  I work a lecturer and when I go home I find a lot of free time. The problem is that I spend most of my time in learning about web development. I don't go outside and don't meet people, I'm only in front of the screen drinking 4 cups of coffee (per day) and trying to learn many technologies related to web development. In the last, I don't learn things very well because I'm in a hurry. I know this place is for asking about programming but I want to learn from your experience regarding learning. How do you learn? How many hours do you spend in leaning a day? How can I organize my time so I can learn well and easily?

• Cost of Web Server that hosted and delivered text only

  We are developing an application that needs a web server to interact with the two (or more) entities involved. They will not ever see anything on the web, but the server is required for the transfer of data between them. It's sort of a holding point. Now, the only thing the server is going to be holding is textual data. The two entities are going to be doing the work with the data. I was wondering what the cost of this type of server would be. Since it would be JUST a database with no front end, would it make sense to employ a service through Amazon or Google that just holds data for me to access instead of buying a server and making my own database? The amount of data can grow very large however it's only text, and all data over a day old will be deleted for the most part every day. Thanks!

• Trust External Surround Soundcard SC-5500p not working

  I got the following external sound card to make some awesome noise with my speaker set. It should be plug and play, but it so happens that when I plug it in and hook everything up, there's no sound at all. The speaker set I have works if I plug it in the laptop directly (or rather, if I plug the front speakers cable as I can't plug anything else). http://www.trust.com/products/product.aspx?artnr=14134 Would anyone know how I can workaround this problem and make full use of this external sound card on my Ubuntu 12.04 system?

• Steps to manage a large project [closed]

  Software development is an area where parallel development to its fullest form is very difficult to achieve, although you could get reasonably close with the right design. This is especially true for game development. That being said, if you are designing a game from scratch from engine to front end, what steps should be taken in order? How would you efficiently manage your project and your team? I'm asking because several people and I are interested in working on a relatively large project for learning purposes. Initially, we were going to use a proprietary engine like Unity, but since we wanted to learn how the engine works, we're going to start from bottom. I'd appreciate any suggestions that you guys can provide me.

• Increase Servers folder depth limit for running scripts?

  I have a CMS on my site that utilises TinyMCE (the WYSIWYG text editor). The issue is that TinyMCE cannot browse for files (example: images) on the web server. I get the error: Error 324 (net::ERR_EMPTY_RESPONSE): The server closed the connection without sending any data. I have been told this may be occurring because the server is configured to limit the folder depth for running scripts. Unfortunately I am primarily a front end developer so I am not really sure how to go about changing/viewing this. I have access to WHM and cPanel. Does anyone know how to adjust this?

However, with a free camera, most of the time it is going to be looking at such portals at an angle: Now a regular near clipping plane will not always work here, it will either intersect with the wall the portal is sitting on, or possibly with objects in front of the wall. The desired near clipping plane would be aligned like the portal, producing a view volume more like this: or this in 3D: So here is my question: How does one construct or "truncate" a view/projection matrix to achieve such an off-camera-normal (near) clipping plane?

• SEO: Is promoting your backlinks a good strategy for improving search results for my site's name?

  I run a website that's been around for about three years in the sports space. I am successfully ranking well for targeted keywords, but searching for the name of my site itself returns very poor results - it shows my site, its FB/Twitter, and then 15 pages of unrelated spam that happen to contain two words that, when combined, form my website's name. After that, my backlinks begin to show up spordically. As far as I can tell, I simply don't have enough backlinks and the backlinks I do have are ranked worse than the spam. (Site Explorer lists 200 external links to any page on our domain and 20 external links directly to the front page). To counter this, my strategy is to promote my backlinks so they get a better page rank than the spam. Does that make sense? Am I going in the right direction or should I just focus on getting more backlinks pointing directly to my site? • Learning the nuances of a language (C++)

  So I'm a recent college graduate, and I really enjoy working in C++; I worked with it a lot in school, and would like to pursue a career writing in C or C++. The problem I'm having is that I'm trying to learn the nuances of C++. I'm not talking about the basics, or even advanced concepts like templates, namespaces, etc...I'm talking about the real nitty-gritty stuff like undefined behavior and stuff like that. When I'm interviewing, and they put a bizarre piece of C++ code in front of me, and ask me what the output will be, I want to be able to nail those questions. Obviously experience is a great way to learn, but when I write code for practice, I [obviously] know what it does. Reading open-source projects have been good practice, but I find that there tends to be an enormous learning curve just understanding the organization of the code (because the projects tend to be large). So basically what I'm asking is, what should I do now? Any tips are greatly appreciated!

Now multiple documents can be opened at the same time, either from "File | Open File" or from the File Browser (i.e., the rebranded Favorites window). Multiple tabs are available at the same time, each representing a different open document. Click a different tab and its document is activated and brought to the front of the application. That means multiple LibreOffice applications can be used simultaneously, each could be undocked from the frame of the application, and the user can work with multiple documents, from multiple LibreOffice applications, all at the same time. • Top Down bounds of vision

  Obviously in a first person view point the player sees only what's in front of them (with the exception of radars and rearview mirrors, etc). My game has a top down perspective, but I still want to limit what the character sees based on their facing. I've already worked out having objects obstruct vision, but there are two other factors that I worry would be disorienting and want to do right. I want the player to have reduced peripheral vision and very little view behind them. The assumption is he can turn his head and so see fairly well out to the sides, but hardly at all behind without turning the whole body. How do I make it clear you are not seeing behind you? I want the map to turn so the player is always facing up. Part of the game is to experience kind of a maze and the player should be able to lose track of North. How can I turn the map rather than the player avatar without causing confusion?

• Is there a downside of running too many Symfony applications for 1 website?

  Recently I got access to a Symfony 1.2 project which is for just 1 website, but with too many applications. In the past, I have developed websites but with not more than 2 or 3 applications. The cross-application links are achieved by passing the full URL to the 'href' attribute. Since the site is still working absolutely fine, my question is will having too many front controllers (approximately 25-30) hamper the performance of the website? Should I just try to create Cross Application Links or put an additional effort in combining similar applications (I guess almost all of the site's frontend part) into 1 application but different modules ?

• Can I run alsa and pulse side by side ? I think there is some problem with the alsa ! My ubunu login sound and alert sound are not working?

  I think I have Alsa driver installed. Pulse not working may be I dont have it installed. Not sure If I can run Pulse and Alsa. I had to configure each application prior to work which use pulse.(SMplayer by default select pulse. I had to change that) I know a little about these. So if the question is stupid then please help me. Smplayer always showing a cross(x) icon in front of speaker icon as it is disabled, though Im playing sound.

• Still no wireless after b43 with Dell Inspiron 1525 (Ubuntu 12.04)

  So I followed the instructions here http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1974006 about how to solve this issue. It worked for a bit and then stopped. After doing a modprobe I could at least see my network and click on it but it would not connect (I can always see it if I look under the listed wireless networks under VPN Connections, however). I'm thinking, from what I read at least, the issue might be that my wireless switch was on during those first steps. Do I now have to undo the b43 install and do it again? Or is there something else I could try? I just made the switch to Linux yesterday, so I am hesitant at this point to mess with anything on my own. I should note now that it was installed by someone who knows what they are doing, so we are all good on that front.

  One of the problems web apps have against native apps, especially on the mobile front, is the constant need to re-download each web page on request. Ultimately, this leads to slower performance. Why if web apps only download new pages if they're actually needed, not because they're simply requested. For example: perhaps the server can store a web page version in a cookie. Every slight change to the page on the server-side changes the version number. Now instead of the browser requesting a new page each time, why not just check the version number and have the server send the page if they're different? If the page similar, the user can just use a cached page. I'm sure browsers doesn't necessarily have to change to accommodate changes to this, correct?

• Looking for parallel programming problem

  I am trying to come up with a problem that is easily solvable in a parallel manner and that requires communication between threads for a test. I also am trying to avoid problems that require require random waits, which rules out dining philosophers and producer-consumer (bounded buffer), two of the classics. My goal is for the student to be able to write the program in less than 20-30 minutes in front of a computer not knowing of the problem beforehand. (This is to prevent preparation more than to come up with something novel.) I am trying to stress the communication aspect of the program, though the multi-threaded nature is also important. Does anyone have some ideas? Edit: I'm using Google Go for the language and testing comprehension of the goroutines/channels combo vs an actors library that I authored.

• Retrieve the coordinates of the *occluding* (closest/drawn) pixels during 3D overlap, using OpenGL?

  Hi, Sorry if the question is not worded well, I'm a new to both 3D and OpenGL. How could I go about obtaining the 3D coordinates of the occluding object, at the point where occlusion is happening (i.e. the 'intersection' of the object in front/closest to the screen)? Just to offer a [very] rudimentary, visual, example, if you were to form an index-finger cross, with your right hand closest to your face, I'd like to know the coordinates of the part of your right finger which obscures the other finger (obviously back within the OpenGL context - no jokers ;-) ). If there is a way to find out both about the occluder (hider) and the occluded (hidden) objects in OpenGL, then that would be of great use, also. Cheers Rich

• What's the best route to getting started in moble app development?

• Usb/vga not recognized anymore

  I don't know what happened, but yesterday everything worked fine, but when I woke up this morning and booted my computer to Ubuntu 14.04 a bunch of hardware isn't recognized anymore. I use a dual monitor setup with dvi-d and vga, but the vga screen isn't recognized anymore and the dvi-d monitor is recognized as "Built-in Display" while I'm not on a laptop. Also every device connected through usb isn't recognized anymore either. I have a keyboard with the blue round connector, which still works, so I can still log in though. The computer goes slower than usual and I have no idea what has happened. Can anybody point me in the direction I should start looking, because this is scary! I just checked and both the front and back sound connectors stopped working also :/ Edit: The devices connected through USB are recognized as they all show up using sudo lsusb, Ubuntu just doesn't let me use them anymore.

• Tracking a single page on another domain in Google Analytics

  I have access to edit a 'mini-site' hosted on our organisation's parent site. I'd like to track this page using Google Analytics, however I don't have access to the front page so I can't verify this as my domain. Using the tracking code for our main site works, however I don't want this data to be confused with similarly named pages on our site (for example, our mini-site is at /radio, and if we had a /radio at our main site this would be counted as the same). Has anyone been in this situation before? I'd like to just redirect visitors to our mini-site to our main site, seeing as it ranks higher in Google, but I've been told to maintain a separate site with our main features.

• How to morph from a programmer noob to a guru?

  I have been a programmer for two years, and i am getting hard to level up my skill especially working at legacy code maintenance right now. I think working hard is not enough to elevate my skill, because there are ton of opensource around us, the preoject i have been involved are all mixture of opensources --- from front end to back end from presentation tier to business logic tier. My work is just gluing all these together or something fewer complex which is to collect data from UI to logic module then retrieve the data processed and put it to UI. Sometime there is a need to add some simple logic(like assembling the data to a form that fit business logic interface) while transport data. • Bad sound quality and headphones not working

  Using Ubuntu 10.10, on a HP Pavilion t3019.es, which has a Realtek ALC880 soundcard. It has 6 rear jack outputs, plus digital audio input and output, plus 3 front jacks (mic, headphones and a blue one which i don't know what's for). The sound on my computer is very low, and when i raise the volume up to 50%, it starts sounding distorted, crackling. Also, the headphones don't work when i plug them (it just keeps on playing through the speakers). I tried to comment the "/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf" file according to the soundcard and jacks in my computer, but none of the lines added worked (naturally, didn't added them at once). I found out that adding "options snd-hda-intel model=generic" to it made the sound better, but it's not as good as in Windows yet. Any ideas? Other than setting the PCM value, didn't work for me. • No sound with a Creative Labs Soundblaster live EMU10K1X

  I just installed ubuntu. things seems great but I have no sound. When I go to the settings menu I chose from various setup. I found one that work which had 4 speakers a subwofer and a front speaker. When I test it the sound works fine. However, when I try playing an *.mp3 file or try to watch a video on you tube I get no sound at all. I have a dual boot with windows XP and there is no problem in windows at all. Below is my setup. OS: ubuntu 11.10 machine: dell dimension 8300 speakers: dell creative lab sounblaster live EMU10K1X video: ATI RADEON R350 [Radeon 9800 Pro] secondary Following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingSoundProblems did not help.
