• Why is x86 ugly? aka Why is x86 considered inferior when compared to others?

  Hello, recently I've been reading some SO archives and encountered statements against x86 architecture. http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2667256/why-do-we-need-different-cpu-architecture-for-server-mini-mainframe-mixed-cor says "PC architecture is a mess, any OS developer would tell you that." http://stackoverflow.com/questions/82432/is-learning-assembly-language-worth-the-effort says "Realize that the x86 architecture is horrible at best" http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=976577 says "Most colleges teach assembly on something like MIPS because it's much simpler to understand, x86 assembly is really ugly" and many more comments like Compared to most architectures, X86 sucks pretty badly. It's definitely the conventional wisdom that X86 is inferior to MIPS, SPARC, and PowerPC x86 is ugly I tried searching but didn't find any reasons. I don't find x86 bad probably because this is the only architecture I'm familiar with. Can someone kindly give me reasons for considering x86 ugly/bad/inferior compared to others.

• What is it that automatically checks config changes (such as those in /etc) into git?

  I remember reading on the ubuntu forums some time ago about a program to automatically check configuration changes into version control for you. It was (of course) not Ubuntu-specific. I'm pretty sure it used git, though it may have been svn, or perhaps even able to work with multiple different VCSs. My Googling has turned up nothing, and I'd rather not roll my own script if someone has already done this well. Of course I could just manually check things in, but there are reasons I'd like it done automatically. (I'm actually planning to use this for my LastSession.plist file for Safari, so when the #@$%^*&! thing crashes, and I don't restore everything, and then Leopard crashes, the fact that it has such lousy session management won't mean I lose the dozens of windows with dozens of tabs I had open.)

• C++/CLI: Compiling static library with /CLR support

  We have old (working) code that consists of a static library compiled with /CLR, and a C++/CLI DLL that links to the static lib. We are about to add new features to this static lib. Now, I've have heard from numerous sources that CLR static libraries are not supported by Microsoft, and therefore I'm pushing to clean this up and switch to DLL before we start adding new features to this project. However, I haven't been able to find any official information from Microsoft regarding this (say, from MSDN - other than their forums). I will appreciate any resources about this whole "static lib with CLR" issue.

  Hi, I am trying to read an XSLT file from disk in my ASP.Net MVC controller. What I am doing is the following: string filepath = HttpContext.Request.PhysicalApplicationPath; filepath += "/Content/Xsl/pubmed.xslt"; string xsl = System.IO.File.ReadAllText(filepath); However, half way down this thread on forums.asp.net there is the following quote HttpContext.Current is evil and if you use it anywhere in your mvc app you are doing something wrong because you do not need it. Whilst I am not using "Current", I am wondering what is the best way to determine the absolute physical path of a file in MVC? For some reason (I don't know why!) HttpContext doesn't feel right for me. Is there a better (or recommended/best practice) way of reading files from disk in ASP.Net MVC? Thanks for your help, Robin

• Entity framework : [Set all the entities with internal access specifier]

  Hi, By virtue of my application, I need to seperate my business entities from the entities created by EF4. I need to restrict the entities to only access the repository from where they are translated (using translator) to business entities shared at business and service layer. I thought of restricting them by specifying them as internal. Now there are more than 40 entities in my application so manually setting them as internal is a difficult job. In one of the forums the answers suggested using the T4 templates. But even those templates read from the entity framework access specifier. When I try to manually try to specify all the properties and class access specifiers as internal it gives me an error saying that the entity set should also be set to internal, but there is no option for the same. I am using VS 2010 and Entity Framework 4. Any suggestions???

• Touching an object in a tweened animation?

  I'm having trouble porting a simple game I developed for the iPhone over to Android. The game has an animated ball which moves from Point A to Point B. The user must touch the ball before it reaches point B or lose the game. This was easy to implement on the iPhone using Core Animation since I could locate the current position of the ball by accessing its animation layer. In Android, I attempted to recreate the game using tweened animation and represented the ball as a Drawable. My issue is that I can't determine if the user is touching the spot because the Drawable apparently bounds do not update as the ball visually moves - making the program think the ball is always in its original position. While searching these forums I saw an Android team dev. confirm that you can't get the current location in a tweened animation but offered no solution for a workaround. Can I accomplish this on the Android using my current approach? If not, what approach should I use? Best regards, Michael

  Recently i have some problems accessing websites. When i try to access it says This webpage is not available. I tried accessing the site through FireFox, Internet Explorer and Chrome. I also tried with using a web proxy but still the same problem. This problem is only in my Desktop PC, all the websites works fine in my laptop Currently i cant access, yahoo.com download.com bing.com proxy.org daniweb.com aol.com and many forums I check with the host file but nothing is blocked in that. Can some one please suggest what is wrong?? Thanks

Update: I prefer a Java-based solution because I'm a Java developer and I figure that it would be easier for me to customize it or modify its code when necessary. I know that PHP forums such as phpBB and vBulletin are very popular but I wouldn't want to touch PHP code.

• CPU temperature monitoring C#

  For a programming project I would like to access the temperature readings from my CPU and GPUs. I will be using C#. From various forums I get the impression that there is specific information and developer resources you need in order to access that information for various boards. I have a MSI NF750-G55 board. MSI's website does not have any of the information I am looking for. I tried their tech support and the rep I spoke with stated they do not have any such information. There must be a way to obtain that info. Any thoughts?

• Problem sending php variables to flash game, on facebook

  When I run the app for the first time in a session it works great i get all data form Database(if i logout, and enter with a diffrent account)the swf does not receive the variables. If i run manually the script typing the url address in the browser (typing: http://myserver.com/app/variables.php), and refresh the facebook app, it receives the data perfectly.How can i fix this?I used the URLVariables, URLRequest and flashvars but still with no succes.I asked for help on many forums but without succes, apparently there are many in my situation.Could this porblem be due the fact tha facebook does not allow flash to talk outside? Any help would be highly apreciated!Thanks!!

• HTML Links on IzPack HTMLInfoPanel not working correctly

  In my installer (created using IzPack) i am using HTMLInfoPanel, in the HTML data for this info panel I have a website link and an email address. The problem is 1) When I click on the website link, the page is opened in the Installer panel itself, instead of open the page in the default browse window. 2) When I click on the email link, the page in the panel just refreshes and does nothing instead of opening the mail client for the user. Following is HTML for the link: <a href="http://www.XYZ.com/" target="_blank">XYZ, Ltd.</a> HTML for the eMail link: <A HREF="mailto:[email protected]" target="_blank">[email protected]</A> I couldn't find any help fixing this in the IzPack documentation other forums. • Changing the URL of an ExpressionEngine forum

  I've set up a forum on ExpressionEngine and customised the URL as I want a specific path to the forum. To do this I went to Modules Discussion Forum Forum Board Preferences and in the Forum URL put in my desired URL. Let's call it http://www.mywebsite.com/students/forum/ My homepage displays the latest 5 posts from the forum. It all works except for the URLs which don't go to this URL and instead point to http://www.mywebsite.com/forums/viewthread/xxx Is there an extra step I am missing here? Why doesn't the forum URL just update automatically when I save it?

• Image surrounded by text in WPF

  Greetings, I have some control which display bunch of textblocks and image. I would like the image to be surrounded by text. I have already implemented some functionality by using FlowDocument and custom bindable run control. (These controls are included inside user control). When I generate lots of these controls in treeview, application goes into infinite loop. I asked on forums before about this problem and the answer was that it can be WPF issue. Howver when I removed bindable run from my user control, problem dissappeared. Now I am trying to implement other solution where image will be surrounded by text. Can someone please help me? EDIT: Generally i would like to achieve something like this

• Github - what is it really?!

  ok.. this might seem like a strange question but my idea of Github and that of my boss is very different. From what I can tell its a version control tool. My boss seems to think that it will connect to the server where we're hosting our webapp and when changes are committed on github that these get applied to the server to... If this is the case how do I connect github to my server? Many thanks for helping me with what might seem like a stupid question but I've searched forums, articles and I'm more confused than ever!   Hi, I'm trying to complete the Android MapView tutorial @ www.developer.android.com/resources/tutorials/views/hello-mapview.html I think I've done the entire thing correctly but I'm getting an error message in Eclipse. I'm sure why. The problematic line of code is private ArrayList<OverlayItem> mOverlays = new ArrayList<OverlayItem>(); I'm relatively new to Java but I've gone through the forums of different things and I really have no idea on this one. • focus on page scroll navigation when using iPad

  I've used Page Scroller Lite http://pagescroller.com to set up a single-page site at http://www.thestitchshop.co.uk There seems to be an issue that scolling works only once when clicking on a menu item. It will only work again after one touched scrolls the page 'manually' by sliding the finger across the page. Apparently, the issue is that the content gets the focus after the scroll and tapping on navigation then actually taps behind it. I've tried contacting the author of pagecroller, but no luck. So, how do I fix it? I don't have any JS knowledge, so I need a little more help along the way. Many thanks. • Unable to call WMP's controls.play() function in VisualBasic

• CodedUI null reference exception even when object exists

  Hi, I have created a coded ui test that checks something in my software. It worked fine, but now I keep getting null reference exception when I try to interact with the UITestControl. The starnge thing is, that the UITestControl's 'Exist' property returns true, which means that the control had been found. I've searched and found this topic: http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en/vsautotest/thread/c2e6e5c3-2503-4506-9963-733fd84fbd25, But I have checked in my project, and the 'Copy Local' propert of these assemblies is set to false. I think that this execption first occurred after I have added an app.config file to my project. Maybe this might be the problem? If so, how can I fix this without deleting my app.config file?   I basically want to use the XML parser from Qt in my existing project. I have only used Qt once before, and that was with Qt Designer, and I am not having much luck finding anything on Google about how to just use the XML library. I have downloaded a web page that has one large list, and I want to parse it and add each list item to a c++ list. • Kohana3 - Auth Module deleting User while he is logged in bug

  Hello Stackoverflow Users, Today I've tested the Kohana3, which has been changed a lot. I'm working so much with the Auth Module, and need this in my new Project also. Now I found a Bug, I think it is a bug, what can I do? Problem: After I'm deleting a user from the Database, who is at this Moment logged_in() in my Website, and he is refreshing the page, he will be logged_in() as the first user out of the PRAEFIX_users Table. Even if he is deleted. And 99% this is an Administrator. My function which is checking and redirecting if he is not logged_in(): if(!Auth::instance()->logged_in()) { $this->request->redirect( 'login' ); } How can i change my Check Login so, that if he is deleted, he will be redirected to login (/login/) ? Here the same Thread at Kohana Forums, but I hope and think, stackoverflow is a litte bit faster :)

• How to code a batch file to copy and rename the most recently dated file?

  I'm trying to code a batch file to copy only the most recently dated file in a given folder to another directory on the local machine, and simultaneously rename it as it does. I've found a very similar question here http://stackoverflow.com/questions/97371/batch-script-to-copy-newest-file and have managed to cobble together the below code from other forums too, but have hit a brick wall as it only results in the batch file itself being copied to the destination folder. It doesn't matter to me where the batch file itself sits in order for this to run. The source folder is C:! BATCH and the destination folder is C:\DROP The code is below, apologies if this is a glaringly obvious answer but it's literally the first foray into coding batch files for me...   I've worked with folks who are chatting online with their peers, constantly batting around ideas. I've also worked with folks who adamantly refuse and think it's a waste of time. Are online live chatting forums of particular use to you? Why or why not? Internal to your company, or external and world-wide? Does your employer encourage or discourage their use? Update: I see some people are voting this question down, yet so far all the answers have been positive, if with some reservations. If someone has a strong negative opinion (I hate online chatting and think it should be banned etc.) I'd really like to hear why.
