• Cannot find System.Web.Script.Service namespace error after upgrading to Visual studio 2010

  I've just upgraded a VS 2008 project to VS 2010, converting the project but keeping the target as .NET 3.5 (SP1 is installed). My project worked without issue under VS 2008 on another machine. I've added references to System.Web.Extensions.dll but I'm still getting the following errors from code in the App_Code folder: 1) Cannot find System.Web.Script.Service namespace 2) Type 'System.Web.Script.Services.ScriptService' is not defined. 3) Type 'System.Runtime.Serialization.Json.DataContractJsonSerializer' is not defined. Anyone have any ideas what the problem might be as I'm pretty stumped? :(

• Choosing Between Prism and Caliburn

  I have been using Prism 2.0 for a personal project for a few months now. I have recently heard of Caliburn and am wondering if there are compelling reasons for me to consider that instead. I like Prism's dynamic module loading capability. I intend to build modules for my application and would like to be able to deploy them in a modular manner. Is that also possible with Caliburn? What are the advantages of Caliburn over Prism? (I read that Prism will also have a new version by September 2010 that will leverage .Net 4.0. and am keeping my application flexible to be updated by then as well.)

• TFS webtest for SSRS reports issue

  I am creating webtests in TFS and trying to test reports execution in SSRS. When I record the initial process, it includes Reserved.ReportViewerWebControl.axd files. These files are what is causing the problem. When I remove the files, the report does not display, however if I keep the AXD files in it works fine. The problem with keeping the AXD files is the reportsession querystring variable that are included. If I run the report after a bit the reportsession has obviously changed. Any help is appreciated.

• UIScrollView subviews not showing at first

  I created a custom UIScrollView subclass that works a like a UITableView, keeping a collection of subviews and re-using them whenever the user scrolls. It's implemented like this: -(void)layoutSubviews { for(UIView *subview in [self subviews]) [subview removeFromSuperview]; // then re-add subviews after changing the frame and some attributes } This works fine with simple UIViews, but when I try to do it with a UIView that has a UILabel subview, the "base" view appears fine, but the UILabel doesn't show up at all. I can get the UILabel to show up by scrolling the entire UIView off screen and then bringing it back on. What could be causing this? So far, I've tried calling [myUIView setNeedsLayout], [myUIView setNeedsDisplay], and [myUIView layoutIfNeeded] from various places. None of them worked, and the last one crashed my app. I've also done the same thing to myUIScrollViewSubclass, with similar results.

• List<T>.RemoveAll Doesn't Exist in Silverlight?

  I'm working on a Silverlight 2/3 application. I would like to use List.RemoveAll (or maybe it's IList.RemoveAll?) and specify a predicate so that I can remove a bunch of elements from a list in one sweep. It seems like this function doesn't exist in Silverlight, though. Am I missing something here? Is there an alternative approach that's equally easy? Right now, I'm manually iterating over my elements in a foreach and keeping a second list (because you can't delete while iterating), and it's quite ... cumbersome.

• jquery ui autocomplete is changing my listbox

  I am trying to change my comboboxes to use autocomplete so i leverage the code listed here (which worked perfectly for my dropdowns) The issue is that i also on the same page have a listbox with the following code: <%= Html.ListBox("Cars", Model.BodyParts.Select( x => new SelectListItem { Text = x.Name, Value = x.Id, Selected = Model.CarsSelected.Any(y => y.Id == x.Id) } ))%> and it appears that the jquery ui code is changing this to a autocomplete dropdown as well (as opposed to keeping it as a multi select list box) any idea how to prevent this from happening?

• Best practices for cross platform git config?

  Context A number of my application user configuration files are kept in a git repository for easy sharing across multiple machines and multiple platforms. Amongst these configuration files is .gitconfig which contains the following settings for handling the carriage return linefeed characters [core] autocrlf = true safecrlf = false Problem These settings also gets applied on a GNU/Linux platform which causes obscure errors. Question What are some best practices for handling these platform specific differences in configuration files? Proposed solution I realize this problem could be solved by having a branch for each platform and keeping the common stuff in master and merging with the platform branch when master moves forward. I'm wondering if there are any easier solutions to this problem?

• Make Android Activity looks like dialog

  Hi, I am trying to open a dialog on widget click. I have solved the problem skinning the activity started on click with android:theme="@android:style/Theme.Dialog". Unfortunately I cannot reach the same look of a dialog. This is the outcome: http://i50.tinypic.com/n15lcy.png while I would like to reach this result (except for the button, of course): h ttp://i48.tinypic.com/2ithqpc.png (the widget dialog you can see keeping the screen pushed) As you can see there are some differences: the color of the list items, the color of the text and the list item separator. Is there a predefined theme/style to obtain the same look of a standard dialog? If not, what are the steps to follow to reach that result? I have seen that the widget provided by FoxyRing has the behaviour I would like to have. Thanks

  I have run into my first dissapointment with Entity Framework 4. It turns out that SQL CE, when used with EF4, does not support autogenerated primary keys. I get a System.Data.UpdateException from OnjectContext.SaveChanges() with this message: Server-generated keys and server-generated values are not supported by SQL Server Compact. So, now I have to manually generate keys for my entities. Assuming I want to use auto-incremented integer keys, what is the best way to go about generating and keeping track of the keys when using Entity Framework? Thanks for your help.

  Hi all, Let's say I have a situation in Silverlight where there is a background thread (guaranteed to NOT be the UI thread) doing some work and it needs to create a new thread. Something like this: //running in a background thread Thread t = new Thread(new ThreadStart(delegate{}); t.Start(); Lets also say that the UI thread at this particular time is just hanging around doing nothing. Keeping in mind that I am not that knowledgeable about the Silverlight threading model, is there any danger of the new Thread() call giving me the UI thread? The motivation or what I am trying to achieve is not important - I do not want modification to the existing code. I just want to know if there is a possibility of getting the UI thread back unexpectedly. Cheers

  I might be wrong on this, but I no longer see heavy Business and Web services being hosted using J2ee technologies (Especially EJBs). Having known the power and scalability of J2ee applications, what is keeping developers/decision makers to restrict themselves to Core Java (POJOs) or even other web technologies like PHP, python. Is it the development time? Is it the Ease of configuration? (I feel this should not be a strong reason with Java EE 6, things are simplified) Of course scripting languages are faster to develop, we cannot ignore the fact that they are inherently not-as-scalable as Java Applications are (using App servers)

• Multipage WIA scan (docfeeder) scans 1 page and blocks scanner

  Using C# (VS2008) and WIA - scanning to TIFF format; When I use the scanner for 1 page on the flatbed or document feeder the method executes without any problem. When I load multiple forms into the feeder the execution halts after scanning the first page (keeping status: "scanning to pc") but does not scan the next document(s). The method returns the stream of the first page and halts - am able to save the stream and everything; just am lost at what to do next... What statement am I missing? What am I missing here? TIA!

  I'm using git-cvs, and my general workflow is something like this: ...write some code... $ git commit $ git cvsexportcommit -c -p -v <asdf> $ git cvs-import $CVSROOT $ git pull This generally works fine for pushing my commits back to the CVS server and keeping things in sync. However, I'm wondering how I will realize that something is missing if I happen to do the "git commit" but forget to export it to the CVS server. Is there a reasonable way to get a diff between my git repository and the CVS server, so I would know that something hadn't been committed all the way through? Or perhaps there's a better method of doing this altogether?

• Workflow Foundation 4 WorkflowServiceHost Message Correlation

  I have 2 methods on a workflow service hosted in WorkflowServiceHost. The first method is called and starts the regular workflow sequence - talking to other web services, database work etc but on some occassions will pause and persist to db (as-in the delay activity) and wait for some human action to take place before continuing. I need my second method to be able to hook into this persisted workflow, change a local variable and then continuing processing. I have looked at message based correlation in workflow but can only seem to find examples where some kind of infinite while loop keeps the workflow instance active so that the second service method call can arrive whilst it's still running. Because my workflow instance will be delayed/persisted, the second service call doesn't seem to get anywhere (I can't have an infinite while loop keeping the workflow instance active). • Reformatting a table based photo gallery to a UL based gallery

  I have the following code: var table = $('.photogalleryTable').before('<ul class="photogallery"></ul>') table.find('td a').wrap('<li>').parent().appendTo('ul.photogallery'); table.remove(); This code finds a table with a list of photos and re-codes it to use a unordered list instead. The script works perfectly except for one issue. If there are 2 galleries on a page, the script will grab all of the images and reformat them into one list. Because the CMS I'm using tags each gallery table with .photogalleryTable, I'm not sure how to keep the script from touching the other galleries. What I would like to have happen is have the script re-format the first instance and then move on to the next instance, keeping the list of photos separate Is that possible?

  So I have a webserver I've built using sinatra, the meat of which goes like this: set :variable,"value" get '/' do erb :index end And, of course, the template in views/index.erb which looks something like this: <html> <!-- etc --> <ul> <% my_array.each do |thing| %> <%="Something: #{thing}, variable from sinatra: #{settings.variable}"%> <% end %> </ul> </html> If you try running code like this you'll notice that you can't access sinatra's settings variable from inside erb templates. • Cocoa Memory Usage

  I'm trying to track down some peculiar memory behavior in my Cocoa desktop app. My app does a lot of image processing using NSImage and uploads those images to a website over HTTP using NSURLConnection. After uploading several hundred images (some very large), when I run Instrument I get no leaks. I've also run through MallocDebug and get no leaks. When I dig into object allocations using Instrument I get output like this: GeneralBlock-9437184, Net Bytes 9437184, # Net 1 GeneralBlock-192512, Net Bytes 2695168, # Net 14 and etc., for smaller sizes. When I look at these in detail, they're marked as being owned by 'Foundation' and created via NSConcreteMutableData initWithCapacity. During HTTP upload I'm creating a post body using NSMutableData, so I'm guessing these are buffers Cocoa is caching for me when I create the NSMutableData objects. Is there a way to force Cocoa to free these? I'm 90% positive I'm releasing correctly (and Instruments and MallocDebug seem to confirm this), but I think Cocoa is keeping these around for perf reasons since I'm allocating so many MSMutableData buffers.

• android.app.Application subclass, onTerminate is not being called

  From the documentation for android.app.Application: "Base class for those who need to maintain global application state" I am using my own subclass to maintain an object that I'm using to query a server. Also from the documentation: "onTerminate() Called when the application is stopping." However, onTerminate() in my class is never called. I press the back button while viewing my main activity, and everything seems to shut down. My main Activity's onDestroy() method is called and isFinishing() returns true, but my android.app.Application's onTerminate() method is never called. Why is this? What am I missing? Is there something that is keeping it open?

I am using webservice to create Order in Oracle database and websvc will give a response (OrderNumber) and I will inform customer that his Order (OrderNumber) is generated My problem The creation of order is taking too much time in backend system and user is keeping refreshing the page, On each refresh user is coming back to Order create Page, so user is able to click on create Order button again In such cases multiple orders are creating for same orderlines.I can restrict user to create only one order per session in case I got order number in websvc response and I can give ordernumber to customer in next page But real problem come when I didn't get response(Ordernumber) and user is refreshing page. request is already went to Backend system and it will create order and my applicaion will not get response Is there any method in PHP where we can asyncronously check the status of order if first request is initiated by user and it doesn't matter the furthur page navigation Please help me out..   We have a situation where our application needs to process a series of files and rather than perform this function synchronously, we would like to employ multi-threading to have the workload split amongst different threads. Each item of work is: 1. Open a file for read only 2. Process the data in the file 3. Write the processed data to a Dictionary We would like to perform each file's work on a new thread? Is this possible and should be we better to use the ThreadPool or spawn new threads keeping in mind that each item of "work" only takes 30ms however its possible that hundreds of files will need to be processed. Any ideas to make this more efficient is appreciated.

• Configuring Team System Code Analysis via a FxCop rules file

  Is there anyway to configure the code analysis rules in Visual Studio Team System to match those in an FxCop configuration file and keep them in sync automatically? Not all the developers on the team have TS so keeping the rules we are currently running in an FxCop file is required so everyone can run the same set, but it would nice for those with to be able to run them in the IDE. We're introducing static analysis to an existing project so turning on everything now isn't a useful option. (We are not using Foundation Server for source control, if that makes any difference.)
