• DVI-D Splitter Not Working with GeForce 8400gs

  I have a GeForce 8400gs and it has a DVI and VGA port on the back. I was using dual monitors with one VGA and one DVI cable. I wanted both displays to be digital so I bought a DVI-D splitter and put one DVI cable in each monitor, connected them to the splitter and put the single merged connection in the back of the cards DVI connection. It will not recognize the second monitor (I'm not even sure how it determined which one was the first monitor). The tech specs state that it supports "Two dual-link DVI outputs for digital flat panel display resolutions up to 2560x1600" http://www.nvidia.com/object/geforce_8400_tech_specs.html. Do I need a different converter or is my only option for dual monitors with this card one VGA, one DVI?

• How to measure startup time and order of Windows services on boot?

  I am not asking how to measure server startup time here. I am wondering if anyone knows of a tool that can measure and show a graph of the startup time and order of all the windows services during system startup. I saw a software program shown on my local Portland news last week that does this but I am unable to remember what it was called or anything else about it. All I remember is that it was a "tech" news story to help computer users with their computers. So, I know the software exists and I am trying to find it.

• How to backup metro "app" data, manually

  I'm a PC tech and I have been getting more and more Windows 8 issues. First off I hate metro, and secondly I hate "apps". I like to do fresh installs of Windows8. I backup my user's data and then fresh install. Assuming there is no recovery partition how can I manually backup the user's app data so that in the event of a reformat I simply redownload their apps (dumb, I wish there was a way to actually back them up too) and plop the data back in. Do most normal people even use "apps", or do they use Windows8 like a desktop OS? I totally dropped metro with ClassicShell.

• Static noise coming from my laptop

  Replaced motherboard; speakers; put in an additional fan; but this did not stop the static noise. This was done by inhouse tech. support from Sony. If i turn my speakers mute; the sound is still there! Can't hear it through headphones. I was told it is feedback noise! Now I'm suppose to send my $2,000.00 computer through the mail to get fixed? I'm terrified it'll come back in terrible condition during the travel time? Help?

  I'm trying to find out what are the standard service/tech-support response times that are expected of a software vendor. We're being asked by a customer to enter into an agreement regarding technical support for a software application that we're selling. Basically, I'm interested in the typical turn-around time (i.e. time to respond, time to resolution) based on the severity of the issue. And also, I'm interested in the financial structure of such agreements: i.e. charge/incident, bundle with unlimited incidents/customer etc. Any information or suggestions of where to find such information (even examples of other software vendors websites) would be greatly appreciated!

• Verizon Fivespot firewall

  I have a Verizon Fivespot Wi-Fi router and am having issues connecting to the computer that uses it to get on the internet. I am able to connect to the Fivespot admin pages remotely and I am able to connect to the internet from the computer behind the Fivespot. There are two sections pertinent to this issue, Port Filtering And, Port Forwarding I've tried each individually and both together but cannot access anything through the router except for the admin page. I am trying to connect through SSH to an Ubuntu 10.04 box over wifi. I have called Verizon Tech Support but they were unhelpful, the person essentially read what it says on each screen without any elaboration. Any help is greatly appreciated!

• enable hardware virtulization in BIOS

  I am running a FOXCONN AM2+ M61PMV with an AMD Athlon II X2 240 windows 7 ultimate 64 bit From startup I have hit the del key and the options for enabling the Hardware virtulization are not there. I have checked the Microsoft tool that says I can run virtual and i have checked SecurAble, that says yes. But I have an open case w/microsoft (they've been trying for a week [7 tech support people later]) and they're saying that i need to ensure that the hardware is enabled. Where do I go to see? is there another way besides from the start up? HELP!

• Is there any way to prevent a Mac from creating dot underscore files?

  At work we're letting one of our very tech savvy clients actually help out a little with a few development projects specific to him. However, he uses his own personal Macbook, and as he edits files on our (Windows) networks, his Macbook always creates a bunch of unnecessary meta files that we end up deleting later. For instance, it creates a file called .DS_Store in any directory he opens, as well as "dot underscore" files for each file he edits. So for instance, if he's editing a file called "Main.php", his Macbook will create another file called "._Main.php". I know there are ways to prevent creation of .DS_Store files, but none about how to prevent creation of these hidden files prefixed with dot underscore. Is there any way to turn that off on Macs? Any way to prevent it from creating those files in the first place?

I want to automate provisioning of web/app/database servers going forward for my projects I manage a mixture of both Windows and Linux servers (VPS, cloud and dedicated) I've looked at investigated Chef/Puppet/Ansible briefly; and I am wanting to find something that: Is easy to learn and understand. I don't want to invest weeks into understanding a complicated piece of tech. Ideally does not require a server ("master server") to hold the configurations Supports provisioning of Windows and Linux servers Comes with suitable documentation to get started Does anyone have any advice on what tool is best suited? • Which universal or driverless printing solution do you use/recommend?

  I'm in need of a driverless printing solution for Microsoft Terminal Services 2003/2008. This is mainly to support clients who are connected through broadband into our hosted servers. We were hoping that MSTS 2008 thinprint would be the answer but unfortunately it performs poorly in the print area. The files are too large. I found the following slightly outdated URL: http://www.msterminalservices.org/software/Printing/ This lists a number of products but I have no experience with any of them. I'd like a product that works/easy to install (as our clients are remote and not particularly tech savvy) and ideally I just pay for the server license and not every clients. • Any good resources on setting up an ubuntu virtual machine for web development?

  I'm currently on my placement year at uni with 4 months left. Before working at my current place, I have not used a nix environment for web development and have used WAMP. Over the past year I have found some very interesting new tech that requires a bit more than my shared hosting even to play with (eg node.js, RoR 3). At work we use a Virtual Machine for development, but that's all been set up and configured to match the live servers, and is managed with a Puppet server. Are there any really good resources for setting up and configuring an Ubuntu VM as a web server? Work currently uses Ubuntu so I would assume this is a good OS to use. I do of course know how to use google, but the noise ratio is just too big, so thought I'd ask here, as I know many of you will have a ton of bookmarks. Cheers.

• Thinkpad laptop heats up more than it used to - what are my options?

  Hi, I have a 3 yr old laptop (Thinkpad T61) which runs seemingly much hotter than it used to. It's not uncomfortable to touch, but I wonder whether I should do something about it. It does get uncomfortable if I have it on my lap (which I rarely need to do). I haven't made any mods to the laptop other than a bigger HD, and I recently cleaned up the inside (superficially - I didn't remove the fan). Are fans items that should be changed regularly?   I remember there was a tech-net or WindowsITpro article about how to harden windows 2003 service accounts a couple of years ago. For backup software purposes (such as BackupExec / AppAsure / Etc.. , please don't bash these) I have to create a domain admin account (usually called something such as "backup") and have the services run from that account. In this article I remember you can create the domain admin user "Backup" however have it not able to login interactively. • Cannot connect to internet with Clearwire modem

  I'm currently using a Motorola WiMAX modem (CPEi 25725) and cannot connect to the internet. I can connect to the modem at 192.168.15.1 and check its status. It says that it has good/excellent connectivity to the internet and shows all five signal bars. Additionally it has sent and received some WiMAX packets so I believe it is connected to a tower. I'm at a loss for what the problem is. Unplugging the modem, restarting it from software, and restarting my computer (Windows 7) have not helped. Windows still reports that it is not connected to the internet. Alternatively, could this be an ISP issue? I have heard that Clearwire is a not-so-reputable ISP that blocks VoIP, and I was using Skype recently. EDIT: I called Clear's tech support and apparently their network is having significant problems at the moment. Guess there's nothing an end-user can do about it.

  I love AutuCAD. It's powerful, easy to use, and fits engineering mind. It rocks when you want to draw 2D diagrams and shapes and one the cool features I like about it, is its snapping power. You draw a simple rectangle, then you can very easily create a circumscribe circle around it. However, new version of it are becoming really heavy (in size) and need high tech hardware, because of its powerful 3D capabilities, and rendering engines coming with it. I only want the 2D part of AutoCAD. Is there any software out there, which resembles AutoCAD (like having a console, where you can type L and get the line tool, or having snapping capability, etc.), but is small in size? In other words, what software can be named as AutoCAD 2D alternative?

• PC3200 RAM in Older Computer?

  Hello all, I am inheriting a Dell Dimension 8200, but it needs RAM to get up and running. I have PC3200 sticks lying around, but I am not sure how to go about figuring out if the RAM is compatible, as RAM has always confused me. Here is the Dell Dimension 8200 Tech Specs: http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/dim8200/specs.htm For RAM, it says: Memory type PC800 (non-ECC) I don't know if that is just the kind that comes with it, and I can put in PC3200 (I think, if it worked, this would run at the lower rating? Is that true?), or if that means only PC800 is compatible. Any help would be appreciated.

• How to use proxy on Virtual Box (Windows XP)

  I'm not exactly the most tech savy so please bear with me. I am trying to connect through a proxy with my Virtualbox accounts. Initially I wanted to just set the browsers in each virtualbox under a proxy but my boss said that it can probably be done right off the bat under the virtualbox accounts itself. Could anyone guide me on how to do this? All the instructions online state that their should be a proxy setting in preferences however all I see is a Network Adapter tab. Thanks!

• VMware Fusion on MacBook Pro running Vista, not working after installing a wireless card

  A tech friend installed VMware on my Mac so I could use my Windows programs as well. It worked great until I inserted my Sierra 881 USB wireless card while in VMware trying to get to the internet while on the road. It worked briefly, then the AT&T Communication manager won't respond when you click on the icon, I can't open Network and Sharing center, I can't sync my palm - shows it can't connect. Looks like it messed up several things, along with not being able to connect to the internet while in windows. This wireless cards works directly from the Mac - but I need internet while in Windows for some work I am doing. How do I uninstall this - when I try - it just gives me an endless reloading circle - not doing anything. I really need to sync my palm and get back to the way it was. I don't know much about VMware at all and I don't have access to my friend right now to get help.

From various forums I get the impression that there is specific information and developer resources you need in order to access that information for various boards. I have a MSI NF750-G55 board. MSI's website does not have any of the information I am looking for. I tried their tech support and the rep I spoke with stated they do not have any such information. There must be a way to obtain that info. Any thoughts?

• Our company has 100,000s+ photos, how to store and browse/find these efficiently?

  We currently store our photos in a structure like this: folder\1\10000 - 19999.JPG|ORF|TIF (10 000 files) folder\2\20000 - 29999.JPG|ORF|TIF (10 000 files) etc... They are stored on 4 different 2TB D-link NASes attached and shared on our office network (\\nas1, \\nas2, and so on...) Problems: 1) When a client (Windows only, Vista and 7) wishes to browse the let's say \\nas1\folder\1\ folder, performance is quite poor. A problem. List takes a long time to generate in explorer window. Even with icons turned off. 2) Initial access to the NAS itself is sometimes slow. Problem. SAN disks too expensive for us. Even with iSCSI interface/switch technology. I've read a lot of tech pages saying that storing 100 000+ files in one single folder shouldn't be a problem. But we don't dare go there now that we experience problems on a 10K level. All input greatly appreciated, /T

• Would SSD drives benefit from a non-default allocation unit size?

  The default allocation unit size recommended when formatting a drive in our current set-up is 4096 bytes. I understand the basics of the pros and cons of larger and smaller sizes (performance boost vs. space preservation) but it seems the benefits of a solid state drive (seek times massively lower than hard disks) may create a situation where a much smaller allocation size is not detrimental. Were this the case it would at least partially help to overcome the disadvantage of SSD (massively higher prices per GB). Is there a way to determine the 'cost' of smaller allocation sizes specifically related to seek times? Or are there any studies or articles recommending a change from the default based on this newer tech? (Assume the most average scattering of sizes program files, OS files, data, mp3s, text files, etc.)

  Installing linux/windows through pxe works smoothly for me. But downloading images(especially windows) is a headache. Let alone the time, bandwith usage is horrible. And p2p tech comes to my mind.   My colleagues abuse our mail servers public folders to store (old) emails so that everyone can read them using IMAP. I'm looking into good alternatives after reading this Tech Republic article: "10 reasons why you should begin phasing out Exchange public folders" The most important thing they need is access to emails from multiple computers without overloading our network. So do you have any suggestions for alternatives? If there's a nice combination with some CRM system it would be interesting too. Note: this doesn't have to be freeware, usability and efficiency are more important. The solution has to be Windows 32 bit only
