had the alternative iso image not been faulty). Any help/suggestions would be gratefully received.

• Is text-only mode a saving or a problem for battery savings?

  A friend is flying to the US from Europe and asked me a very thought-provoking question, which I am not remotely able to answer with substance so I am asking it here: How to absolutely maximise battery life on an Ubuntu (laptop) install? do not rush to mark this as duplicate, there is an important point here: does -GNOME- help or worsen battery life? Let me provide some context: The only task he needs to perform is: edit text files in Vim. He is unsure whether running GNOME will drain his battery life more or actually save him some battery life given the smarts of GNOME's power management features like "switch this peripheral to -power save- after X minutes..." (GNOME might just be a configuration front-end for settings that are governed by command-line utils for all I know?) He could perfectly well boot the system in text-only mode and use the automatic 6 virtual consoles for his needs, if that's a saving at all over running tmux (I think so because of all the smart buffering/history/etc the latter does by default?) Exactly how would you advise him to run his laptop during his flight? What I told him already: power off WiFi in the BIOS, not from the "GUI" power off Bluetooth switch off the courtesy light and use low monitor brightness play music off of his phone, not mp3blaster do not use his tiny portable mouse (and do not attach any other USB gimmicks like "screen light", etc) stop development services he will not be using, especially apache2, tomcat, dovecot, postgresql, etc. Potentially: - switch off his cron jobs? (he does an rsync + tar + 7za of his "work in progress" every so often) I think the above is standard stuff one could get off StackExchange, and with many duplicates... the core of this question is, I think: __ will running Ubuntu in text-only mode be a saving in terms of battery life or a problem? why? (provide some technical arguments) __ I think it will be a saving but I am also scared about "other things" detecting and enabling advanced chipset power management features only when some services are started.. and fear these "services" may be off in text-only mode?

• Re-installing Ubuntu without losing files, how to?

  Sometime back i bought a second PC to serve as my backup machine, but i've never managed to have it as i would like. Now i want to start over, but i've messed so much with it's disks that i'm kinda afraid to lose something on the way, thus this question. Right now, I have a 1Tb disk partitioned like this (as per GParted): /dev/sda1 (ext4) 346.12Gb - Is almost full, has an old install of Ubuntu 11.10. It no longer boots, ever since i installed Windows7 on /sda3. Everything that matters to me is tucked into /var/www/ all the rest can just go. /dev/sda2 (ext4) 196.45Gb - has an old install of 12.04 and nothing important, it's pretty much empty and also doesn't boot. /dev/sda3 (ntfs) 377.97Gb - is my boot partition with Windows 7, some important files and I'd like to keep it untouched. /dev/sda4 (extended) 10.97Gb - was created when i first installed Ubuntu, i think. In my ideal world, I'd like to safely reinstall Ubuntu from the 12.04 liveUSB and merge sda1 and sda2 without losing any files. Is that possible? How?

• Error on /home prevents OS boot

  Ok, I'll try to explain it listing the events: motherboard battery is weak, loses config everytime I shut the PC down; system clock usually back to 1990-something; this time, it went up to 2148; ubuntu became somewhat unusable (firefox refusing certificates, dropbox blocked), so I restarted; manually set the clock to current date and restarted; during boot, ubuntu detects errors and start auto-fix, rebooting itself in the middle of it (like a hard reboot, no shutdown messages) next time, shows boot animation screen in text mode, with an error message after a while: "Errors were found while checking the disk drive or /home", with "attempt to fix, ignore, skip mounting or manual recovery" None of the options during the boot work, they just type the text to the screen, then I'm forced to physically restart. Now I'm using Mint LXDE live CD, and I can see all my partitions just fine, including /home (my home folder blocked due to encryption, the other user folder is accessible and everything in place). I'm not sure how to proceed now. I'd like to just fix ubuntu boot without reinstalling or anything like it (at least until 12.04). What should I do now? can I easily fix this somewhow? Thanks!

• New functionality in TFS Build Manager &ndash; Managing Triggers and Build Resources

  Yesterday we pushed out a new release (August 2012) of the Community TFS Build Extension, including a new version of the Community TFS Build Manager (1.0.4.6) The two big new features in the Build Manager in this release are: Set Triggers It is now possible to select one or more build definitions and update the triggers for them in one simple operation: You’ll note that we have started collapsing the context menu a bit, the list of commands are getting long! When selecting the Trigger command, you’ll see a dialog where the options should be self-explanatory: The only thing missing here is the Scheduled trigger option, you’ll have to do that using Team Explorer for now.   Manage Build Resources The other feature is that it is now possible to view the build controllers and agents in your current collection and also perform some actions against them. The new functionality is available by select the Build Resources item in the drop down menu: Selecting this, you’ll see a (sort of) hierarchical view of the build controllers and their agents: In this view you can quickly see all the resources and their status. You can also view the build directory of each build agent and the tags that are associated with them. On the action menu, you can enable and disable both agents and controllers (several at a time), and you can also select to remove them. By selecting Manage, you’ll be presented with the standard Manage Controller dialog from Visual Studio where you can set the rest of the properties. Hopefully we’ll be able to implement most of the existing functionality so that we can remove that menu option Our plan is to add more functionality to this view, such as adding new agents/controllers, restarting build service hosts, maybe view diagnostic information such as disk space and error logs.   Hope you’ll find the new functionality useful.   I'm trying to learn more about library versioning in Linux and how to put it all to work. Here's the context: I have two versions of a dynamic library which expose the same set of interfaces, say libsome1.so and libsome2.so. An application is linked against libsome1.so. This application uses libdl.so to dynamically load another module, say libmagic.so. Now libmagic.so is linked against libsome2.so. Obviously, without using linker scripts to hide symbols in libmagic.so, at run-time all calls to interfaces in libsome2.so are resolved to libsome1.so. This can be confirmed by checking the value returned by libVersion() against the value of the macro LIB_VERSION. So I try next to compile and link libmagic.so with a linker script which hides all symbols except 3 which are defined in libmagic.so and are exported by it. This works... Or at least libVersion() and LIB_VERSION values match (and it reports version 2 not 1). However, when some data structures are serialized to disk, I noticed some corruption. In the application's directory if I delete libsome1.so and create a soft link in its place to point to libsome2.so, everything works as expected and the same corruption does not happen. I can't help but think that this may be caused due to some conflict in the run-time linker's resolution of symbols. I've tried many things, like trying to link libsome2.so so that all symbols are alised to symbol@@VER_2 (which I am still confused about because the command nm -CD libsome2.so still lists symbols as symbol and not symbol@@VER_2), but nothing seems to work. What am I doing wrong?

• Librated error when creating partition table

  I bought a Dell Inspiron 5521 laptop a few days ago that came with Ubuntu preinstalled. I haven't used Ubuntu yet, and I don't have any experience in using it. I wanted to install Windows 7 64-bit on my laptop alongside Ubuntu, and made two bootable USB drives with Gparted and Windows 7. There wasn't a suitable partition on my laptop in which I could install Windows 7. I've read the instructions for using Gparted to create or manage my hard drive. I inserted the USB, booted from BIOS, and followed the procedure in installing Gparted. Then I entered Gparted, and the following error occurred: Librated error when Creating partition table. It asked me to click on either OK or Cancel. Either way I had my hard disk shown to me in the user window, in partitions that were made by the manufacturer: Partition File sys Label Size Flags /dev/sda1 fat32 dellutility 300.00 Mib diag /dev/sda2 fat32 os 3.00 Gib lba /dev/sda3 ext4 912.46 Gib boot /dev/sda4 extended 15.75 Gib (had a subpart) /dev/sda5 linux-swap 15.75 Gib ...and a option to switch to dev/sdb that's unused and of capacity 3Gib. I've used the biggest partition 912.46 Gib, and tried to reduce its size, and clicked OK. Then when I tried to make a new partition, it said it can't make any more partitions, no more than a maximum of 5. I would like to keep Ubuntu and slowly learn, but I also need to use programs that work in Windows. Thank you for taking the time to answer my question.
