• Using ctrl-arrow keys with PuTTY and screen

  I searched and couldn't find a solution for this anywhere. I'm using PuTTY from Windows to connect to various servers where I run bash and screen. It seems bash works fine with ctrl-arrow keys to jump word-to-word on the command line but within screen it's not working. Not in screen, ctrl-left sends "^[OC and ctrl-right is "^[OD". Within screen I instead get "^[[C" and "^[[D", which appears to be the codes for just the left/right arrow keys. Is there any way to get screen to recognize ctrl-arrow keys when using PuTTY? (FYI, I don't remember having this problem when using gnu-terminal in linux instead of PuTTY).

  Sometimes, the arrow keys stop working to scroll pages. Sometimes, in Firefox - Tools - Options - Advanced - Accessibility - General, the first checkbox, about using arrow keys to scroll pages, appears checked and some other times, unchecked. When it's unchecked, I check it. When it's checked, I keep it checked. In both times, I click OK. Then, the arrow keys restart working to scroll pages. I'm having to do it all the time. What should I do?

  I realize arrow key remapping is an old problem, however I cannot seem to find a good solution that lets me select text with SHIFT + remapped keys as I would do with the vanilla arrow keys. For instance, if I remap Caps Lock to ISO_Level3_Shift and set xkb_symbols to read either key <AC08> { [ k, K , Down, Down] }; or key <AC08> { type="THREE_LEVEL", [ k, K , Down ] }; Pressing Shift+CapsLock+K will behave exactly as CapsLock+K (while Shift+Down behaves differently from Down alone). I had somewhat more success using higher level macro utilities and generating keyboard events (i.e. generate both the shift and the arrow keypresses); hoever that approach has a whole set of different problems - often the UI response to a simulated keypress is different from the "real" keypress, and there are performance problems as well - I can type faster than the thing can handle. Tl;dr; how can you shift-select using remapped arrow keys under X?

• Microsoft Basic Office 2007 Activation Keys won't work after re-installing on my Laptop

  So, I've upgraded my hard-drive on my laptop, and proceeded to grab my trusty copper-faced Official MS Office disk to do an install. I have three licenses with the fancy green-blue paper that identifies the license keys. Problem is, that for each of these license keys, when the Office 2007 software asks that I enter the "Product Key" it states: The key is incorrect. Verify that you have the correct key, and then retype it Why would Microsoft want to inhibit/prohibit re-installs on the same machine that the software was initially installed to? Incidentally, the same goofy error happens with each of the three valid product key (activation keys) that I enter.

  I have a central server where I stored all the private ssh keys to the different machines that I want to ssh to. Currently, only sysadmins have access to this 'central' server. Given the above scenario, I like to ask the following questions: How do you protect your private ssh keys? I read about ssh-agent but I am not sure how to use it or if it can be used in this situation. If a sysadmin leaves and he copies all the private ssh keys, then he has access to all the servers. How do you deal with this situation?

• problem with using polish keyboard with synergy 1.4.2

  I installed synergy on Windows 7 as server and on Windows Vista as client. On both I can use polish keyboard using local keyboard. When I am using remote keyboard via synergy polish characters are not working (I mean in example S + Alt Gr or S + left Alt + left ctrl) I've used synergy about 1 year ago and I cannot recall that kind of problem so I think the problem is only in current version. Searching through your web site and googled I found only identical problem 5 years ago with information that it was solved. Please help me to sort it out.

• Acrobat keyboard stealing in Firefox

  There are times when I open a pdf in firefox(which uses the acrobat plugin) and the "pdf" steals control of the keyboard. The arrow keys do not work in other programs. Well, If I hold them down they will then work but it becomes hard to navigate that way. It seems acrobat installs a global keyboard hook in some cases and takes control of the keyboard. This didn't start happening until recently(a few months ago). Note that it doesn't happen on all pdfs and everything returns to normal when the pdf is closed. This seems to be an issue with acrobat... maybe a setting? Anyone have any ideas what is going on?

  I am trying to find an .adm or GPO settings so when any users login to the 2003/2008 server using Windows 7/windows xp pro client it will add the keyboard Chinese PRC (one of the inputs that is listed) in the language bar.   I am talking about during installation. Using regular licensing, not volume licensing. Amongst OSes of the same class, are CD keys interchangeable or are they locked to a specific subset of CDs? In other words: If I have 10 legally purchased copies of Windows 7 Professional, can I throw out the discs for all but one? And all the CD keys will work? UPDATE: How about for service packs (when they come out). If I have Windows 7 Professional SP1 and a Windows 7 RTM original? Do they change CD keys between service packs?

• How to use cursor keys to switch buffers in GNU screen

  I want to use cursor keys or cursor keys with a modifier like Ctrl to switch between screen buffers (e.g. C-a [arrow] or C-a C-[arrow]). So far I have tried settings like the ones below with no success. bind \224\115 prev bind \224\116 next bindkey -d ^[[1;5D prev bindkey -d ^[[1;5C next They are either ignored or behave unexpectedly (the second one). I am also not sure how to specify the keys. To get the characters, I either used C-v to quote them in bash, or tried to look-up on the Internet (e.g. http://ascii-table.com/ansi-escape-sequences.php). Any idea how I can achieve this key binding?

• SQL SERVER – Disable Clustered Index and Data Insert

  Earlier today I received following email. “Dear Pinal, [Removed unrelated content] We looked at your script and found out that in your script of disabling indexes, you have only included non-clustered index during the bulk insert and missed to disabled all the clustered index. Our DBA[name removed] has changed your script a bit and included all the clustered indexes. Since our application is not working. When DBA [name removed] tried to enable clustered indexes again he is facing error incorrect syntax error. We are in deep problem [word replaced] [Removed Identity of organization and few unrelated stuff ]“ I have replied to my client and helped them fixed the problem. What really came to my attention is the concept of disabling clustered index. Let us try to learn a lesson from this experience. In this case, there was no need to disable clustered index at all. I had done necessary work when I was called in to work on tuning project. I had removed unused indexes, created few optimal indexes and wrote a script to disable few selected high cost indexes when bulk insert (and similar) operations are performed. There was another script which rebuild all the indexes as well. The solution worked till they included clustered index in disabling the script. Clustered indexes are in fact original table (or heap) physically ordered (any more things – not scope of this article) according to one or more keys(columns). When clustered index is disabled data rows of the disabled clustered index cannot be accessed. This means there will be no insert possible. When non clustered indexes are disabled all the data related to physically deleted but the definition of the index is kept in the system. Due to the same reason even reorganization of the index is not possible till the clustered index (which was disabled) is rebuild. Now let us come to the second part of the question, regarding receiving the error when clustered index is ‘enabled’. This is very common question I receive on the blog. (The following statement is written keeping the syntax of T-SQL in mind) Clustered indexes can be disabled but can not be enabled, they have to rebuild. It is intuitive to think that something which we have ‘disabled’ can be ‘enabled’ but the syntax for the same is ‘rebuild’. This issue has been explained here: SQL SERVER – How to Enable Index – How to Disable Index – Incorrect syntax near ‘ENABLE’. Let us go over this example where inserting the data is not possible when clustered index is disabled. I need it to be able to: Allow scrolling of the contents of the UIScrollView to see the other text fields once the keyboard is brought up Automatically "jump" (by scrolling up) or shortening I know that I need a UIScrollView. I've tried changing the class of my UIView to a UIScrollView but I'm still unable to scroll the textboxes up or down. Do I need both a UIView and a UIScrollView? Does one go inside the other? [EDIT: I now know that you want a UIView inside of a UIScrollView, and the trick is to programatically set the content size of the UIScrollView to the frame size of the UIView.] Then what needs to be implemented in order to automatically scroll to the active text field? Ideally as much of the setup of the components as possible will be done in Interface Builder. I'd like to only write code for what needs it. Note: the UIView (or UIScrollView) that I'm working with is brought up by a tabbar (UITabBar), which needs to function as normal. Edit: I am adding the scroll bar just for when the keyboard comes up. Even though it's not needed, I feel like it provides a better interface because then the user can scroll and change textboxes, for example. • Synchronizing one or more databases with a master database - Foreign keys

  I'm using Google Gears to be able to use an application offline (I know Gears is deprecated). The problem I am facing is the synchronization with the database on the server. The specific problem is the primary keys or more exactly, the foreign keys. When sending the information to the server, I could easily ignore the primary keys, and generate new ones. But then how would I know what the relations are. I had one sollution in mind, bet the I would need to save all the pk for every client. What is the best way to synchronize multiple client with one server db. Edit: I've been thinking about it, and I guess seqential primary keys are not the best solution, but what other possibilities are there? Time based doesn't seem right because of collisions which could happen. A GUID comes to mind, is that an option? It looks like generating a GUID in javascript is not that easy. I can do something with natural keys or composite keys. As I'm thinking about it, that looks like the best solution. Can I expect any problems with that?

  I'm using a virtual keyboard. I have a checkbox that controls whether the virtual keyboard is displayed or not. The thing is that I don't understand how to disable it. I try to unbind it but it doesn't work...   It is nice that there are services such as TypeRacer where you can practice casual writing but I want to practice programmer keys, covers more numbers and keys not used by regular typist. There was some tutor with which I practiced some programmer keys and noticed that my speed dropped dramatically from 70-80 wpm to even about 15-30 wpm, it also trains different muscles. So how can I practice just programming keys with programming texts or just random code pieces?

• Can't bind gnome-do to Super + Space or Ctrl+Alt+Space

  With today's updates to 12.04 I can no longer bind gnome-do to either ctrl+alt+space or super+space. With 11.10 it wasn't possible to use super+space, on a fresh install of 12.04 super+space was working properly. Today it stopped working, if I try to bind control+alt+space then the controlkey shows up in the keyboard binding as Primary. I am running Unity, which in the past blocked super+space, it seemed to have stopped blocking it on 12.04. It shouldn't affect ctrl+alt+space. Configuring either binding produces the following error in the gnome-do output: libdo-WARNING **: Binding 'space' failed! libdo-WARNING **: Binding 'space' failed! I'm stuck binding to shift+alt+space.

• 12.04 How do I disable the long press Super key from showing the shortcuts window?

  Note this is the long press and not the one for the short press as mentioned here How do I disable the Super key? The super key has been a modifier long before Unity came, and I have used it on Compiz Zoom feature. So holding super down and moving the mouse scroll would zoom in and out the screen. But now in 12.04 the shortcut list screen pops up and it is irritating. I have also tried changing the keys to control +super + mouse scroll and a similar thing happens. Is there anyway to disable or change the long press super key for this, I have searched Compiz Unity plugin, the Systems Preferences - Keyboard shortcuts settings and haven't been able to find this.

• Rebind Alt key to win using setxkbmap?

  Hi, After an hour or two of manpage and Google searching and finding no solution or good resources, I've come for help! I have set my Caps Lock key to Ctrl using setxkbmap -option ctrl:nocaps - this works perfectly fine. However, since I use [awesome][1], and an IBM model M which lacks the meta key, I need my left alt key to replace the windows key. Using xkeycaps I was able to get this to work, except it killed my arrow keys and End. Problematic. Unfortunately, documentation on setxkbmap options are sparse. and I can't find the proper option to use. Thanks for any links/solutions.

• Difference in fans on Windows 7 and Ubuntu 12.04

  I have bought a Hp Pavilion DV7 with Core i7 CPU and installed Ubuntu 12.04 on dual boot with Windows 7 alongside. Apart from the difference in battery life (although that's fixed with Jupiter), I have another problem with the fans. On Windows my fans work perfectly and the laptop is cool, but it seems to overheat in Ubuntu. It becomes quite hot and it looks like my fans are not working under Ubuntu. I think I'm having the same problem as How can I keep the cpu temp low?, but since I cannot comment because of the lack of reputation (?), I post the question as a new thread. I think the result of the overheating is that my keyboard doesn't seem to follow when I start typing a long text. It just freezes and types the last letter multiple times. For example: when I type the word freezes, it shows freeeee so the zes changed into eee...

• Why did ctrl-f stop working in LibreOffice?

  I've basically settled into Unity, but one constant that is kind of giving me agita is that in LibreOffice Calc (and Writer) ctrl-f does nothing. I can go to edit > find ... and the edit menu even suggests ctrl-f as a keyboard shortcut, but actually typing it doesn't do anything. ctrl-alt-f works fine. The only thing that doesn't work is ctrl-f. I had a really hard time getting settled with Unity (mostly trying to get my old Gnome-do and Compiz settings back) so I spent a lot of time monkeying with the Compiz Settings Manager. But I can't figure out where I would have unset/ overrode this. Plus, it isn't like ctrl-f does something unexpected. It just does nothing.
