Where is the SQL Azure Development Environment

Recently I posted an entry explaining that you can develop in Windows Azure without having to connect to the main service on the Internet, using the Software Development Kit (SDK) which installs two emulators - one for compute and the other for storage. That brought up the question of the same kind of thing for SQL Azure. The short answer is that there isn’t one. While we’ll make the development experience for all versions of SQL Server, including SQL Azure more easy to write against, you can simply treat it as another edition of SQL Server. For instance, many of us use the SQL Server Developer Edition - which in versions up to 2008 is actually the Enterprise Edition - to develop our code. We might write that code against all kinds of environments, from SQL Express through Enterprise Edition. We know which features work on a certain edition, what T-SQL it supports and so on, and develop accordingly. We then test on the actual platform to ensure the code runs as expected. You can simply fold SQL Azure into that same development process. When you’re ready to deploy, if you’re using SQL Server Management Studio 2008 R2 or higher, you can script out the database when you’re done as a SQL Azure script (with change notifications where needed) by selecting the right “Engine Type” on the scripting panel: (Thanks to David Robinson for pointing this out and my co-worker Rick Shahid for the screen-shot - saved me firing up a VM this morning!) Will all this change? Will SSMS, “Data Dude” and other tools change to include SQL Azure? Well, I don’t have a specific roadmap for those tools, but we’re making big investments on Windows Azure and SQL Azure, so I can say that as time goes on, it will get easier. For now, make sure you know what features are and are not included in SQL Azure, and what T-SQL is supported. cannot connect to sql server express from sql server standard

... like my title says... I cannot connect to my instance on sql server express from sql server standard... I have tried disabling firing wall and checked sqlbrowser is started but for some reason I cannnot connect to my datbase... called server_name\sqlexpress.. I have a virtual machine and a full scale MS SQL Server 2008 R2 running on it... and I have several other vm running sqlexpress. they run fine and I can connect to them using sqlexpress... but when i try to access from sqlserver... I get this error. A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified) (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: -1) Digging deep into the error, I found this Error Number: -1 Severity: 20 State: 0 and finally this... Windows Server 2012 Migration (DNS/AD DS Standard Eval to Essentials OEM) P2V -> Do I need a Secondary Domain Controller during migration?

This is my first post on this exchange (although not my first on stack exchange), so please have patience. I am a 3rd year student intern, and I have been tasked with virtualizing the server systems at the company I work for. I have come a long way, and I am almost ready to install the VM Server in migration mode. Here is some information: Source Server: Windows Server 2012 Standard Evaluation DNS Server (local only) Advanced Directory Domain Services File and Storage stuff A few other server roles Destination Server: Windows Server 2012 Essentials OEM (Hyper-V client) Running under a temporary Hyper-V host (will migrate the Hyper-V host back to the old machine after the original server is virtualized as a client). Sitting currently at the "Select Installation Mode" screen. I have been following the guides on Microsoft tech net, and today I spent most of the day getting rid of issues in the Best Practices Analyser on the source machine. I have 3 remaining issues (which are all related): ERROR: DNS: DNS servers on Ethernet (adapter name) should include the loopback address, but not as the first entry (flavour text indicates that, during migration, the DNS server may not be found) WARNING: All domains should have at least two domain controllers for redundancy. WARNING: DNS: Ethernet should be configured to use both a preferred and an alternate DNS Server. All of these issues can be resolved by deploying a secondary domain controller, but I have never done that before (see my concerns below). The main issue here that I am concerned with for installing in migration mode is the FIRST one (the error). If I try and set-up the new server deployment, and the adapter domain controller is listed as localhost, then this may cause the installation to fail. (at least, this is what the Microsoft documentation suggests). But I do not have another IP address to enter here as I have no other local domain controllers. So I did the first obvious thing that came to my mind, and tried to use Google DNS servers as my alternates. That did not work because they couldn't recognize other computers in the "forest". Now I'm no expert when it comes to DNS, so please forgive my ignorance. This DNS server is concerned only with Active Directory stuffs for the local network. If I go ahead with migration, and it fails, then I will just have to go ahead and install a secondary DNS server I suppose. The problem I have here is that I am limited by the amount of Windows Server keys I have available (I have 2); however, I do have access to a Linux box running Debian Wheezy that I set-up two weeks ago as a Mantis server. I could install Windows Server 2012 as a secondary DNS (I think) in a VM and use that, but then it seems like I will be wasting time, and probably the Windows key too, and if there's another way to do it with Linux that would be much better. Even better still, do I even need a secondary DNS server for migration at all? The hints said that during migration the original machine "might" not be found. ClearTrace for SQL Server 2012

I’ve updated the beta for ClearTrace that support SQL Server 2012. This requires SQL Server 2012 to be installed on the computer where ClearTrace is running. It will read traces from SQL Server 2008 R2, SQL Server 2008 and SQL Server 2005. It includes some minor improvements in performance and handling large SQL statements. It should also give better errors. If you do find any of those errors, please report them in the support forum.

Working With Extended Events

SQL Server 2012 has made working with Extended Events (XE) pretty simple when it comes to what sessions you have on your servers and what options you have selected and so forth but if you are like me then you still have some SQL Server instances that are 2008 or 2008 R2. For those servers there is no built-in way to view the Extended Event sessions in SSMS. I keep coming up against the same situations – Where are the xel log files? What events, actions or predicates are set for the events on the server? What sessions are there on the server already? I got tired of this being a perpetual question and wrote some TSQL to save as a snippet in SQL Prompt so that these details are permanently only a couple of clicks away. First, some history. If you just came here for the code skip down a few paragraphs and it’s all there. If you want a little time to reminisce about SQL Server then stick with me through the next paragraph or two. We are in a bit of a cross-over period currently, there are many versions of SQL Server but I would guess that SQL Server 2008, 2008 R2 and 2012 comprise the majority of installations. With each of these comes a set of management tools, of which SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) is one. In 2008 and 2008 R2 Extended Events made their first appearance and there was no way to work with them in the SSMS interface. At some point the Extended Events guru Jonathan Kehayias (http://www.sqlskills.com/blogs/jonathan/) created the SQL Server 2008 Extended Events SSMS Addin which is really an excellent tool to ease XE session administration. This addin will install in SSMS 2008 or 2008R2 but not SSMS 2012. If you use a compatible version of SSMS then I wholly recommend downloading and using it to make your work with XE much easier. If you have SSMS 2012 installed, and there is no reason not to as it will let you work with all versions of SQL Server, then you cannot install this addin. If you are working with SQL Server 2012 then SSMS 2012 has built in functionality to manage XE sessions – this functionality does not apply for 2008 or 2008 R2 instances though. This means you are somewhat restricted and have to use TSQL to manage XE sessions on older versions of SQL Server. OK, those of you that skipped ahead for the code, you need to start from here: So, you are working with SSMS 2012 but have a SQL Server that is an earlier version that needs an XE session created or you think there is a session created but you aren’t sure, or you know it’s there but can’t remember if it is running and where the output is going. How do you find out? Well, none of the information is hidden as such but it is a bit of a wrangle to locate it and it isn’t a lot of code that is unlikely to remain in your memory. I have created two pieces of code. The first examines the SYS.Server_Event_… management views in combination with the SYS.DM_XE_… management views to give the name of all sessions that exist on the server, regardless of whether they are running or not and two pieces of TSQL code. One piece will alter the state of the session: if the session is running then the code will stop the session if executed and vice versa. The other piece of code will drop the selected session. If the session is running then the code will stop it first. Do not execute the DROP code unless you are sure you have the Create code to hand. Dynamic SQL to generate column names?

I have a query where I'm trying pivot row values into column names and currently I'm using SUM(Case...) As 'ColumnName' statements, like so: SELECT SKU1, SUM(Case When Sku2=157 Then Quantity Else 0 End) As '157', SUM(Case When Sku2=158 Then Quantity Else 0 End) As '158', SUM(Case When Sku2=167 Then Quantity Else 0 End) As '167' FROM OrderDetailDeliveryReview Group By OrderShipToID, DeliveryDate, SKU1 The above query works great and gives me exactly what I need. However, I'm writing out the SUM(Case... statements by hand based on the results of the following query: Select Distinct Sku2 From OrderDetailDeliveryReview Is there a way, using T-SQL inside a stored procedure, that I can dynamically generate the SUM(Case... statements from the Select Distinct Sku2 From OrderDetailDeliveryReview query and then execute the resulting SQL code?

Get data types from arbitrary sql statement in SQL Server 2008

Given some arbitrary SQL I would like to get the data types of the returned columns. The statement might join many tables, views, TVFs, etc. I know I could create a view based on the query and get the datatypes from that, hoping there's a quicker way. Only think I've been able to think of is writing a .net utility to run the SQL and examine the results, wondering if there is a TSQL answer. i.e. Given (not real tables just an example) SELECT p.Name AS PersonName, p.Age, a.Account as AccountName FROM Person as p LEFT JOIN Account as a ON p.Id = a.OwnerId I would like to have something like PersonName: (nvarchar(255), not null) Age: (smallInt, not null) etc...

Windows 2012/IIS 8 + ASP.NET MVC Applicaiton 403.14 (Forbidden) - The Web server is configured to not list the contents

I have a very simple MVC 4 application I'm trying to deploy to a Windows 2012 server. Inconsistently, when navigating to the root of the web application (http://localhost/app), it returns a 403.14-Forbidden: Detailed Error Information: Module: DirectoryListingModule Notification: ExecuteRequestHandler Handler: StaticFile Error Code: 0x00000000 Requested URL: http://localhost:80/test1/ Physical Path: c:\apps\test1\ Logon Method: Negotiate The web application is: Is a very vanilla VS2012 MVC4 Intranet template -- with only a tweak to a label to prove things were working. runs in an Integrated v4.0 application pool setup to use Windows authentication application pool has a custom AD Identity assigned (so it can gain access to a SQL server) application pool identity has read permissions in the c:\apps\test1 folder in which it is running It's an MVC4 application, targeting .NET 4.0 currently -There's no default document in an MVC4 application (like a default.aspx), as there shouldn't need to be one. I don't want to enable directory listings (as that's not the real error). Installed: Roles / Web Server (IIS) / Appliation Development / (.NET 4.5 Extensibility, Application Initialization, ASP.NET 4.5, ISAP Extensions, ISAPI Filters, WebSocket Protocol) Works locally on my machine in IISExpress on Windows 8 Has configured in web.config: <modules runAllManagedModulesForAllRequests="true" /> is set to precompiled during publish When I change the precompiled option to false, the web application does not fail (in my testing at least, it seems to work consistently). The reason I say it's inconsistent is that I've seen it work, then I've published, and the error returns. I can't find a pattern to the issue (and right now, I haven't been able to get it work again, at all). The 403 is returned from a local or remote web browser. I've had trouble finding a solution that isn't intended for older versions of Windows (like suggestions to reinstall ASP.NET which won't work on Windows 2012). I really don't know what else to try.

PXE with WDS & Windows Server 2012 - no filename option in DHCP lease?

I'm trying to configure Windows Server 2012 (a virtual box VM) with WDS so I can PXE boot some Windows 7 VMs (also virtual box). All the machines involved are only attached to the "host only network", 192.168.56.0/24. The Server 2012 machine has been setup as an AD DS machine, has DNS installed and working along with DHCP with option 60 - PXEClient - set and WDS is set to not listen on DHCP ports. I've followed http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj648426.aspx very closely. I've used the boot.wim and install.wim files from the Win 7 installation DVD and they're configured as 'boot' and 'installation' images respectively. When I boot the target machine, it gets an IP address, but I simply get 'no filename' and the boot won't proceed any further. I've tried setting option 66 to 192.168.56.2 (the WDS server) and option 67 to both Boot\x64\wdsnbp.com and Boot\x64\pxeboot.n12 but all to no avail. I can't seem to see anything in the event log, either. Can anyone out there spot what I'm doing wrong? Or give tips to narrow down a diagnostic?

ConfigMgr 2012 - How to automatically make updates available to computers without forcing them to be installed?

I'm using System Center Configuration Manager 2012 with the Software Update Point feature; however, in this environment patching has to be strictly manual, because server reboots need to be approved and scheduled by different people; thus, I need to use ConfigMgr's SUP like I would use a plain WSUS server with auto-approval but with manual installation. I created some Automatic Deployment Rules to automatically download and deploy critical updates, and to have an installation dealine of "as soon as possible"; but then, I've also configured those rules to not do anything when the deadline is reached, and to not perform system restarts even if needed (see image). Also, I've configured the device collection to where those rules deploy updates to not have any valid maintencance window. However, I'm experiencing quite the opposite as what I was expecting: as soon as the new updates are processed by the ADRs, they get automatically installed on all systems by the Software Center, and the computers are subsequently restarted. Why is this happening? Am I getting something wrong or is just ConfigMgr 2012 not behaving like it should?

Analytic functions – they’re not aggregates

SQL 2012 brings us a bunch of new analytic functions, together with enhancements to the OVER clause. People who have known me over the years will remember that I’m a big fan of the OVER clause and the types of things that it brings us when applied to aggregate functions, as well as the ranking functions that it enables. The OVER clause was introduced in SQL Server 2005, and remained frustratingly unchanged until SQL Server 2012. This post is going to look at a particular aspect of the analytic functions though (not the enhancements to the OVER clause). When I give presentations about the analytic functions around Australia as part of the tour of SQL Saturdays (starting in Brisbane this Thursday), and in Chicago next month, I’ll make sure it’s sufficiently well described. But for this post – I’m going to skip that and assume you get it. The analytic functions introduced in SQL 2012 seem to come in pairs – FIRST_VALUE and LAST_VALUE, LAG and LEAD, CUME_DIST and PERCENT_RANK, PERCENTILE_CONT and PERCENTILE_DISC. Perhaps frustratingly, they take slightly different forms as well. The ones I want to look at now are FIRST_VALUE and LAST_VALUE, and PERCENTILE_CONT and PERCENTILE_DISC. The reason I’m pulling this ones out is that they always produce the same result within their partitions (if you’re applying them to the whole partition). Consider the following query: SELECT YEAR(OrderDate), FIRST_VALUE(TotalDue) OVER (PARTITION BY YEAR(OrderDate) ORDER BY OrderDate, SalesOrderID RANGE BETWEEN UNBOUNDED PRECEDING AND UNBOUNDED FOLLOWING), LAST_VALUE(TotalDue) OVER (PARTITION BY YEAR(OrderDate) ORDER BY OrderDate, SalesOrderID RANGE BETWEEN UNBOUNDED PRECEDING AND UNBOUNDED FOLLOWING), PERCENTILE_CONT(0.95) WITHIN GROUP (ORDER BY TotalDue) OVER (PARTITION BY YEAR(OrderDate)), PERCENTILE_DISC(0.95) WITHIN GROUP (ORDER BY TotalDue) OVER (PARTITION BY YEAR(OrderDate)) FROM Sales.SalesOrderHeader ; This is designed to get the TotalDue for the first order of the year, the last order of the year, and also the 95% percentile, using both the continuous and discrete methods (‘discrete’ means it picks the closest one from the values available – ‘continuous’ means it will happily use something between, similar to what you would do for a traditional median of four values). I’m sure you can imagine the results – a different value for each field, but within each year, all the rows the same. Notice that I’m not grouping by the year. Nor am I filtering. This query gives us a result for every row in the SalesOrderHeader table – 31465 in this case (using the original AdventureWorks that dates back to the SQL 2005 days). The RANGE BETWEEN bit in FIRST_VALUE and LAST_VALUE is needed to make sure that we’re considering all the rows available. If we don’t specify that, it assumes we only mean “RANGE BETWEEN UNBOUNDED PRECEDING AND CURRENT ROW”, which means that LAST_VALUE ends up being the row we’re looking at. At this point you might think about other environments such as Access or Reporting Services, and remember aggregate functions like FIRST. We really should be able to do something like: SELECT YEAR(OrderDate), FIRST_VALUE(TotalDue) OVER (PARTITION BY YEAR(OrderDate) ORDER BY OrderDate, SalesOrderID RANGE BETWEEN UNBOUNDED PRECEDING AND UNBOUNDED FOLLOWING) FROM Sales.SalesOrderHeader GROUP BY YEAR(OrderDate) ; But you can’t. You get that age-old error: Msg 8120, Level 16, State 1, Line 5 Column 'Sales.SalesOrderHeader.OrderDate' is invalid in the select list because it is not contained in either an aggregate function or the GROUP BY clause. Msg 8120, Level 16, State 1, Line 5 Column 'Sales.SalesOrderHeader.SalesOrderID' is invalid in the select list because it is not contained in either an aggregate function or the GROUP BY clause. Hmm. You see, FIRST_VALUE isn’t an aggregate function. None of these analytic functions are. There are too many things involved for SQL to realise that the values produced might be identical within the group. Furthermore, you can’t even surround it in a MAX. Then you get a different error, telling you that you can’t use windowed functions in the context of an aggregate. And so we end up grouping by doing a DISTINCT. SELECT DISTINCT YEAR(OrderDate), FIRST_VALUE(TotalDue) OVER (PARTITION BY YEAR(OrderDate) ORDER BY OrderDate, SalesOrderID RANGE BETWEEN UNBOUNDED PRECEDING AND UNBOUNDED FOLLOWING), LAST_VALUE(TotalDue) OVER (PARTITION BY YEAR(OrderDate) ORDER BY OrderDate, SalesOrderID RANGE BETWEEN UNBOUNDED PRECEDING AND UNBOUNDED FOLLOWING), PERCENTILE_CONT(0.95) WITHIN GROUP (ORDER BY TotalDue) OVER (PARTITION BY YEAR(OrderDate)), PERCENTILE_DISC(0.95) WITHIN GROUP (ORDER BY TotalDue) OVER (PARTITION BY YEAR(OrderDate)) FROM Sales.SalesOrderHeader ; I’m sorry. It’s just the way it goes. Hopefully it’ll change the future, but for now, it’s what you’ll have to do. If we look in the execution plan, we see that it’s incredibly ugly, and actually works out the results of these analytic functions for all 31465 rows, finally performing the distinct operation to convert it into the four rows we get in the results. You might be able to achieve a better plan using things like TOP, or the kind of calculation that I used in http://sqlblog.com/blogs/rob_farley/archive/2011/08/23/t-sql-thoughts-about-the-95th-percentile.aspx (which is how PERCENTILE_CONT works), but it’s definitely convenient to use these functions, and in time, I’m sure we’ll see good improvements in the way that they are implemented. SQL Query Builder/Designer and code Formating

I write SQL query every now and then, I could easily write them freehand, but sometimes I do create SQL queries using SQL Query Designers for various reason. (I wont start to enumerate them here and/or argue about their usefulness, so let's just say they are sometime useful.) Anyway, I currently use 2 Query Designers : SQL server management studio's Query Designer. Visual Studio 2010's Query Builder (must often within the Table adapter Query Configuration Wizard.) There's something I hate about those two (I don't know about the others), it's the way they throw away my Code formatting of SQL queries after an edit. Is there any way to configure something to automatically reformat the SQL output or is there any external tool/plug-in that I could use to do that job?

It was suggested at this url --- http://make-it-open.blogspot.com/2008/12/sql-error-0-sqlstate-08s01.html --- to adjust the settings as follows: In hibernate.cfg.xml, write <property name="c3p0.min_size">5</property> <property name="c3p0.max_size">20</property> <property name="c3p0.timeout">1800</property> <property name="c3p0.max_statements">50</property> Then create "c3p0.properties" in your root classpath folder and write c3p0.testConnectionOnCheckout=true c3p0.acquireRetryDelay=1000 c3p0.acquireRetryAttempts=1 I've tried to make those adjustments following the direction of the Play! Framework documentation, where they say use "db.pool..." as follows: db.pool.timeout=1800 db.pool.maxSize=15 db.pool.minSize=5 db.pool.initialSize=5 db.pool.acquireRetryAttempts=1 db.pool.preferredTestQuery=SELECT 1 db.pool.testConnectionOnCheckout=true db.pool.acquireRetryDelay=1000 db.pool.maxStatements=50 Are those settings not going to work? Should I be trying to set them in a different way? With those settings I still get the error shown below, that is due to to long of a idle time. SQL Server Express performance issue

Hi folks ! I know my questions will sound silly and probably nobody will have perfect answer but since I am in a complete dead-end with the situation it will make me feel better to post it here. So... I have a SQL Server Express database that's 500 Mb. It contains 5 tables and maybe 30 stored procedure. This database is use to store articles and is use for the Developer It web site. Normally the web pages load quickly, let's say 2 ou 3 sec. BUT, sqlserver process uses 100% of the processor for those 2 or 3 sec. I try to find which stored procedure was the problem and I could not find one. It seems like every read into the table dans contains the articles (there are about 155,000 of them and 20 or so gets added every 15 minutes). I added few index but without luck... It is because the table is full text indexed ? Should I have order with the primary key instead of date ? I never had any problems with ordering by dates.... Should I use dynamic SQL ? Should I add the primary key into the url of the articles ? Should I use mutiple indexes for seperate columns or one big index ? I you want more details or code bits, just ask for it.
