• Squeezebox server on Mac OS 10.6

  I want to run Squeezebox server on my Mac running OS 10.6 Snow Leopard. The Firewall settings on 10.6 now let you speciy by Application things that are allowed to connect through the firewall. But Squeezebox server isn't an application, so I can't select it. If I turn the firewall off, it works fine. This is a reasonable step for a desktop (as it's always connecting to the 'net through the router's firewall) but on a laptop that connects via public WiFi it doesn't seem like a good idea. Help!

• Verifying Time Machine backups

  I'm preparing my system for a Snow Leopard upgrade, and I prepare for the worst case scenario: full reinstall and restore. I would like to verify that my Time Machine backups are valid, and will restore correctly. My Time Machine backups go to a Linux server running Netatalk, and the backups complete successfully. How do I do a test restore to an alternative location, or otherwise verify my data without overwriting any existing files? Do I need to save anything in particular externally to make sure I can access the backups if I have to reinstall from scratch?

• Dropbox context menu missing in OS X

  Problem My Dropbox context menu is missing in OS X Snow Leopard (10.6.8). While the Dropbox service runs normally, Finder doesn't show the icons and also doesn't give me the ability to browse files on the website or copy the public link. What I've tried Removed ~/.dropbox and ~/Dropbox/.dropbox.cache Reinstalled Dropbox.app (both 1.4.7 stable and 1.5.0 experimental), went through the setup again Restarted Finder Logged out and back in All of these I've done over and over again, in random permutations. I've made sure that Dropbox appears in the Login Items under my Account (and I've never touched that) I don't know if ~/Library/Contextual Menu Items is missing the Dropbox plugin or if there shouldn't be one after all. In any case, I can't get the icons or the menu to appear.

• trouble loggin into a Mac share from a Windows PC on the network

  I have this mixed network and usually log into the Macs from the Windows XP home machines and vice versa. I have no real networking knowledge, things just seem to work, more or less, with the default settings. Now I've got a new Snow Leopard Mac with a shared folder (added the user names of the Windows users at the sharing preferences) and the trouble is some machines can open the share and others can't. I can't see the difference. It feels like some Windows machines have a "cache" and won't ask for the share password, just deny access. I can also see old shares proposed at the Windows "add network place wizard".

• Disable OS X Portable Home Directories for specific hosts for all users, not just individuals?

  Would it be possible to block any and all Portable Home Directory services for specific hosts? Something like MCX's "MobileAccountNeverAsk-" but for the whole workstation? We have a network with both portable and stationary machines. I'd like our users to be able to use all machines, going portable on the MacBook but not being bothering with syncing when logged into stationary iMacs or Mac Pros. The Open Directory servers are running Snow Leopard (for now) and all clients are running Lion. Thanks! Paul

• Determine $DISPLAY socket name on OS X 10.6?

  I'm looking to do something that's a little odd. I'm SSH'ing from a server to a Snow Leopard client to start an X11 data display process. In other words, SSH's X11 forwarding isn't what I want. I can do: client$ echo $DISPLAY /tmp/launch-SOMETHING/org.x:0 client$ ls -l $DISPLAY srwx------ 1 myuser wheel 0 Dec 9 15:47 /tmp/launch-SOMETHING/org.x:0 And, when I do: server$ ssh myuser@client client$ export DISPLAY=/tmp/launch-SOMETHING/org.x:0 client$ xterm I happily get my xterm. What I need, then, is some way to find out the correct value for $DISPLAY in my ssh session. From what I've read, $DISPLAY is set by launchd, but I haven't found any way to see that value. If it matters, I know that when my process connects from $server to $client, $client will logged in to the terminal as the same user.

• MacBook repeatedly disconnects from WiFi

  I have an early 2008-model MacBook (2.4GHz). The WiFi router I have at home is a Linksys WRT54GX2 that I have had for a few years. My MacBook has recently started disconnecting from the router every few minutes, which is rather annoying. I can reconnect again without having to restart the router or anything, as it seems that the MacBook is just dropping the connection. I have tried changing the channel on the router, and upgrading the laptop from Leopard to Snow Leopard made no difference either. I'm only about six feet from the linksys device, so distance isn't an issue. This only happens with the Linksys router, while I can use the local library's open network without issue. The problem also seemingly becomes more pronounced after midnight. Any ideas as to what the problem could be?

• Video/films organizing software for mac

  I am looking for application that will help me organize movies, clips and other videos I have. I tell it a folder to watch, and then I can mark every video there as watched/unwatched, set rating, add description, tag it. And possibility to open with preferred video player (for me — VLC). Option to get all info from imdb or other source will be very good. yFlicks would be a good one, but it uses quicktime, so it doesn't like any non standard codec and container (for example mkv), it doesn't work well on Snow Leopard. Any suggestions?

  I can't update or downgrade my iPhone 3GS, Firmware 4.3.5 tethered with redsn0w. Whenever I try to update it, I get a "device isn't eligible" error. I researched on how to do that, like changing host files, but none of them worked for me.   On a Snow Leopard machine, at the Terminal: la ~/src/rmcl/ | grep RMCL -rw-r--r--@ 1 claytonstanley staff 6766167 Nov 13 2009 RMCL What is that '@' attribute? This file is part of an older OS X program that runs under Rosetta. I'm having issues where some older programs running under Rosetta require the @ attribute when opening files. But I'm not sure what that attribute is, so I have no way to know how to add/remove it. I did try a thorough Google search on this, but I wasn't able to find the answer. I would have thought this would be an easy one to find. Maybe the Google query isn't acting properly because of the single @ special character. Any info. is much appreciated. Thanks!

• Active Directory password update not recognized on OS X 10.7.3?

  We have a few Macs in our office which are bound to our Active Directory (Server 2k8R2) domain for login authentication and access to file shares. For the most part this has worked without trouble. I recently changed my AD password (from the Windows box that is my main desktop machine), and my iMac still wants my old password for logins—even after a reboot. It correctly prompts for the new password when I attempt to connect to Windows smb file shares. The last time I changed my password, the iMac was running Snow Leopard and picked up the password change as expected. I'm a little bit of an OS X n00b, so I apologize if this should be obvious. My searching has turned up numerous issues people have had with Lion and Active Directory, but not this particular problem. Possibly related, we do have mobile accounts enabled for AD in the Directory Utility options. I assume this causes credentials to be cached locally, but it's not clear to me how to get them to update.

  so i am getting this error when trying to connect to my mysql server. i have reinstalled MYSQL and php several times and tried a slew of command line work from info around the web.mysql is running and i know that my mysql.sock exists and is located in ~/private/tmp/ and also in ~/tmp/. i also have plenty of hard drive space. i have installed and setup phpmyadmin correctly only adding a password to 'Password for config auth'. AND i have connected to the server via Sequel Pro. so my question is what the heck is going on that i can't connect to the server via phpmyadmin? any guesses? also i'm on a 64-bit intel mac running snow leopard

  i have mac osx 10.6.3 (snow leopard) i have already setup mamp so it acts like a local server. but the next thing i wanna try doing is making it into a mail server where i can register an email locally maybe something like myname@myip or however its done. then having the ability to setup mx records, cname, and all that dns good stuff. this will only be for education purposes so that i can fully understand how it all works. what do i need to do? i read something about MailServeSnow but i cant get its domain to work , it must be down. would this be the best option? also would i need mac server or my os would be just fine? thanks

• How do I use XQuartz with ssh on OS X?

  I've downloaded the latest stable version of XQuartz on my Snow Leopard machine, and I'm trying to make an ssh connection with X forwarding but X11 keeps opening. How can I get OS X to use XQuartz? I had X11 installed I downloaded and installed XQuartz X11 is not open / running XQuartz is open and running I try and connect to a remote system using iTerm2: ssh user@remote -X X11 opens. XQuartz is still open, but I doubt it is doing anything. I also tried moving X11 to the trash but then the ssh connection will not complete, even though XQuartz is open. I also get the two warnings which I don't understand how to fix, even after reading the ssh man page. Warning: untrusted X11 forwarding setup failed: xauth key data not generated Warning: No xauth data; using fake authentication data for X11 forwarding.

• XAMPP won't start Apache on Mac OS

  When I try starting Apache from the XAMPP control panel (Mac OSX Snow Leopard), I get the following error popup and Apache won't start: /Applications/XAMPP/xamppfiles/bin/apachectl: line 70: ulimit: open files: cannot modify limit: Invalid argument (48)Address already in use: make_sock: could not bind to address [::]:80 XAMPP was running perfectly 10 minutes earlier. I stopped Apache to add some .conf files and it failed on restart. I removed all the new .conf files (i.e. reverted it to how it was before) but now I get the above message. EDIT: I've checked AppMonitor and I see the "httpd" processes (one by _www nested within root). Just tried quitting these but they're auto-restarted on new process IDs and it didn't solve the problem.

  Have a MacPro (snow leopard) connected to an (windows standard) Asus 25" monitor via a DVI--VGA adapter. Now the boss wants me to work from home, so I want to share my Asus display with a Windows XP laptop. No doubt once my wife sees this, she will want to do the same thing, but with a Windows 7 laptop. So what I would like, I think, is your recommendations for a KVM switch (or better solution) that allows the Mac and a (windows 7 or windows xp) laptop to share the Asus display. Bonus marks if they can share Apple keyboard and magic mouse, but am quite happy to use separate mouse keyboards. The MacPro is the one that is always connected, the laptops come and go. Any ideas?   I compiled GCC 4.4.3 and installed it in /usr/local/bin, but whenever I install a port via MacPorts 1.8.2 the verbose output says MacPorts is using /usr/bin/gcc-4.2: checking for gcc... /usr/bin/gcc-4.2 How do I make MacPorts find my own GCC 4.4.3?   Hi, I work in IT at a school and we recently updated our database software, however the web access that the teachers use to do registration does not work too well with Internet Explorer 7 and we're thinking about switching to chrome (mostly due to me hating IE in general) but the problem we have is that users are unable to migrate their bookmarks over from IE due to account restrictions, is there any way to get this working? A bit of info about the system if it could be helpful; Almost all the client PCs are running Win XP SP2. My colleagues machines are running Windows 7, I use OS X Snow Leopard and most of out servers are running windows server 2003 (with the exception of 2 one on 2000 server and another on 2008 R2).   I recently got my laptop stolen with some sensitive informations on it (personal source code, bank details in a secure file, passwords, etc) and I learnt the lesson: encrypt your sensitive data. Now, I am wondering what are the options to encrypt a partition (not an encrypt disk image) ? Aim: The aim is to prevent anyone (except me) to access those data. Requirement 0: The software must be able to encrypt non system partition. Requirement 1: Plausible deniability is required but preventing cold boot attack is however not an absolute requirement (I am not famous enough or have sensitive enough info to have this kind of requirement). Requirement 2 : Software taking advantage of AES hardware encryption are very welcome as I intent to get a Macbook Pro with i7 CPU (with AES-NI enabled instructions). I will have avirtual machine running in the encrypted partition. Requirement 3 : Free or reasonably cheap. Requirement 4 : Software must run on Mac OS X Snow Leopard or Lion. • Blacklist a single access point of a wireless network

  At my university, one of the wireless access points is failing. When something tries to associate to the network using that access point, it deassociates the client, claiming 802.1X authentication failure. Other access points do work normally using the same credentials. The issue has been reported, but after a month it still has still not been fixed. Now, I'm looking for a way to blacklist the access point's BSSID, so the OS prefers other access points on the same SSID. How can I blacklist specific BSSIDs in either Mac OS X Snow Leopard or Windows 7?

• Missing time zones in OSX and Windows

  I am working on a javascript to automatically detect a user's timezone (https://bitbucket.org/pellepim/jstimezonedetect/). But there are two timezones that I have a really hard time to test, since I can not set my system to observe these timezones. The timezones I am talking about are UTC+1245 (Chatham Islands, NZ) and UTC+0845 (Australia/Eucla). As far as I can tell in OSX (Snow Leopard) and in Windows 7 these timezones do not exist as a setting. Granted, very few people live in these areas, and it might just not be worth it. Does anyone know of a way to set these timezones on a system level? In any operating system? If it is not possible in a trivial way, what do people who live in these areas do to get their systems working as they would like?

  We're thinking of migrating our Mac users away from Entourage 2008 and instead using Mail.app (built into OS X Snow Leopard). We're running SBS 2003 so it's Exchange 2003 for now. When I setup an "Exchange IMAP" Mail account for a user, their Inbox shows up as empty. However, all of their other folders appear to be populated with their existing email correctly. New email shows up correctly in their Inbox. What do you have to do to see all of the old messages already in the Inbox? Thank you.

• Running VMWare EXS(i) on Apple Xserve

  So we're running VMWare Esx(i) (I'm not completely sure which as I'm out of the office) running on Windows Server 2008. However it turns out the machine we're running it on has serious hardware limitations, most importantly it's restricted to 4gb of ram. We've since inherited a much more powerful server. The problem being the new server is an Apple Xserver running, I believe, Snow Leopard Server. My question is, can I run VMWare Exs(i) on Xserver, or an equivalent? I'm done some hardcore Googling and the best that I can find is that it's not supported, but it might work, but there are no guarantees (this has been stated many times on the VMWare forums by the VMWare support staff). But all these search results are years old, so I can't find any recent answers regarding this. Has anyone accomplished this?
