• Apache crashes every 5min

  I'm relatively new to server issues, having a site of mine that I started early in the year grow beyond my capabilities of managing it. I need help. I recently moved out of my shared hosting environment onto a dedicated virtual server from Mediatemple. Each week, I run a script that fetches data from my DB, fetches data from last.fm's API and then tweets information to Twitter. My server uses Virtuozzo and when the script runs, Apache crashes every 5min. I checked and saw that the 'kmemsize' parameter reaches its cap (its 13mb). I realise my problem. The MySQL process stays open for long while Apache needs to handle lots of incoming links (about 200 000 pageviews for that day according to my previous host's AWSTATS). Yes, I'm quite unexperienced in this, and I'm clearly killing the server with too many incoming links while it has to manage the updating of the DB. So that is the precedent: I want a few answers. 1) Why did my shared hosting environment not crash apache every 5min? It ran fine, the site only slowed a lot. Clearly, it must be the virtual container and the kmemsize limit? 2) Where do I go from here? Would a physical server (not a virtual container) encounter the same problems? I sent a support request to Mediatemple as well. I need all the help I can get.

• Intel NIC X540-T1 non-functional in Ubuntu Server 12.04

  I have installed three Intel X540-T1's in servers running Ubuntu Server 12.04, but all are non-functional, no link lights, no packets sent or received, and no connection on ip4 or ip6 whether set up as dhcp or static. Also, dmesg doesn't detect cable connection or disconnection. I updated the default ixgbe driver to Intel's latest version (3.11.33) with no change. The ethernet controller is being reported as X540-AT2 (which might be a problem that I can't figure out how to fix), but the subsystem is X540-T1 so I believe that might be intended. • What would cause my Windows machine to seize?

  I run Windows XP SP2 on a Desktop I built (I know that doesn't provide much, but I can't say "on a Dell X103938R" or something). It has 'seized' about 7 times in its year and a half life. Everything freezes. I can't move the mouse cursor and the keyboard seems unresponsive. I can turn the monitor on and off and it will hold the last image. The light for the mouse is responsive if I move it. The keyboard lights change when pressed (cap locks, etc). I've waited upto ten minutes for a change, nothing. I haven't connected any activity to the seizing. It's happened when all I was "running" were fullscreen programs (games), just checking email, or once when I was sitting at my desktop (I was reading a book and when I tried to use the mouse, nothing). I've never been able to figure it out. I have to hard reset, and then its fine. It doesn't file system check or anything (not sure if Windows does that). No error when I load up the computer, nothing. If I had uTorrent open, it will have to recheck the torrent files to make sure they weren't corrupted though. (It's not always open when it seizes either). I'm using an AMD Athlon 5400+ with a NVidia GeForce 8600 GT, if that helps. I'm using two hard drives, 500Gb Wester Digital with a 1Tb Hitachi.

  Is it always guaranteed that a multi-threaded application would run faster than a single threaded application? I have two threads that populates data from a data source but different entities (eg: database, from two different tables), seems like single threaded version of the application is running faster than the version with two threads. Why would the reason be? when i look at the performance monitor, both cpu s are very spikey ? is this due to context switching? what are the best practices to jack the CPU and fully utilize it? I hope this is not ambiguous.

I was able to connect to my database and retrive all records and made 5 pages with links to view each pages using php script. webpage will look like this: name number john 1232343456 tony 9878768544 jack 3454562345 joe 1232343456 jane 2343454567 andy 2344560987 marcy 9873459876 sean 8374623534 mark 9898787675 nancy 8374650493 1 2 3 4 5 that's the first page of 58 records and those 5 numbers at bottom are links to each page that will display next 10 records. I got all that. but what I want to do is display the links in this way: 1-10 11-20 21-30 31-40 41-50 51-58 note: since i have 58 records, last link will display upto 58, instead of 60. Since I used the loop to create this link, depending on how many records i have, the link will change according to the number of records in my table. How can i do this? Thanks.

  I've got an old box that I don't want to scrap yet because it's got a nice working 5-disk RAID assembly. I want to create 2 arrays: RAID 1 with 2 disks and RAID 5 with the other 3 disks. The RAID card is Intel SRCU31L. I can create the RAID 1 volume in the console that you access with Ctrl+C at startup. But it only allows for creation of one volume so I can't do anything with the 3 remaining disks. I installed Debian Lenny on the RAID 1 volume and it worked out nicely. What utilites could I now use to create/manage the RAID volumes in Debian Linux? I installed the raidutils package but get an error when trying to fetch a list: #raidutil -L controller or #raidutil -L physical # raidutil -L controller osdOpenEngine : 11/08/110-18:16:08 Fatal error, no active controller device files found. Engine connect failed: Open What could I try to get this thing working? Can you suggest any other tools? I restored the window ghost but failed to boot. I tried to install new window but installation failed after coping the window files. tried to install old vista lonhorn. It inspected found errors, fixed them but ultimatly failed to be installed. Once again restored the ghost through acronis but failed to boot. At the end attached as slave with another pc but it was not visible. Even acronis could not see it or its partitions. Only bios can see it. It seems that no file system is available on the drive. My data on drive is very important. Please help me how to revover my data. Drive brand is Samsung, cap is 160 GB and file system was NTFS.

• Highlight Read-Along Text (in a storybook type app for iPhone)

  I love this feature (well, my son loves it), and I would like to implement it in a kid's book app I am doing for iPhone, but I'm clueless where to begin. I'm using Cocos2d for all the animated sprite/transition stuff, but I'm not sure how to approach highlighting text as it is narrated. Example: "Jack and Jill, drank their fill, and were too drunk to go for water." As the text is narrated (.mp3 plays on each page), the text would be highlighted. I considered investigating Core animation, but I"m more familiar with Cocs2d at this point (tenuously at best). If someone has a clue, I'd really appreciate it. Brendang

• Shrinking a large transaction log on a full drive

  Someone fired off an update statement as part of some maintenance which did a cross join update on two tables with 200,000 records in each. That's 40 trillion statements, which would explain part of how the log grew to 200GB. I also did not have the log file capped, which is another problem I will be taking care of server wide - where we have almost 200 databases residing. The 'solution' I used was to backup the database, backup the log with truncate_only, and then backup the database again. I then shrunk the log file and set a cap on the log. Seeing as there were other databases using the log drive, I was in a bit of a rush to clean it out. I might have been able to back the log file up to our backup drive, hoping that no other databases needed to grow their log file. Paul Randal from http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/magazine/2009.02.logging.aspx Under no circumstances should you delete the transaction log, try to rebuild it using undocumented commands, or simply truncate it using the NO_LOG or TRUNCATE_ONLY options of BACKUP LOG (which have been removed in SQL Server 2008). These options will either cause transactional inconsistency (and more than likely corruption) or remove the possibility of being able to properly recover the database. Were there any other options I'm not aware of?

  Hi, i am implementing a little Black Jack game in C# and i have the following problem calculating the player's hand value. the problem is Ace may have value of 1 or 11 so if the players has three cards and one Ace if the sum of the cards is <= 10 Ace will have value of 11(Sorry for who doesn't know the scope of the game is to reach 21 with the sum of the cards) Other way value of 1 Up to here is easy Now lets assume i do not know how many Aces the player has got and the game is implemented giving the possibility to the dealer to use more than one deck of cards. the user may have in one hand even 5,6,7,8 ... aces. What is the best way(possibly using Linq) to evaluate all the aces the player has got to get the closest combination to 21 (in addition tot he other cards)?   I'm trying to set the $PATH to pick up the latest version of pg_dump as I'm currently getting a mismatch error while doing a migrate in my Rails app (I recently changed the schema type to SQL). • Value of Itanium or Sparc over x86_64 for Oracle Deployment

  We are looking at a new environment to run our Oracle Database running on SUSE (potentially migrating to RedHat). Our database is approximately 100GB and performs adequately on our current hardware (x86_64) with approximately 6GB of ram allocated to it. We are growing quickly however and will require more performance shortly. Given the cost of Oracle licenses we would like to maximize the value from each license by choosing the most appropriate CPU to run the software on. The questions are: Are there substantial benefits to looking at Itanium or Sparc hardware, are there any drawbacks? Is there a point where one starts to scale out better? What are the long term support options for Itanium? Given the dominance of x86 would it be safer long term to stick with x86? On average what would be the performance benefit of implementing an Oracle database on Itanium or Sparc over x86_64? Is this an issue at all or will other factors (IO/RAM) cap out first? If anyone can point me towards some solid documentation on comparisons between the platforms that provides good case analysis of when to choose which I'm more than happy to accept that as an answer. Edit:- Added Sparc as an Option as it was previously not considered however with the recent Oracle Sun aquisition seems very relevant.

• Switched from DVI to HDMI, possible audio artifacts?

  I'm using an ASUS VH236H monitor and an EVGA GeForce 570 GTX both of which are brand new. My monitor has an audio out port for speakers/headphones so I plugged in my headphones and made a random selection from my library when I noticed two things: There are static-like artifacts during "louder" parts of songs. There's what seems to be a volume cap in place. When I crank the volume past 100% in VLC the decibel level does not truly increase but the amount of static does. The cable is not new; I yanked it off of my PS3 when my DVI cable broke. It has been used a good amount on my HDTV and PS3 so I doubt it's a matter of burn-in. I like the way the setup works with an HDMI cable as opposed to DVI because my headphones barely reach my rig whereas I have plenty of slack when they're plugged into my monitor. Thanks in advance for any support. Note: I'm using a high quality HDMI cable from monoprice, AKG K702 headphones, and VLC media player.

• Doctrine inserts when it should update

  I am trying to use do the most simple update query but Doctrine issues an INSERT statement instead of an UPDATE. $q = Doctrine_Query::create() ->from('Image i') ->where('id = ?'); $image = $q->fetchOne($articleId, Doctrine_Core::HYDRATE_RECORD); $image->copyright = "some text"; $image->save(); I have also tried using the example from the manual, but still a new record gets inserted: $userTable = Doctrine_Core::getTable('User'); $user = $userTable->find(2); if ($user !== false) { $user->username = 'Jack Daniels'; $user->save(); } edit: This example from the manual works: $user = new User(); $user->assignIdentifier(1); $user->username = 'jwage'; $user->save(); The funny thing is that I use this on another model and there it works OK. Maybe I have to fetch the whole array graph for this to work (I have another model in a one to many relationship)?

  We are storing people's class attendance information to Drupal. We would like to show this in a grid/chart, where the first column of each row shows person's name, and rest of the columns (ca. 20) either a checkbox or "X" if the user attended a class, or otherwise an non-checked box or empty column: (dates here) Jack X XXX X X Jill XX XXX XX It should also be possible to edit the attendance information on the grid. Each attendance information is a node of its own. This functionality can probably mostly be achieved using views and editablefields, but there is one problem: if a person has not attended a specific class he/she will not have at all an attendace node for that day. What would be the easiest way to create an attendace node in those cases, so that it would be possible for the end user to edit the grid by just clicking on the checkbox or typing an 'X'?
