• Why am I unable to send an attachment with Outlook via SMTP that I am able to send via Gmail / Google Apps?

  I have Google Apps installed and I have tried to set up Outlook 2007 to send messages via SMTP. I followed the guide, selecting what I believe are all the correct settings. Yes, I am using POP for incoming, that is intentional but I don't believe it should affect outgoing messages. When I log into gmail (google apps) for my company, I can send a message that has an 8MB attachment (pdf file, not zipped or anything) and it sends fine. However, when I send the same message in Outlook with that same 8mb attachment it fails. Why am I unable to send an attachment with Outlook via SMTP that I am able to send via Gmail / Google Apps? The message headers are (some info omitted for privacy): Technical details of permanent failure: Google tried to deliver your message, but it was rejected by the recipient domain. We recommend contacting the other email provider for further information about the cause of this error. • What are possible reasons why a calendar entry in OWA is at a different time than in Outlook?

  We have two Exchange 2003 servers, our primary server and a front-end server that hosts Outlook Web Access (OWA). When I open my boss' calendar via Outlook 2007 (from my Outlook client as well as hers) I see the event scheduled for 10:30 am. When I open her calendar via Outlook Web Access, the same event is scheduled for 4:30 am. I don't understand Exchange well-enough to imagine how this is possible. If you have any ideas why this could be happening, I greatly appreciate it. I'd also very much appreciate any insight you have to how this could be possible. There must be some cached data on the front-end server that causes the calendar entry to appear at a different time, I suppose. Any insight into how Exchange manages that cache and where I could look for an issue would be very helpful. Thank you!

  How can I synchronise my desktop Outlook calendar with my Google Calendar (Outlook - Google)? I saw the question Free tool for Synchronizing Google Contacts and Calendar with Outlook, but the solution that was suggested there is no longer available - Google Sync End of Life. There are tools that required a payment, like SyncMyCal, gSyncit and OggSync, but I am looking for a free / open source solution. One can download Google sync, but when trying to use it there's an error: For now, I use OggSync to synchronise, but as a freeware it allows to synchronise manually only, not automatically, so I have to remember to synchronise after every change. I checked Mozilla Sunbird, but I couldn't find any relative posts on how to synchronise Outlook - Google using it. Just to be clear: I'm not looking for software; I am looking for a solution. What can I do if sometimes software is a solution?

• Outlook 2010: Can I search Only My: Inbox, All Inbox Subfolders, and Specified Archive File Folders all at once

  The setup is a user that has a laptop with Outlook 2010. We have Outlook hosted by Sherweb. The user that has a large number of emails (40,000) in a single Inbox subfolder. (I believe) Having such a large number of emails in an inox is slowing the users laptop down and I want to start moving old emails to a seperate pst file on a machine on our network. The problem I have is the user needs to be able to search all 40,000 emails. Right now he can can search do a search on the single subfolder. I would like to be able to move some of the emails to a seperate pst so I can compact the Inbox and still give them a 'one-click' search function that is still fairly quick. I don't think the 'Search All Outlook Items' is the soltuion because this will search all outlook folders -- sent items, other public folders. P.S. I'm not a expericenced outlook administrator, so there may be some assumptions in my questions that are wrong. I have no problem with somebody showing the error of my ways.

• What's a good way to do testing a plug-in on multiple Windows and Outlook versions?

  Hello, We're building a plug-in for Outlook that should work on multiple Windows versions (XP, Vista, 7) and also with different Outlook versions (2003, 2007, 2010). The testing problem I am facing right now, is that I can't figure out a good/convenient/thorough way to test the application on multiple Windows and Outlook versions. At the moment, I have a VirtualBox which runs many virtual machines, with different Windows versions and Outlook versions. So I would have a virtual machine with Windows 7 testing Outlook 2010, and another one with Windows 7 testing Outlook 2007, Windows Vista with Outlook 2010 and so on, going through some of the possible combinations. It kind of gets the job done, although it is cumbersome and takes a long time to test. Some of the testing included in the application is unit testing, but this is also rather tied in with the machine I test it on (windows 7 with outlook 2010). For example, I was using ManagementObject recently, which worked fine on my system (and thus passed the unit test for that method), however, using that object threw an exception in another person's system, which crashed the application. I work on Visual Studio 2010 Ultimate. The questions: Is there a more elegant way to make the testing process more streamline and more efficient? Any other testing methods you recommend? • How to get better video quality in Lync?

  I want to use a ConferenceCam from Logitech to stream talks live via Lync. When I view the RAW webcam image via VLC, the quality is very good (but the latency is high because of buffering). However, when I stream it using Lync, the video gets blurry. Is there a way to ensure QoS in Lync or otherwise improve the video quality to (near-)native? I would rather have some dropped frames than a lower resolution where I can't read the slides. In my setup, I use Lync with an Office365-E3 contract, so I have no Lync-Server in my network. I thought about replacing Lync completely with VLC, but I first want to try Lync because VLC will probably cause firewall issues. Also, I haven't looked up the VLC parameters for less buffering, faster encoding, a bit lower resolution (natively it's more than HD) and streaming.

There are a lot of things in it I don't know how to do, such as: Having header rows that "stick" to the top even when you scroll down Slider on the first page changes where the chart pulls its data from Functions seem to be referring to named ranges in tables, like =SUM([nov]). Where do those names come from? Clicking "back to overview" on the "Budget" page returns you to the "Dashboard" page The number under "starting balance" of the top right corner of "Budget" changes when you change cell C5 On "Budget", each cell in the first column of each table has a drop-down menu for text, which seems to come from the "Setup" page The background isn't just plain white, but when I try to format paint it onto a new sheet, nothing happens If you know how any of these effects are achieved, I'm definitely curious. But I guess the main point of my question is where I can go to answer these questions for myself. Are templates explained anywhere?

• Windows Server Configuration with Exchange, SQL Express and IIS

  In our small office we are currently running a standalone tower server with WS 2008 R2, SQL Express and IIS. This server is going to be decommissioned and scrapped as its old and very noisy. We are going to purchase a new server with WS 2012 Standard and a heap of ram. It will still be a standalone server so it will be a domain controller, have SQL Express and IIS installed. We intend to install the hyper-v role and host a second virtual server to distribute the load. We are a small company and have only 15 staff members so its not a huge load on the server. Can a single server handle this type of installation, we don't want to purchase two servers. If so how should it be configured with regard to which software packages should be virtualized(if any). Redundancy is not a huge issue for us.

• Don't break header/footer when making page landscape format

  I have a document with a footer with page numbering and a header with some centered text. Long story short: I flipped one page to landscape format. Long story long: I made a forced page break to get a blank page. I then highlighted this page (that is, I highlighted the empty line on this page) and went to the page proporties menu window, clicked on the landscape format button, and chose to apply this setting for the highlighted text only. The result: All that is of course no big deal, and my page is flipped the 90 degrees as wished - but my header and footer break! They disappear from this page... and actually also from the next page (which is still upright portrait format), which is weird. And then the header and footer is back on the following pages again, though the page numbering restarts from 1. On this screenshot you can see that the previous and the following pages have headers and footers, but not the flipped one and not the page following the flipped one. What just happened here? How can I make the page numbering continue without restarting first of all, and then, how can I keep the header and footer on at least the upright page, that suddenly doesn't have them?

  I have a spreadsheet where there is one table with the headings: Coordinate, Lat, Long Another with headings Triangle, Coordinate 1, Coordinate 2, Coordinate 3, Area What this is for, is taking the triangles formed by the specified three coordinates' area based off of Girard's theorem, as they are all spherical triangles. I need to take the specific latitude and longitude values from the first table based on the coordinate numbers underneath the three coordinate headings in the second table. I hope this makes sense. I would like it to search through all the lines in column A, to find something that has that name in it, then it should count the number of people, and come out with the number (in how many) the "middle price" I want it to take the price of B (depending on where it found it called headphones) and take the average price of it. In secured, as I would like it to count how many of them (from the number, or from the beginning) that have "secured" as "no" and "yes." I would like to use this on several things. For what is marked in pink: Where would I find the average price of all the goods, and what the name of the particular item is? Same with the highest and lowest price. How can I do this?

• Set default expand/colapse state on pivot tables

  The Setup I have a pivot table in tabular form pulling data from an Analysis Services Cube. I want to calculate the number of days between two dates, but the setup will only allow me to pull in all date elements, not just the date. I’ve been able to deal with this easily enough by just grouping all the columns: The Problem The default state for the expand/collapse buttons in the image above is often collapsed, but that means the dates I need aren’t there and you have to open the group and manually expand them. This also happens in some random ways (as shown in the image) where only some rows expand. The Question I need a way to set these sections to always be expanded, so that the user never has to open the group to expand the rows. Ideally I’d like to avoid VBA because our end users often block it, but if that’s what’s needed then so be it. Is there a way to set my pivot table to never collapse it’s predefined groups? Note the end user is using Excel 2010

• Exchange can't send emails with attachments

  No one in our organization can send emails with attachments. Emails without attachments go through fine, but if an attachment is included, an error appears in the Server Failures folder under Sync Issues. The error is "The following message had an error and synchronization of it was skipped (0xc0090081)". We are using Symantec Mail Security, which we shut down to try to troubleshoot the problem, and now that fails to load. Any ideas as to what to check? I'm sorry I don't have more complete information, but I'm helping someone try to figure this out. I'm not the admin myself. Thanks.

  When I create a new user in exchange, it asks me to provide the User Logon Name. There is a dropdown box that supposedly allows you to select a domain for the user's login. What is this referring to? How can I make it so that I can create users with different domains in their user logon name? p.s. I am very aware of 'Accepted Domains' in Exchange allowing one user to have several email addresses in different domains. I am just curious how I can modify the user's Logon name specifically.

• Two related cells: give a value in one, calculate the other, and vice versa?

  How can I have a cell that uses the literal value written into it, or calculates its value when no literal value was given? For example: I have two columns: column B with a price including VAT, and column C with a price without VAT. If I put a price with VAT in B2, then I want cell C2 to calculate the price without VAT based on B2. But if I put a price without VAT in C2, then I want cell B2 to calculate the price with VAT from C2. I want to give this spreadsheet to my mother, who barely understands Excel. She just has to enter the values that she knows, and the worksheet should derive the other values from that.

I know that we should have a cert signed by a CA, but the balancer has options for SSL cert or intermediate cert, and I'm unclear on the difference, or on which we need. The start date of the task should automatically be calculated taking dependencies and resource availabilities into account. My question boils down to: How can I force this task to start and end on the same date? Background: In my case, Microsoft Project sets the start date to a Friday at 5pm. As my working hours are set to 8am to 12am and 1pm to 6pm (Mon-Fri), Microsoft Project "splits up" the task at 6pm on Friday and plans to continue it at 8am on the following Monday. However, it does not make any sense to stop the interview on a Friday and restart it on Monday. Therefore the automatic suggestion is not helpful in this case. That's why I'm looking for a way way to force the task to start and end on the very same day. (In my example, I'd like Microsoft Project to delay the start date of the task until Monday 8am as this is the first time slot in which the task "fits in completely".) By the way: I have lots of such cases... for that reason it would be really great if there was a solution that doesn't just deal with this single special case.)

• Excel Extending Equations

  So I have an excel table that is multiply 1 value against several other values. It looks like this: So I want the equations inside cells C14 to F14 to be B14*C5, B14*C6, B14*C7, B14*C8 respectively. So I can obviously do that manually but I want to learn the faster way. So I know I should use absolute reference for B14, so I can input =$B$14*C5 for cell C14. But then when I do the CTRL extend method where you put the cursor on the bottom right corner of the cell and hold CTRL while you extend the cells. The problem is since I am extending the equation in B14 horizontally to F14, it is incrementing the equation horizontally. So the equation in D14 becomes =$B$14*D5 instead of =$B$14*C6. So how exactly do I increment the equation downwards while I extend the equation horizontally?

  I have a spreadsheet where column A displays names. There are a few hundred names and each has a different hyperlink (which links to that person's web page). I want to transfer those hyperlinks across to a different column which has different text in and no hyperlinks. Not every cell in column A has a hyperlink. There are groups of cells merged together, so A2:A7 has one link, A8:A13 the next, A9:10 the next (i.e. number of cells merged is not uniform). e.g. where A2:A7 reads "Bob" and links to www.bob.com, I want I2:I7, which reads, "Smith," and does not link to anything, to link to www.bob.com. I want to do this repeatedly, copying links from A2:A579 into I2:I579. The information is copied from a table within a web page, and that is where the hyperlinks come from.

• Excel: How do I copy hyperlink address from one column of text to another column with different text?

  I have a spreadsheet where column A displays names in a certain format. There are 200-odd names and each has a different hyperlink (which links to that person's web page). I want to reformat the name order so it is "Surname, Name" rather than "Name Surname" and retain the hyperlink in the newly formatted column. I have achieved "Surname, Name" easily by splitting the names into two columns (using LEFT and RIGHT formulae) - forename and surname - then I have a new column with a formula to return "Surname, Name." However, the hyperlinks are not in that new column and I need them. I don't want to do this manually, for obvious reasons. I cannot find a way of copying just hyperlinks from column A without copying the text from column A. So, effectively, what I need is some sort of macro to take, for example, the hyperlink from A2 and copy it to H2, with H2 still retaining the updated ordering of name. I don't have the knowledge to write this myself, so would appreciate solutions.

The default (database) sorting is earliest to latest: When I click the triangle next to 'Row Labels' and select "Sort A to Z", I get alphabetically sorted times: How can I get the times to sort by time? Changing the number format from "General" to "Time" does nothing. The times aren't stored as text either - the data type of the column in the SSAS model is Auto (Date)

• HTML email image inverts on link click Outlook 07/10/13

  I'm having an issue on a HTML email in Word rendered Outlooks (2007, 2010, 2013) where I click an image link, and when the mouse is clicked, the image inverts... I have tried putting a text-decoration: none on the link. All the links are styled inline as well. This is the only image that it is having this issue on the email, so tried re-saving the image with no luck. The image is saved as a JPEG and SRGB from a Photoshop PSD. Any ideas? Thanks.

I was also the first person outside of Microsoft to try this offering out. This gave me the opportunity to test real world application at various clients using the Microsoft Load Test Service and provide real world feedback to the Microsoft product team. One of the most recent systems I tested using the Load Test Service has been an insurance quote generation engine. This insurance quote generation engine is,   hosted in Windows Azure expected to get quote requests from across the globe expected to handle 5 Million quote requests in a day (not clear how this load will be distributed across the day) There was no way, I could simulate such kind of load from on premise without standing up additional hardware. But Microsoft’s Cloud based Load Test service allowed me to test my key performance testing scenarios, i.e. Simulate expected Load, Endurance Testing, Threshold Testing and Testing for Latency. Simulating expected load: approach to devising a load pattern My approach to devising a load test pattern has been to run the test scenario with 1 user to figure out the response time. Then work out how many users are required to reach the target load. So, for example, to invoke 1 quote from the quote engine software takes 0.5 seconds. Now if you do the math,   1 quote request by 1 user = 0.5 seconds   quotes generated by 1 user in 24 hour = 1 * (((2 * 60) * 60) * 24) = 172,800   quotes generated by 30 users in 24 hours = 172,800 * 30 =  5,184,000 This was a very simple example, if your application requires more concurrent users to test scenario’s such as caching, etc then you can devise your own load pattern, some examples of load test patterns can be found here.  Endurance Testing To test for endurance, I loaded the quote generation engine with an expected fixed user load and ran the test for very long duration such as over 48 hours and observed the affect of the long running test on the Azure infrastructure. Currently Microsoft Load Test service does not support metrics from the machine under test. I used Azure diagnostics to begin with, but later started using Cerebrata Azure Diagnostics Manager to capture the metrics of the machine under test. Threshold Testing To figure out how much user load the application could cope with before falling on its belly, I opted to step load the quote generation engine by incrementing user load with different variations of incremental user load per minute till the application crashed out and forced an IIS reset. Testing for Latency Currently the Microsoft Load Test service does not support generating geographically distributed load, I however, deployed the insurance quote generation engine in different Azure data centres and ran the same set of performance tests to measure for latency. Because I could compare load test results from different runs by exporting the results to excel (this feature is provided out of the box right from Visual Studio 2010) I could see the different in response times.
