• With dnsmasq as the DNS server, 'dig' succeeds, but 'nslookup' and 'ping' fail

  I installed dnsmasq on a machine of mine (It's a Kubuntu 12.04 LTS), backed only by /etc/hosts (no connection to the Internet until later). Now, when I'm on the same machine as the dnsmasq - or any other machine on the server, I can dig mymachine and get 192.168.0.1, but if I try to nslookup mymachine, I get: >> connection timed out; no servers could be reached Tried also nslookup mymachine.mynicedomain.org - didn't work either. pinging fails. How can I the DNS lookups to work? Is the problem with the nsswitch entries? The dnsmasq configuration? • MDX needs a function or macro syntax

  I was having an interesting discussion with a few people about the impact of named sets on performance (the same discussion noted by Chris Webb here: http://cwebbbi.wordpress.com/2011/03/16/referencing-named-sets-in-calculations). And apparently the core of the performance issue comes down to the way named sets are materialized within the SSAS engine. Which lead me to the thought that what we really need is a syntax for declaring a non-materialized set or to take this even further a way of declaring an MDX expression as function or macro so that it can be re-used in multiple places. Because sometimes you do want the set materialised, such as when you use an ordered set for calculating rankings. But a lot of the time we just want to make our MDX modular and want to avoid having to repeat the same code over and over. • How do I get a Laserjet M1212nf MFP working?

  I am trying to install a multifunctional printer Laserjet M1212nf MFP on Ubuntu 12.04. I downloaded and install the hplip indicated by the official web site. At the end of the installation I chose reboot the whole system and next I call hp-setup in the terminal (as normal user and then as root). After select in the dialog box my printer I got the following error: Searching... • Canonicals with differing content

  Interesting conundrum here with canonicals. Lets say I have a site with a "verified" system where other websites can become so and so "verified". Their url to send people to to confirm verification is something like "blah.com/verify/company1" and "blah.com/verify/company2". But logically "blah.com/verify" itself is not verifying anyone in particular, so it redirects to the signup form to get verified, at "blah.com/verify/register" As far as the actual companies registered, I figure it doesn't make sense to index every individual url with only the tiny difference of which company name it's saying yay or nay to being verified, so canonicals could come in handy on those pages to condense the indexing. Yet making "blah.com/verify" the canonical "hub" doesn't work well because it's a signup form, not a verification page, so technically has quite different content from the various verification pages themselves. But at the same time it's a bit unfair to choose 1 company to point all the canonical benefits too to use that as the "hub", yet a bit wasteful to have google index every individual verification page and spread out all that linkjuice. Basically, I'm just looking for advice, what's best for this from a search engine standpoint?

• Allow access to WordPress site only by links in email newsletters

  I send out a personal email newsletter, and have been looking into sending it via some service like MailChimp, or sendy.co. Many of these email services suggest, or require, the email newsletter content to be available online, in case the recipient's email app doesn't render it properly, or at all. The thing is I don't want my newsletter contents visible to the whole world. Nor do I want to require existing recipients to make accounts/be assigned accounts, with passwords. So, the question is: How can my WordPress site content be viewable only by clicking on the link to it in the email newsletter. It can't be found in a Google search; but once at the site the visitor can view previous newsletter contents. It seems an .htaccess file would do the trick, but I have been unable to figure out the syntax for this. Thanks for your help. I have copied below two other questions, and answers, which have helped me word my question clearly. Similar to this request about allowing access to a certain group while still restricting access to the world: Is there a way to password protect directory only in cpanel. But the user should not be prompted the password, when they try to access it via web? • Linking to lua libraries w/ codeblocks on linux

  After I downloaded the source for lua, I followed the install instructions, doing... make linux install make generic install I've also done the make test and it passes, printing out Hello World, from Lua 5.1. However, I can't link to the lua libraries in CodeBlocks. I know where lualib.a is (usr/local/lib) which I set in my Search Directories for the linker. I still get error messages like... undefined reference to lua_isstring Am I missing something critical here? P.S. I had this running on Windows via Visual Studio.

• Emacs/Vim/Vi - do they have a place in modern software development ecosystem? [closed]

  Watching all those screencasts (and listening all those podcasts) with more-or-less famous hackers/programmers I hear that many of those use emacs/vi(m) for their daily work. Now, I myself tried using both emacs and vim, and I honestly cannot understand why would anybody use these for any kind of serious development. The most advertised feature is something along the lines of "you'll be able to work with text (meaning cutting, pasting, duplicating, moving, etc) up to ten times faster than with conventional IDEs", but I don't buy that. When has the success of a software project been defined by how fast a programmer can juggle lines in a text editor or by saving a couple of keystrokes here and there? Plugins and extensions? I bet nothing comes close to R# or IDEA in terms of refactoring support ("Rename" refactoring implemented by means of "Search and Replace" is not a refactoring IMO); others are trivial. Ubiquitous and available everywhere? So what? How often do you find yourself editing files over a 300 baud connection on an esoteric *nix installation without a VCS? So here goes: do said editors have a justified place in a modern software development ecosystem?

  I have HD 4850 card, Ubuntu 12.10 and installed legacy drivers using makson96 ppa. The issue is, that FGLRX can not detect my device and loads vesa bios. I had the same problem on ubuntu 11.10, 12.04 versions. I want to manually help fglrx find a matching device to load as it shoudld do.   I've search most of the topic around here in @SuperUser and around most of the webs they can easily access Windows uing Mac OS X but I have a question can I access my Mac using Windows? I've activate my screen sharing on my Mac OS X and I can use another Macbook to access it no problem but once I use TightVNC or UltraVNC and any VNC base program non of them really worked for me. So is there any alternative to VNC to give me option to access my Mac using VNC or something like that? Thanks.

  I would like to change an entry for a solution to boot from CD from legacy grub (looks like title bla bla bla) to an entry to a format compatible to grub 2 (the one that looks like menuentry "bla bla bla" {. • Automatic Appointment Conflict Resolution

  I'm trying to figure out an algorithm for resolving appointment times. I currently have a naive algorithm that pushes down conflicting appointments repeatedly, until there are no more appointments. # The appointment list is always sorted on start time appointment_list = [ <Appointment: 10:00 -> 12:00>, <Appointment: 11:00 -> 12:30>, <Appointment: 13:00 -> 14:00>, <Appointment: 13:30 -> 14:30>, ] Constraints are that appointments: cannot be after 15:00 cannot be before 9:00 This is the naive algorithm for i, app in enumerate(appointment_list): for possible_conflict in appointment_list[i+1:]: if possible_conflict.start < app.end: difference = app.end - possible_conflict.start possible_conflict.end += difference possible_conflict.start += difference else: break This results in the following resolution, which obviously breaks those constraints, and the last appointment will have to be pushed to the following day. appointment_list = [ <Appointment: 10:00 -> 12:00>, <Appointment: 12:00 -> 13:30>, <Appointment: 13:30 -> 14:30>, <Appointment: 14:30 -> 15:30>, ] Obviously this is sub-optimal, It performs 3 appointment moves when the confict could have been resolved with one: if we were able to push the first appointment backwards, we could avoid moving all the subsequent appointments down. I'm thinking that there should be a sort of edit-distance approach that would calculate the least number of appointments that should be moved in order to resolve the scheduling conflict, but I can't get the a handle on the methodology. Should it be breadth-first or depth first solution search. When do I know if the solution is "good enough"?

• Looking for 2D Cross platform suggestions based on requirements specified

  I am an intermediate developer with minor experience on enterprise mobile applications for iphone, android and blackberry looking to build my first ever mobile game. I did a google search for some game dev forums and this popped up so I thought I would try posting here as I lack luck elsewhere. If you have ever heard of the game for the iphone and android platform entitled avatar fight then you will have an idea of the graphic capabilities I require. Basically the battles which are automated one sprite attacking another doing cool animations but all in 2d. My buddy and I have two motivations, one is to jump into mobile Dev as my experience is limited as is his so we would like some trending knowledge (html5 would be nice to learn) . The other is to make some money on the side, don't expect much but polishing the game and putting our all will hopefully reward us a bit. We have looked into corona engine, however a lot of people are saying it is limited in the graphics department, we are open to learning new languages like lua, c++, python etc. Others we have looked at include phonegap, rhomobile, unity, and the list goes on. I really have no idea what the pros and cons of these are but for a basic battle sequence and some mini games we want to chose the right one. Some more things that we will be doing include things like card games, side scrolling flying object based games, maybe fishing stuff. We want to start small with these minigames and work our way up to the idea we would like to implement in the future. We only want to work in 2D. So with these requirements please help me chose a platform to work on (cross platform is what we are ideally leaning towards). Please feel free to throw in some pieces of advice you may have for newbie game developers like myself too. Thank you for reading!

  Is there a way to run Apache2 or Nginx with PHP on the iPhone? Im surprised so little info is available on this topic, as it seems quite interesting to host websites on an iPhone. Consider slow 3G connections or no 3G at all, and you want to demonstrate some webapplication you wrote... hosting them on the iphone would be an awsome way to fix the speed issues with the mobile network speeds. For the Ipad there are several addoptions available, nothing much usable on iphone / nginx apache2 search terms anywhere :( I want to host some websites on my iphone for demonstration purposes. So when im "out the office" Ill be able to very fast browse some websites that I host on the Iphone. there is no decent information out there, does anyone have a lead on how to do this? My question is specific to if nginx or apache2 can be run on the iphone, it would be nice if PHP would run on it too

  Ubuntu's clock is off by about a half hour: Where do I even start troubleshooting this? It's allegedly being set "automatically from the Internet". How can I verify that "the Internet" knows what time it is?   I'm a novice at spreadsheets, so I hope you'll forgive me if I'm asking a super obvious question. Is it possible to use tags in Excel/Google Spreadsheet? I'm creating a spreadsheet to log all the articles and books I'm reading. Say I'm reading "I, Claudius". I want to give it these tags: history, fiction, biography, disability, politics, drama. Then, if I want to display all the articles/books tagged with "politics", I can maybe search/display/pivot with that tag. Maybe preferably, the tags should all be in one cell with each word separated by a comma. If each word were in a cell of its own, it would make the table really messy, I think. I am open to other labelling solutions too. Thanks!

• How to get the Three.js import/export scripts into Blender on Ubuntu?

  I have been working with 3D primitives in Three.js, but now I want to import some models. I plan on using Blender, which I have just downloaded with: sudo apt-get install blender However, I was instructed to put the import/export scripts in the .blender/2.62/scripts/addons folder, but it does not exist! .blender/2.62 does exist, but it only has a config folder. The next thing I did is manually changed the script search path in Blender's preferences from // to my homefolder/scripts, which contained the required io_mesh_threejs folder (which, in turn had the .py scripts inside). I saved the changes, restarted Blender, but still nothing: in the menu there is no mention of Three.js at all! What do I do? It would be great if I knew the installation path for Blender, because maybe I could put those scripts there manually. Where should it be installed? By the instructions here Libtool library used but `LIBTOOL' is undefined The usual way to define `LIBTOOL' is to add `AC_PROG_LIBTOOL' to `configure.in' and run `aclocal' and `autoconf' again. If `AC_PROG_LIBTOOL' is in `configure.in', make sure its definition is in aclocal's search path Libtool installed from source.   Last week's article, Displaying a Grid of Data in ASP.NET MVC, showed, step-by-step, how to display a grid of data in an ASP.NET MVC application. Last week's article started with creating a new ASP.NET MVC application in Visual Studio, then added the Northwind database to the project and showed how to use Microsoft's Linq-to-SQL tool to access data from the database. The article then looked at creating a Controller and View for displaying a list of product information (the Model). This article builds on the demo application created in Displaying a Grid of Data in ASP.NET MVC, enhancing the grid to include bi-directional sorting. If you come from an ASP.NET WebForms background, you know that the GridView control makes implementing sorting as easy as ticking a checkbox. Unfortunately, implementing sorting in ASP.NET MVC involves a bit more work than simply checking a checkbox, but the quantity of work isn't significantly greater and with ASP.NET MVC we have more control over the grid and sorting interface's layout and markup, as well as the mechanism through which sorting is implemented. With the GridView control, sorting is handled through form postbacks with the sorting parameters - what column to sort by and whether to sort in ascending or descending order - being submitted as hidden form fields. In this article we'll use querystring parameters to indicate the sorting parameters, which means a particular sort order can be indexed by search engines, bookmarked, emailed to a colleague, and so on - things that are not possible with the GridView's built-in sorting capabilities. • How do you set up the directory structure for a multilingual site without duplicating content?

  I want to make a website in two languages. I've looked around and settled on the directory option of separating both languages. How do I make it work? Let's say I have the following three files for the landing homepage, the English page and the Spanish page: http://www.domain.com/index.html http://www.domain.com/en/index.html http://www.domain.com/es/index.html Let's also say that /index.html will be in English, with a link to /es/index.html. In turn, /es/index.html will have a link to the English version. Would this be back to /index.html or to /en/index.html. How do I get both English versions (the one at the root and the one in the directory) to actually be the same file in the same directory? I'm new to this, so I'm not using any scripts yet. To me, the obvious solution is to duplicate both English versions and have the one at the root point to files under the /en/ directory, but I'm not a fan of duplication and I've learned that search engines really frown upon that. Anyone point me in the right direction?

• How can we control the device driver load order in Windows XP ?

  We are trying to install both an HP scanner and a Kodak scanner on an XP machine and the problem is that that HP's scanner driver always places itself into the first and default scanner device position. We are using an automation software on that machine which must use the Kodak scanner as the default scanner. The HP flatbed isn't needed to be the default scanner on that machine. It will always be used manually and through its own software. Our developers did some research 2 years ago couldn't find a solution. Nowadays we are preparing to expand our user base and this problem did surface again on machines with the same configuration. I did a more aggresive search pn the net and found some tips like this one : http://support.microsoft.com/kb/115486 I couldn't realize how to suit this solution to my scenario. Could someone please point me to the right direction ?

  I have a AD-LDS instance running on a Server 2008 R2. I have this application partition, created at installation : dc=enterprise,dc=example,dc=com I have succesfully followed this procedure to create application partitions. They are named : cn=stuff,dc=enterprise,dc=example,dc=com cn=things,dc=enterprise,dc=example,dc=com If I configure my client(s) to follow referals, I can search from dc=enterprise,dc=example,dc=com and find objects under cn=stuff and cn=things. How can I create (or move after the fact) the stuff and things partitions so they are logically located under a OU under the initial partition, ending up with something like : cn=stuff,ou=applications,dc=enterprise,dc=example,dc=com cn=things,ou=applications,dc=enterprise,dc=example,dc=com
