• Can remote LogMeIn Hamachi users access our local LAN?

  Unknown to me, one of the kids has installed LogMeIn Hamachi on his PC so that he can access and play on his pal's Minecraft server, and vice versa. One of the things I did was disable the Client for Microsoft Networks and File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks on the Hamachi NIC in Windows 7's Network Connections. However, my lack of fu when it comes to these types of services is leaving me feeling a little uncomfortable about him using this. Is there anything I should be worried about here? For example, can his friends access our local LAN (which has a number of NAS boxes with unsecured shares) and get up to no good?

• Unable to get to main screen and safe mode doesn't help.

  It is my friends computer so I am not very familiar with it, I am unable to get it to start. I can get to the logon screen but after entering the password there is an error (something to do with Roxio) and only the background loads. No Start menu, Taskbar or icons. If I boot it in safe mode it gets stuck on a black screen and don't even get the command prompt. I am confident that If I could get to the menu to edit startup programs then I could fix the problem... any Ideas?

It was perfectly running fine in old server but in this new server it's continuously giving this error. I am running windows 2003 server with IIS 6. Why I am geting this error ? please help. • IRC Services with failover support?

  I run a single server (call it 'server A') IRC 'network', and thank to the generosity of some friends, I have been given a second server ('server B') that I can run an IRCd on in order to provide redundancy in case server A crashes. This is fine, I can set up a round-robin DNS with the servers linked. The problem I have is what to do about services? Does anyone know of a way to get the services to 'fail over' in case of a server failure? Eg, Server A starts off running the services, but suddenly crashes. Server B detects this and starts its own copy of the services (ideally with the same configuration and data as the services on Server B) One solution that comes it mind is to write a bot that each server runs, that sit in a channel periodically checking if the bot from the other server is in the channel. If it is, then all is well. If not, then failover. I would prefer not to have to code this myself though We are currently using Unreal IRCd and Anope services on Linux

• My laptop can connect to every wireless network except fios

  I have always been able to connect to every wireless router secured or unsecured wep or wpa. I had Fios installed and could not connect. Verizon suggested it was my computer and gave me an outside wirless drive to use, it worked. I got rid of fios and went back to comcast and threw out the drive, but now 2 years later, I am sitting at my friends house haveing the same problem. My tech savy friend told me it is a firewall setting or something in my antivirus software, but I disabled them both and still nothing works........Funny it is only FIOS

• How to share my localhost over the internet?

  I really want to share my localhost over the internet to show my friends the progress of the website we're working on, so that I don't need to upload it to the public server each time I make a change. showoff.io is not free and localtunnel gives me "failed to authenticate" when trying to upload my public key (a lot of people seem to have this problem and there doesn't seem to be a solution for this). Does anyone know any other free service I can use or any other solution at all? I'm using a Mac. Thanks. UPDATE: with localhost I mean a web server running on my computer, I have a dynamic IP address and no I'm not behind a router (just using a wireless modem).

• Problems with webcame

  My friends is using windows 8.1 and he has a webcam. He says it is working very well even without installing drivers. Webcam is A4tech - PK-331F. I asked for this webcam for use. I plugged that that webcam and windows detected it and installed drivers automatically. Then I opened Skype for checking webcam. I got massage on top of Skype that "your webcam has microphone" when I clicked over it, it directed me to sound settings where I microphone of webcam was working. I went to videos settings but webcam wasn't listed their. As you can see in image. Webcam is listed in device manager but isn't listed in Skype. I am also using windows 7 professional. Any idea why it is happening?

• Will Windows Barf on Constant Video Driver Overwrite?

  So, I've got a Win7 64-bit gaming PC with GTX 260's. Recently, StarCraft 2 had an issue with flickering, which NVidia fixed with a new set of drivers. However, these new drivers induce unplayable graphical errors with Neverwinter Nights 2, something me and my friends still play from time to time. I am seeking advice on the "best" way to rectify this situation, to be able to switch between two driver releases, without compromising the stability of my system (if Windows stability isn't an oxymoron). I'm wondering if Windows 7 is structured in such a way that I can constantly reinstall these two sets of drivers back and forth overtop each other, possibly six or eight times a day, without very quickly driving myself to reformat to maintain that "just like new" performance. I'm loathe to have to reformat the drive and maintain two copies of the operating system, but I'll do it if I have to.

• Install wireless router with cable modem - need authentication server?

  I've bought a wireless router which I'm installing with a Telstra BigPond cable modem for a friend. As part of the setup I've got to a screen requesting username / password / authentication server for the cable modem They have contacted Telstra who supply the username / password and say that is all they need. They dont know anything about an authentication server. I guess if I dont get anything more here I'll try what it says on whirlpool and see what happens.

• Problem connecting to Ubuntu Server in same local network.

  I have my LAN set up as below: 192.168.2.1: ADSL Router (DHCP Range: 192.168.2.2-192.168.2.250) 192.168.2.254: Wireless Access Point 192.168.2.253: Ubuntu Server (Static IP) 192.168.2.2: My Laptop (Connects to Internet via the Wireless AP) NAT in router is active and set up to transfer requests made over port 80 to 192.168.2.253. Router's firewall is inactive. No IPs in DMZ. My friends get Apache's It Works page when they try to enter http://my_external_ip. But I get Router's configuration page instead of that. What should I check or do? Thanks.

• Start Menu freezes when highlighting 'All Programs'

  Hey all, A friends machine is lagging for about 30 seconds when they highlight 'All Programs'. A gray box popus up where the program menu would be, but it doesnt populate for nearly 30 seconds. This seems to happen if he hasn't open the start menu for a bit.. but if he get's it working once, doing it immediatly afterwards will usually not have the same lag. Assuming computer hardware isn't an issue, any ideas what the problem may be? Sidenote: He mentioned making desktop shortcuts is taking long as well, does that give any clues?

• How to set umask for a folder and it's subfolder?

  I'm working on the same directory with some friends and they access it via SSH. I added us in the same group and defined a sticky bit to keep the user:group values the same. But when a user create a file/folder, the Write attribute is not defined for the group, disabling other to write it/on it. How can I define the Umask to add the Write value for groups in the specific directory and it's subfolders ? I tried to find some help before, but I only saw helps for Fedora/CentOs, and I'm using Debian Squeeze. Thanks for your help

• How to specify or add directory to Python.h search path during setup.py build/install

  I'm running Linux, and have downloaded a python module I must install without access to any but my particular /home/user directory (I have no root privileges nor the option to pursue them). This of course requires the Python source. This I've downloaded and have laying around in said user directory. While asking the admin to copy the proper files into /usr/include/python2.7 is the easiest way to go about this, I am hoping for a more general and portable solution to this kind of problem. Changing only data in the module source (MANIFEST.in, README.txt, setup.py, etc.), how might I add an arbitrary directory to the search path for Python.h and friends? (Without a solution, "python setup.py build" will continue returning with the "Python.h: No such file or directory" error) Thank you very much.   On a friends laptop following some viruses infestations there is a problem in starting the Windows firewall. The error is: Could not start the Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing(ICS) service on Local Computer. Error 2: The system cannot find the file specified When attempting to turn on automatic updates in the security centre, the message is: We're sorry. The Security Center could not change your Automatic Updates settings. To try changing these settings yourself, go to System in Control Panel. On the Automtic Updates tab, select Automatic (recommended), and then click OK. All the options under "Automatic Updates" are greyed out. • How to make XP install ubuntu from USB?

  I want to install ubuntu on my PC which is running windows XP right now. I have made my pen drive bootable and have loaded Ubuntu on it. When I insert the pen drive at the time of booting of my PC, nothing happens and windows XP starts normally instead of asking me if I want to boot from my pen drive. Also when, I entered my BIOS setting to change the boot order there was no option of pen drive as a boot device. Please suggest me a way to install the OS using my already made bootable pen drive. • How can I search for Gmail conversations that have more than one e-mail? [closed]

  I previously used a service that sent me Slashdot articles as individual e-mails. All I had to do was give them the RSS url, and they handled the rest. On the Gmail side, I simply made a filter, labeling these e-mails as "News". Once I stopped using the service, I realized that I had more than 20,000 such e-mails stockpiled. While I could delete all "News" e-mails, there are some that I've forwarded to friends, sometimes receiving multiple replies. These conversations are valuable - I would like to keep them. As far as I can tell, there's no way to search for conversations that have more than one e-mail in the thread. Up until now, I've been deleting them page by page, carefully de-selecting the conversations that have more than one e-mail; however, it will take far too much time to complete. Is there an easier way that I'm missing? Thanks.

• Cannot copy anything onto WD Elements 1TB External USB HDD

  I have a Western Digital 1023 Elements 1TB External USB HDD. Recently, it has started an unusual problem. I cannot copy any file of any size on to that 1TB hard-drive, eventhough it has more than 400 GB free (out of 931GB actual size). I tried copying movies from one friends laptop, which did not work. I also tried another desktop to copy some study material e-books (in PDF), which also did not work. I get same CRC error when I try to copy anything from a computer's hard-drive onto this WD 1TB hard-drive. Vice-versa it's working. I mean, I can copy any file from the USB HDD onto local machine's HDD on any computer. It's like one-way traffic. This HDD is only 1 year old. What are my options ? Any suggestions ? • Blocking facebook's Like button in firefox

  Many sites today use widgets from facebook such as the Like button, list of friends who are fans of that site and so on. While it may be a nice feature, I perceive it to be a serious privacy intrusion, because facebook most likely stores information about which sites you visit. I also heard that when you are not logged into facebook, it still tracks the sites you visit (probably with a cookie) and once you log in attaches the data to your real account. For now, I want to keep using facebook, but I would like to block just these widgets so it can't track me. Is there any Firefox extension which could do that?

• Windows 7 starter will not shutdown or logoff

  Im having some problems with a friends netbook (a dell mini 10). It will not shutdown or logoff via the usual route. Whenever the shutdown/logoff button is clicked, it will briefly freeze (maybe for only a second) and then do nothing. Ive tried shutting down manually via the command line using shutdown /p but all to no avail, it just defaults back to flashing cursor in the command prompt. There doesnt seem to be any mention of a similar problem on google so i was wondering if anyone else had any ideas. Thanks oh and its runnning windows 7 starter.

• Why do people like widescreen when it is, de facto, less space?

  I find that many of my friends/non-programmers or designers like widescreens. It makes very little sense to me as you in fact have less space than a 4:3 (do the math). The closer to a perfect square the more space you actually have on your screen. I got a 21" 16:9 and two 19" 4:3 The 21" is nearly the same height, but I think its a tenth of an inch shorter if I'm correct. I forget the calculation but it is nearly the same actual space. I can understand if you're using your computer for constant movie-watching but I think that's more of people's "ideal" than a reality. Thoughts?

• How to configure postfix to dynamically choose different relayhosts?

  I use my laptop at work on wireless and wired networks, at home on a wireless network, and at various other places (such as conferences, friends houses, etc). When at work I'd like postfix to use the corportate mail server to route emails. When at home I'd like it to use my personal mail server to route emails. When elsewhere I'd like to have the laptop attempt to deliver email in the normal smtp fashion. Is this possible using just postfix? Do I need something else (such as Lamson http://lamsonproject.org/, or scripts that dynamically patch my postfix configuration) when I want to do routing that depends on my current location?
