• Base 128 or 256 Encoding for the Binary Lexical Octet Adhoc Transport Protocol?

  I'm in the process of implementing a network driver for the Binary Lexical Octet Adhoc Transport (BLOAT) protocols in the hopes of replacing the TCP/UDP/IP stack with a much more flexible XML structure. BLOAT is detailed in RFC 3252, so if you're unfamiliar with the protocol I highly recommend you read the entire RFC before providing any comments. Don't worry, it's short and sweet; you might even enjoy it. Anyway, my problem is this: BLOAT requires that the payload be Base64 encoded which doesn't make sense to me. I mean, sure, it's the internet standard for binary payloads, but there are better, more efficient encodings available: Base128 and Base256, for example. That the RFC requires Base64 and doesn't allow for any other payload encoding really bothers me. To that end, I'm considering a small optional change to the protocol. Embrace and extend, right? Anyway, I'd like to modify the payload element to accept an encoding attribute, which can extend the encoding to Base128 or Base256, or even to other encodings I can't conceive of at the moment. If the encoding attribute isn't present, Base64 would be assumed. So my question is this: should I? I mean, BLOAT is an accepted standard, even if it isn't exactly omnipresent. If I make this change, will there be compatibility issues? I don't foresee any, but perhaps you, oh great Stack Overflow Community, can? If I do implement this change, should I contact the original RFC author? Should I offer a supplemental RFC?

• Spatial Rotation in Gmod Expression2.

  I'm using expression2 to program behavior in Garry's mod (http://wiki.garrysmod.com/?title=Wire_Expression2) Okay so, to set the precedent. In Gmod I have a block and I am at a complete loss of how to get it to rotate around the 3 up, down and right vectors (Which are local. ie; if I pitch it 45 degrees the forward vector is 0.707, 0.707, 0). Essentially, From the 3 vectors I'd like to be able to get local Pitch/Roll/Yaw. By Local Pitch Roll Yaw I mean that they are completely independent of one another allowing true 3d rotation. So for example; if I place my craft so its nose is parallel to the floor the X,Y,Z would be 0,0,0. If I turn it parallel to the floor (World and Local Yaw) 90 degrees it's now 0, 0, 90. If I then pitch it (World Roll, Local Pitch) it 180 degrees it's now 180, 0, 90. I've already explored quaternions however I don't believe I should post my code here as I think I was re-inventing the wheel. I know I didn't explain that well but I believe the problem is pretty generic. Any help anyone could offer is greatly appreciated. Oh, I'd like to avoid gimblelock too. Essentially calculating the rotation around each of the crafts up/forward/right vectors using the up/forward/right vectors. To simply the question a generic implementation rather than one specific to Gmod is absolutely fine.

  That is a broad question, and I appreciate no short/dumb asnwers like: "Oh that is the model job, this quest is retarded (period)" PROBLEM Where I work at people created a system over 2 years for managing the manufacture process over demand in the most simplified still broad as possible, involving selling, buying, assemble, The system is coded over Ruby On Rails. The app has been changed lots of times and the result is a mess on callbacks (some are called several times), 200+ models, and fat controllers: Total bad. The QUESTION is, if there is a gem, or pattern designed to handle Rails large app logic? The logic whould be able to fully talk to models (whose only concern would be data format handling and validation) What I EXPECT is to reduce complexity from various controllers, and hard to track callbacks into files with the responsibility to handle a business operation logic. In some cases there is the need to wait for a response, in others, only validation of the input is enough and a bg process would take place. ie: -- Sell some products (need to wait the operation to finish) 1. Set a View able to get the products input 2. Controller gets the product list inputed by employee and call the logic Logic::ExecuteWithResponse('sell', 'products', :prods => @product_list_with_qtt, :when => @date, :employee => current_user() ) This Logic would handle buying order, assemble order, machine schedule, warehouse reservation, and others. Have in mind that a callback on SalesOrder is not enough, since it depends on where it is called (no field for that), depends on the class of the user, among other stuff not visible for the model, or in some cases it would take long for the model to process.

• loading js files and other dependent js files asynchronously

  I'm looking for a clean way to asynchronously load the following types of javascript files: a "core" js file (hmm, let's just call it, oh i don't know, "jquery!" haha), x number of js files that are dependent on the "core" js file being loaded, and y number of other unrelated js files. I have a couple ideas of how to go about it, but not sure what the best way is. I'd like to avoid loading scripts in the document body. So for example, I want the following 4 javascript files to load asynchronously, appropriately named: /js/my-contact-page-js-functions.js // unrelated/independent script /js/jquery-1.3.2.min.js // the "core" script /js/jquery.color.min.js // dependent on jquery being loaded http://thirdparty.com/js/third-party-tracking-script.js // another unrelated/independent script But this won't work because it's not guaranteed that jQuery is loaded before the color plugin... • Android/Java -- Post simple text to Facebook wall?

  Hello all, I'm trying to integrate posting to one's wall from within my app. I already have an area where the user can save his/her username and password (encrypted). I would like my program to recall the saved username and password, pass that to Facebook for authentication, and then allow the app to post simple text (maybe a link too) to the user's wall. That said, I've read everything on the developer pages at Facebook (the api looks completely foreign to me... I've never don't any type of web app development before... just desktop apps), and experimented with the Java libraries here: http://wiki.developers.facebook.com/index.php/User:Java but to be honest, I don't understand any of the various implementations. Some claim to be simple to use, but apparently they are all way above my head. I've even tried messing with the official Facebook Android SDK, but that uses a webview interface, and I can't pass in the username and password for easy authentication. Plus, I'm still clueless as to how to post to the wall even after correct authentication. Please help. Thanks. Oh, btw I already have a Facebook API key and Application ID.

• How bad is code using std::basic_string<t> as a contiguous buffer?

  I know technically the std::basic_string template is not required to have contiguous memory. However, I'm curious how many implementations exist for modern compilers that actually take advantage of this freedom. • A declarative workflow does not start automatically after you install Windows SharePoint Services 3.

  That's the title of kb947284 actually. Recently I was involved in a Sharepoint project. I run into this problem where my workflow does not start automatically. If I run the workflow manually, it's just fine. I found kb947284. Apparently the cause of this problem is the installation of WSS 3 SP1. I did what it said in the Resolution section but it didn't work. The Resolution said to set the application pool account to use a different user account. What kind of different does it mean? What kind of user account will work? I changed the user account but both old and new account is in the same group of administrator for the server where SP is installed. Oh! I also found a copy of kb947284 and one comments stated there is already a hotfix (kb956057). I've read the issues that are fixed but could not find anywhere about this workflow problem. Could anyone please tell me how it's supposed to be done? Thanks in advance.

I've tried manually adding the headers to the request, as well as using the setRemoteCredentials() method to set them, to no avail.   I'm making a program where you're firing a 'blaster', and I have 5 ammo. I'm blasting an alien who has 5 health. At the end I instantiate the player and make him blast 6 times to check that the program works correctly. But the way I've done it makes it so that the amount won't decrease.   Hi, Hit an interesting problem today when trying to upload an image file < 2MB using dojo.io.iframe. I've got very similar code in my application that uploads word/pdf documents and that doesn't error, but for some reason this does. Any ideas or pointers on what I should try to get this to work without errors? Here is an example: id user_id message 1 Adam "Adam is here." 2 Peter "Hi there this is Peter." 3 Peter "I am getting sick." 4 Josh "Oh, snap. I'm on a boat!" 5 Tom "This show is great." 6 Laura "Textmate rocks." What i want to achive is to select the recently active users from my db. Let's say i want to select the 5 recently active users. The problem is, that the following script selects Peter twice. mysql_query("SELECT * FROM messages ORDER BY id DESC LIMIT 5 "); What i want is to skip the row when it gets again to Peter, and select the next result, in our case Adam. So i don't want to show my visitors that the recently active users were Laura, Tom, Josh, Peter, and Peter again. That does not make any sense, instead i want to show them this way: Laura, Tom, Josh, Peter, (skipping Peter) and Adam. Is there an SQL command i can use for this problem?

• Can't write the SysWow64 value to registry with vbscript for Screensaver

  Scripts, registries, screen-savers, oh my! I'm trying to use a screen-saver on a Windows XP 64 bit machine which uses a .NET app which makes an interop call which relies on some x86 Shockwave Dlls (some Shockwave animation). Everything should be in the %systemroot%\WINNT\SysWOW64 directory. When the timeout for the screensaver occurs, the process should looks like this: Screensaver.scr - .NET app - shockwave animation. During installation I want a vbscript to my screen-saver file to copy the Screensaver.scr to the SysWow64 directory and then set the proper registry key to this file for Windows to launch the screen-saver. The screen-saver won't run from this directory. It only runs from SysWOW64. If I manually edit the registry with regedit to the correct SysWOW64 path everything works fine. Is this a problem with using the script or is this a Windows registry redirection, or filesystem redirection problem? You'd think this would be simple...

  Hi there, We seem to be having a problem with the spell checker on our content management system where it marks the ve part of We’ve as a misspelling. The spellchecker uses aspell which is called from a script on the server which executes the cmd.exe and uses it to pipe a file into aspell (it's a long winded way I know, but our server side programming langauge (ColdFusion) doesn't support writing to stdin for executables). Aspell is called by executing: c:\windows\system32\cmd.exe /c type d:\path_to_file\file.txt | "C:\Program Files\Aspell\bin\aspell" --lang=en -a Where file.txt contains the text to be spelled e.g. ^Oh have We’ve (the carat is added to prevent piping problems I believe). • Is it possible to have a SeekBar's thumb image extend outside the bar?

  I have set negative paddings on my custom seekbar so that the round thumb image can go outside the bar, but the thumb isn't rendered out there, is there anyway to force the thumb to be drawn outside those bounds? Sorry guys, I'm new to Android development, and have been tasked with fixing an existing application. The problem is that we have a custom rounded looking track bar, which consists of two rounded 'end cap' images and a 1 px background that is tiled to create the seekbar. As far as I can tell there was never one image that could be set as the background of a normal SeekBar, which is why a custom one was created. The thumb is a circle and needs to 'fit' into the end caps - the three pieces of the bar are in a relative layout. Right now I'm kind of unclear as to how the 1 px background png gets stretched as the seekbar bg, otherwise I would try to tack on the two endcaps onto that drawable some how ... ? Please let me know if this was unclear and I'll try to post any followup info. Thanks in advance for any advice!! Oh, I'm using Android 2.1 if that's relevant to anyone's interests :)

  That is a broad question, and I appreciate no short/dumb asnwers like: "Oh that is the model job, this quest is retarded (period)" PROBLEM Where I work at people created a system over 2 years for managing the manufacture process over demand in the most simplified still broad as possible, involving selling, buying, assemble, The system is coded over Ruby On Rails. The result has been changed lots of times and the result is a mess on callbacks (some are called several times), 200+ models, and fat controllers: Total bad. The QUESTION is, if there is a gem, or pattern designed to handle Rails large app logic? The logic whould be able to fully talk to models (whose only concern would be data format handling and validation) What I EXPECT is to reduce complexity from various controllers, and hard to track callbacks into files with the responsibility to handle a business operation logic. In some cases there is the need to wait for a response, in others, only validation of the input is enough and a bg process would take place. ie: -- Sell some products (need to wait the operation to finish) 1. Set a View able to get the products input 2. Controller gets the product list inputed by employee and call the logic Logic::ExecuteWithResponse('sell', 'products', :prods => @product_list_with_qtt, :when => @date, :employee => current_user() ) This Logic would handle buying order, assemble order, machine schedule, warehouse reservation, and others

• Shared Server Dreamhost

  I am trying to install an app on a shared server. If i understand properly because i am using a shared server, and that Dreamhost doesn't suppose rails 3.2.8 I must use FCGI, although i am not sure how to install and to make it run properly. From this tutorial http://wiki.dreamhost.com/Rails_3. • What is a good standard exercise to learn the OO features of a language?

  When I'm learning a new language, I often program some mathematical functions to get used to the control flow syntax. After that, I like to implement some sorting algorithms to get used to the array/list constructs. But I don't have a standard exercise for exploring the languages OO features. Does anyone have a stock exercise for this? A good answer would naturally lend to inheritance, polymorphism, etc., for a programmer already comfortable with these concepts. An ideal answer would be one that could be communicated in a few words, without ambiguity, in the way that "implement mergesort" is completely unambiguous. (As an example, answering "design a game" is so vague as to be useless.) Any ideas? EDIT: I have to remark that the results here are somewhat ironic. 10 upvotes and (originally) 5 favorites suggest that this is a question others are interested in. Yet the most upvoted answer is one that says there is no good answer. Oh well. I think I'll look at the textbook below, I've found games useful in the past for OO.

• How to scrape Google SERP based on copyright year?

  Hi all: I know there must be ways to do this sort of things. I am not pro in RoR or Python, not even an expert in PHP. So my solution tends to be quite dumb: It uses a FireFox add-on called imarcos to scrape the target urls from Google SERP, and use PHP to store info into the database. At the very core of my workaround there lies a problem: How to specifically find target urls based on their copyright year? I mean, something like "copyright 1998-2006" in the footer is to be considered a target, but my search results are not 100% accurate. I used the following url to search : http://www.google.com.au/#hl=en&q=inurl:.com.au+intext:copyright+1995..2007+--2008+--2009&start=0&cad=b&fp=6a8119b094529f00 It reads : search for pages that have .com.au in URL and a copyright range from 1995 to 2007 exclude the year of 2008 or 2009. Starting position is 0, of course the offset can be changed. I've already done a dummy list and honestly I am not pleased with the result. That's mostly because I cannot find a way to restrict search terms in the exact order as they are entered into the search url. copyright can appear in anywhere on page and doesn't necessarily before the years, that's the current story. Is there a more clear way to sort out this? Oh, almost forgot to say the client doesn't wanna spent too much in this - I cannot persuade him simply buy some cool software, unfortunately. I hope there is a way to use clever Google search operators or similar things to go around this issue. Many thanks in advance!

Is there a good method of mocking up code using Boost::Test over my Ad-hoc method? I've seen several people recommend Google Mock, but it requires a lot of ugly hacks if your functions are not virtual, which I would like to avoid. Oh: One last thing. I don't need assertions that a particular piece of code was called. I simply need to be able to inject data that would normally be returned by Windows API functions.

• MD5 Hashing Given a Key in C#

  I've been looking for a way to hash a given string in C# that uses a predetermined key. On my adventures through the internet trying to find an example i have seen lots of MD5CryptoServiceProvider examples which seem to use a default key for the machine, but none of them that apply a specific key. I need to have a specific key to encode data as to synchronize it to someone else's server. I hand them a hashed string and an ID number and they use that analyze the data and return a similar set to me. So is there anyway to get md5 to hash via a specific key that would be consistent to both. I would prefer this to be done in C#, but if its not possible with the libraries can you do so with some web languages like php or asp? Edit: Misunderstood the scenario I was thrown into and after a little sitting and thinking about why they would have me use a key it appears they want a key appended to the end of the string and hashed. That way the server can appended the key it has along with the data passed to ensure its a valid accessing computer. Anyways... thanks all ^_^ Edit2: As my comment below says, it was the term 'salting' I was oblivious to. Oh the joys of getting thrown into something new with no directions.

• How to get interpolated message in NHibernate.Validator

I'm trying to integrate NHibernate.Validator with ASP.NET MVC client side validations, and the only problem I found is that I simply can't convert the non-interpolated message to a human-readable one. I thought this would be an easy task, but turned out to be the hardest part of the client-side validation. The main problem is that because it's not server-side, I actually only need the validation attributes that are being used, and I don't actually have an instance or anything else at hand.
